Partnership 2Gether Afula-Gilboa - SNEC

Partnership 2Gether (P2G) is a project dedicated to foster connections between

Israelis and worldwide Jewry, as part of the Jewish Agency's partnerships

platform.

Our Partnership creates meaningful encounters between Israelis living in the

Afula- Gilboa region in Israel and Jews living in 11 Jewish communities in

Connecticut and Massachusetts (commonly known as SNEC: Southern New

England Consortium).

We believe this engagement is a vital element in strengthening our

communities both in Israel and overseas.

Our partnership engages a wide variety of community members by offering

living bridge programs, connecting youth, students, professionals, artists,

community leaders, schools and others. By hosting delegations on both sides of

the ocean we create meaningful face to face encounters. The partnership

supports community development programs, creating a significant impact and

generating real change in the lives of the less fortunate in the Afula- Gilboa

region.

One of the partnership's most celebrated programs is “The Young Emissaries"

program, where pairs of high school graduates from Israel postpone their

military service for a year, in order to volunteer in Jewish communities

throughout New England, and bring Israel closer to them.

We inspire community members in Israel and overseas to explore and broaden

their connection to the Jewish People and to Israel.

Sefer Tehillim, the Book of Psalms, has been

read, prayed, recited, studied, sung and cried

again and again throughout time and place.

It's words comfort us, challenge us, bring us

together and express our deepest sorrows and

joys.

Over the past year, nine partnerships (Zug in

Hebrew) were formed between nine Israeli

and nine American artists. They connected

across the ocean to delve into the Book of

Psalms in “Havruta” partner study and to

create artworks based on their learning.

Havruta study is a powerful experience. A deep

bond was formed between the valleys and hills

of the Afula Gilboa region of Israel and the

Southern New England region of the United

States. The artists spoke weekly, using texts

and questions provided by the Hadar Institute,

and revealed new meanings about the text,

about one another, and about themselves.

The art that was born from these discussions

is multi-faceted, each piece portraying a

different aspect of the Havruta experience

and of the Book of Psalms. Look closely and

you will find tears and joy, sound and silence,

grief and hope.

We are thrilled to host the first public exhibition

of Project Zug at The Mishkan Museum of Art,

Ein Harod, as the museum celebrates 80 years of

collecting and exhibiting art and of creating

connections and conversations.

Every “Zug” in the exhibition is an open

conversation, and we hope you will join it.

“You turned my lament into dancing” (Psalms 30:12)

The theme of our pair of works is music, dance, and rejoicing in celebration of God

and all creation, as voiced in the psalms. We are both drawn to the idea of music and

dance in the psalms - after all, psalms are a kind of song. Of the psalms we studied, the

line: "You turned my lament into dancing - You undid my sackcloth and girded me

with joy - That my whole being might sing hymns to you endlessly" (Psalms 30:12-13)

best captures this feeling of celebration. Moria expresses her love of dance, which

deepens her connection to God and the universe; and Barbara enjoys all kinds of music

for the same reason; so they naturally both felt a connection to the psalms of rejoicing.

Barbara's drawing of a joyful dancer springs from Moria's description of her feelings

about dance and the connection to divine creation, as the dancer responds with God's

joy and light to the darkness of our trials and difficulties in life.

"הפכת מספדי למחול" (תהלים ל, 12)

במהלך היצירה לקחנו את המוסיקה, הריקוד ואת שמחת הרוח שיש בהודיה אל ה' ואל כל ברואיו כפי

שמתבטא במזמור. שתינו נמשכנו לרעיון של המוסיקה והריקוד שמתבטאים במזמור. אחרי הכול, מזמורי

תהילים עצמם, הם כמו שירים. התמקדנו ביצירה בפסוק אשר ביטא עבורנו בצורה הטובה ביותר רעיון

זה: "הפכת מספדי למחול לי פתחת שקי ותאזרני שמחה. למען יזמר כבוד וא ידם ה' אהי עולם אודך"

“ C o n n e c t i o n ”

Our art pieces were inspired

by the theme of connection.

Connection to one another

through the project, connection to community through psalms, connection to

something greater than ourselves through prayer.

