foreword — woord vooraf

In 2003 the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne acquired a late Gothic painted panel representing Saint Louis of Toulouse. The following year Roland Krischel devoted an extensive study to both the Neuerwerbung and the ensemble to which this wieder aufgefundenes Retabelfragment originally belonged. The newly acquired painting was, after all, das einzige derzeit lokalisierbare Fragment from the exterior wings of the Great Passion altarpiece that the master of Saint Lawrence had painted around 1425-1430 in Cologne for a church of one of the Franciscan monasteries in Cologne or -more probably- for the High Altar of the church of the Clarissen monastery there.
It is therefore with some pride that by means of this catalogue I am able to introduce to you two other panels which belonged to the left exterior wing of that same ensemble. The rediscovery of these Saint John the Baptist and The Virgin and Child paintings, which have not been seen by the public after the auction of the Johann Jacob Merlo Collection in 1891 and which have since then remained the property of the family that acquired them, represents a find that is both spectacular and exceptional; privately owned early 15th century German paintings of excellent quality are, after all, an absolute rarity, but besides being well documented and belonging to a large and highly important ensemble, this pair can, moreover, be attributed to an outstanding artist. The fact that this master of Saint Lawrence can possibly be identified with the master of Saint Veronica, the leading Cologne painter during the first decades of the 15th century -a theory which has been recently argued- only goes to increase the significance and the value of this rediscovery.
I am now pleased to present to you these two paintings and hope that reading this catalogue will convey to you the same feeling of fascination that I experienced not only when I discovered but also while I was researching the two panels.

