By Yoo Ha-na / The Argus 2002 Busan Asiad together with NK T he Non-Activist Student Solidarity (NASS) meeting was held on Wednesday, September 25th at the College of Social Sciences. About 6 to 8 people were on hand to hear Ong Il-hwan (E-97), the head of the HUFS Non-Activist Student Solidarity Steering Committee, gives information about the solidarity and answer questions. Ong claimed, “The Student Council (SC) has been losing its support from the students and is being neglected.” One of the reasons why the popularity of the SC has declined over the past several years was its lack of communication with the rest of the student body, stated Ong. “The SC must listen to the diverse ideas on campus and serve as the representative on behalf of all students at HUFS.” He added, “Unfortunately, it has failed to establish a clear form of communication with its students and became isolated from the mass.” The SC has placed blame on the students for their lack of cooperation and interest rather than making appropriate changes and reforms on the system of student political activism itself. According to Ong, “The SC has made all the non-participants look like individualistic and selfish students by criticizing them rather than learning to accept diverse ideas and attitudes of the students. But NASS will change all that for the better.” One of the reasons why the HUFS SC has recently failed to push forward with the plan of normalizing trustee and lowering tuition was the lack of interest and support shown by the students. “The main cause behind the decrease of support by the students was the growing isolation between the SC and the student body, which has increased over the years due to the lack of proper and regular mutual communication,” claimed Ong. There are several objectives, which NASS must achieve in order to gain support and interest of the students. First, it must establish a place where public opinions can be shared and exchanged such as discussion and debate rooms, and act as the arbiter. “NASS must remain impartial to all sides of argument and make sure that all people are fully and equally represented no matter how different their backgrounds and ideas are,” claimed Ong. One of the things that make NASS so appealing to the students is that it shapes its policy based on their opinions and ideas rather than introducing one and making them adapt to it. “NASS represents liberal democracy, where everyone can participate as a whole in shaping a policy,” said Ong. Ong also manages a website for NASS called MAGNUS HUFS, which is a place of information and discussion for all students interested in learning about non-activism and NASS. Ong said, “It’s important for the students to use what’s available on the web.” A student had posted a message on the homepage saying, “Although the current trend of Korean universities indicate that non-activism is gaining support, there are many unsolved questions.” He said, “It seems that NASS is promising many idealistic things, but how will they be carried out? Is there any specific plan out there to enforce all these good ideas?” By Park Ji-yeon / The Argus T hree months have already passed since two middle-school girls, Shim Mi-sun and Shin Hyo- soon, got run over and killed by a U.S. armored vehicle. Since then, citizens, students and people from all levels of society have been held regular and continuous rallies to protest against the death of two girls. So far they have been gathering at Youido and Uijeongbu. Oct. 29th marked the seventh struggle in Uijeongbu in front of the U.S. military base. The majority of the participants were from Hanchongryon. Hundreds of polices prevent the rally by surrounding the students because there was something uneasy about the atmosphere that hung over. The chant of “Yankee go home” blared heavily over the U.S. military base. The gathered mass shouted together that the U.S. army concealed the truth of assaulting and even killing Korean civilians and were determined to stay in Korea despite everything. Moreover, they pointed out the Korean government’s inability and the unfair regulations of SOFA concerning the current situation. They warned that the same thing will happen again with other innocent civilians if the Korean government neglects the case of murdered girls. Another victim of a similar crime, Park Seung-joo was killed on September 14th when a U.S. trailer crashed into his car. He was found killed on the spot. It was for that reason that the mother of the victim attended the rally. Her grief and sorrow of losing her son appealed to the crowd at the rally, who sympathized with her agony. She said the police must make a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident again and find the truth. To enlighten and teach the case of the death of two girls, Hanchongryon showed many propaganda. They distributed notices to the students that included the details of the U.S. atrocity and conducted a campaign to collect signatures. In addition, the exhibition of gruesome pictures taken on the scene of the accident of Mi-sun and Hyo-soon was held. The photos showed the bleeding and crushed bodies of the two girls run over by the vehicle. HUFSan Song Festival stands with University and Gangbyon Song Festival as one of Korea’s top song festivals. What started in 1980 as HUFSan Song Festival was an event exclusively for the HUFSans, FHSF has become even greater in scale accepting people from all universities starting in 1989. In 1995, it was the first festival at college level to do a live multimedia broadcasting via the multi-vision. In 2001, musical genres other than jazz, folk, hardcore, hip- hop, ballad, and metal were introduced for the first time. By hosting musicians of various backgrounds, FHSF has proved itself to be a festival of great magnitude. “FHSF accepts all songs and lyrics that contain the thoughts and feelings of university students as long as they are not commercial,” said Yoo Hyun-woo, the head director of Foreign Studies Broadcasting em (FBS). Since the first WFF in HUFS began 5 years ago, the WFF has served as the cultural ambassador to HUFSans by introducing international movies that aren’t widely known in Korea. On the first day, the main program started with the opening film, India’s “Muthu” which combined a wide variety of genres: romance, thrill, action, betrayal, anger and so forth. Also, there were some interesting programs that took place. One was the piano concert on the second day of the festival. The pianist was the Korean new-age artist YIRUMA. On the third day of festival, Yoo Ji- na, the director of Screen Quota Union, discussed the issues of screen quota in Korean movie industry, and the government’s policy concerning Korean movies. Throughout the festival, two or three main films were shown in small theather everyday. However, several films from the previous festival were shown again. The number of students who participated in this sixth WFF is not much, though WFF gave the HUFSans an opportunity to approach other culture. On the other hand, some students in the library complained that they suffered from the noise outside through out the festival. http://maincc.hufs.ac.kr/~theargus OPINION

T he Japan-North Korea summit meeting was held in Pyeongyang a few days ago.The realization of the summit meeting is enough to attract the public attention.

Actually bilateral relations between Tokyo and Pyeongyang in the meantime had beenin a tight box as the South and North were in the past. Such facts, of course, wereunfavorable to our government. But the rough relationship has begun to look gettingbetter due to the visit to the North by Japan’s Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi.

When two countries feel the necessity for an improvement of their relationship, thissummit meeting was accomplished. Restoring the North’s relations with Japan was animportant issue in some aspects from the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. One is tosucceed in the remedy of the management of domestic economy. Unless the steps don’tfail, because of a shortage of materials and tremendous inflation like the Soviet Unionand Eastern Europe, it is necessary to cooperate with the developed countries includingJapan. Another is to improve relations with the U.S. It is interpreted that PresidentBush’s negative view for North Korea makes Chairman Kim send out a love call to theU.S. The public estimate that Pyeongyang declaration signed by Mr. Kim is none otherthan a dialogue proposal toward the U.S. also lets us surmise the North’s friendlyattitude.

Mr. Koizumi also visited Pyeongyang with his own tasks. The current issue Japaninsisted on solving first was the kidnapping case of Japanese. He had to obtain goodresult at the problem on suspicion of the kidnapping Japanese so that his visit to theNorth will receive a successful evaluation. In addition, he had a duty to convey to KimJong-il the U.S. worries on weapons of mass destruction. Consequently, the summitmeeting seems to play a large role in scratching two countries’ itchy spots. The NorthKorea admitted the kidnapping case, which they have denied consistently for a longtime, and even officially made an apology. And they expressed repeatedly that theywere ready to talk with the U.S. Also Japan professed deep apology for its past colonialrule on the peninsula, which the North had required as a precondition of normalizationof the diplomatic relations.

But they have only taken a step towards the Northeast Asia’s peace. Prime MinisterJunichiro Koizumi has to put a boiling Japanese people to sleep to form a friendlyrelationship with the North. Now they are indignant at several people’s death abductedby North Korean spies. Kim Dae-jung’s government must also pay attention to theissue. Because it is said that the government has taken a lukewarm attitude to the issueof the Koreans kidnapped to the North Korea. Also immediate reopening of the North-U.S. dialogue is not yet to be known. It is reported that the Bush administration willobserve the North reducing weapons of mass destruction and accepting a specialInternational Atomic Energy Agency inspection of its nuclear facilities.

Anyway the summit meeting is important enough to change the security surroundingsof the Northeast Asia. Our government welcomed the accomplishment of the meetingunder the judgment that it would contribute to peace and stability on the KoreanPeninsula. They think that the improvement of the relations between the two countrieswill have an affirmative effect on exchange and cooperation works between the Northand South by helping resuscitation of the North’s economy. For all that, Kim’sgovernment should not only look on with folded arms. It is obvious that Japan’s voicefor the Korean Peninsula will be also loud as the relations improve. That is, thegovernment ought to lead Mr. Koizumi and his cabinet to discuss prior consultation withour government on all contacts with the North. The North Korean authorities shouldalso keep in mind not to get genuine reliance of international society until they arecautious lest heroism of an intelligence agency haunt again.

awaken from daydream

Editorial

I t was undesirable but not surprising thattwo nominees for prime minister were

rejected by the National Assembly. Unlike inthe past, we now have parliamentaryconfirmation hearings for prime ministernominees. The nation has watched theirqualifications for prime minister positionthrough the hearings process.

The questions Chang Sang, President KimDae-jung’s appointment for prim minister, faced in the National Assembly’s approvalhad been almost about her moral charactersuch issues as the forfeiting of Koreancitizenship of her eldest son, the unjustprocess of amassment of her assets, and thefalse statement of her academic background. In two days of confirmation hearings, primeminister designate Chang Sang never clearedup the suspicions concerned with hermorality.

She tried to shift the responsibility for theissues of her son’s citizenship, assets, andeducation on to the Ministry of Justice, andher mother-in-law and secretary, respectively. The hearings showed usconsiderable problems in her ethics and law-abiding spirit. Despite the high expectationsfor the country’s first female prime minister, the National Assembly voted againstconfirming Chang Sang for the position. Therejection produced serious doubts about theway of prior examination of people who are

asked to assume government positions.Chang Dae-whan, President Kim’s

another appointment for prime minister, alsosuffered from the suspicions raleted to hisassets, education, and business. The firstsuspicion was concerned with questions of

whether there were wrongdoings in theprocess of amassing his assets and ofreceiving a loan of 3.8 billion won from abank. The second was related to his illegalchange of address for his children andunordinary process of receiving a Ph.D. fromNew York University. Finally, peoplewondered about his special relationship withcurrent Korean government in managing anews media company as the president. Thetwo days of confirmation hearings for ChangDae-whan exposed his shortcomings, andthe National Assembly voted against

confirming him as a prime minister even ifsome people thought he would beacceptable. When he was introduced as aprime minister designate, we expected hisdynamic leadership with managerial skillsand reform minds. However, he failed to

pass the confirmation process. The secondrejection produced a question of how manyleaders in our society would be able to passthe confirmation hearings under the currentstandards for prime minister position.

