Short description of event:

A lecture entitled: 'Equality, human rights and religion or belief: time to get out of the courtroom?' given by Alice Donald, (Senior Research Fellow in the Human Rights and Social Justice Research Institute at London Metropolitan University).

The interaction between the law and religion or belief is rarely out of the headlines.  Debate rages about whether the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion receives sufficient, or too much, protection in the courts. In the past decade in Britain, both the quantity and the reach of the law have expanded as the state seeks to facilitate and regulate the activities of religious bodies in the context of a multi‐faith society.  In this lecture, Alice Donald explored the impact of equality and human rights law in relation to religion or belief  and the way that the law is applied in the workplace and public services.  The lecture drew on recent research for the Equality and Human Rights Commission and proposed ways of advancing public discussion about this controversial area.Alice Donald’s research focuses on the impact and implementation of human rights in the UK and the system of human rights protection in Europe.  Previously, Alice spent 15 years in the BBC World Service, as a broadcast journalist, programme editor and commissioner.

Slough Faith Partnership; Slough and Burnham Climate Concern Group

Short description of event:

As a new venture for 2012, Slough Faith Partnership supported a project to encourage local action on the environment across faith communities. It was called "Shared World" and aimed to bring people together in a shared space as a focus in making decisions towards a practical and local expression of our responsibility towards our shared environment. The ongoing project is a partnership between Slough Faith Partnership and the Burnham and Slough Deanery Climate Concern Group.

The first gathering was at St. Paul’s Church, Stoke Road at 6pm on Saturday Nov 10th. Feedback from this event then informed a second event at 7pm on Friday Nov 23rd at The Centre, Farnham Road. At this event, the spotlight turned to the state of the environment both globally and locally, not only because of its crucial importance in contemporary thinking, but because most faiths have an awareness of our relationship to creation as a significant part of their self‐understanding.

Short description of event:

A week of talks and workshops organised by the Jewish Studies programme particularly examining the legacy of the Revd Dr James Parkes for inter faith relations.

James Parkes (1896‐1981) was one of the most remarkable figures in British Christianity in the twentieth century. He became a priest in 1926 and was affiliated to the Student Christian Movement and the International Student Service, Geneva, through which he began to confront the growth of nationalist and racialist organisations in Europe during the late 1920s. Thereafter, he devoted his career to fighting antisemitism and seeking out its origins.

Parkes believed that in order to establish future dialogue between Christians and Jews it was essential to understand what Christians had thought about Jews and the Jewish religion throughout the ages.

Sunday mornings take the form of Rolling Worship, which has been designed in a way that fits in with today's sometimes hectic lifestyle ‐ the "Come When You Can & Go When You Like" approach means that we can tailor your Sunday worship to cater for your own needs. We start with a more traditional style, which flows into a more contemporary approach.

As a new venture for 2012,  Slough Faith Partnership supported a project to encourage local action on the environment across faith communities. Called 'Shared World' it aimed to bring people together in a shared space as a focus in making decisions towards a practical and local expression of our responsibility towards our shared environment. The project is a partnership between Slough Faith Partnership and the Burnham and Slough Deanery Climate Concern Group.

The first gathering will be at St. Paul’s Church, Stoke Road at 6pm on Saturday Nov 10th. Feedback from this event will then inform a second event at 7pm on Friday Nov 23rd at The Centre, Farnham Road. At this event, the spotlight will turn to the state of the environment both globally and locally, not only because of its crucial importance in contemporary thinking, but because most faiths have an awareness of our relationship to creation as a significant part of their self‐understanding. Contact Malcolm 07909 100675