catalogue 12 08-09
The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne possesses twelve
painted fragments, all of which originally belonged to
the same monumental Passion altarpiece executed by the so-
called Meister von St. Laurenz in Cologne approximately 1425-
1430. The same museum used to house two other paintings
from the same ensemble, but both of these were destroyed in an
air raid in 1943.
The interior wings of this Grossen Passionsaltar originally
portrayed 12 scenes from The Passion of Christ, eleven of which
are now in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum. Divided into two
registers, we can identify on the left wing: The Agony in the Garden
(or Gethsemane), Christ before Pilate, The Flagellation, The Crowning
with Thorns, The Road to Calvary and The Crucifixion (ills.4a-4f)1
and on the right wing: The Resurrection, Jesus the Gardener (or Noli
me Tangere), The Ascension, The Descent from the Cross and Christ in
Limbo, respectively (ills.5a-5d and 5f)2. The twelfth fragment
depicting The Entombment (ill.5e) went missing during the
World War II 3.
The exterior wings are similarly characterized by the same
division into two registers. Two scenes were painted here, one
above the other, each depicting various figures in proximity.
The top of the right-hand wing shows a panel depicting Four
Saints, about which little is known4, while the bottom register
represents Saint Catherine, Saint Agnes, Saint Barbara, Saint
Christina, a Donor and Two Nuns5. The left wing, which was its
pendant, had a very analogous decoration: the bottom panel,
which also belonged to the collections of the Wallraf-Richartz-
Museum until 1943, represented Saint Stephen, Saint Lawrence,
Saint Egidius, Saint Eligius and Three Clerical Donors (ill.3e)6, while
the top was similarly decorated with Four Saints (ills.3a-3d). It
is known that the latter scene -also originally rectangular in
form- was sawed into 4 parts somewhere between 1846 and
18907, whereby the left-hand fragment, depicting Saint Louis
of Toulouse (ill.6) was later purchased in 2003 by the Wallraf-
Richartz-Museum8. While Alexander Schnütgen (+ 1918) was
the owner of the second painting portraying Saint Francis of Assisi
(ill.7) (together with the Saint Louis fragment) from 1891 before
it belonged to the Schnütgen Museum in Cologne until after
19239, the two right-hand scenes (Saint John the Baptist and The
Virgin and Child) (ills.8 and 9) have not been seen in public since
the auction of the Merlo Collection in 1891.
Nothing is known to us about the representation that was
depicted on the central part of this Passion altarpiece; it is even
impossible to say whether there was a painted scene, a relief or
perhaps a large sculpture.
The first painting presented here depicts Saint John the Baptist
(ill.1)10. He is depicted full-length, showing him against a red
background adorned with numerous gold rosettes. A small
green landscape is shown below the low horizon line, composed
of grass, leaves and green stylized floral elements.
Saint John the Baptist, portrayed with long hair and a beard,
is wearing an almost full-length cloak of grey camel hair. He
is barefoot. With his right hand he is pointing to the Lamb of
God (ill.10) which is held by his left hand. A large, golden halo
is visible behind his head, the outline of which was traced in
relief by using a pre-formed relief pattern in the soft, still wet
priming layer (ill.13).
A narrow gold boundary line has been painted at its base, with
at its centre right the remains of a decorative pattern of gold
trailing foliage (ill.16). This striking detail together with the
black edge at the bottom, indicates that the painting has been
cut off at its base. The top edge, however, is original and has not
been sawn; here, the original priming layer, c.1 cm wide, is still
completely intact.
The reverse (ill.19), which is cradled, reveals that the Saint John
was painted on three vertical glued oak panels which have been
fixed together by means of long but very narrow inserts.
The second painting, which has virtually the same dimensions,
portrays The Virgin and Child (ill.2)11. She, too, has been portrayed
full length; she, too, is standing on a lawn of green grass, richly
strewn with leaves and stylized floral elements; and she, too, is
portrayed in front of a red background adorned with golden
rosettes.
The Madonna is attired in a light blue cape on top of a long red
gown with a floor-length hemline. On her head a golden crown
with a decoration of large and small lilies, behind which a large,
golden halo is visible, whose outline has been traced in relief by
using a pre-formed relief pattern in the soft, still wet priming
layer (ill.14). Her right hand is holding the right foot of Christ,
which is resting on her left arm (ill.11). He is completely naked
except for a loincloth covering resembling a veil. He, too, is
portrayed with a halo in relief (ill.15).
Once again, below the landscape reminiscent of the mille fleur
style, a narrow gold boundary line is visible above a thin black
edge, with, once again -but this time centre left- the remains of
a decorative pattern of gold trailing foliage (ill.17). The black
border and in particular the trailing foliage detail demonstrates
the fact that this painting was also sawn off at the bottom.
However, the upper border and right-hand side are both original
and have not been cut off as evidenced by the original, c.1 cm
thick priming layer, which is also here still completely intact12.
The reverse (ill.18) likewise cradled, reveals that this fragment
was painted on three vertical glued oak panels, which have been
joined by means of long, but very narrow inserts.
In het Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Keulen bevinden zich
twaalf geschilderde fragmenten die alle oorspronkelijk deel
uitmaakten van eenzelfde monumentaal Passie-retabel dat de
zgn. Meister von St. Laurenz omstreeks 1425-1430 in Keulen heeft
vervaardigd.
Museum bevinden. Verdeeld over twee registers herkennen
Drie Geestelijke Schenkers (afb.3e)6, terwijl bovenaan eveneens
Vier Heiligen prijkten (afbn.3a-3d).
Richartz-Museum is aangekocht8.
of beeldhouwwerk was opgesteld.