President Kim Dae-jung nominated KimSuk-soo, head of the national government’sethics commission, as his third primeminister designate in two months. Kim Suk-soo is preparing a two-day confirmationhearing under the guidance of 13-memberspecial parliamentary committee.

How can we evaluate current

parliamentary confirmation hearings? ChangSang and Chang Dae-whan had complaintsabout being treated as people like criminals. It is true that there are some limitations in theway of conducting the hearings.

However, many people think the hearingsshould be extended to other cabinet membersand officialdom. The parliamentaryconfirmation hearings are very meaningful inthat the process provides clear and strictethical standards for the average leaders inour society with the two-faced nature.

From now on, people who have suspiciousacademic and military service records, andaccumulate wealth in unjust ways cannot andshould not seek public office. Now, I amwondering whether you can have a clearconscience to the following questions: Didyou finish your military service obligation injust ways? Don’t you have any troubles inyour and your children’s citizenship? If youdon’t have any problems in answering to thequestions, you have good qualifications forour public office in ethical standards.Unfortunately, it is difficult to find peoplewho pass the ethical standards among oursociety leaders.

O nly few years ago, most peoplesupposed that an interpreter is a guide

for foreigners. However, there is Choi Jung-wha, a professor of Graduate School ofInterpretation and Translation in HUFS,who had changed this prejudice. Due to hereffort and fame as an interpreter, now manypeople notice that an interpreter is aprofessional job that specializes ininterpretation for international issues andconferences.

From 1980, she started to work as aninterpreter over 1,500 internationalconferences on political, economic, scientific, technological and cultural issuesetc. Recently, she also was elected as adirector of Asia-Pacific part ofAIIC(Association of Internationale desInterpretes de Conference). There are 2,500members in AIIC and only 8 members areKorean. Therefore, her assignment itself isfully meaningful. She’s found a quitecomfortable niche for herself at the top ofAIIC. What makes her have these honors?

She heard French for the first time in theelevator on her way to her sister’s officewhen she was a middle school student. Shesaid, “It was the most beautiful language thatI’ve ever heard.” Finally, she decided tolearn this attractive language some day. As aresult, she chose French as a Second ForeignLanguage in high school and majored inFrench at university.

Prof. Choi had been studying French withall her might. Her passion for learningFrench grew much bigger when she studiedabroad, at Paris University III in France- forPh.D. in Interpretation and Translation. However, unfortunately, she encountered alot of difficulty in France at first. Shesupposed that there was no big difference inFrench ability between native students andherself. She was full of pride in her Frenchability. In contrast, there was a big differencebetween native speaker and herself. From

then, she started to study French very hard. Her daily schedule went on hard working. She woke up before dawn to study Frenchand went to bed late. She read English andFrench newspaper a lot, listened to the radioand watched TV everyday. Once she evenhad a nightmare about the coming exam. Shefound her daily life rather monotonous suchas going and returning only between schooland home. The only exercise she had washer finger exercise for writing.Consequently, she gained weight a lot. Shedescribed herself as a “Little pig”. She madea rule to study 15 hours a day and usuallyexhausted from overwork. However, thefruits of her hard work were as sweet as weexpected. These blood-and-tears endeavorsgave her a success as an interpreter.

She commented about her job as follows;an interpretation is not only putting languageinto the words of another language bytalking but also re-creation work. Sheexplained this as follows: First of all,

interpreters have to understand the meaningand context of a speech communicatedduring the conference, and then they cantranslate the meaning of the language. Therefore, interpreters have to prepare inadvance to make a script on his or her ownbefore he/she appears on the stage forinterpretation. She insisted on having animble mind’ as an interpreter’s essentialability to those who want to be an interpreter. That’s why an interpretation is like livebroadcasting. For example, interpreters haveto prepare unexpected situations which couldpossibly happen all the time. The ability tohandle a difficult situation effectively isregarded as a wit. Therefore, it is required tohave both nimbleness and wit to be a goodinterpreter. Besides, “Intellectual curiosity”is another key of being an interpreter. Sheadded that interpreters have to have interestsand basic understanding about all kinds offields because of the fact that an interpreter isa person who enables experts to

communicate with each other on theirsubjects. That is, an interpreter mustperfectly understand technical terms relatedto the conference in advance of theconference. In addition, Prof.

Now, she works as an interpreter ininternational conference such asASEM(ASIA-EUROPE MEETING). Hermost impressive conference is the ASEM,where the summits of 25 countriesparticipate. There are 3 interpreters for eachlanguage in ASEM conference. The reasonshe chooses ASEM is the pride of being partof history. She said she could read thecurrent times by living as an interpreter. Inother words, she faces with upcomingphenomena through the internationalconferences.

For instance, the days she were busy withmany conferences were the time ofbeginning of Korea’s economic growth. Forthis reason, she described interpreter as avery attractive job because she has to studyupcoming phenomena and current problemsin terms of job.

The recent research shows over 80% ofthe students who major in foreign languageswant to go to graduate schools majoring ininterpretation and translation. That means acareer as a interpreter is favored by manypeople and interpretation business is verypromising. Korea is now leading theinterpreting field in Asia. Yet, Prof. Choiasked us that we should not stop here. It isrequired that government have to set up aproper organization more and more to keepthe leading role of interpretation andtranslation in Asia. She ended the interviewby giving a word to students who aim tohave a career as an interpreter. “You need tobe qualified. Don’t stop studying.”

A s a student of the German Department,I would like to request the school

administration for more art classes. Before Ientered HUFS, I hoped that there would bemany art classes, but to my disappointment, there weren’t enough of them.

Great scholars and artists don’t getmotivated solely from their fields of study. For example, Einstein was a great biologist, and religious scholar Paul Marshall was ageologist, and the pianist, Yuki Kuramoto, iscurrently a doctor in physics. Many of theclassical philosophers were at the same timegreat musicians and physicians as well asscientists and artists.

Therefore, it is reasonable to say thatpeople, who have succeeded in one field, gottheir motivation from other fields as well.

In other words, art classes in high schoolserve as more than just easy classes to boost

up grades, but as a means of providingmotivation for the students.

When students learn about other culturesthrough music and art, it would be easier forthem to learn foreign languages as well.

Because our school is a liberal artsuniversity, it is obvious to see that most ofour classes focus on the fields of literatureand foreign language.

However other fields can help us in ourstudies. It is sad to see that our school hasrelatively less subjects and classes dealingwith arts and sciences when compared toother universities. I hope HUFS could takecharge of at least in the subjects of arts andsciences.

School authorities should openmore art classes

M any students in HUFS study morethan 1 language or the various

cultures and societies. Many of them studyforeign languages for their majors and ofcourse to know the ropes of a nation’scultures and social systems, mastering itslanguage is necessary.

Although there are some differences uponthe departments, usually the languagedepartments have curriculums which arecomposed of composition, grammar, reading, speaking etc. as fundamental stepsto be fluent in a certain language. Butprobably most of the students feel theshortage of the professors. I mean “theprofessors”, not “the instructors”. Forexample in the Department of Spanish, thereare some 10 professors. If we consider howmany students are there in the department(about 800 students in Imun and Wangsan),the ratio of one professor to students is 1:80.In my opinion, with more than 20 students in

a conversation class, it is hard to expect theoutcome of quality. Of course it isunderstandable that in the condition ofHUFS’ shortage of places (like lecture roomor something), those problems seeminevitable. Because to lower the ratio of aprofessor to students, more lecture rooms areneeded. But once the authorities concernedhas decided to give the admissions to asmany students the university can accept andif the authorities concerned thought thatHUFS can give good quality of education toevery single students who attend now, theyshould feel the responsibility.

In conclusion, now the expansion ofequipments and more professor are neededto meet the original purpose of theestablishment of HUFS.

Need More Professors?

M any big businesses nowadays preferselecting people with at least some

work experiences. This is very different fromthe past where people were recruited mainlyby their educational background and collegerecords. If an applicant is visibly competentand is fully capable of surviving in aworking environment, he or she is more thanlikely to be recruited. However, even thougha person is exceptionally talented experienceis something that can’t be taught throughtraining. Although most big companies suchas Samsung, LG have adopted trainingprograms for their new employees, theseprograms are no substitutes for theexperience one can acquire from real-life.Almost all employers regard experiencehighly in their selection of the newemployees, and its important that the jobseekers understand this fact.

Small businesses are what the namesuggests: Small. It’s plain and simple. Thesecompanies favor team players more thananything else. One can’t deny the fact thatthis holds true for all the other companiesregardless of their size, class, and location. However, in companies of minute scale, working together towards a common goaland cooperating in a unified manner areindispensable. This is where the term, “teamplayer” comes into action. All smallbusinesses, regardless of the established dateor size, place agreat deal of trust anddependence on their employees; likewise, each employee has more individualresponsibility than would be for a largecompany. That is the reason why smallbusinesses these days favor “team players”rather than “single players,” who are talentedin their own rights, but not as cooperative.

So what do the start-up companies look forin their applicants? The key word is“creativity.” Most of these companies seekpeople with innovative ideas and thoughtsrather than plain hard work and dedication. They believe that “individualistic people” arethe ones who would bring changes and maketheir compamies more competitive. In orderto select these “competent people,” manystart-ups are investing their money and timeon the recruiting procedure. They havegotten rid of the traditional interviews andmade some cranges on them in order to findout and fully evaluate the applicants’humanity, activeness, thinking, wit, andother talents in a comfortable atmosphere. While creativity and innovativeness areemphasized, all employees must be efficientteam players. The idea of working towards acommon goal is stressed heavily in start-ups.

Many people tend to favor foreigncompanies in times of economic depression. This is because most of these companies putemphasis on individual talents rather thanone’s educational backgrounds. Manypeople with work experiences apply forforeign companies because their skills arehighly valued. Most college graduates preferforeign companies to Korean companiesbecause of better working conditions andwages. However, if one expects to work fora foreign company, the person’s languageskills must be competent enough so thathe/she won’t have any troublecommunicating with the rest of theemployees. People can leave a goodimpression on their communicative skillsthrough a thoroughly and carefully writtenresume. All applicants must clearly state themotive of their applying in their resumes.

T his year has been very special in thatthe reporter got a chance to get closer

to Korean culture and its relics.Gochangeupsung is a well-known fortressamong people because natural stonesurrounds it, which is uncommon. Afestival of Gochang, Moyangsungje, will beheld from October 12 to 17 this year. It wassaid that this event had been developed intoa party with other traditional events such astreading of fortress, award ceremony ofDongri prize, and national children’spansori contest.

This is the only province that has kept itsnatural custom and legend. The legendrelated to Gochang fortress says that awoman can heal her leg disease if shemakes a round of the fortress once with thestone on her head. She can live healthier ifshe becomes successful in her secondround, and she can even go to paradise ifshe goes around it three times. Where thislegend came from, and who made this isabsolutely unknown, but here, one cannotoverlook the wisdom of the old generation. As women trod the fortress, which hadbeen frozen during the winter, theycontribute to reinforcing the fortress.

