It has been 51 years since Jamaica’s independence. For about 500 years prior to that, Jamaica had been

ruled by Spain and then Britain and, in addition to the indigenous people on the island, various people

from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East were brought there as slaves. After an era of conflict stemming

from ethnic differences between groups, Jamaicans were able to overcome their differences and the

cultures and ways of thinking of the various groups fused giving birth to Jamaica’s own style of music and

the Jamaican language, Patois.

The lecturer who was born and raised in Jamaica will discuss the history which forms the roots

of Jamaica’s culture, while introducing the music, language, cooking, dress, modern culture and lifestyle

of Jamaica, as well as talking about what it means to be a Jamaican. Come join this presentation and

deepen your multicultural understanding.
