Unto the Populous of this “The Grand Barony of Atenveldt” doth

Baron Otto and Baronessa Lisabetta send warm greetings and well wishes.

Unto the Populous of this “The Grand Barony of Atenveldt” doth Baron Otto and Baronessa Lisabetta send warm greetings and well wishes.

As many of you may know we have lost our Wednesday night’s at Encanto Park. We have been given Thursday night, due to a soccer league taking Wednesday. We would like to Thank those of you that took the time to give us your opinions in this very difficult situation. The opinions were a split 50 /50 so at the Populace meeting on Monday July 6th we took a vote. As you can read in the minutes of the meeting the vote was to stay with Wednesday and move to Steele Indian School Park. Their Nextellencies, Ed and Annalies will need your support to make this a smooth transition to the new location.

We would like to thank all those that journeyed north with Baron Otto to Solar Seige in Tir Ysgithyr. It was a fun event!

We bid all those that Journey east to Pennsic a safe trip. Baron Otto will be attending Pennsic with his Ballista.

Please mark your calendar for September 12th, the Barony of Atenveldt will be celebrating its 40th year. What a milestone for the oldest Barony in the Knowne World. We hope you will join us in welcoming back our Founder and many others from our past at this lovely event. The final details for the site are currently being worked on so please look to the lists and next months Palm Prints for more information. Hope to see you there.

We wish to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all those members of the populace who have stepped up and filled an office or offered assistance at events. We truly are blessed to have a populace that is so generous with their time and resources. As the old saying goes “Many hands make light work” and, you, our populace, prove that every day.

So, if you have been thinking “What can I do for my Barony?”, in the next 6 months we will have three very important events for the Barony. The first one is Baronial Anniversary, Septem-ber 12th. The second is Baronial Champions on October 31 and finally Baronial Yule will be held on December 5th. All of these events can use a hand when planning and at the event. If you would like to assist please contact the autocrats as soon as they have been announced. We hope

Baron Baronessa

to see you at these three Baronial events and the other fine events coming up. Remember, help-ing out, if only for a few hours, increases everyone’s enjoyment of the event!

Attention all Fighters!! Our next Fall Novice Tournament will be held on September 10th. The list will open at 7:00 pm with fighting to commence at 7:30. Don’t forget your consort. There will be 2 lists… Her Excellency’s List with be held for individuals who have been fighting 2 years or less and His Excellency’s List for individuals who are non Chivalry and have been fighting 2 years or more. Fighters are encouraged to use whichever weapon’s form they feel most competent and may in any round choose a different weapon’s form. Please bring your pageantry and consort and join us for this fun tournament. Depending on how many show up will depend on tournament format. The lists are open to ALL fighters of the fine Kingdom of Atenveldt, please help support this. There will be prizes awarded for the winner in each list as well as a prize for best field presence (appearance, manners, etc) in each list (to be decided by the Baron/Baroness) We are eagerly looking forward to a Grande Tournament with many dis-plays of Heraldry and encourage all members to compete! !

From the Seneschal

I was asked to post to this group and failed to do so in a timely manner. I apologize. At the most recent Baronial Meeting, there was much discussion. As it stands, Their Excellencies and the Baronial Officers have determined via polling and said discus-sion that the Barony's practice shall remain on Wednesday nights throughout the fall season. This means that we will not be using Encanto Park for the fall. I have asked the Cen-tral Division coordinator to let me know if the Wednesday League changes their mind and opens the day back up at Encanto. This is unlikely, but we wanted to cover all bases. Alternative plans must be made, and the Indian Steele Park location has many bene-fits. Parking, location, bathrooms and level ground are all good. Lighting is the only question and this summer is again proving that SCA members are very resourceful. We have several members producing experimental lighting that is portable and bat-tery-run. Initial cost estimates are the same or less than paying for a season of park provided lights. These members have not yet requested any Baronial Funding for their project. If a successful design appears, it is likely that it will be freely shared. Other sites have not been completely ruled out, and new ideas are coming up every week. The spring season will bring a new opportunity to negotiate for lighted park space (at Encanto or elsewhere) if we choose to. I would like to remind everyone that this is not a "new" stance from the parks depart-ment. True, it has been in place less than 5 years, but has been the system for the past several. The order of preference is clear - City Sponsored Programs, Children's Leagues, Adult Leagues, Other Groups. We are an Other Group. (see page 2 of appli-cation forms http://phoenix.gov/TEAMSPRT/fldap209.pdf) Regards, Rhys ap Trahaearn Seneschal, Barony of Atenveldt

Palm Prints 11 August 2009

I'm by nature solitary, scarred by spear and wounded by sword, weary of battle. I frequently see the face of war, and fight hateful enemies; yet I hold no hope of help being brought to me in the battle, before I'm eventually done to death. In the stronghold of the city sharp-edged swords, skillfully forged in the flame by smiths bite deeply into me. I can but await a more fearsome encounter; it is not for me to discover in the city any of those doctors who heal grievous wounds with roots and herbs. The scars from sword wounds gape wider and wider death blows are dealt me by day and by night.

Please submit them via Microsoft Word files, or in the body of an email to: [email protected] . Authors of existing articles in the KWH are invited to refresh, renew, and update their prior KWH articles. This is a new section that will highlight common phrases and their origins. If you would like to contribute please email the Chronicler at [email protected] “Beg, borrow, or steal” - The general meaning of this phrase is to obtain something by any mean possible. This phrase can be found as far back as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales: “Maugre thyn heed, thou most for indigence or stele, or begge, or borwe thy despence!” There are also a few more recent references to this phrase.

IMPORTANT change to THIS Years Kingdom A&S Competition!!!

Greetings to All Parents and Children of the Kingdom Of Atenveldt, With much discussion with TRM and many others of this Kingdom, the Children A&S Competition portion for the upcoming Kingdom A&S Competition is now back in place. It is very Important for this to continue and succeed that all involved from the entries from the Children, to the parents, to those who will be judging this part of the competition to work together in doing what all participating in Kingdom A&S Competition should be, and that is full of encouragement and fun. Please read all rules and any changes pertaining to the Children's A&S Competition portion including the already set Pre-Registration deadline of Children's entries (that is the same of all entries-OCT 3rd) this will make everything be the best it can be. I wish all to please encourage an artisan being adult, youth or Children to enter at the up coming Kingdom A&S Competition. Always in Service, Lord Raven Mayne KMoAS