Gochang is also popular for the Koreanclassical music called pansori, and thepansori museum displaying its exhibition,

which makes thetown much moreunique.

Chung Hoi-suk,a pansori vocalist, says that now is theright time to geteducated on ournative culture andto pass it on to others in style. With theunique quality of pansori, it is graduallygaining attention, especially among learnersand foreigners. There are even foreignerswho have been taking lectures on Koreanclassical music including pansori. However, one pansori soloist mentionedthat youngsters don’t have the patience tolisten to Korean folk music.

Hopefully, the education department ofKorea can find more practical ways ofteaching students in no time. To be morespecific, they should visit historical sitesinstead of memorizing facts or numericalvalues to truly understand them. In short,Koreans should learn to appreciate theirown, and this does not mean they must stayaway from the culture of America or Japan.

I t is said that the 1980’s is the times ofturbulence. Especially, there were

demonstrations throughout the nation in1984, because of President Chun Doo-hwan’s first state visit to Japan. Why wouldthey be against a national policy? Of course,President Chun made economic profit andlistened to the regret-the Korean-Japanesehistory of the past of Emperor Hirohito. Theaid fund will go toward Chun’s stay inpower.

But Japan resent the Korea’s fixation withthe past. What is worse, a recent attempt to

ease the longstanding tensions came from anaid fund to their thinking. HUFS studentsand other university students in the 1980’swere enraged with a humiliating Korean-Japanese relationship. So they were againstPresident Chun’s official visit to Japan. Sowe searched for the then current opinion onAug. 1984 in the first page news of theHUFS The Argus.

On Sept. 4th about 200 HUFSansdemonstrated on the campus againstPresident Chun’s official visit to Japanscheduled from Sept. 6th through 8th. The

students attempted to march into street, butthey failed because the police blocked in.The police fired tear gas and arrested some20 students.

On the other hand, on Yongin Campusabout 150 students also demonstrated onSept. 5th against the President’s state visit toJapan. About 60 students from ImunCampus and about 100 Yongin HUFSanstogether claimed that the President’s visit toJapan would be a grave diplomaticsubmission.

The students tried to go out into street, but

they could not succeed because of thepowerful interception by both professors andthe police.

Some of the students also demonstrated atSeong-nam, a satellite city of Seoul, demanding that the interference of the policeshould be abolished from campuses. But sixstudents or so were arrested by the police.

Learning wisdom from the past

What do various businesses look for in their applicants?

Each company focuses ondifferent points

W hen an adjutant of Cho-cho, whois the leader of Wui dynasty

(one of the kingdom in the era of ThreeKingdoms of China), visited the Cho-cho’s barrack for asking a tomorrowplan in midnight, Cho-cho just said“Chicken ribs” and evaded making hiscomment on it. As you know, “Chickenribs” means something that one hesitatesto give up even though it is of littleinterest.

What can be compared to “chickenribs” in HUFS? Maybe, it is the collegeof science and engineering. Somebodyasked, “Is there a college of science andengineering in Hankuk University ofForeign Studies?” “Why does a collegeof science and engineering exist inthere?” What is worse, you, a memberof HUFS, think once at least that it isunnecessary forus to operate acollege of scienceand engineering.

Why did theadministrationestablish a collegeof science andengineering? Inearly 1980, manyu n i v e r s i t i e sstruggled toextend theirstructure forattracting morestudents andfunds. Our schoolalso foundedseveral collegesincluding science and engineering inWangsan campus. Although the schoolstructure became larger than what it wasbefore, the policy was still poor incontents.

The college of Science andEngineering needs continuousinvestment in research facilities. But,there is not enough research facilities inlaboratories. Base research instrumentswere very old and were frequently out oforder. The administrator said that it isdifficult for us to purchase sufficientexperiments because they could buyfacilities within the limit of budgetaryappropriation. In addition to that, there isinsufficient research funds to the scienceand engineering professors. Therefore,

they have problems concentrating intheir studies.

The administrator did not also try toinform high school students that HUFShas science and engineering colleges.Although we advertised ourselves as“Unique and Best”, our school wassilent on the existence of the science andengineering colleges. It is doubtful thathow many people including high schoolstudents know science and engineeringdepartments in HUFS.

Other universities were carrying outresearches on new technologies andinformed their science and engineeringdepartments through the joint researchwith the enterprise institute. Recently, our school has built the EstablishmentTraining Center(ETC) in Wangsancampus but it is a pie in the sky. ETC

was not operatedefficiently andmost studentshave not theslightest idea ofthe ETC function.

According tothe EducationMinistry survey, many high schoolstudents arereluctant to makean appliance foradmission toscience ande n g i n e e r i n gdepartments. Ifthe administrationwould not make a

master plan of the HUFS institutecollege, science and engineeringdepartments would certainly fall into adecline. Also, senior students of highschools would not choose HUFS.

The administration should apply“Unique and Best” concept to theinstitute college. If we have not anysolutions for upgrading the quality of theinstitute college, the science andengineering college is only “ChickenRibs”.

Big Business Small Business Start-up Business Foreign Business

Many graduates of HUFS find themselveslooking for jobs in the business field in oneof the previously mentioned four categories:Large, small, start-up, and foreign.

Businesses in each one of these categorieshave their own individual requirements andmethods of screening their applicants. Forexample, large businesses tend to look forpeople with experience although it’s onlyone of many things they consider in theirselection. Applicants must be qualified andcompetent enough to meet all the demandsof the company they are applying for.

In order to do so, they must research thecompany they wish to apply for and developspecific strategies. It is never too early forthe students to start collecting informationfor the companies that they’re interested inapplying for. The sooner the students learnabout what they want to do after graduatingfrom HUFS, the more time they’ll have todevelop and improve their skills for the realworld.

Students must make the most out of theirstay at HUFS in developing themselves for

the future. Since HUFS specializes in thestudy of foreign languages, it isrecommended that all students learn at leastone foreign language besides English.

Although English is currently the mostimportant of all foreign languages, investingtime and effort on another language coulddefinitely serve as a plus when one islooking to apply for a foreign company orany company for that matter. HUFSencourages all students to take at least oneforeign language besides English. Themajority of students at HUFS usually starttaking courses in their junior year to fill therequirements for their minors.

Many students tend to minor in anotherlanguage besides the one they’re majoringin. Therefore, HUFS is widely known for itsmulti-lingual graduates. Likewise, studentswho are non-language majors should doublemajor or minor in foreign languages. Bydoing so, they could develop their businessand technical knowledge as well as thelanguage skills they need to survive in theever-competitive world. Language skills

mixed with professionalism are what thecompanies generally look for in anapplicant.

According to the head of the employmentoffice, Yoon Sung-mook, students mustutilize the resources provided by the schoolwhen looking for jobs and start it as early aspossible. “Many students start looking forjobs in their junior and senior year.

It’s important that they find what they likeas start as early as possible perhaps in theirfirst or second year in college. They shouldmake the best of what HUFS provides forthem.”

He also said that all students areencouraged to use the resources at theemployment office as well as the Internet tofind information they need. “There was asenior who didn’t know where theemployment office was,” said Yoon in ashocked manner. “Obviously that persondidn’t utilize the resources provided by theschool nor did he have any interest infinding information.” Yoon also said thatthe school administration should hold

seminars and meetings to increase theawareness of the students regardingemployment.

“I would say that studying here at HUFSserves as a great benefit to any studentseeking a job in foreign companies as wellas various other companies,” said Yoon. Headded that, “When compared to otheruniversities, HUFS provides an exceptionaleducational environment for students, whowant to experience foreign culture andlanguage.

There are foreign professors foundeverywhere on the campus and that itselfallows the students to develop internationalsenses.” “HUFS is the gateway to the worldand the students should realize the fact. They should try to get as much out of theirstay at HUFS. I can’t emphasize thisenough.”

D id you see “The World Is Not Enough,” the movie known as “007 Unlimited” inKorea? It is the nineteenth installment of the world-famous Bond serials. The

breath-taking movie went to the top at the box office in the States and also made a bigheat in Korea. As usual, our super-hero James Bond, always with amount of dazzling,eye-opening gadgets and the hell of ladies so-called Bond women, didn’t let us down. The synopsis runs as follows: The world has become face to face with shortage of oil-supply. And a typical vicious terrorist has hatched a plot to make the energy his own. Ofcourse, the American hero beat off the top dog bad guy, bringing the World to peace. The movie looks not far apart from reality. Human race is going to be on the verge of oilcrisis; then, the high price natural resource will cause a lot of troubles and wars.Actually the conflicts have already begun.

As we know, the 41st president of U.S. went to war against Iraq on 1991. And now,his son is trying to make war on Iraq again. It is rare that both the father and the sonbecome presidents; however, it would be more unusual that the two of them waged waragainst the same country. What made the older Bush set off the war? What is egging theyounger Bush on to the fight with Iraq?

Eleven years ago, when Iraqi president Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, thepresident George H. Bush, who was in the oil industry in Texas, didn’t miss this goodopportunity. The Federal Government has announced that the reason it attacked Iraqwas to prevent additional aggression. Vowing to free Kuwait, he rallied the UnitedNations, the U.S. people and Congress and sent American troops. After weeks of air andmissile bombardment, the 10-hour land battle dubbed Desert Storm routed Iraq’smillion-man army. US-led UN coalition forces expelled the Saddam Hussein fromKuwait. Thanks to the battle, which yields great demand of war supplies, the munitionsindustry in U.S. had great years. But what U.S really wanted was basically oil control. From this point of view, the war didn’t end in victory for the Whitehouse; because theHussein government, who isn’t obedient to Washington, is in the saddle, blockingagainst the Washington’s attempt to control oil.

War clouds are hanging over the world. The 43rd president of the United States,George W. Bush, is preparing for Gulf War 2. The Administration says: “Iraq is hidingweapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles. The dictator, Saddam isdangerous now and will grow only more dangerous as he builds his arsenal of gases andpoisons and searches for a nuclear weapons.” Also, 64% of Americans supported U.S.military action to oust Saddam Hussein. But this time, he cannot bring around theoutside of the world; because the government has no sufficient evidence that Iraq hassuch weapons. Most of world leaders are decrying Bush’s war plans.

Defying the opinions, the Bush government, which wants to control oil, is makingpreparations for attacking the Middle East country. Korean government announced thatthere had been no consolations between America and South Korea about the Iraq issue. But according to Washington, it expects Seoul’s support in case a war breaks out. Seoulfaces a dilemma between its own interests and the alliance with Washington. It is veryimportant for us to keep a good relationship with the U.S.; however, we should bear inmind that the unjust war, which Americans are preparing for their benefits, will scarificea great many innocent people.