catalogue 12 12-13
It is absolutely indisputable that the present Saint John the
Baptist and Virgin and Child paintings (ills.1 and 2) are indeed
identifiable with the two missing fragments at the right-hand
side of the top register of the left exterior wing of the Great
Passion altarpiece by the master of Saint Lawrence (ills.3c-d).
First and foremost, there are the undeniable material
similarities: both paintings are, just like the Saint Louis of
Toulouse (ill.6) painted on vertical glued oak panels, and all
three also have very similar dimensions. However, what is more
important is the fact that the technical structure of the panels,
such as thickness, width and composition, closely corresponds
to the Saint Louis fragment and that the glued construction as
well as the long, but very narrow inserts are identical13. The fact
that the boards are unusually thin14 -they were, after all, sawn
in half15- further confirms their relationship. We can predict
that analysis of the panels upon which the Madonna (ills.3d
and 18) is painted will confirm that these match the (original)
panels of the Gethsemane fragment on the interior (which were,
however, removed during a recent restoration) (ill.4a)16. Both
scenes are (were) painted to the front and back of the very same
oak support (which was sawed in half in the 19th century). The
same also holds true for the Saint John figure (ill.3c and 19), the
support of which on the interior corresponds to the right-hand
side of the Gethsemane and with left-hand half of the Christ before
Pilate painting (ills.4a-b).
Another very convincing argument is the presence, at the
bottom of both fragments, of a gold boundary line on top of a
narrow black edge on the one hand and of traces of a decorative
6. 7.
gezaagd).
8. 9.
catalogue 12 14-15
pattern with gold trailing foliage, on the other (ills.16-17). The
very bottom of the Saint Louis fragment also displays traces of
an identical decoration scheme. These remains indicate that
between both registers of the exterior wings, there originally
had been a painted frieze17, which was decorated with a
repeating pattern of several (four or most probably five) gold
trailing foliage, but that the lower part was lost through the
sawing process18.
Again the very specific technique utilized for the realization of the
haloes of Saint John, Mary and Christ (ills.13 -15) on the one hand,
and of Louis of Toulouse (ill.12) on the other, is absolutely identical.
As Linda Schäfer points out: the haloes were not modelled
separately before being applied to the support, but that they were,
as was often the case with Cologne paintings from the 15th century,
gezogen19. A tiny perforation is visible in the middle of the halo of
both Saint John and Madonna figures, the same as is found in the Louis
painting, which indicates that the outline of the various haloes was
traced in the priming layer by means of a string attached to a small
nail and which could be turned round on its axis, like a primitive
pair of compasses, thus making a perfect circle20.
In addition, account must, of course, be taken of the style of
both paintings, which corresponds perfectly to the style of the
master of Saint Lawrence in general, and with his Saint Louis
fragment in particular. What is more, the above is further
confirmed by the extraordinary quality of the paintings
presented here: it suffices here to refer to several superb
details, such as the adorable lamb (ill.10) or the characteristic
and very refined faces (ills.13 and 14). Also, we cannot fail to
mention the magnificent Christ child (ill.11) whereby its most
remarkable feature is the subtlety with which the loincloth is
depicted, draped as a veil covering.
There is also very convincing evidence relating to the
compositional relationship between the four top fragments of
the exterior left wing -luckily, a photograph of the Saint Francis
fragment has been preserved- (ills.6-9 and 3a-d): which prove
that the size of the figures, the (low) position of the horizon
line, the treatment of the mille fleur landscapes, the way the red
background is decorated with numerous golden rosettes, are all
identical on all four fragments.
The condition of the two paintings is another factor which
proves that they must both have belonged to the Great Passion
altarpiece. It was, after all, inevitable for both paintings -the
Madonna in particular- to have to undergo the necessary cleaning,
conservation and restoration, where needed21. In particular, the
red background with the gilded rosettes was overpainted in
10.
verzagen grotendeels verloren is gegaan18.
cirkels rond zijn as gedraaid kon worden20.
11.
catalogue 12 16-17
several places and also several small bare patches were in need of
repair. The same imperfections are also characteristic of the Saint
Louis fragment22 and according to the descriptions in the auction
catalogue of the Schmitz Collection, it is likely that the same
holds true for all the other panels belonging to this ensemble 23.
The most convincing piece of evidence is, however, an extant
antique print depicting The Virgin and Child fragment, a
lithograph of that very painting (ill.21), executed in 1851 by Peter
Deckers, which adorns the cover of Die Meister der altkölnischen
Malerschule, published by Johann Jacob Merlo in 185224. Merlo
had only very recently acquired the fragment, having purchased
it at the auction of the Schmitz Collection in 1846. At that time it
was still part of the panel depicting Four Saints, which had not yet
been sawn into parts25. In view of the fact that even the smallest
details of our Virgin and Child painting (ill.20) are identical to those
found on the lithograph -for instance, the Madonna’s crown, her
robe and the landscape- we can safely assume that the present
fragment and the Merlo Madonna are one and the same.
The rediscovery of the Saint John and The Virgin and Child
paintings confirms that these two fragments were indeed
originally part of the Great Passion altarpiece by the master of
Saint Lawrence. Not only that, we are now able to form an even
more accurate idea of the original pictorial representation of
the exterior wings of this monumental altar.
It is now possible to confirm the reconstruction by Roland
Krischel26, on technical grounds, which situates the Saint John and
The Virgin and Child fragments on the right-hand side of the upper
register of the altarpiece’s left exterior wing. The confirmation
of the fact that the Madonna painting has preserved its original
priming layer both at the top and on the right-hand side (and
was, therefore, only sawn off at the bottom and on the left-hand
side) proves that this fragment was situated at the top right-
hand corner of the exterior wing. Seeing that the thickness of the
left-hand side of the Madonna panel, which varies from 1,05 cm
(at the bottom) to 0,4 cm (at the top)27- is (virtually) identical to
the thickness of the panel at the right-hand side of the Saint John
fragment (whose only unsawn edge is at the top), we can conclude
that, when viewed, Saint John must originally have been situated
to the left of the Virgin (thus on her right). The sawing off probably
caused the loss of a strip measuring between 3 to 4 cm. That can
be deducted from the set distance between the gold rosettes in
the background and the conspicuously narrower dimensions
of the Madonna painting. The absence of that narrow vertical
strip also explains why the plants and floral elements on the one
painting fail to continue onto the next, which was undoubtedly
the case originally.
In view of the fact that not one but three fragments are now
known to us, each of which not only have at the bottom a
gold boundary line above a narrow black edge but also show
the remains of a decorative pattern with gold trailing foliage
(ills.16-17), we are now able to form a more concrete image of the
decorative frieze which originally separated the two registers.
Based on the estimated diameter of the gold foliage, the frieze
must have been at least 5 cm high and because the foliage motif
was without doubt repeated at regular intervals, it is highly
12. 13.
welke Johann Jacob Merlo in 1852 publiceert24. Merlo was toen,
is gebleven), moet Johannes oorspronkelijk links naast Maria

