I will demonstrate how to use the Joomla content management system together with open digital repositories. By using Joomla with JSpace, an extension for Joomla, a museum professional and/or developer can easily make an  archive open and accessible to the world. In addition, there are thousands of other extensions which can be used to  improve and extend the dissemination of your material via the Joomla CMS. 

In the demonstration, we will set up and develop a virtual museum using the open source technologies of Joomla and JSpace extension. JSpace was initially developed to display DSpace repository assets and metadata in Joomla websites and to encourage the DSpace administrator to be able to use a more flexible user interface to display and interact with the repository.  

There are various scenarios on how Joomla and JSpace can be used to manage digital archives and storage mechanisms other than DSpace based repositories. JSpace can also be used to integrate Joomla websites with other repository platforms such as Fedora  and ePrints, as well as being able to be used in its own right as a digital repository for storing media and metadata. JSpace can interact with multiple and concurrent storage, such as Amazon Glacier or Owncloud. 

What features would be most valuable for museums? What other types of presentations could be developed around archives? JSpace used in conjunction with Joomla can provide such features as comments and ratings, social or user networks around the archive, and build content to give categorical and editorial context. Joomla and JSpace are also interoperable by various APIs, e.g. Europeana API, OAI­PMH, REST, etc. I will present findings on how  those features could be leveraged in the future by museums and heritage communities to develop more informative and engaging digital libraries and exhibitions on the web.