THE EYES OF THE ARGUS

H an Do-hee who is a sophomore atAjou University is surprised from time

to time while surfing the Internet. The reasonis that no sooner had he connected to theInternet website than full screen CF suddenlyappeared. He doesn’t want to see it but thereis no way to close the CF screen. It wasmade so that it couldn’t be gotten rid of. Hedoesn’t have any other choice but to see itfor about 30 seconds. He said, “It’s veryannoying. I think many people would agreewith me. Is there any way to avoid it? I hateit!”

Many people are aware that Internet adsare increasing. A couple of matters are risingrelated with them same as other media likeTV, newspaper. It comes to be a kind ofpollution, rather than just ads.

Internet advertisement is spreadingvery quickly in various ways

There are many types of Internet ads. Firstof all, banner commercial is one of thecommonest ways of advertisement. You cansee it on almost all Internet websites you’vevisited. Moving banner ads have justappeared recently. Pop-up ads are commonas well. Another one is the video clip CF.When your computer mouth cursor is on it,CF is played automatically as if you arewatching TV. You can also see it onordinary Internet sites. In particular, whenyou use ‘Video On Demand(VOD) service’,you have to watch some commercials beforewatching programs. Initial screen of theInternet is changed forcely by some Internetsites that you connected before.

Internet advertisements resulting insome problems

Advertisement is an important method ofletting companies give information to others. Therefore, it is natural that companiespromote themselves by using Internetadvertisements. On the other hand, it causesseveral problems.

They invade sovereign power of thenetizens. Although netizens don’t want tosee them, ads are forced on them againsttheir will. Sometimes, computers are brokendown due to them. Jang Yeon-shim whoworks for a small venture company said,“When I turned on my computer monitor, the initial screen was changed to a strangeInternet site. I tried to get back to the originalstate, but the computer was suddenly out oforder. In the end, I had to reformat thecomputer.”

There are many false and exaggeratedcommercials, and a lot of people areswindled by them. An anonymous consumerhad posted a message on the bulletin boardof Korea Consumer ProtectionBoard(KCPB) that said “I bought a mobilephone after seeing a commercial. It says thatif you watch our ad 53 times everyday, wewill give you about 40,000 won each monthas an assistant installment. They didn’t keeptheir word. I didn’t get any money fromthem.” Nearly 10 messages like that are

being posted on the bulletin board of KCPBeveryday. Netizens are suffering fromeconomic damages like above.

There are no special regulations tocontrol Internet ads.

The various advertisements are out ofcontrol due to the absence of law related toInternet ads. It allows the advertisements toflow uncontrollably bacause there is norestriction.

On the other hand, other medias have theirown rules for ads. For example, there issome restriction law for TV. According tothe rule, each broadcasting station can’tbroadcast ads for over 10~15 percent of thetotal broadcasting time. It is a measure tosupplementary the characteristic of one-sidedmedia. In case of newspapers, itsadvertisement is managed by the laws on theregistration of periodical publications. KoreaAdvertising Review Board(KARB) inspectson paper’s ads and if there are some matters,KARB asks for correction.

There are even some rules for mobilephone, one of the most popularcommunication media like Internet. Spammessages sent by cell phones were a socialproblem. For this reason, the code ofInformation and Communication Network isabout to be revised to oblige the senders toindicate the ‘advertisement’ and theirtelephone number. If somebody breaks therule, they are fined up to 10 billion wonmaximum. Ministry of Information andCommunication(MIC) is negociationg withthe cellular phone manufacturing companieson offering filtering service : if a subscriberwho doesn’t want to get spam messagesapplies for it, the messages in specificnumbers are eliminated. It is expected to becarried out in October if possible.

As previously stated, the realistic solutionis to make laws on Internet ads as soon aspossible. For instance, banner ads, mostcommon advertising style on Internet, needto be set a standard such as the ‘maximumsize’, ‘how much room will be permitted forads on the screen?’ and so on. Regulationson false and exaggerated Internetcommercials must be made for sure becauseit is easy to get tricked by anonymous peopleand get swindled.

It is necessary that netizens keep theirheads up. They have acted passively. Manypeople overlook ads due to “it’s annoying.”Many TV viewers take part in themonitoring of the ads giving their opinions.Park Joon-woo, an official of Citizen’sAction Network, said, “Internet ads areposted after reaching an agreement betweentheir businessmen and webmasters of theInternet Websites. It is a little difficult tocontrol for this reason. Thus, netizen shouldactively take actions.

A sian students, wishing to study inthe States, come face-to-face

with some difficulties. They have to gothrough more complicated formalitiesto take GRE (Graduate RecordExaminations), one of the importantgraduate school entrance tests.

Recently, UCLA (University ofCalifornia) and UPENN (University ofPennsylvania) found that some Chinesestudents have handed in the fakescores; the unjust actions broughtdiscredit on Asian students. In the end, last month, ETS (Educational TestingService), a GRE agency, announcedthat the test would be changed fromcomputer-based GRE to paper-basedGRE from this October only in Asia. Moreover, students are permitted totake GRE only two times a year fromthis October. “Asian students havehigher scores than their ability,” saidStanford University, makingcomplaints to ETS early this year. Theagency looked over 40 countries beforecoming to a conclusion that someKoreans and Chinese cheat on theexam to make the changes.

The shift of the testing system inGRE, which is prerequisite for Koreanswishing to study in North America, comes as a big burden. Says ParkYoung-ki, a university student,24: “It istoo embarrassing. I planned to go to theStates next year. I can take the test justone more time. It would be hard to geta good grade. I need more chances.”

CBT GRE was introduced onOctober 1998 to much acclaims. It waspossible for students to take the examwhenever they wanted.

Also, it became more difficult forstudents to be granted the visa. Afterthe Sept. 11. Attack, the U.S. visa andentry requirements were tightened. KimYoung-jun, a university student, 23says, “I planned to take a trip to theU.S. this winter vacation, but it washard to get an entry visa. So I wound upto Australia.”

O n September 6th, National ElectionCommission (NEC) made official

announcement on prohibition of “getting-together” like alumni association, clanmeeting and native gathering during 16thPresidential Election Campaign. Manyvoters were confused by the announcementand strongly opposed to it.

The decision of NEC is based on the lawof official election and transparency act.Among the items of the law, thecontroversial part is Clause 1 of Article 103covers prevention on illegal official election. It says, “While election campaign is goingon, no alumni association, clan meeting and nativegathering can be held inthe election district. Ifsomeone violates theregulation, the person willbe sentenced to maximumthree years ofimprisonment or will befined maximum sixmillion won.” With the16th General Electionahead, the regulation wassuggested by NEC for thefirst time to root up thebackground connectionsuch as regionalism, alumni affinity and bloodrelationship. Then, theNational Assemblypassed the bill unanimously on February16th in 2000. What do you think about thatdecision?

The Argus took an opinion poll to collectthe thoughts from HUFSans for 3 days fromSeptember 14th to 16th. In total, 160students participated in this survey.According to the result, cons-HUFSans arepredominant over pros-HUFSans. Among160 participants, 115 students (71.9%) votedagainst it and another 45 students (28.1%)voted for it.

HUFSans on the pros side insist that it isnecessary to make the clean election culture, which is the object the decision pursues. They emphasize that whenever election

season comes around, many illegalcampaigns have been repeated so far. Therefore, pros also lay stress on, it isneeded to acknowledge the realistic situationand have to reform it. An anonymous studentsaid that some candidate have made moneyand gift passed under the table through themeetings. In the result, the studentmentioned, the meetings provide the placeand the chance of unlawful electioncampaign. Also, they say this time can’t bean exception. The regulation has beenapplied to 4· 13 National AssemblyElections in 2000, 6·13 Simultaneous

Elections and 8·8 reelection and by-electionin 2002 since it was established. Althoughthere will be many kinds of meetings at theend of the year, it is unfair to allow the caseof exception.

Cons-HUFSans insist that it is an invasionagainst the constitutional right such asfreedom of assembly and expression, right topursue happiness. Lee Seung-hoon, a seniorof department of Spanish, said, “ I don’tknow why this kind of way has selectedfrom all the other better occasions.Especially, my parents and other seniors aredissatisfied with the decision. They areusually busy and hardly meet their friends inthe ordinary day. The year-end is unique

chance to meet the people each other. As aresult, the decision takes away the goodopportunity to meet their friends.” YoonHye-jung, a sophomore of department ofPortuguese, showed her view, “Even thoughthere are a lot of gatherings having norelation with the campaign, NEC prohibitsevery private meetings. I can agree with thepurpose of the decision, but it went to far.”They are also cynical about the decisionowing to vague definition on the meetings tobe controlled. The NEC prescribed thatevery formal meetings which are previouslynotified people of the details such as date,

place and attendingpersons will berestricted. Jang Jin-woo(Department ofEconomics 97) said, “Ithink that it is demandedto prepare the moredetailed criteria likeattendance ofcandidate’s relatives, budget and purpose ofthe meeting. Thoseparticulars are possibleto drive the meetings tothe wrong way.”Besides, they aredoubtful of reaping thedesired fruits. Actually,NEC has found out 76illegal cases throughout

4·13 National Assembly Elections in 2000,6·13 Simultaneous Elections in this year.Among them, only 2 cases were charged bythe prosecution.

As the controversy has amplified, NECannounced the changed policy on September18th. They decided to prohibit the meetingsconnected with the presidential electiononly.” Though the controversy has settled atthe first stage, it seems that the regulation hasto be revised.

T he voting day is just a holiday?”University presses come out to

change misunderstandings on politics andraise the participation rate of the universitystudent voters.

On September 13th, press conference forthe establishment of the United Movementof Campus Journalists for PoliticalCampaign(UMCJPC), which consists of 4main university media groups, NationalAssociation of Campus EnglishPress(NACEP), Joint Association of CampusPress(JACP), National Association ofCampus Press(NACP), Alliance ofBroadcasters in Incheon and Gyeonggi-do(ABIG), was held at Cafe Neutinamulocated in Anguk-dong. Each press inuniversity with its characteristies broughtinto one for the first time.

Kim Young-shik(chairman of NACEP),Kim Dong-il(president of JACP), Jin Hyeon-cheol(chairman of NACP), Kim Nyeon-gyeong(vice-president of ABIG) attended atthe conference. They declared to lead anactive movement for raising political

concerns of the students. The voting rate ofthe twenties was 66.4%, otherwise those ofthe fifties was 89.9%. It reflects indifferenceof university students on politics.

They will offer right information related tothe 16th Presidential Election through thejoint-article and joint-advertisement usingnewspaper and broadcasting. Furthermore, they are planning to hold a presidentialcandidates forum, too. The campaign isexpected to be a good opportunity to vitalizedepressed university press. They are going tokeep its activity to improve universitystudents’ distrust on politics and to makethem participate in politics even after thepresidential election.

In spite of the expectation, specific activityisn’t planned yet. Press has a specialty whichis very sensitive to the political campaign. For this reason, it seems that its activity isrestricted. It is doubtful that the universitypress, which is being neglected by thestudents, would achieve expected results.