likely that originally, the very same pattern gold foliage was
repeated five times -one underneath each one of the four saints
and one in the middle of the frieze. That could signify that a
painted strip measuring at least 3 to 4 cm was lost here, as well.
The presence of this Virgin and Child fragment in the Merlo
Collection raises the question of the exact provenance of the
painting and its pendant.
The original location of the Grossen Passionsaltar by the master
of Saint Lawrence is not known with certainty. However, taking
account of several iconographical peculiarities, it is believed that
this altarpiece, impressive both in size and in monumentality,
either once stood in the church of one of the Franciscan
monasteries in Cologne, or -more probably- was located on the
High Altar of the church of the Clarissen monastery there28.
Following the secularisation of society at the beginning of the
19th century and the dismantling of many churches (and the sale
of their interior decoration), the two painted wings belonging to
this altarpiece first re-appeared in the collection of the Cologne
bookseller, Johann Georg Schmitz (1763-1845)29, who in those days
ranked among the most important collectioneurs and connaisseurs
of medieval art in Cologne30. Following his decease, his collection
of paintings was auctioned in Cologne at Heberle’s (on 20 and 21
September 1846), which led to the dispersal of the six sawn off
fragments. The two inner wings with the Passion scenes (lot 5 ;
ills.4 and 5) as well as the bottom register of the exterior left wing
(lot 13 ; ill.3e) joined the collection of the Städtisches Museum in
Cologne (the so-called Wallrafianum; later the Wallraf-Richartz-
Museum) through Johann Anton Ramboux; the two registers
of the exterior right wing (lots 11 and 12) were purchased by
Adolf Kolping from Elberfeld, since when their whereabouts are
unknown. Finally, Johann Jacob Merlo (1810-1890) acquired lot 14
(ills.3a-3d and 6-9), being a “Unbekannter Meister der altkölnischen
It is Merlo who had this
rectangular scene sawn into four vertical parts and who in 1851
had a lithograph (ill.21) made of his Madonna painting (that may
already have been a separate fragment at the time). The Saint John
the Baptist and the Virgin and Child panels (ills.8 and 9) remained in
Merlo’s possession until his death and were then published in the
auction catalogue accompanying his collection in 189132. I do not
know whether Louis Beissel from Aachen bought both fragments
himself at the Merlo auction, or whether he acquired them from
an intermediary (private collector or dealer); but the fact is that
Louis Beissel owned both of these until his death in 1914, after
which they descended in the collection of his daughter, Anna
Beissel (1875-1919), and her husband, Theodor Schwartz (1870-
1946) from Bocholt. Whatever the case, it is certain that in 1930
both paintings were in the Schwartz Collection, evidenced by the
fact that the zwei Altarflügel were recorded and illustrated in a 1931
publication on the Bau- und Kunstdenkmaler von Westfalen. Stadt
Bocholt (as “Aufnahmen von 1930”)33. Both remained in Schwartz’s
possession until his decease in 1946 after which they passed by
descent to an heir in Westphalia (Germany, 1946-2013).
The master of Saint Lawrence (active: c.1415-1430) who created
this impressive Passion altarpiece in Cologne around 1425-
1430, is probably unknown to the majority of art enthusiasts.
Notwithstanding, the Laurenzmeister is an absolute key figure in
the history of Cologne painting in the 15th century, which -as is
well-known- was dominated by the work of the so-called Meister
der Hl. Veronika (active: c.1395-1415 or 1425 (?)) on the one hand,

