The dynamic nature o todaysbattlefeld requires reliable andon-demand satellite Communi-

cations On-the-Move (COTM) or thewarfghter. To meet this demand, thewarfghter requires low-cost, low-pro-fle, reliable and perormance-basedterminals. Northrop Grummans Ka-Band terminal is the next-generationsatellite communications terminalthat equips the warfghter with trueSATCOM capability at an aordablecost and that is ully compliant withthe Wideband Gapfller System (WGS)requirements.

System OverviewThe Ka-Band terminal is a sel-con-tained system composed o advancedarray antenna, low-noise amplifers

(LNAs), solid-state amplifers, turn-table, modem and liquid cooling. Theterminal design uses separate transmitand receive apertures, both mountedon a very low-profle turntable. Thephased array instantaneously steersthe beam electronically anywhereacross the entire hemisphere abovethe horizon to counteract the plat-orm vibration caused by driving overrugged terrain. The turntable correctsor vehicle turning, changing the

antenna tracking angle in the azi-muth plane. The design allows or ullhemispherical coverage anywhere it isdeployed.

Next-Generation CommunicationsNorthrop Grummans next-generationKa-Band terminals provide IP con-nectivity or the warfghter around theworld. It can back-haul ISR video and

receive its distribution. The down-link data rate is 256 Kb, extendableto 8-15 Mbps with shared satellitedownlinks. The uplink data rate is 512Kbps, sufcient to support ISR videoplus three other multimedia applica-

tions, including voice and data. Thesystem is easy to operate, automati-cally locates and acquires satelliteconnectivity. Once the terminal hasacquired the link with the satellite, the terminal maintains a lock with thesatellite. This design does not employtraditional gimbals that contribute tothe MTBF deterioration over the lieo the terminal. This design provides

unprecedented data rate in a smallcompact volume, unprecedentedantenna beam-shaping capability, superior terminal elevation coverageand superior MTBF perormance at alow cost.