C yborg (cybernetic organism) appears inthe movie “Ghost in the Shell”. The

hero Motoko Kusanagi’s body is almostcompletely robotised and only a part of herbrain remains from her original body. Shehas the cyborg body of a 20 year old girl ,buther actual age is estimated at about 30. Iscyborg really able to appear in actual life like“Ghost in the Shell” then? It actually can.Cyborg’s member was inserted the verichipunder the skin in the fleshy part of theirupper arm. This happened on May 10, 2002.The chip is useful in an emergency becauseit enables doctors to establish quickly apatient identity, his telephone number andhis case history. An eleven years old girlnamed Duval has a microchip inserted to herbody for an emergency like kinapping.Wherever she is, the microchip shows herexact position on the computer through radiowaves.

Then what is cyborg? In short, cyborg is ahuman who has certain physiologicalprocesses aided or controlled by mechanicalor electronic devices. The cyborg dose notonly include a human having a mechanicalheart, a mechanical bone, an artificial eye, anartificial arm but a human wearing glasses, alens or a wig. Most artificial instruments fallinto category of cyborg with the exception ofnatural organs of the body. Therefore thereare great many cyborgs all over the world.

Cyborg’s original conception was meantto be replace the body with the artificialorgans so that people may survive severecircumstances such as the outer space or thesea. But today cyborg is used to providepeople with artificial organs in case lost apart of their body owing to disease oraccident these days.

How is cyborg-related research going onworld wide? The study of cyborg is still inelementary stage. However, recently theresults of study proving the infinitepossibility of cyborg has been made publicall over the world. A blind person get his eyeto see thanks to the techonology by Dobelle

Institute(a professional organization thatmakes artificial eye) in New York CityJanuary 18, 2000. The Dobelle Institute put apair of sunglasses for him connecting adigital video camera, computer, andassociated electronics to the visual cortex ofhis brain. By replacing a sub-miniaturetelevision camera with a special electronicinterface, the patient is able to learn how to“watch” television, use a computer, and gainaccess to the Internet. Studies are also underway to control symptoms of hands tremblingfor patients Parkinson’s disease. The mainpurpose of this study is to restore the body toits former condition by giving to the brain

electric signal from prosthesis of the heart. Inaddition to this ,there is a computer calledWearComp, which changes into a cyborg, when the patient puts it on. By means of thetransplanted the chip in the brain, peoplemay communicate with each other is worthyof notice. In other words, people cancommunite from brain to brain without theuse of language.

Cyborg also includes people who prolongtheir span of life by changing their old and illorgans such as the heart, the liver and thelungs to fresh the artificial parts. Howevereternal youth has both advantages anddisadvantages. The merit is that it eliminatesthe fear of death. The demerit is that theeternal youth can not feel the value of time.Because the finite of time endow humanwith value of world and individuality.

Some scholars prophesied that there wouldbe post-human age that cyborgs may becomethe master of the earth in the future. Otherscholars say that humans must becomecyborgs to combat the domination ofmachines. Actually, as days go by, humanbecome more and more dependent onmachine . However it depend on us whetheror not we ought to develop artificial cyborgs.

T here is no end in studying. Dohol KimYong-ok proved this fact in Korean

society. As a Korean educator orphilosopher, he is earning fame among thepeople nowadays.

Who is Dohol ? How made Dohol the audience wild with

enthusiasm through his intellectual Show?Dohol began to give a lecture ‘Noja and the21st century’ through EBS program in 1999.The lecture focused on giving the newviewpoint about 21st century byreinterpreting Noja. Contrary to otherconfucian thoughts pursued utopia byartificial order, Noja’s thought makes peoplerecover their humanity by returning tonature.

Dohol is the one who mentioned about thehigh-quality culture in mass media. Dohol’slecture was renewed with increasingacrimony between people and finally createda sensation. Therefore, he attracted lots ofattentions from people.

Today, he broadcasts a lecture“Encounters of the India” through EBSprogram. The main purpose of the lecture isto introduce Buddhism easily to people. Atthis lecture, he says reconciliation betweenthe religion and new function of theBuddhism.

What does Dohol stand for ? Those who interested in Kim Yong-ok

inquire about Dohol’s meaning. Dohol is apen name of Kim Yong-ok. His pen nameoriginally meant log, the title of mangja’sbook, which implicated infinite possibilities. In contrast, Dohol himself stated that Doholmeant stupid person because he was called“stone” in his early days as his nickname. This fact shows that Dohol is the man whohas sufficient humility to acknowledge hisown imperfection.

There is no man with various careers likeDohol in the entire domestic scholar. Dohol

was born on June 14, 1948 in Cheonan ofChung Chongnam-do Province. After hegraduated from Bo-sung high school, hemajored in philosophy at Korea Universityin 1972. Dohol studied philosophy in world-famous universities such as Harvard andTaiwan University. He was an associateprofessor of philosophy department at KoreaUniversity from 1982 to 1986. Interestingly,Dohol was a professor in diverse academicsubjects: oriental medicine, philosophy andplay. Dohol changed from the professor tothe herb doctor when he quit teaching afterthe declaration of conscience. In a word,Dohol is called a professor, an educator andan herb doctor.

What kinds of books did Doholpublish?

Dohol published all sorts of books. Thefirst book which he wrote is “what’s thewoman?” Unlike the superficial title, thebook discussed an outlook on the world ofthe Orientals through femininity. It is one of

the largest record editions among Dohol’sbooks. A book titled “what should theOriental studies do?” is also popular withmany people. This book says methodologyregarding scientific approach of Chinesecomposition. In addition to publishingbooks, Dohol participated in severalorganizations. Dohol run the privateacademy called Dohol-seowon, whichsucceed to classic seo-won of Chosundynasty. Participants in Dohol’s academycould receive Dohol’s lecture and othererudite scholars lecture. Dohol-seowon is theplace that passionate people in learningcould hear the lecture and study regardless oftheir general knowledge. Humanity researchdisappeared in University education. In thecircumstance, Dohol’s academy made thehuman knowledge’s position secure.

Furthermore, there is the medical institutefounded by Dohol in 1996. The patients canrealize the method to improve people’sphysical constitution at medical institute. The place intends to develop therapy

concerning people curing their own illnessfor themselves.

His image in the societySome scholars criticize Dohol with slight

knowledge because he did not study Nojasteadily. However, his various knowledgemakes him approach between Eastern andWestern ideas. Importantly, Dohol made theaudience have easy access to philosophythrough an actual proof. The dispute onestimation about Dohol is still processing.Dohol has always been a target of criticism.Someone says his philosophy went wrong, though he popularizes the philosophy. Doholexplains his philosophy as follows; hedoesn’t secularize the philosophy butphilosophize the mundane world. Dohol sayshis ultimate purpose is to humanize thephilosophy.

Moreover, Dohol states that there isn’tsuch meaning that his philosophy doesn’tbelieve in religion. His thought is based onfollowed facts: philosophy should not forcepeople to believe a religion, and the religionitself should pass through people’s self-examination. So he insists philosophy is thecourse of everything. Some scholars criticizeDohol severely because his analysis aboutclassics isn’t exactly correct.

In addition, his speech to denouncespecific religion or its originator raised aproblem because that could make factionbetween social classes. But others extolDohol because he used modern expressionsabout tedious and hard contents. He madethe masses to have interest in the classics.Dohol created a boom in the humanity fieldbecause of the fact that people want topursuit practical learning. Above all, in thecircumstance of ignoring morality, Doholmade a deep impression on people’s mindabout ethic consciousness of human.

W ithout any doubt, the most famous book ofSpanish literature is Don Quixote, the

masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes and up to now, 5Nobel Prizes for literature have been awarded toSpanish writers and another 5 of them to LatinAmerican writers.

The masterpiece of Nobel Prize for literaturewinners are usually well known in Korea becauseKoreans think that reading these books is an essentialstep to becoming intellectual person and they regardthe books as classical works. Gabriel GarciaMarquez’s “A Hundred years of Solitude” (Cien Anosen Soledad) is a good example of this; after winning

the prize, the book became a key to getting the broad picture of Latin American literature. Camilo Jose Cela’s “The Family of Pascual Duarte” (La Familia de Pasual Duarte, first

published in 1942) was named as the second best novel after Don Quixote. Although he isone of the most important novelist in the twentieth century, his novels are not well knownin Korea. However, unlike Korea, many European countries have recently started toanalyze his works since January of this year, when he passed away in Spain.

“The Family of Pasual Duarte” is a model literary work of “tremendismo” or “brutalrealism”, which describes terrific and brutal episodes of the Spanish Civil War. The novelhighlights by showing only the dark part of the existence, which probably explains whythe novel is not popular among the Korean readers.

The tremendismo of this novel reaches its climax when the hero Pascual Duarte murdershis own mother. Having said that, the elements of its brutal realism are astonishing andfearful, and they are described deeply in the novel. However, the examples are threateningbecause they are realistic and dealing with taboos of human society. For example, the hero,Pascual Duarte is a kind of mentally distorted person and kills his neighbor friend aftergetting into a fight while intoxicated. Other examples are the scene that shows themurdering of his wife’s boyfriend Paco, and the killing of his mother, who becomes thematchmaker of her daughter-in-law. Later his father also dies in misery.

The most wretched part of “The Family of Pascual Duarte” is how Pascual Duarte’sbrother is expressed pitifully. His brother, whose name is Mario, had an accident when hewas four years old. His one ear was eaten by a pig and Pascual Duarte bullies his ownbrother frequently. Lamentably, the poor brother later sank down in an oil jar. Notsurprisingly enough, scary examples, which are mentioned above fill the entire novel.

Camilo Jose Cela, a Galician-born writer, only mentions the dark side of the Spanishsociety when both the light and the dark side exist. The novel prize winner does not useany indirect literary style but only uses direct style with exaggerated violence and cruelty. For example, he wrote that “a train with thirty two compartments ran through a youngboy’s head and the head was crushed,” and even this is a purified form of languagedescription.

Tremendismo novels were probably the most convenient way of describing the postwarera of Spain which was full of poverty, violence, and stupidity.

W hat would be people’s firstimpression of music? Without any

doubt, music has been man’s bestcompanion. However, not many peoplerealize that music is investigated verydeeply and academically. Especially, anacademy called “The Institute of WorldMusic” has carried out this functionnotably well since 1996, when theinstitute was founded in Deagu.

The institute has carried out itsinvestigations on 5 main parts:international music, regional music, popular music, actual music and mostimportantly, Korean music. This is prettyunusual because music institutes ofteninvestigate one area of music rather thanseveral. In other words, it is morecommon that music institutes focus onone part of music and not combine otherstudies such as sociology and history.

This explains that why “The Institute ofWorld Music” is valuable. The institutecollects unknown data of international andnational music and the members of theinstitute investigate music with sociologyand history. Its major aims are to studythese kinds of music more deeply andpublish magazines in order to help theordinary people understand them better.

