AppointmentsOut of school appointments should be made outside school hours. If this is not possible, and the appointment takes place during class time, the student must present a note, or dentist’s card, at the College Office before signing out to leave the school grounds, and must sign in at the Office on their return.
AttendanceThe College is responsible for all students while they are at school, therefore their whereabouts must be known from 8:45 am to 3:10 pm. Parents must ring the Attendance Officer on extension 828 and register an absence on the day. If it is known in advance that a student will be absent for a few days, the College should be notified. Requests for longer term absences must be in writing and addressed to the Principal.
A Truancy Officer is employed by the College to liaise with families over attendance matters.
Base Donation:*This provides for the educational, cultural, sporting activities and social activities, prizes and sundry expenses on behalf of the students as approved by the Board of Trustees. Donations are as follows (including GST):
$95 for one student or
$140 for two or more from one family *subject to change
BehaviourStudents are under the control of the College from the time they set out for school in the morning until they arrive home in the afternoon. This is important, and it explains why the College is vitally concerned with matters of dress, behaviour and rules of the road.
Students must obey the rode code when using a bicycle or motor vehicle to and from school. Students are expected to go straight home after school and not loiter in streets or around shops.
Collecting Students From SchoolDue to the continued congestion of vehicles and fast traffic in the staff carpark and the undue risk that this presents to students and staff we close the front entry gate prior to the end of the school day. We ask that you do not use the exit gate to enter the staff carpark at this time.
We also request that you do not park illegally outside the school gates as this creates a hazard to both pedestrians and traffic.
Contacting Students During ClassesThis is discouraged as it is not always convenient for the office and teaching staff. Due to safety considerations parents / caregivers and others must report to the school office on arrival in the school grounds. Under no circumstances can we have the public wandering through the school.
Elective Parent ChargesFees may be charged for any materials that a student will keep, consume or take home. These fees must be paid to receive or partake in an activity and must be paid within Term 1 to ensure a student can remain in that course.
IllnessThose students who feel ill must report to the college office. They must not in any circumstances go home without first reporting to the office, as it is possible a seriously ill student may be in need of assistance without either the school or the parents becoming aware of it.
Please ensure that a second contact name and phone number is available on the College database to allow us to contact an adult during the school day if your student is sick. We do not allow students to remain in our sickbay for extended periods during the day.
Leaving The GroundsDuring the day students are NOT permitted to leave the school grounds. Students will NOT be issued with a lunch pass. No student will be permitted to go to the shops, they need to use the school canteen or have a lunch with them.
Learning ClassesFor their curriculum learning, Year 9 and 10 students will be placed into learning classes except for the Design Learning class and the Sports Performance classes. These are based on a student’s academic performance across curriculum areas. The learning classes are named after well-known Mount Maunganui streets. Students will be taught English, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Science and Mathematics in their learning classes.
RaukuraEach Year 9 and 10 student at Mount Maunganui College will be placed into a Raukura, this translates to English as a feather. Each Raukura will identify to one of the four school houses: Takahē, Huia, Kotuku and Ruru. Each Raukura has a Raukura leader, a teacher who will support the students in any area required. Students will meet as a Raukura during form time. This form or Raukura time is for 15 minutes each day, excluding Wednesday. This is ultimately their home room or “nest” and they will stay in this Raukura while at the college.
TransportMatapihi has a Ministry funded “rural service”. As of April 2019 all other buses are a pay service. Refer to www.baybus.co.nz/school-hopper/ for further information and up to date details.
Uniform Students at Mount Maunganui College are required to wear school uniform in Years 9 to 13. The College expects students to be in correct uniform and to wear it with pride. The complete uniform is to be worn to and from school.

Design Learning Class (DLN)
Elite Performing Arts Class (EPA)
What Is Design Learning?Students are invited to apply to be part of a class that will undertake an integrated learning programme. Students in this class will learn some core curriculum objectives in a setting where they are able to design meaningful projects. These project experiences will allow for a deeper engagement with knowledge than is often possible in regular class settings. Alongside the knowledge gained through project work students will also strengthen capabilities and dispositions that will be valuable for life beyond secondary school.
The programme and environment will allow for:
• Purposeful integration of core curriculum knowledge and skills• Authentic projects to be undertaken using a design thinking framework• The explicit building of capabilities such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, perseverance, resilience, communication and
collaboration
How Do I Become Part Of It?It is an expectation that students are already self-managing so that they will be able to cope with the integrated nature of the curriculum in this class. The learning environment will be suited to those students that like learning at their own pace and often have a real passion or strong area of interest. Students are invited to apply to be part of this class by completing the online application form.
