MOKOPANE - Sylvania Platinum’s legal advisor last week informed Northern News that the company will not have to restart the consultation process around the con-troversial Volspruit mine planned in the Nyl floodplain just south of Mokopane.

From Sylvania’s letter titled “Comment on press speculation” it was not clear whether the company also denies its final Environmental Impact Assessment was rejected by the Limpopo department of economic development environment and tourism.

Sylvania cites two national newspaper reports which claimed that the Environmen-tal Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Vol-spruit Development was rejected, requiring that the application process be restarted. “Sylvania hereby confirms that the interpre-tation by the newspaper journalists is incor-rect,” the letter reads.

In a recent letter to interested and af-fected parties, however, Sylvania’s environ-mental consultant, E-Science & Associates clearly stated that “the Final Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) has been rejected by the Limpopo department of eco-nomic development, Environment and Tour-

Volspruit mine: Sylvania remains confidentism (LEDET) due to the following reasons:

a) The Final EIAR still does not clarify how the mine will not increase the level of water resources utilisation in the areas af-fected by the proposed mining project.

b) During the presentation made at the Focus Group meeting held on 10 February 2015, E-Science Associates (Pty) Ltd indi-cated that grouting has been excluded from the study. However, the Final EIAR still refers to a Grouting Strategy.

c) The Final EIAR does not clearly ad-dress which alternative developments the applicant may implement instead of the pro-posed mine.

d) The Final EIAR did not address issues around the development if a Biodiversity Off-set Strategy.

e) A Wetland Offset Strategy must be developed.

f) An Environmental Risk Assessment Re-port (Level 2) needs to be completed.”

Sylvania says this was merely a request for clarification on matters related to water consumption and a request that additional work on the EIA be done to include a Biodi-versity and Wetland Offset strategy.

Emile Honiball, legal advisor of the Nyl

Action Group said the group would insist on community participation on anything that changes on the original impact report. “We especially want to be involved in the identifying of an offset strategy to ensure the area chosen for this strategy meets the exact criteria in terms of this unique wetland biodiversity.

Sylvania says it remains optimistic that the Application will be granted as the de-tailed Environmental Impact Study did not find any fatal flaws within the proposed project.

LEDET has requested that its comments be addressed and an amended final EIAR is submitted by July 19.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Constituency head for Mogalakwena, Beyers Smit (MP), on Wednesday issued a statement in which "the DA welcomes the department of mineral resources's decision to decline the application [EIA report] for the Volspruit mine next to the ecologically sensitive Nyl river.”

LEPHALALE – No arrests has been made following last week’s shooting of two Medupi workers.

A group of workers were waiting for trans-port on Thursday morning when an unknown person fired shots at them. Two people were injured; one was hit in the stomach and the other lightly wounded on the ear.

The suspect fled on foot. By Friday police reinforcements were sent to the area.

“An integrated team consisting of crime intelligence and detectives is investigating the attempted murder cases,” Col Ronel Otto, spokesperson for the police, said.

Eskom’s spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, said on Thursday that it was not clear if the shooting was related to the disciplinary hear-ings for a group of about 2 000 workers who took part in an illegal strike in March.

Meanwhile Eskom’s CEO, Brian Molefe, said that a bomb threat at the Kusile plant halted work last Sunday.

An SMS was received that read: “I have planted bombs at Kusile and they will go off today.”

According to Molefe the bomb squad came and declared the site safe. “Intelligence teams are now trying to locate the source,” Molefe said.

“The few hours that it took looking for a non-existent bomb from an SMS were costly and added to the delays in the build pro-gramme.”

MOKOPANE - The African National congress (ANC) replaced Tlhalefi Mashamaite as the Mayor of the Mogalakwena Municipality in Mokopane with Malesela Phineas Sebat-jane, the former municipal manager of the Waterberg District Municipality and the Lep-halale Municipality.

After months of political instability and ongoing controversy at the Mogalakwena Municipality, many residents who openly op-posed Mashamaite gave a sigh of relief when the ANC recalled him earlier this month.

However, the announcement that newly appointed Sebatjane would replace Masha-maite as Mayor has already been met with resistance.

The Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA) rejected Sebatjane’s appointment and insists that William Mabuela should to be reinstated as Mogalakwena’s Mayor.

Mabuela was elected by the Council in April last year.

“Mabuela is after all the people’s choice and the ANC must recognise and respect our voice. We also want Willy Kekana to be rein-stated as our municipal manager,” said the MRA’s spokesperson Oscar Ratombo.

The Provincial Secretary of the ANC, Nocks Seabi said the decision to deploy Sebatjane, took into consideration his lead-ership capabilities in the local government sphere. “Sebatjane is no newcomer in local governance.“He is a member of the ANC Waterberg regional executive committee, and he has served in the REC at various times,” concluded Seabi.