Erela says: “I was born and raised in Kibbutz Maoz Haim, a descendant of the founders

of the kibbutz, which was founded in 1937. The stories of the period, the clear goal and

the vision of the founders, always fascinated me, and sometimes made me feel that I

was born a generation too late.

In the picture, a group of pioneers join forces in transforming the wilderness and

establishing Kibbutz Maoz Hayim in the Beit Shean Valley, on the Jordanian border,

between marshes and mosquitoes and with unbearable heat.

This wonderful group of people expresses for me, above all, the concept of “Brothers

dwelling together” (Tehillim 133: 1). The courageous connection between them is

reflected not only in the building of the Land of Israel, but also in the cooperative and

egalitarian form of life that the kibbutz invented."

Jennifer says: “The concept of connection inspired my piece, which is based on the

Ashrei prayer: 'happy are the people who dwell in your house' (Psalms 84:5), implying

that those praying are part of a household. My piece is about opening the confines of

the heart, something that is at once fully organic yet safely encased, literally and

figuratively. Psalms 145:16 is considered most significant and says, "You open your

hand..." there is a Yad, or hand, protruding out of the top of the piece pointing at the

viewer. The Yad is also shaped as the pointer we use to read Torah, from which hangs

an Oragami crane embroidered with the word Peace, or Shalom”.

הכרנו ביוזמה של הסוכנות היהודית, כשהמטרה היא היכרות והדברות של שתי יהודיות -

אמריקאית וישראלית, והאמצעי הוא לימוד שבועי של תהילים בהנחיה המקוונת של "פרויקט זוג".

למן ההתחלה היה ברור לשתינו שהנושא המשותף של הפרויקטים שלנו יהיה "חיבור בין אנשים", כשכל אחת

מאיתנו לקחה את הרעיון למקום הייחודי שלה.

אראלה מספרת: "נולדתי וגדלתי בקיבוץ מעוז חיים, צאצאית למייסדי הקיבוץ אשר נוסד בשנת 1937, בשיטת

"חומה ומגדל". סיפורי התקופה, המטרה הברורה והחזון בעיניים, תמיד ריתקו אותי, ולעתים גרמו לי להרגיש

שנולדתי דור אחד מאוחר מדי.

ג'ניפר מוצאת החיבור בפסוק: "אשרי יושבי בית עוד יהללו סלה" (פד, 5), שהוא חלק מהתפילה ומסמל

חיבור קהילתי. כמו כן, הביטוי: "פותח את-יד" (קמ"ה, 16) מיוצג ביצירה באמצעות יד שיוצאת מהמשטח

ומצביעה לעבר המתבונן, אותה יד יכולה לשמש גם בקריאה בתורה.

"HaMakom" as a metaphor for G-D

The Book of Psalms is akin to a blueprint of G-D's nature and the vast range of human

emotions, relationships and experiences. They are universally recognized as a

foundation or bedrock upon which to stand face to face with G-D and oneself.

Together our work suggests that psalms are "The Place" to lay down all hopes, fears,

desires and praises, and from within “HaMakom” all prayers are affirmed, held and

sustained.

Judy offers a mixed media canvas. Her work relates to the entire Book of Psalms. Her

elements portray the psalms as the "cornerstone".

Francine's assemblage of found objects reflects her search for this foundation and her

journey to reach “HaMakom”.

"המקום" כמטאפורה לה'

ספר תהלים הוא שרטוט של טבע האלוהים, המגוון העצום של רגשות אנושיים, יחסים וחוויות. הם מוכרים

בצורה אוניברסלית כבסיס שדרכו ניתן לעמוד פנים מול פנים מול ה'.

יחד, העבודה שלנו מציעה פרשנות לפיה מזמורי תהילים הם "המקום" להטיל בו את כל התקוות, הפחדים,

התשוקות והשבחים, ומתוך "המקום" כל התפילות מתממשות.

ג'ודי יוצרת בטכניקה מעורבת על קנבס. עבודתה מתקשרת לספר כולו. האלמנטים שלה מתארים תהילים

כ"אבן הפינה".

