Autorem materiálu a všech jeho částí, není-li uvedeno jinak, je Mgr. Soňa Quisová.Střední škola hotelnictví a služeb a Vyšší odborná škola, Opava, příspěvková organizace.

Opava – basic facts
• Opava is a statutory town• has about 60 thousand
inhabitants• lies on the Opava river
about 260 m above sea level
• it has a few suburbs (Kateřinky, Jaktař, Kylešovice) and urban parts (Komárov, Malé Hoštice, etc.)
• nicknames: White Opava, Opava of Petr Bezruč obr. 1
Opava – history
• the first written evidence about the existence of the settlement comes from 1195
• it was given the town rights by Přemysl Otakar I in 1224
• Opava became the seatof the Royal Mint in the 13th century
• it became a princedomat the beginning of the 14th century
• Opava was occupiedby Swedish troops during the Thirty Years´ War

• Opava became the residence of regional authorities for Silesia in the 18th century
• it was a district townof Silesia from 1782 to 1928
• Opava became a partof Germany after the Munich agreement
• the town was liberatedin April 1945 by the Red Army, most of the town was destroyed in fights

Opava – historical sights
The town hall – Hláska
• in the Upper Square• built in 1618• with a watch tower – open
to public – nice viewsof the surrounding and Opava
• the tower was originally wooden but destroyed by a gale
• it used to house the museum and the archives
• a theatre on the first floor • the seat of town authorities now

The Silesian Museum
• founded in 1814• the oldest in the Czech
Republic and Central Europe
• collections of animals, plants, minerals, coins, prehistory, etc.

The Silesian Theatre
• in the Upper square• the construction began in
May 1804, opened a year later
• burnt down in 1909 • reconstructed many
times• the reconstructions
of the interiors from 2010 to 2011
• we can see dramas, operas, musicals and ballet there

The churches
The Church of Virgin Mary Assumption
• a very significant Gothic sight built of bricks
• in the centre of town• built in the 14th century on a
site of a Romanesque church• with two towers – one not
finished, the other with a Baroque cupola
• declared a National cultural sight
• the interior was decoratedin the Baroque style

The Church of the Holy Spirit with the Minorite Monastery
• in Masarykova street• originally built in the Gothic
style• reconstructed into the
Baroque style later • the monastery is partly
used by the Church• the other part together
with the garden is usedby public for concertsof classical music, conferences, social events, etc.

with two chapels on both sides

Parks
• there are a lot of parks in Opava
• the oldest and largest is the Municipal Park – founded at the end of the 18th century
• a firing range used to be there
• a place for relaxation, sports activities (cycling, roller-blading), playgrounds anda nearby outdoor swimming pool from 1930

with the statue of New Opava• includes a hundred-year-old
alley of maple trees• a very favourite place is the
so-called Bird´s hill with a music pavilion
• there were aviaries with birds• we can see bronze sculptures
of birds there now

• there are a lot of super and hypermarketsin the suburbs
• there are not many shops in the centre– most of them were closed or movedinto the newly opened shopping centre called Breda & Weinstein

Schools and universities
• there are a lot of primary schools, two grammar schools and many secondary schools
• there is also a university established in 1991 which offers various fields of study
• it has 5 colleges, students can choose from bachelor's or master's degrees

• ice-hockey stadium• football stadium• athletic stadium• two swimming pools
– an indoor and outdoor one

• people can do roller-blading and joggingin the Municipal Park

• nature lovers can go horse-riding
Culture and entertainment
• there are some festivals people can visit e.g. Bezručova Opava– focusing on fine art, literature, film and music
• Opava Cantat – the competition festivalof choirs

in the Multifunctional Hall in the Municipal park