It may sound biased but the members ofthe institute insist that music has beenmisunderstood by the mass media in thatthey provided false information for thepeople.

They published a magazine called“Music and Culture,” which included lotsof information and views of what themembers of the institute called “The NewMusic” were contained. Basically, theyexplained the gap of study betweenoriental music and occidental music, which is notably deep; therefore, “Musicand Culture” wants to become a bridgethat connects both fields of study. Inaddition, many specialists are stillresearching the occidental music and they

sometimes investigate oriental music aswell as occidental. Of course, this causes abig problem, and another function of themagazine is to correct incorrect ways. They published their 6th edition of themagazine in March of 2002. As the leaderof the institute said, doing this kind ofactivity is very hard but fortunately morepeople are helping them as economicallyand psychologically.

The future plan of the institute is tosupervise “Concert with Explanations”and music lectures as well as seminars. These are for the common people andthey all have a high probability of helpingpeople to get closer to music.

The activities of “The Institute of WorldMusic” have got to be more formalizedbut according to their achievements it iscertainly a model institute and will domuch more work than what it has done upuntil now.

O n September 9 on the lunar calendar, women stepped on the wall to avoid

the future disaster and offered a prayer forgood luck in Gochangeupsung (Gochangcastle), Jeollabuk-do. It is said that life couldbe prolonged by walking around the wallwhile carrying rocks above one’s head. Thiswas considered an important custom inKorea. The castle was built during the reignof the first of King Danjong (1453) up tothat of King Sukjong. However, it played acrucial role in defending the Honam areatogether with the Najujingwan and IpamMountain Fortress.

Moyangseong is another name for this, since Gochang had been called Moyangburiin the Baekje Period. The wall, establishedby piling up stones, was constructed so wellthat most of its wall remains in relativelygood condition. With a dense grove ofbamboo tress enhancing its elegance, therewere 22 buildings including theadministrative office, guesthouses, fourfountains, and two ponds, but some of themwere destroyed by fire. Fortunately, manywere restored to their original state by 1976.As of now, standing amidst the fortresstoday, there are about 10 buildings such asPunghwaru, Gongbukru, Deungyangru,Seonghwangsa, Jakcheong, Nae-a,Hyangcheong, Seocheong, Jangcheong, anda government office.

The fortress was built in extraordinarydesign that shows prudence of our ancestors. Its architects thought that preventingcollapse is the best policy to provide betterefficiency, which is very true.

One is likely to hear of pansori whilegoing into the Gochangeupsung Fortress. This is from the Dongri Korean ClassicalMusic Hall built in memory of Sin Jae-hyo

who compiled Korean classical songs.Pansori is a kind of chant in which onesinger tells a story accompanied by music(sori), lyrics (aniri), and gestures(Neoreumsae) to the beat of a drum. Thedrummer helps with the exclamatory wordslike “Great!” or “All right”. Its origin is notknown; however, it is presumed that pansorieither came into being before Sukjong, ordates back to the Silla Period whenpannoleum was performed.

Sin’s old house located at the entrance tothe fortress was designated as a culturaltreasure NO. 39 on January 23, 1979. SinJae-hyo, also known as a famous scholar ofKorean literature, unified a motley ofdramatic songs that has been used in thesystem up to now, and created the system insix categories; that is, Chunhyangga,Simcheongga, Baktaryeong, Garujigitarye-ong, Tokkitaryeong and Jeokbyeokga. Moresurprisingly, he made a distinguishedcontribution to the pansori to dramatizeKorean classical operas -Chunhyangga,Baktaryeong, Tokkitaryeong and Simcheon-gjeon.

The lyrics in pansori express one’spersonal ups and downs of many people in asomewhat liberal style. Although this is aunique genre of Korean Classical Music, itssignificance is completely forgotten amongthe new generation. For ardent admirers ofWestern music, it is recommendable to visitSin Jae-hyo’s old house and the PansoriMuseum in Gochang to have moreopportunities to become familiar withKorean music. Situated close toGochangeupsung, this museum has beenopen to the public since June 2001. Lots ofcultural activities are held in front of thecastle. Gochang is rather called the “Center

of Pansori” because of the museum anddongri classical music hall.

The museum has an exhibition hall, amorgue, a study room, and a hall of honor. To get there, one can catch the express buswhich makes 19 rounds a day, and themuseum is 500m from Gochang Crosscountry-bus terminal. One can contact themuseum by phone (063)560-2761, and theDongri Institute is at 063)560-2541. TheInstitute offers various activities to thepublic, including Pansori perfomances, contests, and classes.

The prestigious Dongri Awarding goes topeople who devote their life to Koreantraditional music during the Moyang fortressfestival, and this award makes the festival

much more interesting and meaningful. It will be a worthwhile experience to join

in the various pansori activities in DongriInstitute especially if one wants go handdown pansori to one’s offspring. Inaddition, in an age marked by highlysophisticated modern inventions and highstandards of living, walking along the top ofthe fortress while listening to pansori wouldbe a priceless experience for those of us whohave forgotten our cultural legacy.

T he sea goat (Capricornus) occupies thetenth slot of in the western Zodiac. It

has an inverted triangular figure. The seagoat stays in the equatorial region of theSouthern Hemisphere near Aquarius andSagittarius. It looks like a monster with thehead, forefoot and trunk of a goat and thetail of a fish. It changed its figure when Pan(the god of woods) was attacked by Typhon(a monster with 100 heads, thrown by Zeusinto Tartarus) and fled into the water. However, Pan was so impatient and made awrong incantation.

How then can you find the sea goat in thesky? First, you must link the herdsman (thestar Altair in the constellation Aquila) to awoman weaver (the star Vega in theconstellation Lyra). Secondly, you mustsearch the place which is the same distancelinking the Altair to the Vega to the south. Then you will discover the star Algedi inthe sea goat which is located on westernedge of the inverted triangle. If youconfirms the Algedi, you would look fordifferent star of the sea goat.

The Neptune was discovered near the starDabih in the constellation sea goat in 1846.Galle discovered the Neptune because hethought that disturbance of the movementof Uranus is due to the gravitational pull of

the Neptune. The planet occupies 8th fromthe sun. It has a sidereal period ofrevolution around the sun of 164.8 years ata mean distance of 4.5 billion kilometers.

The parallel of latitude 23° 27′south ofthe equator is called the Tropic ofCapricorn, because it was once the point ofwinter solstice in the sea goat. Of course, the point of winter solstice has moved stepby step in the west and now it stays in theArcher, owing to precession of theequinoxes(a slow gyration of the earth’saxis around the pole of the eclipse, causedmainly by the gravitational pull of the sun, moon, and other planets on the earth’sequatorial bulge).

The sea goat has the test-star of theeyesight. The star Algedi in the sea goat is adouble star. Therefore, one would pass thetest if one have divided two stars in adouble star. This test was derived fromancient Rome. Long ago, this method wasused to the eyesight test of soldiers. Ofcourse, today nobody could divide a doublestar because of pollution and lights.

Do you know where you can see the seagoat? Generally, it is hard to seeconstellations in the center of a city inautumn because there are no bright stars insky. So this reporter recommends theastronomical observatory on Mt. Jungmiwhich is in Yangpyong, Kyonggi Province. At that place, one can observe about 3,000stars. Besides, the people going to theastronomical observatory are visiblenebulas, star clusters and Saturn’s ringsthrough an astronomical telescope.

W ithout any doubt, Spanish languageis one of the most widely spoken

languages in the world and its importance isstill growing.

About 35 million people speak Spanishas their mother tongue and 1 million peoplespeak it as foreign language.

A famous English newpaper, “TheGuardian”, reported last year that thenumber of IGCSE(International GeneralCertificate of Secondary Education)Spanish as Foreign Language takers isnotably increasing.

In addition, more people are learningSpanish in the United States and manyinternational schools have replaced Frenchwith Spanish.

However, Spanish is not that well knownin Korea and its popularity is still very low. When people say Spanish, it is really“castellano” which is the original languageof Castilla, a central region of SpainPeninsula.

Also, Spanish language is known as“Seo-ban-a-uh” and “the language ofEspana”. All these names stand for thesame language but many people are confusethese terms and think that they are differentlanguages.

For this reason, FLEX Spanish has animportant role of creating the right image ofthe language and giving opportunity forpeople to become familiar with thelanguage.

Up until now, many foreign languageschool students have taken Junior FLEXSpanish. There are lots of high schools thatoffer English, French, German, Chinese andJapanese and the number of schools thatoffer Spanish are also increasing. Thus, more high school students took Junior FlexSpanish this year than last year.

One of the positives of FLEX Spanish isthat it enables companies to check up on anemployee’s Spanish grade instantly becauseit is a unique examination in Korea thattests applicants’ oral and essay writingskills.

Both skills are essential to those whowant to handle Spanish correctly andusefully, and as mentioned above, one’sSpanish ability becomes valuable if theperson possesses a certain capacity ofconversation and writing skills.

Korean students tend to concentrate moreon grammar and vocabulary.

They are also important but listening, speaking and writing skills must also beconsidered.

It is true that learning Spanish in Korea isnot simple as learning English in Korea.Getting Spanish books and study materialsis not that easy but there are still many waysto feel the beauty of this language. Usinginternet would be a very effective methodof studying Spanish and the publishinghouse of HUFS is continuously producingmaterials to help those who are interestedand willing to learn Spanish language moreeffectively.

As a predecessor, I recommend thatSpanish learners study verb conjugationscarefully and avoid mistakes on gendersand numbers of substantives. Koreans arenot used to genders and numbers ofsubstantives and it is very common thattest-takers of FLEX Spanish lose points bymaking mistake on this part.

In addition, native Spanish speakers tendto speak very fast during conversations andput the test-takers in a state of panic. However, it is important to relax and try tounderstand the conversations as a whole.

These simple points will help.

F inally, the leaves are slowly fallingdown. Autumn may be the hardest time

for the people who have not found the truelove. In addition to that, love might be thehottest issue for the young students, especially, college students. Here are twoheartbreaking love stories. From thesefeatures, the new patterns of young people’slove and their new way of thinking could beglimpsed.

“Do What You Want” and “Lover’sConcerto”

Do What You Want : It is a popular dramathat ended on September 5th, which has alarge fan group. It showed the healthy figureof a youth from eliciting the everlasting love.

One day Ko Bok-su, a pickpocket, findshimself that he has a brain tumor. However,he accidently starts having a crush on awoman, Chen Kyung. But sadly enough, healready had a girlfriend, Song Mi-rae.Kyung tries to avoid her loving feelingstoward Bok-su, but she can’t. As the timegoes by, their love towards each otherbecomes greater. Mi-rae figures out that hehas no feelings towards her, so she slowlytries to get away from him. However, oneday Mi-rae realizes that Bok-su has a braintumor and Kyung finds out about it as well. However, the disease couldn’t withholdthem from the power of love. As usual, theysmoothly accept the situation. Beingpersuaded by Kyung, Bok-su finallyundergoes the operation.