middeleeuwse kunst in Keulen behoort30. Na zijn dood wordt
zijn schilderijencollectie bij Heberle in Keulen geveild (20
en 21 september 1846), waarna de zes verzaagde onderdelen
verspreid raken.
buitenluik (lot 13 ; afb.3e) komen, via Johann Anton Ramboux,
ontbreekt, sindsdien, elk spoor. Johann Jacob Merlo (1810-1890)

afzonderlijk fragment was).
In elk geval bevinden beide schilderijen
catalogue 12 20-21
and by the work of Stefan Lochner (c.1400-1451) on the other. The
master of Saint Lawrence is, after all, considered to be the Mittler
zwischen den beiden Hauptvertretern spätmittelalterlicher Kölner Malerei [a
transitional figure between the two leading representatives of late medieval
Cologne painting]34. He is thought to have trained and worked in the
workshop of the Veronica master and is sometimes even regarded
als dessen einziger noch nachweisbarer Schüler [as his only designated
successor]35. Not only that, there is a belief that er vielleicht sogar dessen
Werkstatt-Nachfolger war [maybe, he even took over the Veronica master’s
workshop]36 Moreover, recent studies have shown that both painters
collaborated as equals on certain commissions37. Following on
from this there was even the suggestion that “Veronikameister und
Laurenzmeister identisch also seien” [the Veronica master and the Lawrence
master could be one and the same artist], an opinion which appears to be
confirmed by technological research38.
The conventional name, Meister von St. Laurenz, derives from a
series of four scenes in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, which
together form the interior right wing of a missing altarpiece
probably originally in the Cologne Pfarrkirche St. Laurenz39. In 1910,
based on this magnificent ensemble, -es gehört zu den besten Kölner
Arbeiten des Weichen Stils um 1420 [it ranks among the best of Cologne
works of art in the International Style of c.1420]40- Eduard Firmenich-

Veronika (actief: ca.1395-1415 of 1425 (?))
beschouwt men hem zelfs als dessen einziger noch nachweisbarer
Schüler35.

Richartz reconstructed an oeuvre of stylistically coherent but
anonymous paintings all of which were created somewhere
between 1415-1430 in Cologne which he united under the name
of the Meister von St. Laurenz41.
erforscht sein [there has been little research into his artistic personality
and his oeuvre]42 and while there is not always agreement
among researchers, there is, however, a broader consensus
on the attribution of a number of works, which includes not
only small-scale Andachtsbilder but monumental paintings and
extensive altarpieces, as well. In addition to the four panels
from the Saint Lawrence Church in Cologne mentioned above
and an Entombment of Saint Lawrence in Nurnberg that probably
belonged to the same ensemble43, the Laurenzmeister is probably
also the creator of a Madonna and Child with Four Angel Musicians
in Frankfort44 and a Virgin in the Garden of Paradise in Cologne45,
both of which stylistically bear a close correspondence to this
ensemble. There are two other works in the Wallraf-Richartz-
Museum, which are usually attributed to the Laurenzmeister: a
double-sided panel painting (representing The Holy Trinity and
The Vera Icon)46 and a second, much larger Vera Icon47. The most
important and most extensive work of the master of Saint
Lawrence is the Great Passion altarpiece, to which the present
Saint John and Virgin and Child fragments belong. Also, there is
a fairly general consensus among the majority of latter-day
scholars on the dating of approximately 1425-1430 -therefore
one of his later works (and an exact comtemporain of The Ghent
Altarpiece (1426-1432) by the van Eyck brothers).
The rediscovery of these Saint John and Madonna paintings on
the one hand and the identification of both panels with the
two missing fragments belonging to the top register of the left-
hand exterior wing of the Great Passion altarpiece executed by
the master of Saint Lawrence (c.1425-1430) on the other hand is a
major new contribution to the knowledge of Cologne painting
of the Weiche Stil in general and to the study of the oeuvre of this
still anonymous, but outstanding Cologne master, in particular.
The extraordinary quality, the extreme rarity, and the art-
historical importance of the two fragments is best evidenced by
the fact that from his very considerable collection of late-Gothic
paintings from Cologne, it was exactly this Virgin and Child that
Johann Jacob Merlo selected to adorn the cover of the study he
published in 1852 on Die Meister der altkölnischen Malerschule.

