As the year rolls along, your NCVMA has been busy tending to the needs of North Carolina veterinarians. There is ongoing planning for local district activities, developing and implementing a very affordable Practice Management Seminar, coordinating the summer conference and the North Carolina Veterinary Conference, monitoring bills as they pass through our state legislature and preparing the quarterly newsletters among a long
list of other duties. In an effort to highlight a member benefit in each of my presidential messages, I would like to review an often overlooked part of our state association with which many members may not be familiar. Each year, the NCVMA provides almost $65,000 in charitable contributions for members, NCSU‐CVM students, veterinary technician students and animal welfare outreach. These contributions receive occasional attention, but make a sizeable difference in the lives of those people and animals who are beneficiaries of our financial goodwill. The Friends of the NCVMA operates the charitable arm of the state association and provides financial support through a variety of programs. Each district representative in our eleven districts is encouraged to make an annual contribution of $750 to the non‐profit of their choice within their district ($8250 total). Recipients of these funds have been varied, but include rescue groups, animal shelters and many other worthy groups and organizations. Friends is also a generous supporter of many programs at NCSU‐CVM (ie: White Coat Ceremony, Cowabunga, Dog Day Run, Library, etc.) and sponsors two awards at the student awards banquet. Additional funds are awarded to groups such as the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, WAGS for Tags, last year. When the books closed for 2013, Friends contributed $14,700 in scholarships, grants and outreach. Not a penny of Friends contributions supports staff or overhead...all contributions support philanthropic endeavors within the mission of the Foundation. All of these things are made possible through your $10 Friends contribution. Incredible, right? The NCVMA funds two larger grants which are available to groups across the state regardless of their location. The High
5 Grant awards $5000 to each of five different groups each year who apply for funds for areas of need. Applications are reviewed and grants awarded based on pre‐defined criteria and the strength of the application. The Animal Welfare Grant is a one‐time grant of $2500 to assist community animal shelters with repairs, maintenance or other areas of need. Last year, the NCVMA awarded $39,400 to recipients of these two programs. The Helping Hands Fund is available exclusively to NCVMA members who have clients with hardship situations. Members can use the fund once each year and there are other criteria that must be met before funding will be approved. Last year, grants totaling $5500 were awarded to members who applied and qualified. We recognize the importance of supporting our students who are the future of our profession. The NCVMA has substantially endowed two scholarships at NCSU‐CVM. It funds two other awards totaling at least $2000, as well. Additional student initiatives and animal welfare initiatives received an additional $2250 in support. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our public relations firm who help advertise these opportunities and highlight veterinary activities and events around the state. MMI, a Cary‐based public relations company continually submits articles and photographs to news outlets throughout the state to make sure that the work that North Carolina veterinarians do is promoted to the public and that our contributions are recognized. These are just some of the many reasons that membership in your state association is critical to our success. The NCVMA promotes our profession in many ways that individual veterinarians cannot. Funds are responsibly directed to numerous budget items of which charitable contributions are a large part. Consider it your way to make a difference in ways that veterinarians should. Share this information with someone who may not be a member and encourage them to join you in helping make a difference!

Support the NCVMA‐PAC and Help Educate Legislators on the Veterinary Profession
The NCVMA’s Political Action Committee (NCVMA‐PAC) works proactively to educate candidates and public officials on public policy matters critical to the veterinary profession. The NCVMA is highly regarded at the State Capital. The NCVMA‐PAC is the tool by which our Association builds its strength in Raleigh and by which the NCVMA will continue to expand its visibility among elected officials.
The NCVMA‐PAC is independent of any political party or any specific candidate, and the PAC committee approves contributions regardless of that candidate’s or legislator’s party affiliation. The NCVMA‐PAC also has a strong “Veterinarian’s Day”, which allows members to personally interact with their legislators.
Membership dues are not used to support the NCVMA‐PAC, which is funded solely by member contributions. As you think about the tremendous services that NCVMA‐PAC regularly provides you, we hope that you will contribute.