Lover’s Concerto : It is a movie, releasedon September 13th, which was successful inshowing the power of pure love of the loversof the good old days.

It starts with an unknown mail with apicture in it. Then the story goes back to thepast. Ji-hwan, a working student at a cafe, falls in love at the first sight with a girl, Su-inwho drops by the shop. And the followinggirl Kyung-hee was her best friend. In ahurry, Ji-hwan confesses his love to her, butshe refuses. However, Ji-hwan doesn’t wantto lose this great opportunity, so he tries to bea close friend with them and afterwards, theybecame best friends. They spend a wonderfultime which they consider as the mostprecious moment in their lives. As the time

goes by, Ji-hwan’s love slowly moves toKyung-hee. But it doesn’t turn out to be sogood. It was this strange feeling that camethrough them. Two girls leave him withsaying that he is not comfortable for themanymore. But there was secret reason thatnobody could realize. Ji-hwan couldn’t let goof the beautiful time they had together. After5 years later, he searches everywhere, and hefinally finds them. However, things hadchanged. It wasn’t like the old days. He findsthat Su-in died and Kyung-hee dying. Themovie ends with Ji-hwan meets Kyung-heeagain.

Death is a part of life There are many things similar in these

characters. The first thing is the attitudes ofaccepting death. From these two examples, people can see how the youngsters face thedeath. It shows the changes of behavior inhandling the death by making the maincharacter die at the end. In the old days, if alover is expected to die, the partner gives uphope and tries to set everything the way ithas to be. However, these features show thereaction towards death has changed.

In the drama “Do What You Want(DWYW)”, the death finally turns out to be a

turning point of Bok-su’s life. Furthermore,he carves out the fortune. Moreover, viewerscan see the strong will in the scene where hetries to be a stunt man, as far as he couldmove his body. He is turning the mishap intoluck. This is just a one aspect of the youngpeople’s positive thinking.

It is seen in the movie “Lover’s Concerto”as well. The two girls don’t care about theirdeath-dealing condition, and what’s more, they enjoy their remaining life. They alwayssmile and pretend that they are alright. Noone could’ve realized that they had a fataldisease. People might say, young people aretoo weak and they have no patience than theformer times. But watching this drama andthe movie, these thoughts could be changed. The reason is that these reflect the way ofthinking of the youths in their twenties.

Of course there is also kind of adjustmentin their remaining life before the death, andthe sad moments as well. But the viewer cansee the conversion of the young people’sattitudes of the young people towards deathand the changes in the way they think.

Unusual triple love affair The traditional patterns of love triangle

show that two girls fight each other to

capture the boy’s heart. Is it the same in thesetwo? Perhaps not. Both of them have gottenout of the stereotypes that two girls mustfight.

In “DWYW”, Mi-rae talks straight toKyung that she doesn’t like her, but itdoesn’t seem like the girls striving for oneman’s heart. They are just competitors notthe enemy. Kyung even surreptitiouslyadmires Mi-rae’s dignified behavior and thestrong will.

In the Lover’s Concerto, two girls arefriends. Therefore they care about each otherand they don’t really express their feelings. At this point, people can throw away the oldstereo type that love triangle always involvepeople fighting with each other.

Different view is needed What can people learn from here? It could

be the new way of thinking and talking of theyoung men and women. Some seniors mightsay, that young people are too self-involved,and very inconsiderate towards other people. But from now on, they might need to changetheir thoughts because with seeing thesefeatures people could know the changes aregoing through the twenty’s. They see thedeath as in the novel, “Lost and Delirious”written by Murakami Haruki, that death isnot the end of one’s life, but it’s just a part oflife. And they think of each other and givecare for them. Now they are different. Theyare not the one in the age of informationanymore who likes to be alone and knowsonly oneself. They love with considerationtowards others and they do not take deathseriously but accept that as a part of theirlives. Thus, they are positive and they don’twant to bruise other people’s feelings.

But there is one thing that people mustthink twice. It will be nice if everyyoungsters turn out that way. Director ofDWYW says this is the type of the youththese days. Is it hard to believe? Think aboutit.

Nobel prize closer to public

I just listen to their music because it has fast rhythm and their lyrics do notinclude love stories. These days, almost every song’s lyrics are about love

affairs, breaking ups, confession and hunting a boyfriend or a girlfriend. All of themare childish and boring,”says Kim Soo-hyun (S-01). Similar comments of “Geou-book-i”’s music, meaning “Turtle”in English, are made by many people.

The group’s famous song is “The four seasons”and it is a remade song of one ofthe 70s “Minjoong”pop song, “The four seasons”. Kim Eun-hyung, the reporter of“The Internet Hankyoreh”called this phenomenon as “Upgraded Minjoong Pop

music”. According to Kim, the phenomenon possesses more negative effects thanpositive ones and the most important reason for going against it is that the originalmeaning and background of Minjoong pop music get discolored. This assertion ispretty convincing but the attempt of reaching a higher standard of Korean lyrics alsohas got to be considered.

Same thing happened at the beginning of the early nineties. Many food companiesstarted to name their new products in Korean but they didn’t use grammaticallycorrect vocabularies. For example, Korea’s leading confectionary launched a newbiscuit called “Nunetine”. The name was a Korean word but the company used it withthe wrong spelling. Many Korean specialists insisted that the company was creating abad trend with its naming process but others noted that it was a good attempt at givingconsumers an opportunity to become familiar with the brand names. “The idealmethod would be using a correct word with the right spelling. However, theconfectionay market is full of foreign names and our attempt at using names like‘Nunetine’certainly gives a good chance,”claimed the copywriter of the product.

Kim is not the only person who worried about the “Upgrade Minjoong Pop music.”Those people who actually know how Minjoong pop music was made and becamepopular still worried more.

The music possesses extreme sorrow and lamentation of the laborers of theseventies. This is why the lyrics of the Minjoong pop music songs are meaningful andimportant. Lee Min-jung, who worked in a textile mill in her youth, said that hercolleagues and she were not interested in the melody of the songs. They just focusedon the lyrics because singing and listening to these songs were the only ways toexpress themselves and forget their stress. However, times are behind us now and itwould be very difficult to make young people understand the working situation ofseventies. “It is a cultural trend,”stated a famous culture critique. He also expressedthat conflict like this one partly comes from the generation gap. Of course, there aremore reasons but this seems to be the most important one.

Nobody is wrong, but the fact is that young people are enjoying “Geou-book-i”’ssongs and other remade songs of the seventies. In addition, lots of middle-aged peopleare also pleased to hear their nostalgic songs once more. As a culture critique oncesaid, culture is just culture and trend is just trend, nothing more and nothing less.

Without any doubt, singers like “Geou-book-i”and “MC Sniper”try to bring theoriginal meanings of the Korean songs and hopefully the younger generation will geta clearer idea of the meaning of these lyrics including the “Upgraded Minjoong Popmusic.”

Will the new generation understand them? To get an answer, people should wait atleast a decade.

M any people usually think that“Chanson”is a kind of French pop

song. However, It is a musical genreindigenous to France with a tradition of morethan 10 centuries. Antiquity troubadours, who were wandering minstrels during themiddle ages, sang it.

In this sense, Chanson is the oldest and themost popular type of music that originated inFrance. Chanson sings about French historyand the feelings about French people. It’sfans range from the laborers to the president.

For example, Chanson deals with variousthemes from children’s songs like, “Papaaime maman (papa likes mama)”to thenational anthem of France “ LaMarseillaise.”Chanson also sings about thejoys and sorrows of everyday life. This iswhy people like it and still remainsextremely popular.

The French word “Chanson”has the same

origin with the Italian word Canzone, meaning simply a song. All the Frenchpopular song is called Chanson. TraditionalChanson has some unique features, whichare different from those of traditional songsof other countries. Chanson is somewhat likea drama, because it’s lyrics are composed totell a story. All the words in a chanson arespoken in the plain everyday languages.Only occasionally a chanson uses an argot(secret language). “ Les Champs-Elysees,” a familiar

Chanson to Korean people, sings of thebeauty of the street named “les Champs-Elysees”and the romance of two younglovers. In “ Pinocchio” became thebackground music of a “Paris baguette”CF,a woman sings about her hope of being ableto follow autumn like small Pinocchio does. And in the opening song of “Midnight TVEntertainment (a program of SBS)” called

Ohio, a woman sings about her wish to go tosome other place.

The history of Chanson is 2,000 years old.The French has sung Chanson. Monks andpriests in progressive churches made gospelsongs in the form of the Chanson in order tomake people became familiar with thecatholic hymns. In this way, a religiousgenre of Chanson was born to glorify theachievements of saints and the grace of God.

During the Renaissance period, Parisbegan to prosper as the cultural center ofFrance both in name and reality. At thattime, the people who favored Chanson werethe common folks. In early 17 centuries,Pont-Neuf, the bridge that spanned the SeineRiver became the most popular spot.

The first Word War (1914~1918) had alsoinfluenced Chanson. For Parisiansintoxicated in triumph, a series of a largescale of revue(social theater) were performed

in succession and splendid Chansons wereproduced. The period around 1930 alsomarked a time of great growth of Chanson.Records have spread to almost everyhousehold. Thus, it played an important partin a popularization of Chanson.

To be honest, Chanson has undergonesome changes over the years, but its originalspirit remains the same. On one handChanson reflects the ethos of the Frenchpeople holding on to their old tradition, buton the other hand Chanson embraceschanges of times. This is why Chansonremains popular forever in the heart of allpeople.

B eer and student, both can’t beseparated these days. Nearly all

drinking parties in college start and breakup with beer. Beer is a natural part ofstudent’s lives. But unfortunately, most ofus who drink beer do not know about it soaccurately. There are lots of theories aboutthe origin of beer, and people can sharecommonness.

It’s quite simple. After human startedcivilized life, they made the bread. One daypeople knew that an old bread under rainbecame special. It was the first beer. Peoplecan make bread from barley. It means thatbeer comes from barley. But it’s not stillperfect. To make a real beer, we actuallyneed germinated barley. It’s called malt. For beer, the malt is the body and the hop isthe spirit. Without the hop, the beer can’tget its particular bitter flavor. The hopcomes from Humulus lupulus. It’s a plantthat grows in mild climate regions of Asiaand Europe. The hop was first discovered atHamkyung Namdo, and Haesan in Korea,in 1934. It’s usually cultivated inKangwondo these days. Hop is veryimportant scent for beer. It makes theunique incense of beer and because of that, the beer stored for a long time.