Sebatjane undertook to review the prob-lems and to take active steps to bring back full functionality at the municipality. “There is no doubt that the work ahead is challeng-

ing. Mogalakwena has been through rough seas this past year. Together we aim to turn the municipality’s current status around," he said.

"I am confident that, as a team, we will improve the lives of all in Mogalakwena by focusing on improving the quality of basic services. I, as the Mayor, undertake to serve the people of Mogalakwena with commit-ment,” said Sebatjane at the Lekalakala Council Chambers after his inauguration on Wednesday.

The new Mayor of the Mogalakwena Municipality, Malesela Phineas Sebatjane, was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Lekalakala Council Chamber.

LEPHALALE – A Nigerian na-tional was arrested for possession of counterfeit goods last week.

The 23-year-old man was arrested when police mem-bers received a tip off that the suspect allegedly had counter-feit Puma and Adidas goods in his possession. When the suspect was searched police found counterfeit beauty products in a bag in his pos-session.

The suspect appeared in the Lephalale magistrate court on Monday and was denied bail.

LEPHALALE - A man was killed in an al-leged shootout with a home owner in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The man, an alleged robber, apparently broke the back door of a house in Waterkloof street to gain entry to the house.

Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale police says two suspects gained entry into a house in Nicolette street where they allegedly robbed an elderly woman of her handbag and safe keys.

The suspects then proceeded to break into the house in Waterkloof street. The owner of the house heard noises and went to investigate. The police say that a shootout

LEPHALALE – A man, thought to be responsible for various house breakings, was arrested last week.

Sergeant Selojela and Constable Kekana of the Lephalale police managed to apprehend a suspect that can allegedly be linked to numerous house breakings in and around Marapong and Lephalale.

According to warrant officer Frans Mo-koena, the arrest of Daniel Maropola is a breakthrough for the police.

“We are positive that the suspect’s ar-rest will lead to a decline in house break-ings in our area and want to congratulate the members on their sterling perfor-mance,” Mokoena said.

Alleged robber shot deadtook place between the owner and the two suspects.

Upon investigation, the body of an Afri-can male was later found near the house.

Community Policing Forum chairman, Thys Eloff, asks residents to be vigilant. “We’ve had two incidents in the same area where the suspects gained entry into houses that were equipped with burglar bars and alarm systems,” he said. “Resi-dents must ensure that they take all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones.”

Access is available to the CPF duty room and its patrollers in an emergency.

MOKOPANE - The bail application for the two suspects in the Sello Gideon Fatana murder case at the Mokopane Magistrate court on Monday has been postponed for a second time.

The 45-year old Charles Mogale and Thabo Alfred Matlaila (30) are still held in custody and are expected to appear on 13 July for their bail proceedings.

Tension continued to mount as testimo-nies were heard about the three suspects accused of murdering Fatana at his home in Mokopane earlier this year.

The state’s witness, Col. William Ramogobedi, the principal investigation of-ficer in the case, was called to the stand to brief the court about his investigation and more specifically to convince the court why he is opposing Mogale and Matlaila’s bail application.

Ramogobedi told the court that he came across information relating to Fatana’s murder. He detailed the alleged premeditated and planned crime.

The investigation officer’s testimony con-cluded in stating that Desmond Machaba (suspect number three), confessed to hiring

Mogale and Matlaila to kill Fatana. One day after the killing, Ramogobedi testified, Machaba also confessed to handing over R40 000 to Matlaila as payment for getting the job done.

Ramogobedi’s cited his concern for the general public's safety in his attempt to convince the court not to grant bail to the applicants.

He also said the accused might evade trial by fleeing to a neighbouring country with or without passports knowing that they face a life sentence if they are found guilty of a schedule six offense. Another concern is that state witnesses are at risk of being initimidated should the accused be granted bail.

The bail application was not finalised. Magistrate Joseph Ngoasheng postponed the bail application to proceed on 13 July.

In the meanwhile, the police reports that Desmond Machaba and his co-accused, Samuel Matjila and Patric Sekhu, who were denied bail by the Mokopane magistrate in the Charles Mgidi murder case, arranged for their legal representative to appeal the court’s decision on their behalf in the Polokwane High Court.

“Die publiek is redelik goedgesind teenoor my.

My vlag is my vlag!“Ek en ma was mos die week by daai

Nou is ek behoorlik nuuskierig. As sy arms so lyk, moes iets vreesliks gebeur het. “Vertel man.”

My wapperende Blou Bul vlag agterna.

UMODIMOLLE – Positive attitudes and strong bodies played an important role in securing good scores for the gym-nasts from the Marshall Gymnastics Academy (MGA) at last weekend’s Ecarte Invitational Gymnastics com-petition in Modimolle.

Level 1 to 3 gymnasts from MGA travelled to Ecarte last Saturday to compete against 10 other clubs from Gauteng and Limpopo. This was the first competition of the season and offered the young gymnasts the op-portunity to prepare themselves for the upcoming competition season.