“Even as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are

with me; Your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Psalms 23:4)

Both artists grapple with this verse in their respective artworks.

How do we maintain a relationship with God in the midst of great pain?

Keren and Pamela created a deep bond through their conversations about grief, God,

and spirituality that emerged through their study of Psalms. Keren's painful loss of her

younger brother Itai in the Israeli army brought her to understand that those who have

the courage to go towards the unknown, to reach painful places and to ask challenging

questions, will merit to grow and reveal deep wonders of God.

As Keren and Pamela began to contemplate their art project at the conclusion of their

study, Pamela's younger brother took his life by suicide. Not only did both women then

feel that they had been divinely brought together, but Pamela now experienced what

Keren already knew — that through pain a person can become more sensitive, more

loving, wiser, and more compassionate.

For the two weeks that Pamela's brother was missing in May 2018, hundreds of people

from all over the United States recited Psalms on his behalf. Pamela herself immersed

herself in Psalms 23 and 133. Therefore, her art integrates Psalms 23:4 along with Psalms

133:1, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell together.”

Her work also reflects her brother's inability to access that love from his גיא צל מוות.

שתי האמניות עוסקות בפסוק זה ביצירותיהן. הן מתמודדות עם השאלה: איך ניתן לשמור על מערכת יחסים

עם האל ברגעים של כאב עמוק?

ההתעמקות של קרן עזר ביחס העדין והמורכב בין האל לברואיו, לאחר שהיא איבדה את אחיה הצעיר – איתי

אילוז בצבא, הובילה אותה להבחנה בין כאב מצמיח לכאב מנמיך. הבורא לימד את קרן שלמי שיש את האומץ

ללכת אל הלא נודע, לגעת במקומות כואבים, להסכים לשאול שאלות מאתגרות, מתריסות, תמימות, סקרניות,

יזכה לגדול ולגלות את נפלאות האל העמוקות והחבויות.

קרן חוותה את ההדרכה הגבוהה של הבורא, בזמן שכתבה את סיפור המסע שלה לגילוי עצמי שנקרא "אל

העולם שלך". בו היא התבקשה לכתוב מתוך הכאב את הצמיחה אל עולם חדש המתגלה – מציאת מהות

ומשמעות גבוהים יותר.

הקשר בין פמלה וקרן החל במסגרת לימודי "זוג" והן אף נפגשו בפברואר 2018. עם זאת, באמצע תהליך

היצירה אחיה של פמלה שלח יד בנפשו. החיבור בין שתי הנשים העמיק ופמלה חוותה מה שקרן כבר ידעה -

האדם יכול דרך הכאב להיות יותר רגיש, אוהב, פיקח ומלא חמלה.

“Tzaddik Katamar Yifrach” (psalms, 92:13)

In Regina's painting, she represents a date palm thriving in a desert environment,

expressing the psalmist's expression of the tzaddik's ability to thrive from his

glorification of G-d. She also portrays the blowing sand and windy conditions, which

the psalmist uses as symbols for the wicked person.

Note how the palm tree remains undaunted with its roots firmly planted in the ground

and its upper branches extending to the heavens. The cedars of Lebanon seen in the

distance inspire the psalmist to consider the concept of the righteous person being

similarly sturdy and unshaken.

Chaim's artwork is a wood carving of the same verse. Hebrew is read horizontally

from right to left. A palm tree grows bottom up, and so the plaque is read from the

bottom up.

"צדיק כתמר יפרח" (תהלים צ"ב, 13)

בעבודתה של רג'ינה, באמצעות ייצוג של עץ תמר הצומח במדבר, מחבר ספר תהלים

משתהה מיכולתו של הצדיק לשגשג בעבודתו את ה'. ביצירה מתוארים החול הנע

ומזג האוויר הסוער שאותם מחבר תהלים מדמה לאדם הרשע. עץ התמר נותר ללא

חת בתנאים אלה, עם שורשים שנטועים היטב באדמה והענפים העליונים מזדקפים

לשמים. בצדו העליון-ימני של הציור נראה ארז הלבנון במרחק, כדימוי נוסף לצדיק

שעומד איתן ויציב. השימוש בצבעים בהירים מאחורי עץ התמר הגדול באופן לא

פרופורציונלי מתארים את הזהר של הנוכחות האלוהית. הפרחים המקיפים את בסיס

העץ גם הם משגשגים, זאת בדומה לפריחת הישוב הכפרי שנראה בצדו השמאלי

התחתון של היצירה.

