Paris (COP21) agreement:
Limit global avg. temperature to well
below 2ºC above pre-industrial levels.
Pursuing efforts to limit the
temperature increase even further to
1.5ºC.
EU Goals:
2030: 40% CO2 compared to 1990
levels.
2050: 80-95% CO2 reduction.
Power sector decarbonized.
Regional cooperation is essential
Challenges: Support schemes | renewables goals | national focus

TenneT Offshore track record
By 2023 TenneT will have realised 14.400 MW (14,4 GW) of offshore connection capacity
(10.600 MW for offshore wind energy, 3.800 MW for interconnector)
• 12 grid connections for offshore
wind farms
• 9 DC and 3 AC connections
• 5.200 MW at present
• 7.132 MW in 2019
• NordLink: 1.400 MW (2020)
• 5 grid connections for offshore wind farms
• Only AC connections
• 3.500 MW in 2023
• NorNed (2008): 700 MW
• BritNed (2010): 1.000 MW
• COBRAcable (2019): 700 MW

Huge amounts of offshore wind COP21 agreements implies a radical change in electricity generation mix
for the North Seas countries
Assumptions study1
• Full decarbonisation of electricity production
• 50% reduction of the total energy demand by 2045 (relative to 2010)
• Electrification level of 45%
Outcome
• 230 GW offshore wind capacity
• 180 GW deployed in the North Sea
• 50 GW deployed in ‘other seas’ (Baltic, Irish and Atlantic)

North Sea infrastructure
Three main functions
• Connection of countries: price convergence
• Transmission of offshore wind energy
• Enhance system security and stability by allowing the
exchange of power
No consumption at sea
Impact of failures differs
• Cost of onshore failure 200 x cost of electricity not delivered
• Cost of offshore failure 1 x cost of electricity not delivered
