Get all blue for the Easter season

Just two days before Easter a new type of party drink

went on sale in the biggest supermarkets in the

country. It is not surprising that the drink is sweet and

fizzy, but it has one unusual feature: the colour. It is

blue. The drink is a special limited edition for the

spring season, made from blueberries which grow in

Sweden. One bottle of this new speciality costs £2.05.

Travelling from Venus to Mars? Not yet!

Cosmo Galieri from Italy, whom the police arrested yesterday, made

a fortune recently. His agency, the Interplanetary Voyage Bureau, was

selling tickets for journeys from Earth to other planets. One special

offer even included a trip in a luxury spaceship from Venus to Mars.

Mr Galieri, 51, sold interplanetary dreams to many famous people,

including an American ex-president. Each journey cost about 1.5

million dollars.

Exercise 2. (Topic: Travelling and Tourism)

Drivers who want to use the H7 motorway today must changetheir plans. The tunnel under the motorway is not open todaybecause of an accident which happened yesterday.

Shortly after 6 p.m. a lorry going through the tunnel lost a wheel and hitthe tunnel wall. The tunnel was full of vehicles carrying hundreds ofpeople who were coming back home from work when the accidenthappened. As a result of the lost wheel, the lorry went banging against thetunnel’s wall, cutting off the electricity system, and finally colliding withten cars.

The accident caused no casualties, but many people were panicking inthe darkness and smoke in the tunnel before the police and ambulanceservices came to their rescue. Today the tunnel is not open becausespecialists are repairing and cleaning it. Drivers can use it again from 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Our commentThe horrible disaster which happened yesterday was anaccident waiting to happen. Experts remind us that a similar accident happened justtwo years ago when 18 people were injured and 600car passengers suffered from breathing problems. It isclear now that between two years ago and the presentmoment nobody has done much. There are three main problems. First, investments intothe safety of the tunnel are not enough: the structure isgetting old and maintainance is too expensive, and thismeans more potential danger for travellers. Second, the tunnel is overcrowded, and third, there are too fewpeople who take care of monitoring the traffic. There are about one million car passengers who gothrough the H7 tunnel every day. That’s why it is veryimportant to solve these problems as quickly aspossible.

TRUE FALSE

2.1. The accident took place at about 9 p.m. today, and that’s why the tunnel is closed.

2.2. When the accident happened, there were many people in the tunnel.

2.3. The lights went out, and then the lorry hit the wall of the tunnel.

2.4. It wasn’t difficult to predict the accident.

2.5. There was another accident of this kind which happened not long ago.

2.6. When you compare the situation two years ago and now, many things have improved.

Offer 1: Into the DeepThis exhibition is located in Hull, a seaside town innortheastern England. As the economic situation in Hullgot worse several years ago, local officials decided to dosomething new. The result has been this extraordinaryexhibition called ‘The Deep’. It is Europe’s newest, deepestand most fascinating aquarium with more than 2,500 fish. All of them can be watched from an underwater tunnelwhich is built at the bottom of a gigantic, 2.3 million-litretank of water. After the visitors finish their walk in thetunnel, they can return to ground level in a transparent lift, the only one of its kind in the world. On the surface, theexhibition offers a lot of audiovisual and interactiveexhibits. For example, in the futuristic game called ‘DeepBlue One’ the visitors become crew members of aninternational research station 4 km below the ocean’ssurface in 2050. More information: [email protected]

Offer 2: To the centre of the Earth‘Vulcania’, or the European Volcanic Park, has just been

opened in France, on the northern edge of the Puysvolcano chain. Construction of this exhibition took tenyears and was not easy as the costs were getting higherand the angry locals protested against the idea. But nowregional officials hope for the exhibition to attract morethan 500,000 visitors to the area. The exhibition startswith a volcano crater through which visitors go down tothe centre of the Earth. They pass through a real lavatunnel and finally can enjoy many interactive exhibitsinside. It is a great opportunity to learn a lot aboutvolcanoes, for example, about the largest volcano everdiscovered, which is three times the height of MountEverest – and on Mars. One of the interactive games is setin an observatory where the visitors can study thevolcano’s activity and decide if they should evacuate (ornot) people living at its foot. Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the product called Amazing FoodProcessor which was made in one of your factories on the continent.I bought it last month in a supermarket in Leicester. The processor isadvertised as the fastest and most beautiful machine of this kind inthe world, but unfortunately I cannot agree.