עבודתו של חיים היא גילוף עץ. בעברית קוראים וכותבים במאוזן מהימין לשמאל.

עץ תמר צומח מלמטה למעלה, היצירה, שהיא שלט מעץ, גם כן נקראת מלמטה

למעלה.

“Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; and Thy glory be above all the earth”

(Psalms 108:6)

In our Zug learning we looked for the God-nature relationship. We found the essence

of this relationship in the verse: ”Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; and Thy

glory be above all the earth” (psalms 108:6). The entire universe, all heaven and earth,

contains God and expresses His glory.

The beauty of nature, in Afula Gilboa and in Hebron Massachusetts, throughout the

seasons, in sunrise and sunset, in magical landscapes that constantly change color,

express the verse we have chosen.

Through their different art techniques, Sue-Ellen and Nava each connect to nature and

to one another with the colors of sunset.

"רומה על-שמים ה' ועל כל-הארץ כבוד" (תהלים קח, 6)

בלימוד המשותף שלנו חיפשנו את החיבור שבין אלוהים לטבע. כשלמדנו ביחד את תהלים מצאנו את

ההתגלמות של חיבור זה בפסוק: "רומה על-שמים ה' ועל כל-הארץ כבוד" (תהלים קח, 6). למעשה היקום

כולו שמים וארץ מכילים את האל ומבטאים את כבודו.

הטבע במלוא תפארתו, בעפולה גלבוע ובחברון מסצ'וסטס, בחודשי השנה, בשקיעות ובזריחות, בנופים

קסומים המשנים צבעיהם ומראם, מבטא לטעמנו את הפסוק שבחרנו.

“I shout for joy

at your handiwork”

(92:5)

Studying together, the artists found the psalms ignited a common set of emotions.

While we sometimes approached the texts from different perspectives, we would land

on a shared set of interpretations. Our single artwork integrates our ideas and

approaches to the text and art by juxtaposing Heidi's three-dimensional assemblage

techniques with Shay's landscape oil painting to depict Psalm 92. “I shout for joy at

your handiwork, (92:5) …though the wicked sprout like grass (92:8)…The righteous bloom

like a date-palm; they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon. (92:13)” We depict the joy of God's

creation and people's praise of God "with a ten-stringed harp, with voice and lyre

together" (92:4), marred by the snake as representation of evil. In turn, the beauty and

fruitfulness of the world, "planted in the house of the Lord… they flourish in the courts

of our God... In old age they still produce fruit; they are full of sap and freshness"

(92:14-15) - subdue the wicked evildoers.

“How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalms 13:2)

Psalm 13 is a bold call to Gd; an unabashed demand for Gd's involvement in human life.

The pleading question “?עד אנה” “How long?” repeats over and over again throughout.

We are struck by this Psalm, and by the permission it grants humans to call out to Gd

from great despair. Jeff relates this human cry to the piercing blast of the Shofar, and

expresses it in warm tones and broad strokes in his oil painting. Tanya's woodcut

focuses on the repetition of the words “?עד אנה” “How long?” and alludes to the

meditative repetition of letters, words, and phrases as individuals plead with Gd

through the text of Psalms during times of great personal and communal pain.

"Hallelujah, Praise God in His sanctuary, praise Him in the Firmament of His heavenly

power" (Psalms 150:1)

Our paintings try to express our impression of the Psalms' poet, standing almost

speechless, trying to describe in words his admiration of God's creation.

Janet Newman's acrylic painting shows the whole creation as a part of humankind's

admiring face. It reflects in it, is a part of it, surrounds it and supports it. She wrote:

"The face will have oceans with sun and sky. Around the head, forests, mountains,

flowers, waterfalls:

'The heavens declare the glory of God' (Psalms, 19:2)

Zohar, a calligraphist, wrote and painted Psalms matching verses in Hebrew and

English.