The beer usually has a good influence onour body. In the book called “Bier undGesundheit (beer and health)” by W. J.Uhlman, 1970, we can see that beer has agood effect in alimentotherapy. It’s becauseof the female hormone from hop. The beerhas medical benefits not only on the innerparts of the body but also on the outer parts. An archaeologist said that the ancientEgyptians used beer for beautiful skin andClaopatra also used it for the same purpose. It was just a simple theory from one of thearchaeologists. But, from the recent study itbecame quite real. Actually, apharmaceutist from the “Bayern” king“Sausfuss” said in 1541, “Beer could helprestore elasticity smooth breath and face forladies.”

There are also various kinds of beers.Hoegaarden is a special beer from Belgium.

It is a white beer and has 5% of alcohol. The aftertaste of this beer is very strange. Ittastes like burned meat. Desperados is alsoa different kind of beer. It is a beer fromFrance with 5.9% of alcohol. It also has arelish, mixed with maccol, a koreanbeverage, and fruits. And the glucose makesit a little bit sweeter. That’s the reason whylots of girls prefer this beer. San Miguel is apalatable beer for the Asians and it’s alsothe most reprehensive beer from Asia, because it contains 4% of cereal. Thismakes the aftertaste very smooth. It’s tenderlike an ice cream.

San Miguel does not have the shootingtaste despite of the 5% of alcohol thatcommon beer has. Tequila Slamma is abeer without malt. It sounds funny but it is abeer with 6.4% of Tequila. It tastes likeKorean lemon Soju and since including theTequila, people cound keep its tradition. For example, lots of young couples drinkthe Slamma after eating lemon, and lickeach other’s hand in which salts aredispersed. Corona is also a special drinkfrom Mexico. People put a piece of lemonin the bottle and then they drink the beer.Because of that, it has a very tender taste. The students at HUFS can find all these in“UTAH”, which is located in Sinsa-dong.The owner graduated from HUFS, soHUFSans will get a good service.

E verybody wants to look nice. This iswhy boys want to wear Nike shoes and

girls want plastic operation. This is howpeople upgrade their looks these days. Boththeir outside and inside. This goeseverywhere, including our campus. ManyHUFS freshmen are studying in the library toprepare their future.

The society wants them to be perfect bothinside and outside. This is the key and themembers of the society must follow the newcultural trend that regard both. If they don’tfollow the trend it will be hard for them tojoin the upper class.

Do you like expensive high qualitythings?

College students are usually catch strappedand so their organize gae, mutual savingclub, to buy some luxurious. This is whythey called Luxury Generation. Park Jin-young (BE-02) and Shim Min-a (BE-02)said, “Expensive famous brands never go outof fashion and they last long. That is why webuy the famous brands.” The chiefresearcher at Samsung Economy ResearchInstitute Lee Sang-min said, “It is also veryimportant to have a high consumer culturefrom the standpoint of industrialdevelopment and we should develop ourown fine goods instead of criticizing theimportation of foreign goods.”

But as students we must think about theside effects because expensive foreignarticles drain our finance. So our economyhurts.

In this connection, the most seriousproblem is the underground imitationeconomy, which is negative for our societyas a whole.

If people spend a lot of time and energyfor expensive luxuries but can not tell if theyare being cheated, then, it is sincerelyrequired for them to think one more timebefore they are buying.

The people who want a plasticoperation

“The faults that beautiful girls have can beforgiven.” It is commonly said in Korea. Moreover, it is an important thing to have abeautiful face to get a well-paid job forwomen these days. It means people’sappearance influences the business career. That’s the result of our mass-media that justfocuses in the beauty contest and othersensational model shows. There are over 200plastic surgeries in some place in Gangnam. We will never see such a plastic operationtown in the world.

Pursuing beauty is not wrong. But it willbe wrong when it becomes the only way tocompare people. We should also think aboutthe beauty of our inner side. For humanbeings it’s a very important thing to have abalance in outside and inside.

The operation has also side-affects. Thereare many people who are suffering because

of the sequela after the surgical operation. The other problem is the increase of thequack physician. As the market of thecorrection of deformities grows, the numberof illegal doctors will also grow. The reasonof this situation is quite simple. The marketbecame very huge. And it became very easyto earn much money in this market.Furthermore, lots of people who want aplastic operation don’t have the large amountof money. And that makes them to have asurgical operation by a quack doctor. It’sdangerous and there are lots of people whoget bad effects after the operation. Actually, there was a case where a person died aftergetting a jaw reduction operation lastDecember.

Beauty is not everything. There are lots ofthings that are more important than thebeauty. It’s a common sense. But in lots ofsituation we value the person only with theoutside. Because of that we need to be

beautiful in every situation.

To be an intelligent student in thecollege

Many seniors in our school said that thefreshmen in our university became differentas the old days freshmen. Kim Dong-un(BA-98) said “In former days, there was nofreshmen in the library instead of the mid-term and final weeks, but now there are lotsof first grade students who are in the libraryeveryday.” They are preparing for they ownfuture. It is also a good example of the wayto upgrade themselves.

The society have changed these days veryfast. Our environments want us to be aperfect man, if we want to participate theupper class. And nowadays many studentswant to have a high-quality life. That makesthem to go to the library at the first year ofthe school. This could be a good phase forour economy. But it’s not good for HUFSunion. HUFSans already saw theunharmonious Daedongae last June.

To prepare for them own future is veryimportant. Though, we should know that ourTeam, it could be everything, needsometimes its sacrifice. Without theparticipation and sacrifice no group willsurvive. We can see it from the HUFS Daily. The society only with individualist neversurvive.

The students must need to know that themaster of our club ,college or HUFS areourselves. The new generation should thinkabout this point. If it’s not the really rightway, it must be changed. The principle ofour society is ourselves. The constituent canchange it if they really want. Now it dependson ourselves.

Looking into new ways of self-upgrading

Upgrading, necessary but properly

Kim Min-suk / The Argus

Some luxurious goods are displaying at the showcase in the masterpiece sectionof a department.

I t is no exaggeration tosay that Um Hong-gil

is the greatest alpinistthat Korea has everproduced. Um Hong Gilbecame the seventhclimber in the world tohold the distinction ofHimalayan Crown -having scaled all the 14mountains of above8,000m in height. We notonly see him in the TVcommercials andbroadcasts, but also onthe school advertise-ments. That’s because heis a freshman of theChinese Department atHUFS. But owing to histight schedule it is noteasy to see him.Fortunately enough, hegave a ready consent tointerview.

Um is a perfect manfor mountain climbing. Mt. Dobong especially - absorbed in the memories of hischildhood and adolescence had an impact on his mind. His playground was themountain and the mountain was his life. So it was natural that he rock-climbed inmiddle school. He started to learn mountaineering as the time went by.

Why did he decide to take on impregnable mountains over the life in comfort? Umdoesn’t like to be lazy and quiet. His challenges on the mountain - of mental limit, physical limit and fervent desire- are the battles of his life. It is truly difficult to climbmountains, but he made an attempt to climb mountains in Himalaya. Themountaineering was successful in the Himalayas under difficult circumstances -temperature in the F 20’s and steep mountain, which sometimes singed his feathers. Noone could predict with certainty Um return alive from the Himalayas. All through, hecontinued pushing on undauntedly despite 14th failures, and it took a total of 15 years.

Um talked about the most difficult mountain that he climbed out of many ones that hehad climbed.

He says descending from a mountain is more difficult than ascending. Whenascending, he thought only about getting to the top than did his desperate efforts. But,the fear came to him when he was at the top. His body strength was weakened due toexhaustion. And the prostration had come before the feeling of accomplishment. Then,he descended the mountain in the worst condition. Every time he wanted to stop andswore not to go up mountain again, he prepared again on his coming back alive. ManyWesterners also ignored him as an Easterner and would not authorize his achievementand made cynical remarks as he invaded their sphere. He had made a surprisingimpression on the Westerners that Easterner also can do just the same!

He determined to take Chinese courses. Five visitations to China left many feelings tohim, who didn’t feel uncomfortable about the conversation. Chinese was too difficultfor him. Chosun race’s interpreter had many problems just like the economic loss andintention error. So, He set a goal to learn Chinese. Then he applied for HUFS. His headwas filled with thoughts dealing with mountains every time except when he wassleeping. But learning was too hard and it made it hard to plan to go up the mountain. He complained that white hair increased recently. He joined “mountain climbing club”which is in HUFS. He was acquainted with them before his HUFS entrance.

T here was once a painter who made thehuman body glow by using the light

and the flow of air. The man who did thatamazing feat is Pierre Auguste Renoir(1841~1919). Consider his work “Girls atthe Piano”.

“Girls at the Piano” is one of the Renoir’smost famous paintings along with “Bal at theMoulin de la Galette”, “The Boating Party

Lunch”, “Two sisters”, and so forth. The firstimpression one gets from the “Girls at thePiano” probably is brightness and tranquility. This particular painting portrays the daily lifeof upper class people in 19th century,France. According to critic, in spite of thebanality, Renoir caught the rhythm ofeveryday life and depicted it with variousradiant colors. Actually, as this picture

exemplifies, he liked to convey a sense ofwarmth and tenderness in space. Here, twoyoung ladies are concentrating on the pianoscore. Soft tender curves in the picture, makethe picture seen full of motion. Instead offollowing the characteristics of otherimpressionists, Renoir often used long andshort lines crossing one another and thusdiffused the colors, so that his pictureslooked milder and softer. This tender tone ofcolor suggests that the hearts of the twoladies were in harmony. About this work, experts usually say that almost everyonewho likes art can feel the harmony of theform and color which can be hardly achievedby going through the strict style.

Renoir, was born in 1841 at Limoges,France. At the age of 13 he became a potter.During his spare time in the factory, hefollowed drawing classes and in 1860, hestudied in the studio of the Swiss painter,Charles Gleyre, where he met his artist-friends Monet, Sisley, Bazille, the futurefounders of Impressionism. In 1860’s Renoirlived with Monet in Bazille’s house.Consequently, Monet’s influences made histechnique evolve toward little brushstrokesusing vibrant colors, leading him towardImpressionism. It was the 1870’s thatRenoir’s technique reached its peak. Heactively participated in the impressionist

exhibitions. From that period on, peopleremember him with the picture “The swing”and the most famous “Bal at the Moulin dela Galette”, a great drawing of numerousfriends and Montmartre girls. Since thattime, his technique has been firmly definedas a “masterful rendering of movement andfacial expression”. By the way, he paintedmany youthful portraits of his acquaintances, mostly artists and writers. In his later years,he suffered arthritis. However, the diseasecouldn’t stop him from drawing. He finished“Terrace at Cagnes” in that period, and hebroadened his landscape using luminous andvibrant colors.

Using primary colors contrasting has beenthe characteristrc of his style. Not lettinghimself drift away in the streams of time andthe trend of the impressionism, Renoircreated his own field and style in painting. His passion and talent in arts was handeddown to his last son, Jean Renoir, a greatFrench film director. In terms of catching thebeauty of life, many artists and all mankindare indebted to Renoir.
