ew Book Chronicles Growing up in

    Fleischmanns in the 50's & 60's

Marilyn Mayes Kaltenborn, daughter of long-time Fleisch-

manns Mayor Murray Mayes, has written a memoir about

growing up here in the 50's & 60's, titled  An Unconven-

tional Childhood . Skene Library hosted her in a reading

and slide show in September, and she also attended the

Fleischmanns History Day events on October 12. Copies

of her book are available at the Museum. (Contact Mu-seum Trustees Peggy Kearney or John Duda to arrange

pick-up, now that the Museum is closed for the season.)

    Fleischmanns Factoid

For much of the early 20th century, Fleischmanns was one of the

biggest resort towns in the Catskills. Year after year, the Ulster &

Delaware Rail Road guide books would list 50 or more establish-

ments where visitors could stay. It was also one of the best-known

resorts, so that even establishments that were NOT in the village

often claimed to be in Fleischmanns. This cards from the Grand

Hotel (up in Highmount) shows that. There is even a card from theBudapest Hotel (in Big Indian) showing the location as

    'Fleischmanns.'

Call for help in aftermath of

    Philippine Typhoon

Lynne Blish’s family in the Philippines

were badly affected by the recent typhoon.

The roof of their house blew off and sev-

eral family friends have perished. Lynne is

collecting clothing to send to their commu-

nity. Donations of clothing are welcome; please deliver donations to Lynne Blish on

    Kissimee Road.

    Museum Happenings

On September 20, the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories held

its annual Volunteer Appreciation lunch. It again took place at Mi Lu-

pita, and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Our terrific team of vol-

unteers helps to staff the Museum all summer long, and assists in our

never-ending cleaning and maintenance work. Our volunteers

    are invaluable.

    Howl…ween Parties a Success

On Saturday, October 26th over 50 children attended the 2nd  annual Howl…ween party. They were created by our friendly witch,

Dorothy, a dancing cow and other adults who had worked tirelessly to decorate the space donated by Mark Birman at 1053 Main

Street. In addition to decorating their own Halloween cupcakes, the children played games such as pin the spider on the web, spooky

drawing on the wall and watched classic Halloween movies. As the party came to an unwanted end, each child received a bag of

goodies to take home. A good time was had by all!

Later that evening, a belly dancer, a beatnik, a glamorous witch, a flapper, Miss Piggy and Kermit, a Pope and nun as well as many

other costumed adults, 70 in all, joined in at our Howl…ween fundraiser. The proceeds from the evening event covered the cost of

the children’s party which was free. Thank you to all the volunteers that made the two events so successful, to Mark Birman for gen-

erously providing the space, Freshtown, Dollar Store and La Cabana for donating food and to all who supported the events.

    Christmas Caroling on

    Main and Wagner

Join your neighbors for caroling on Decem-

ber 21st at 3 pm in the parking lot behind the

    and businesses on Main

    Street and Wagner Ave-

nue, all are invited to have hot chocolate andcookies in the Church dining room.

    The Fleischmanns Community Church Christmas

Eve Candlelight Service will be held at 6pm, and

all community members are enthusiastically in-

    vited to join us!

    Dressing Up Fleischmanns for the

    Holiday Season

Fleischmanns will be aglow this holiday sea-

    son! New snowflakes lights, replace-

ments for the wreathes that were

drowned by the flood, will be atop

    Village light poles shortly.

The newly painted Gazebo is to be decorated on Sunday,

November 30 th. All interested in helping with the holiday

decorations should meet at 10am at the Gazebo. Rob Al-verson has taken the lead again in this effort and

he will be happy for your help!

Our next issue of the Flyer will be published in

January. Fleischmanns First wants to wish you

and yours the best for the holidays! Happy Thanksgiving,

Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    Letter from Mayor Pascarella..

    Dear Fleischmanns Community,

The holiday season is upon us which means we are finally in the home stretch for the year2013, a historic year for Fleischmanns. The Village is officially 100 years old and I believe weare poised to flourish now once again in a way which could rival the glory days of a centuryago. We have come so far and I am very thankful for all of the community members and espe-cially to Fleischmanns First and its leadership for the hard work that goes into improving our

Village every day. In fact we have much to be thankful for these days and we should take thetime to reflect upon that especially this time of year. Veterans Day was recently celebrated andwe thank all those who have served in defense of our freedom. Thanksgiving is upon us andwe are thankful for the bounty from which we are fortunate to share. Hanukkah and Christmasare around the corner and we are thankful for each other and the good company of family andfriends with whom we celebrate. Then New Years comes and we get a fresh start at it all onceagain.

Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season,

    Sincerely,Todd Pascarella, Mayor
