Writingdevelopsstudentsunderstandingofsentencestructure,providinghandsonexperiencewithcompletesentencesandbuildtowritingcompleteparagraphs.Studentswillusegraphicorganizerstofollowthewritingprocesstowriteforavarietyofgenresincluding;personalnarratives,fictionalstories,poetry,andnonfictiontexts.Studentswilldevelopvocabularyskillsbylearningandidentifyinghomographs,synonyms,andantonyms.Studentsareintroducedtorootsandaffixes,andwordrelationships.Onthemechanicsside,studentswillbeintroducedtocursivehandwriting.Variousgrammartopicsareintroducedtobuildstudentsuseofwritingconventions.
SpeakingStudentswillbegiventheopportunitytousetheirverbalcommunicationskillsinavarietyofprojects.Studentswillparticipateinclassroomdiscussions.Studentswillalsocompareandcontrastwrittenwordversusspokenword.Additionally,studentswillintegratemultimediaelementsintocreatingpresentations.
