Leadership Lessons

The Change called Obama

Integrity

When Barack Obama was selecting his closest advisors, he told each person he wanted zero drama-meaning no backstabbing, damaging media leaks or anything that would detract from the campaign

Praise everyone who has participated

Obama emphasized his grassroots approach by bringing organizers onto the stage as well.

Participation

Like a tough law professor, Obama will call on staffers who haven’t spoken up.

Consistency

National finance chairman Penny Pritzker said Obama decided he wanted to run the campaign like a disciplined business

Feedback - clear, direct, and immediate

If he’s happy, you know it. If he prefers to do something different, you know it, says (Valerie) Jarrett (an Obama campaign advisor).

Innovation

The idea for Obama University, a unique training program for first-time fundraisers, came not from campaign leadership but from three supporters

LEADING BY LISTENING

He wants to see disagreements aired in front of him.

Accomplishments of Obama

Public consider economy as a major indicator of Obama’s presidential effectiveness.

Challenges faced by Barack Obama

Obama's challenges were many and to varying degrees , which will affect citizens more directly today, like the economy, health care, education, and global warming.

Obama also has to look into the well-being of the African-American citizens of America; their education, job opportunities, housing, entrepreneurship, safety, etc

These challenges are furthermore framed by his campaign promises of change.

Challenges faced by Barack Obama There are many other challenges as he

mentioned in one of his speeches: "Our nation is at war. Our economy is in crisis. Millions of Americans are losing their jobs and their homes. They're worried about how they'll afford college for their kids or pay the stack of bills on their kitchen table," he said. "And most of all, they are anxious and uncertain about the future -- about whether this generation of Americans will be able to pass on what's best about this country to our children and their children," he said.

Obama – Transformational Leader President Obama, who demonstrates the

archetypes Conceiver, Transformer and Healer, will need to master the strengths of his passions while at the same time managing the vulnerabilities of each.

Obama thrives in change. The chaos of current world environment is a playing field that invites Transformational Leader to construct a better future and empower others in working towards it. As a transformer, he is doing well with bringing changes and taking people with him.

Obama – Transformational Leader He also needs to be cautious about the

vulnerability of his passion to change things too quickly, before others are ready to embrace the needed change and support the effort is secured.

Part 4: Obama’s Future as Leader(Syed Hamid Jamal)

Most Democrats would say Obama is a good leader because of actions he's taken on critical issues about the economy, the war and health care.

Most Republican detractors would point to the very same actions on the very same issues and say he's a bad leader.

What Other believes ?

What Obama believes ?

“President Barack Obama admitted in an interview aired on Friday that he focused on policies but failed to rally people behind those initiatives, leading to Republicans' big gains in congressional elections this week.”

What Analyst believe about his Future ?

Five common Feature as Leader1) Be a Strategist and Shape the Future

2) Be an Executor and Make Things Happen

3) Be a Talent Manager: Engage Today's Talent

4) Be a Human Capital Developer: Build the Next Generation

5) Be Personally Proficient

1) Be a Strategist and Shape the Future

GRADE – D They say "you can't ride two horses at the same

time because you only have one behind". Right now President Obama is trying to ride multiple horses at the same time and the result is a lack of focus and direction.

Parallel execution rather setting Priorities Economy (Recession) - Inherited Two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) – Inherited Health Care - Initiated Environmental Reforms – Initiated Etc.

2) Be an Executor and Make Things Happen

GRADE – C As the sign on Bill Clinton's desk said about

what was his highest priority to execute: "It's the economy, stupid." Obama could learn from this type of focus.

Initiatives Overload Economy (Recession) - Inherited Two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) – Inherited Health Care - Initiated Environmental Reforms – Initiated Etc.

3) Be a Talent Manager: Engage Today's Talent

GRADE – B Leaders who engage talent gets the short-

term hard work done while maintaining high esprit de corps. Obama has mastered this skill..

He created a national network of organizers and led that "talent" not just by inspiring support or cooperation, but by building a devoted fan base that would put their lives on hold for the sake of his mission

4) Be a Human Capital Developer: Build the Next Generation

GRADE – INCOMPLETE When leaders build the next generation,

they pay attention to building the skills necessary not for the short term but for the future. Obama is laying the groundwork for next generation skills, development in climate change, healthcare, infrastructure development and a host of other areas. It's too soon to give him a grade. Small business leaders in particular are nervous about where he might go

5) Be Personally Proficient: Invest in Yourself

GRADE – A Leaders must invest in their intellectual,

spiritual, emotional and physical improvement in order to deal with the demands of leadership

Obama himself was the story of leadership as change. Anyone who read his 1994 autobiography was introduced to a person always willing to question his own beliefs and talents and constantly strive to improve himself.

Intuitive Feelings regarding Obama’s Future

After two years in office, it's clear that Obama has many of the character attributes of a great leader but has not yet delivered results. People are still hopeful that he can narrow his agenda and choose some clearer priorities that can be executed.

That's what good leaders do.

Thank you..