8 Master of Saint Lawrence (to be identified with the master of Saint Veronica ? (cf. infra, note 38)) ; Cologne, c.1425-1430 ; tempera on oak panel (cradled): 90,7

9 Master of Saint Lawrence (to be identified with the master of Saint Veronica ? (cf. infra, note 38)) ; Cologne, c.1425-1430 ; tempera on oak panel: c.90 X c.43 cm ; Present location unknown ; Formerly: Cologne, Schnütgen-Museum ; Prov.: J.G. 10 Master of Saint Lawrence (to be identified with the master of Saint Veronica ? (cf. infra, note 38)) ; Cologne, c.1425-1430 ; tempera on oak panel (cradled): 91,5-91,8 X 40,7-41,7 cm. There is a far greater variation, however, in the thickness of the panels: from 0,4 cm at the top right to 1,1 cm at the bottom right. For all technical details I am greatly indebted to Maike Behrends (Frankfort).
11 Master of Saint Lawrence (to be identified with the master of Saint Veronica ? (cf. infra, note 38)) ; Cologne, c.1425-1430 ; tempera on oak panel (cradled): 91,8-92 X 39-39,3 cm. Here too the thickness of the panels greatly varies: from 0,4 cm on the upper left to 1,05 cm bottom left.
12 Also the original priming layer is still preserved on the (unsawn) upper edge of the Louis panel and i.d. on the (unsawn) left-hand side ; Krischel, 2004, p.25.
13 Schäfer, 2004, pp.6-7, p.57, ill.78 and p.37, ill.22.
14 The Saint Louis painting is a mere 0,5 cm thick (Schäfer, 2004, p.9) ; the thickness of the Saint John fragment varies from 0,4 (top right) to 1,1 cm (bottom right), while that of the Madonna varies from 0,4 (top left) to 1,05 cm (bottom left).
15 The wings were first sawed in half shortly before or shortly after they were acquired by Schmitz. At any rate, by 1841, the inner wings had been separated from the outer ones. Moreover, at that time, the two upper registers belonging to the exterior wings were also separated from the two bottom registers. That explains why at the auction of the Schmitz Collection in 1846, the side wings were sold as 5 different lots, namely Lot 5 (the twelve Passion scenes from the inner wings) and Lots 11 to 14 inclusive (the two sawn registers belonging to the two exterior wings). The (rectangular) panel of the top register of the left exterior wing was further cut into 4 vertical fragments when it belonged to Merlo (1846-1890). - To our ears sawing the double-sided painted panels in half sounds almost barbaric nowadays, but we shouldn’t forget that the wings of The Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers were likewise sawn in half in the 19th century in practically the same manner.
16 It must be pointed out that the original oak supports of the 11 still extant Passion scenes on the interior wings were replaced by so-called Tischlerplatten during their restoration by Wolfgang Hahn (1964-1970) (Schäfer, 2004, p.4). However, there is “sorgfältiger fotografischer Dokumentation der Tafelrückseiten” which enables us to compare the backs of the (Saint Louis,) Saint John and Mary fragments on the one hand, and the original backs of the three Passion scenes represented on the top register of the left interior wing, on the other (i.e. The Flagellation, Christ before Pilate and The Agony in the Garden) ; See: Krischel, 2004, pp.21 and 24-25.
17 Rests of a similar frieze decorated with gold trailing foliage, are found on the panels of the interior wings as well.
18 Krischel, 2004, p.25. - A more or less comparable decorative frieze situated between the two registers of the exterior wings is found on the so-called Klarenaltar in Cologne Cathedral (Cologne, c.1360), to which the Great Passion altarpiece by the master of Saint Lawrence is indebted -formally, compositionally, and iconographically. Besides, it is worth remembering that likewise, the saint