The problems with the processor began after I brought it home andtook it out of the box. It had ugly, black marks on the surface. As I soonfound out, they could not be removed at all. What’s more, one of theprocessor’s legs turned out to be shorter than the other two. With themarks and a shorter leg it certainly does not look very attractive.

Another and perhaps more alarming problem is that the processorbroke down the moment I switched it on. It was very difficult to repairit. Now it only works for a short time and is extremely slow. It alsochooses wrong programmes. As a result, it cannot be used for anyserious cooking.

In this situation I must express my extreme disappointment with yourproduct. I am going to return it as soon as possible. I also hope I mayexpect compensation in the form of a new machine.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Meg Stapleton

BBC Personnel Recruitment

London, UK

Dear Sir or Madam,

A Apart from working for these two channels, I developed my professional know-how on twocourses, in news reporting (September 1999) and inpresentation skills the following year. The courseshave greatly expanded my understanding of the roleof the TV presenter and taught me a number ofpractical skills.

B Taking into consideration my education, qualificationsand my experience so far, I believe I would make avaluable contribution to a company like the BBC. Inaddition, working for the BBC, an opinion-making TVchannel of international reputation, would make itpossible for me not only to use my knowledge and skills, but also to learn a lot and develop further.

C I am writing in reply to the advertisement published inNews Today concerning the position of a presenter on the BBC News Roundabout programme. I believe that my education, experience and qualifications make me a suitable person for this kind of job.

D While I was studying, I began work as a presenter on two

TV channels. In 1997 I joined the Young TV channel

where I presented a live children’s programme. After

a year I started working as a presenter on local news

on London Morning TV. These two contracts (each one

a year long) helped me develop my presentation skills

and a general professional expertise in journalism.

E Presenting the news, however, is not only confined to my professional life. It is a very important area of mypersonal interests as well. I have developed a videolibrary of TV presentation strategies and am currentlyworking on a guidebook for beginners in this field. I am also interested in environment protection issues, and I enjoy reading and travelling.

G Please, consider my application for the advertised position.

I would be happy to attend an interview at any time that is

convenient to you. I enclose my CV.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

John Higgins

F First, as far as my education is concerned, in 1994 I started

studies at Oxford University in the department of political

sciences. I also attended additional courses and, as a result,

graduated in 1999 with a degree in both political studies and

mass media.

People watching the premiere ofThe Seagull – a ballet based onthe play by Chekhov – at the 28thAnnual Hamburg Ballet Daysfound it difficult to believe theireyes: the two rival lovers, Triplevand Trigorin, were identical. Butthis similarity has a very simpleexplanation: the dancers areCzech twin brothers Jiri and OttoBubenicek.

The brothers are not only similar intheir appearance but they are alsoable to move in perfect harmony witheach other. ‘We can feel each othermove,’ Jiri explains. ‘When we are

both on stage,’ Otto adds, ‘mybrother knows what I’ll do the nextsecond and I can do the same withhim.’ ‘Sometimes,’ Jiri says, ‘I thinkI’m looking into a mirror when I watch Otto.’

There are also some smalldifferences between the way inwhich the brothers dance. Jiri isfaster, stronger, and can jump higher.Otto moves more smoothly, ‘like a panther’, as his brother suggests.

The two ‘Bubis’ are sons of a travelling circus cyclist fromPrague. They completed their ballettraining at the Conservatory in

Prague and in 1993 joined thefamous Hamburg Ballet groupdirected by Neumeier. Both of themare now the principal dancers in thisgroup. As actors, they developed ina slightly different way. Otto is moresensitive and silent, and that’s whyhe often plays more romanticcharacters. Jiri, who is moreextrovert and lively, plays black, devilish parts.

The twins have never been apartfrom each other for long. ‘We willalways stay together,’ Otto declares. As Byron once wrote, ‘Happinesswas born a twin.’ For the Bubeniceks– and the people who watch them onstage – that’s doubly true.
