On The Cover: The first time a CSR has visited the North Coast and Brisbane (well, Bromelton!). Believed to be an attempt to increase the reliability of the lucrative East-West services, SCT is cascading the CSR class onto the Melbourne-Brisbane corridor and putting more SCT class loco’s onto the desert running. Wed.16/8/17 was the first trip, and here is CSR007/SCT015 on 3MB9, approaching Bulliac in the last rays of sun. Mark Bennett Previous Page Top: 1BS2 crosses Stony Ck Rd at Pembrooke with Ben Francis at the controls of NR82/8226 on Sun.13/8/17. Mark Bennett Previous Page Bottom: Approaching The Tin Bridge, where Reids Rd crosses the railway line between Pembrooke and Telegraph Point, 1WB3 steelie has nose ahead “Anna’s” in the form of NR66/NR98 on Mon.14/8/17. The ‘Tin Bridge’ has been a pre-fab concrete bridge for decades, but has remained ‘The Tin Bridge’ to the local Rollands Plains people. My nickname for the NR’s comes from one of my horses that is called Anna. My 4 year old son calls her ‘NR’! Mark Bennett Next Page: On the evening of Sun.13/8/17, 7MB9 catches the last patches of sun at Pembrooke behind SCT008/SCT001/SCT006. Mark Bennett

Above: 4621 cement train arrives at Wauchope on Sat.12/8/17. Here, they will drop off some Loaded NPRY’s into the Goods Siding, and pick up the Empties from the Stock Siding. Boral employees will later place the wagons for unloading with their Road/Rail shunt tractor, a job performed in the past by an X200. This train has seen many different loco’s over the years, but has once again settled into 81 and 82 class haulage, with the odd 48 for the Grafton shunter thrown into the mix. Mark Bennett

Editorial Issue 1. August 2017.

G’day, and welcome to the first Issue of North Coast Railway Round Up. This newsletter will be available as an emailed pdf file at the beginning of each month, covering the previous month of railway action on the NSW North Coast Railway. So, flick me your email address to [email protected] or 0404720076 and I will put you on the mailing list. I’m also asking for contributions, so if you have a sighting, a picture, new or old, or any kind of news related to the Standard Gauge line from Telarah to Brisbane, all contributions will be appreciated. I have been thinking about doing an emag for a while now, and have decided to concentrate just on my backyard, the North Coast. This newsletter would not be possible without the help of Dave Porter and Jarrod Mitton, and the members of their ‘NSW North Coast Trains, Telarah North and Beyond’ Facebook group, and Dave’s ‘Locomotives and Traffic NSW North Coast Division’ Messenger Room and the members of that group and also Barry Petersen. So, enjoy Issue 1, with all the action of August 2017, which saw the CSR class make their debut on the North Coast and Aurizon announce their intention to stop running on the corridor. Get those LDP pics while you can! If anyone has any suggestions, comments or contributions, feel free to let me know. Mark Bennett, Rollands Plains, Sept.2017.

North Coast News:

CSR’s Debut

Big news for the month was the debut of the CSR class on SCT’s Melbourne - Brisbane trains. 3MB9 on Wed.16/8/2017 was the first trip north, with CSR007/SCT015 powering the train. Since the January 2017 commencement of the Melbourne to Bromelton trains, SCT’s motive power has been stretched increasingly thinly between the new East Coast trains and the East-West corridor. With the CSR’s becoming increasingly less reliable on the desert running, it is understood that SCT would like to get the SCT class running to Perth on the more lucrative East-West services and cascade more CSR’s onto the MB/BM’s. It will interesting to see how the Chinese loco’s perform on the generally difficult North Coast work. On Wed.30/8/17, 3MB9 was worked by SCT011/CSR009. Taree Yard sees a train

Another interesting working occurred on Wed.16/8/17, when an ARTC rail delivery train worked by PN’s 8109/8167 actually used the rusty rails of the sadly under-utilised yard at Taree. 6M43 arrived from Mt George at 1304hrs, and detached an MT railset off the rear, before continuing north with 2 loaded railsets. After a few day dropping in various locations up to Loadstone, the MT railset from Taree was picked up on the return by 6M42 on Sun.20/8/17. Aurizon pulls the pin on Intermodal

On the 14th of August, Aurizon announced it’s intention to exit the intermodal market, with the plan to either sell or close the various parts of the intermodal division. The Queensland intermodal business will be sold to a consortium of Linfox and Pacific National, Acacia Ridge Terminal to Pacific National and the intermodal business outside of Queensland will be closed. The sales and closures are expected to be complete by December 2017. So get your LDP’s on the coast shots while you can. The expectation is that the LDP’s will be returned to EDI, however don’t be surprised to see them turn up soon after with SCT or perhaps another operator will try and enter the corridor. Either way, it will be a different scene by 2018.

The LDP’s have been synonymous with the North Coast since they were built in 2008/2009. LDP007 leads two of her sisters through Rossglen, on Sun.27/11/2011 with 7MB7.

Five Years Ago:

Above: 4621 has thrown up some interesting combo’s over the years, this one from 11 Aug 2012 was a classic, BL27 and 8050. For a few months in 2012, the north coast was again graced with the delightful sound of the 80’s again as they regularly worked 4621/6422 for a few months, then were gone again. Mark Bennett

Wagons on the Coast:

Above: One of the dangers of working a railset train, especially on a curvy line like the North Coast. If the tie down straps aren’t very tight, the bending of the wagons around curves can cause the rails to ‘walk’ off the ends of the railset. ARTC’s AZRL railset could do with a paint job soon, too! Mark Bennett