situated top left of the right exterior wing of the Klarenaltar depicts Saint John the Baptist and since “der Laurenzmeister mit der umfassender Überarbeitung des Klarenaltars Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts in Zusammenhang gebracht wird, erscheint ein bewusster Rückgriff seitens des Künstlers denkbar” (Krischel, 2004, p.25) ; See also: Chr. Bellot, Klarissenkloster St. Klara, in: Colonia Romanica …, 10, 1995, pp.211-221 and Chr. Schulze-Senger and W. Hansmann, Der Clarenaltar im Kölner Dom…, Worms, 2005.

21 A special word of thanks to Maike Behrends (Frankfort) who painstakingly examined, cleaned and conserved both paintings.
22 Schäfer, 2004, passim ; My thanks go to Linda Schäfer and Iris Schaefer who allowed access to their Untersuchungs- und Restaurierungsbericht regarding the Louis painting which they restored in 2003-2004 (see also: Krischel, 2004, pp.27-28).
23 The fact that only two of the Four Saints are mentioned by name in the description of Lot 12 (cf. supra, note 4) leads us to suspect that this panel was in such poor condition that it was no longer possible to identify the two other saints.
24 Merlo, 1852. - The caption reads: “Gemalt v. Wilhelm von Herle um 1370. Gedr. v. A. Wallraf. In Stein grav. v. P. Deckers, Cöln, 1851. Das Original auf Holz … in der Sammlung des Hn. J.J. Merlo in Cöln.”. An original and well-preserved example of this very rare publication from 1852 accompanies these two paintings.
25 As this print dates from 1851, we can assume that Merlo had the rectangular panel sawn into four vertical fragments shortly after purchase (1846).

35 Krischel, 2004, p.18.
36 Zehnder, 1990, p.491 - In view of the fact that the master of Saint Veronica was active over a longer period than previously thought (till c.1425 instead of c.1415) on the one hand, and that both masters also appear to have collaborated “as equal partners” (cf. infra, note 37) on the other, this raises the question of whether it is correct to assume that “der “Meister von St. Laurenz” als der Nachfolder des “Meister der hl. Veronika” zu betrachten (ist)” [that the master of Saint Lawrence was the successor to the Veronica master], or whether they should be regarded as “zwei ausgebildete Maler (die) über einen längeren Zeitraum bis mindestens in die 1420er Jahre parallel zu einander tätig gewesen sein dürften” [two fully-fledged masters who were both active independently from each other during a longer period, lasting at least into the 1420s] (see: I. Schaefer and K. von Baum, in: Sprache des Materials …, 2013, pp.187-188).
37 That applies for instance to a Triptych with the Virgin and Child, Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara (Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, inv. no. 10), a later work by the Veronica master, for which the Lawrence master most probably painted both wings (Lit.: Zehnder, 1990, pp.316-323, ills.206-207 and R. Krischel, in: Sprache des Materials …, 2013, no.9, pp.238-241).
38 Kemperdick, 2012, p.121 and R. Krischel, in: Sprache des Materials …, 2013, p.226. It goes without saying that we cannot explore this further here, but it certainly corroborates the enormous art-historical importance of the two paintings presented here.

18 Krischel, 2004, p.25.

24 Merlo, 1852. - Het bijschrift luidt: “Gemalt v. Wilhelm von Herle um 1370. Gedr. v. A. Wallraf. In Stein grav. v. P. Deckers, Cöln, 1851. Das Original auf Holz … in der Sammlung des Hn. J.J. Merlo in Cöln.”.