For further information contact: Michelle Ballard - [email protected] - Phone 07 575 3096 Ext 823 or 021 558 752
This course challenges students to share their talents in drama, dance, music and singing in a class dedicated to performance. Students will work together to produce theatrical pieces. They will be trained in stage use, performative technique, direction, and production elements. In 2020 Mount Maunganui College will run a Year 9 Performing Arts option class of talented students in the areas of Drama, Dance, and Singing. Entrance is by way of an audition that will be held at the college in Term 4. Students are invited to apply to be part of this class by completing the online application form.
EACH CANDIDATE MUST COMPLETE AN AUDITION TO GAIN RIGHT OF ENTRY:
DRAMA: Perform a 2-3 minutes monologue from a play
DANCE: Perform a 2 minute dance piece in a genre of your own choosing, and provide backing music
SINGING: Perform a song of your choice, and provide a backing track
For further information contact: Wayne Flanagan - HOD Drama - [email protected] - Phone 021 173 7728
What Is Sports Performance? The Mount Maunganui College Institute of Sports Performance aims to build all-round successful people, not just successful athletes. This is evident by a high percentage of Senior Leadership positions being filled by Sports Performance students.
We will continue to develop our relationships with outside providers with either a Sports Science or Outdoor Education focus.
Over the two years the programme will cover:
• Goal Setting• Time Management• Physical Conditioning• Team Building (relating to others)• Specific Sports Development
• Personal Safety• Basic Functional Anatomy• Components of Fitness• Large Ball Skills• Well-being
• Methods of Training• Striking Skills• Invasion Games• Sexual Education• Self Management
How Do I Become Part Of It?Sports Performance teachers will visit contributing schools in Term 3 to speak to interested students. An online application form can be completed online by 31 October. Teachers will also speak to staff at the contributing schools to assist in talent identification of suitable students if need be. Students will be selected to visit the college to undertake a series of practical activities and testing. Following these processes, students will then be selected into the course.
Testing DayThe practical testing day will take place on Friday 1 November 2019. Students will be required to be at Mount Maunganui College gymnasium at 9am sharp. Students will complete a series of testing based on the various components of fitness. Students will then have lunch, and undergo a series of games and activities to test their game sense and awareness. Students must have a packed lunch, water bottle, footwear and appropriate clothing for testing. At the end of the testing the students can be collected from the Mount Maunganui College gymnasium at 2pm from the Macville car park end.
Behavioural ExpectationsMembership of the Sports Performance Institute is a privilege and carries responsibilities in training and performing within sporting codes as well as maintaining academic learning. Behaviour in and around school will have a bearing on continuation within the Sports Performance Institute. All students will be expected to behave with maturity and responsibility, display a positive attitude towards all aspects of their programme and towards school life in general. Performance, achievement and behaviour will be evaluated at the end of each year. This evaluation will be used to determine continued selection for the following year’s Institute programme.
Sports Performance FeePlease be aware the fee for this class is $200 which includes a camp, fieldtrips and a Sports Performance tee.
For further information contact: Erin Porteous - Email: [email protected] or Damon Haenga - Email: [email protected]
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a class, it is a register which allows us to identify, monitor and extend students on an individual basis. You can express an interest for your child to be on this register by completing an online profile on the college website under Admission.
Mount Maunganui Collge aims to meet the learning needs of students who have been identified as having the potential for outstanding achievement in areas such as:
• Academic Achievement eg mathematics, writing, languages, sciences, social sciences• Arts eg design• Technology eg computing, textiles, design, construction• Leadership eg tikanga Maori, community service.
Note: Students with exceptional ability in sports or performing arts will be assessed separately by the College.
We invite parents / caregivers who believe their child to be gifted or talented in any of the above areas, to register their child so that further information can be collated.
The College GATE Facilitator works with Year 8 teachers at our contributing schools to best identify gifted and talented students. A range of data will be collated for each student, including test results, parent and student questionnaires, samples of work, and teacher observation.
For further information contact: Dinah O’Meara - GATE Facilitator - [email protected] - Phone 07 575 3096 Ext 841

Mount Maunganui College is a Bring Your Own Device school.
We encourage all students to bring an appropriate device to support their learning.
Our preferred device of junior (Year 9 and 10) students is a Chromebook. Senior students may prefer a device that supports specific subject interests, but Chromebooks are more than appropriate for most senior subjects. Where subject specific technology is required the school supplies the device.
1. I understand that my cellphone is not an approved Bring Your Own Device.
2. Use of a device is a privilege not a right. If I abuse that privilege, I expect to lose it.
3. I understand that my parents could be held financially liable for any damage I cause to any school digital device. Any violation of the school’s policy will result in student discipline in accordance with the applicable Code of Conduct.
4. I will follow all teacher directions and established procedures when a device is being used. This includes carrying the device properly and not eating/drinking when using the device.
5. I will use the device for the purpose of education and for working on approved school assignments only.
6. I will not use any device unless permission is granted by the teacher. I will abide by all copyright laws when doing this for an educational project.
