His father Barack Obama Sr. was born and raised in a small village in Kenya.

He grew up herding goats with his father who was a domestic servant to the British.

He won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and move to Hawaii and pursue his dreams in America.

His mother grew up in a small-town in Kansas.

Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor

Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line

After the war they moved west to Hawaii.

Early Life

It was at the University of Hawaii where Barack’s parents met and got married on 2nd February 1961.

Got divorced in 1964 as Obama Sr. went to Harvard University on scholarship were he remarried and moved back to Kenya.

After the divorce, his mother married another transfer student Lolo Soetoro and moved to Jakarta in 1967.

Early Education

Several incidents in Indonesia left Dunham afraid for her son's safety and education so, at the age of 10, Barack was sent back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents.

Obama enrolled in the esteemed Punahou Academy, excelling in basketball and graduating with academic honors in 1979.

As one of only three black students at the school, Obama became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African-American

College Education

Then Obama moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to attend Occidental College.

In February 1981, he made his first public speech, calling for Occidental's divestment from South Africa.

Later in 1981 he transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialty in international relations and graduated with a B.A. in 1983.

Urge for Humanity

Barack put law school and corporate life on hold after college and moved to Chicago in 1985

Became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment.

Soon realized that in order to truly improve the lives of people it would take not just a change at the local level, but a change in the laws and in the politics.

Obama as a Lawyer

He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard in 1991.

He became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.

Returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law.

In 1991, Obama accepted a two-year position as Visiting Law and Government Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School to work on his first book.

He then served as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and as a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, teaching constitutional law.

Obama as State Senator

Finally, his advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, and he was elected in 1996.

Worked for reforming Ethics and Health care laws.

He sponsored a law increasing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare.

In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

In May 2002, Obama commissioned a poll to assess his prospects in a 2004 U.S. Senate race

He created a campaign committee, began raising funds and lined up political media consultant David Axelrod by August 2002,

Formal announcement of his candidacy for the US Senate was made in January 2003.

US Senate Campaign

Apposition of Bush administration’s 2003 Invasion of Iraq. 2nd October 2002, addressed first high profile Anti-

war rally in Chicago. March 2003, addressed another Anti-war rally, “Its

not too late” to stop the war. He sponsored and led unanimous, legislation to

monitor Racial Profiling. Active engagement with police organizations in

enacting Death penalty reforms.

US Senate Campaign

In the March 2004 primary election, Obama won in an unexpected manner which overnight made him a rising star within the national Democratic Party, started speculation about a presidential future, and led to the reissue of his memoir, Dreams from My Father.

Keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts in July seen by 9.1 million viewers.

Republican opponent Jack Ryan withdraws from the general election, later Alan Keyes accepted the Illinois Republican Party's nomination to replace Ryan.

In the November 2004 general election, Obama won with 70% of the vote and sworn as Senator on January 4, 2005.

He is the first African-American to reach the highest office in the land, an unlikely candidate fulfilling a once-impossible dream.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama inspired hope in millions of Americans and people around the world.

Accomplishments of Obama

Public consider economy as a major indicator of Obama’s presidential effectiveness.

Obama inherited complex fiscal crisis therefore public could not see drastic changes quickly.

The way problems are handled by Obama can not be compared with the way previous presidents have handled them in the past.

Obama gave healthcare access to 48 million people and tax credits to 29 million people to help pay for it.

500,000 families will be saved from bankruptcy due to medical expenses

Accomplishments of Obama Economy, Finances, and Jobs

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 added or saved 2.1 million jobs by the fourth quarter of 2009 and a total of 3 million jobs to date

The addition of the jobs helped boost the economy by 3.5% and decrease unemployment by 2.1%.

Education – The Obama Treasury passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, which will increase Pell Grants and keeps interests rates low on subsidized student federal loans.

President Obama actually made transparency a priority and published the first ever White House blog.

He has also led live question-and-answer sessions Office of Urban Affairs – America’s low-income and

crime-ridden cities are now getting the attention they deserve.

The Obama administration created this office in the White House to serve America’s struggling cities. From the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $2 billion will be allocated to Byrne Grants, which funds anti-gang and anti-gun task forces

Forests – More than 2 million acres of forest land, thousands of miles of rivers and multiple national parks have been put under federal protection.

The Automobile Industry- President Obama wants to raise the car mileage from 25 mpg to 35.5 by 2016. The structural changes, managerial reorganization and cuts in employment helped pave the way for a more efficient Automobile industry.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research – President Obama lifted the Bush-era restrictions on federal funding for this research, the first patient is being treated for their partially paralyzed spine.

Challenges faced by Barack Obama

Obama's challenges were many and to varying degrees , which will affect citizens more directly today, like the economy, health care, education, and global warming.

Obama also has to look into the well-being of the African-American citizens of America; their education, job opportunities, housing, entrepreneurship, safety, etc

These challenges are furthermore framed by his campaign promises of change.

Challenges faced by Barack Obama There are many other challenges as he

mentioned in one of his speeches: "Our nation is at war. Our economy is in crisis. Millions of Americans are losing their jobs and their homes. They're worried about how they'll afford college for their kids or pay the stack of bills on their kitchen table," he said. "And most of all, they are anxious and uncertain about the future -- about whether this generation of Americans will be able to pass on what's best about this country to our children and their children," he said.

Obama – Transformational Leader President Obama, who demonstrates the

archetypes Conceiver, Transformer and Healer, will need to master the strengths of his passions while at the same time managing the vulnerabilities of each.

Obama thrives in change. The chaos of current world environment is a playing field that invites Transformational Leader to construct a better future and empower others in working towards it. As a transformer, he is doing well with bringing changes and taking people with him.

vulnerability of his passion to change things too quickly, before others are ready to embrace the needed change and support the effort is secured.

Most Democrats would say Obama is a good leader because of actions he's taken on critical issues about the economy, the war and health care.

Most Republican detractors would point to the very same actions on the very same issues and say he's a bad leader.

The country has invested billions in health information technology, education, energy efficiency, state and local governments, and broadband technology. He has set a new tone for American foreign policy and repaired shattered relationships. And despite criticisms that he is a “tax and spend liberal,” one-third of his economic stimulus package went for tax cuts.

GRADE – INCOMPLETE When leaders build the next generation,

they pay attention to building the skills necessary not for the short term but for the future. Obama is laying the groundwork for next generation skills, development in climate change, healthcare, infrastructure development and a host of other areas. It's too soon to give him a grade. Small business leaders in particular are nervous about where he might go

Obama himself was the story of leadership as change. Anyone who read his 1994 autobiography was introduced to a person always willing to question his own beliefs and talents and constantly strive to improve himself.

Intuitive Feelings regarding Obama’s Future

After two years in office, it's clear that Obama has many of the character attributes of a great leader but has not yet delivered results. People are still hopeful that he can narrow his agenda and choose some clearer priorities that can be executed.
