The f i r s t 100 p lan ts gaze t ted as ra re f l o ra (Rye anc l Hopper198 I ) we re l i s ted i n t he Governmen t Gaze t te o f November 14 ,1980 . A t t he t ime o f t he i r gaze t ta l , each o f t hese p lan ts hadbeen searched for and each was bel ieved to have less than a fewthousand rep roduc t i ve l y ma tu re p lan ts a l i ve i n t he w i l d .Subsequent ly, further surveys of these and other reputedly rareplants were unclertaken by of f icers ani l consultanls working forthe Depar tmen t o f F i she r ies and Wi ld1 i fe , and by o the rbo tan i s t s work ing on the S ta te rs f l o ra .

These su rveys es tab l i shed tha t f ou r o f t he f i r s t 100 gaze t tedrare plants were far more common than was previously thoughtand each rras ai lequately represented in nature reserves andnat ional parks (Dryandra !9I9Eg, D. pulchel la, Melaleucabax te r i and Pen tape l t i s s i l va t i ca were the spec ies i nql-estion ) . Add-iEion;I1t; evf-clence was obtained that a f urther36 species should be gazetted as rare. A recommendat ion tothis ef fect was put to ani l accepted by the Flora committee ofthe wes te rn Aus t ra l i an w i l d l i f e Au tho r i t y , by the w i l d l i f eAu tho r i t y i t se l f , and by the M in i s te r . Consequen t l y , on 12March 1982 , a rev i sed schec lu le o f ra re f l o ra was pub l i shed bythe M in i s te r i n t he cove rnmen t Gaze t te (Tab le 1 ) .