7. I will only use a school device if there are teachers present supervising me. I understand that unsupervised use is not permitted.
8. I will handle all devices with care and will not attempt to damage any software or hardware.
9. I will never give out my full name, my home address or telephone number, or my school name, address or telephone number, to anyone else online without my school’s permission.
10. I will not hide things that I am doing on the device (online or offline) from my teachers.
11. If I have a technical problem with the device, I will inform my teachers and ask for their help.
12. I understand that I am not responsible for what other people say and do on the Internet; therefore, if someone else online says or does something offensive or disturbing, or if I see images on a website that make me feel upset or disturbed in any way, I will tell my teacher. I will not respond to any messages that make me feel upset, angry or scared. I will not share the offensive or disturbing thing with other students.
13. I have read and agree to abide by the Mount Maunganui College Acceptable Internet Use Policy.
Digital Device / BYOD Agreement

School Touchstones
IdentityThe centre of Mount Maunganui College's touchstones is the identity of our students and community. Identity being how one thinks about themselves, the way they are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define them.
Mount Maunganui College recognises that in accepting one’s identity as important, students, staff and whānau have increased ability to recognise, understand, be happy with and have pride in their identity.
LearningMount Maunganui College is responsive and relational to the many identities that live in our community.
Teachers empower learners, to promote student-focused learning environments where students can lead, where student needs are paramount, and teachers are facilitating a relevant, meaningful, challenging and interactive context for learning.
Well-beingMount Maunganui College recognises the concept of well-being to be the physical, mental and emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of health. At Mount Maunganui College hauora comprises taha tinana (physical well-being), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being), taha whanau (social well-being), and taha wairua (spiritual well-being).
CharacterMount Maunganui College recognises that students, staff and whanau have a character shaped by their prior experiences and aspirations. Mount Maunganui College endeavours to support the building of character so that students, staff and whanau feel the positive aspects of their character are celebrated and that the learning environment of the school inspires us to grow our character.
Mount Maunganui College's Values
Aroha Kindness, Compassion and Empathy for Others
Mana Strength, Pride and Resilience
These values reflect both a personal (individual) and school (collective) cultural identity that we aspire to.
Internet access is available to students and teachers at Mount Maunganui College. The Internet offers vast and diverse resources to both students and staff. This service to teachers and students will help to promote educational excellence in our school by facilitating resource sharing, communication, and skills in finding and using information and innovative teaching programmes.
Students and staff have access to: 1. Electronic mail communication with people all over the world.2. Information and news from government sources, research institutions, and other sources.3. Public domain software and shareware of all types.
Access to computers and people all over the world also allows for the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of a school setting. On a global network it is impossible to control all materials, and an industrious user may discover controversial information. We (Mount Maunganui College) firmly believe that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweigh the possibility that users may access material that is not consistent with the learning outcomes of the curriculum. Life is a series of choices and consequences. Mount Maunganui College has chosen to make Internet resources available to students, and the consequence is that they will have access to enormous amounts of information. If a student chooses to use these resources for finding information that will be of assistance in learning, the consequence will be continued access to the Internet. If a student chooses to access resources that are objectionable, adult-oriented, or restricted, the consequence will be suspension or termination of access privileges. The signatures at the end of this document indicate each party who signed has read the terms and conditions and understands their significance.
1. Computer and Internet Terms and Conditions
1.1 Acceptable Use - The original purpose of the Internet was designed to support research and education in and among academic institutions all over the world by providing access to unique resources and the opportunity for collaborative work. The use of school computers must support education and research that is consistent with the learning outcomes of the curriculum. Use of another organisation’s network or computing resources must comply with the rules appropriate for that network. Transmission of any material in violation of any NZ regulation is prohibited. From time to time, Mount Maunganui College system administrators will make determinations on whether specific uses of the network are consistent with the acceptable use practice.
1. Mount Maunganui College specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through the Internet. Information (including text, graphics, video, etc.) from Internet sources used in student assignments and reports should be cited the same as references to printed materials. (See handout acknowledging your sources.)
2. Security - Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem on the Internet, you must notify the System Administrator or the Principal. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other users, or misrepresent other users on the network. Attempts to gain unauthorised access to system programs or computer equipment will result in cancellation of user privileges. Downloading of information must be first approved by the teacher in charge once students have been advised that this process is allowed. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to school computers.
3. Vandalism - Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges as well as other consequences. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm, modify, or destroy computer hardware, data of another user, Internet, or any of the other networks that are connected to the Internet backbone. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.
4. Inappropriate Use - Mount Maunganui College teachers and The Board of Trustees through the Principal will deem what is inappropriate use. The Principal may request the suspension or termination of computer use of any user who violates these acceptable use practices.
