On Tuesday 12th December Neil Aubin, Digital Advisor for Microsoft Services United Kingdom, visited Brynteg School to deliver a computer programming workshop to a group of our year 9 girls. The first computer programmer was Ada Lovelace who wrote code with Charles Babbage for his Analytical Engine in the 1830’s. The year 9 girls worked in groups to solve challenges like programing a robot to build a structure. They were also introduced to programming by writing code for the Minecraft computer game. After discussing “The Internet of Things” (IoT) they came up with technology that has not been invented like a contact lens that displays data that you might need when you blink, for example a shopping list. The visit highlighted the lack of females in the challenging, creative but very rewarding career of computer programming. All our year 9 pupils will develop their programming skills in their ICT lessons this year.

What is BBC News School Report? BBC News School Report gives 11-16 year-old students in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. Using lesson plans and materials from the BBC website, and with support from BBC staff and partners, teachers help students develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters. On 15th March 2018, Brynteg school will take part in an annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC aims to link. Following on from the BBC School Report, the BBC have introduced a work experience scheme for 16 to 18 year-olds. We have some excellent news Dylan Pritchard's application for BBC Young Reporters has been successful.

Dylan from year 11 has been selected by the BBC to have a 5 day placement with them and he will be going to the 6 Nations Training Camp to interview Rhys Webb the Welsh international rugby union player.

He wrote an excellent piece about the importance of working hard and being determined to be successful and he used Rhys Webb as an example.

    Well done Dylan!

Our annual Carol Service on 19th December is an opportunity for us, as a school community, to come together in this season of praise and thanksgiving. The evening also provides us with the opportunity to allow many of our talented pupils to perform. This truly became an evening of celebration. Well done to all pupils who took part, they were such a credit to the school. Once again St Mary’s Nolton Church, was packed to the rafters. The evening was a musical treat with performances from pupils across all year groups and abilities performing well-known and newly discovered Christmas songs and music. Engaging, polished readings of the Christmas story and congregational carol singing ensured that all who attended felt that Christmas had begun. For some pupils it was their very first Carol Service in Brynteg and for others their last. I hope that those who leave Brynteg this year, leave with very fond memories of Christmas in Brynteg. Thank you to all of the staff involved in preparing the pupils for the Carol Service. Thank you all once again for making another treasured Christmas memory for me. Mrs Fender

“What a superb Carol Service. The pupils who performed were such a credit to the school. A big thanks to the

  • What a fantastic morning Brynteg’s Performing Arts Department had spent entertaining the Adult Special Needs Unit in Bridgend on 21st December. A lovely mix of year 10 Drama sketches, poetry, flute choir and junior and senior vocal motion carols. A truly magical feeling and sharing of Christmas cheer from our pupils! Well done all!

    Mrs Z Fender

  • Calling all pupils!

All pupils are welcome to attend Vocalmotion. No audition or previous

    singing experience is necessary.

Please note that all pupils having instrumental peripatetic lessons in school should be attending their

music lessons and school ensemble rehearsals each week, as well as

practising their instrument each day at home.

Recently year 9 students studied a variety of pop genres and they went on to write their own lyrics and compose their own song entitled 'Respect Yourself' in the timeless style of Country and Western. They rocked the music room with a truly memorable performance and the audience just couldn't help joining in with catchy chorus. Da Iawn!

  • Psychology News Newyddion Seicoleg

Is Psychology a science? This was a challenging question that was posed to 13 Sixth Form Psychology students at a Psychology Conference in Bristol on 4th December. How do we know Psychology is a science? Is the scientific research gathered robust and accurate enough or is Psychology really a Pseudoscience? These are the kinds of questions that year 12 and year 13 students will face on their examination paper next summer and so they listened intently to lecturers from top universities such as Bath Spa and Nottingham Trent who put forward their arguments both for and against. Students had the opportunity to learn about scientific psychology experiments and even had the chance to participate in the some such as the ‘stroop effect’. They also explored the boundaries between science and pseudoscience, looked at examples of ‘bad’ science and considered how evidence is gathered scientifically in psychology.

Following on from this, they learnt about Dr Lovatt's Dance research and how the way a person moves on the dance floor is influenced by hormones and genetic make-up. They also listened to Oliver Meech discuss the psychology of magic! Apparently the real secret behind magic tricks is that they bamboozle the brain, rather than fool the eyes. Finally, students had a demonstration of hypnosis where they had the opportunity to watch the process and consider the implications on how people think and act. This was a trip that was enjoyed by all, and one that will be on our department’s calendar again I am sure.

On Tuesday 12th December, a variety of Religion, Ethics, and Philosophy (REP) students from year 8 attended a performance of The Nativity Story at Tabernacle Chapel. The performance was organised by different denominational churches of Bridgend as an initiative to familiarise people with the biblical story of the birth of Jesus in the lead up to Christmas. Our year 8 pupils are currently working on evaluating the question ‘Has Christmas lost its true meaning?’, and this was an excellent and enjoyable opportunity for them to learn more about the Christian story.

“I was given the opportunity to go and see a nativity at a local church. All of the costumes and props were amazing and overall the play was very well rehearsed. I enjoyed watching it as it taught me the meaning of Christmas.” Neve Hayter (8N)

“The church was very kind and helpful after the show. The costumes and props were amazing, especially the wise men’s. Afterwards they were kind enough to let us have a photo with the cast. All in all it was a really good nativity that explained the real meaning of Christmas well.” Freya Williams (8N)

Mrs Thomas and Ms Waters of the REP department were delighted to take these students, and were very proud to receive so many positive comments about the excellent behaviour and enthusiasm of our pupils. Da iawn pawb!

    Source: http://hockeywales.co.uk/wales-captain-abi-welsford-retires-from-international-hockey/

Good luck to Brynteg’s very own Miss Welsford who has announced her retirement from international hockey after amassing 141 caps!

Welsford, who has amassed 141 caps has seen a sporting career span nearly two decades after joining the Wales squad in 2003. Earning her first cap that same year during the Celtic Cup held in Cardiff, Ms Welsford has been a fierce competitor for Wales as well as an inspirational role model both on and off the field. These qualities saw her named captain in 2013 an honour she has held to this day. In her time, Ms Welsford has played for Wales during both the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the 2014 Games in Glasgow, an incredible feat, although she states earning her 100th cap in Lille in 2015 was her favourite sporting moment.

During the European Championships II held in Cardiff this summer Ms Welsford sensationally broke the record for most caps held by any Welsh female hockey player, alongside fellow team mate Leah Wilkinson. With 141 caps apiece, they both overtook Wales legend Anne Ellis’ tally of 138.

Whilst representing Wales on the International stage, Welsford has also been working full time as a P.E. teacher for Brynteg Secondary School; something she explains has been difficult to juggle.

“It’s not easy to be involved in an international programme and it takes a lot of hard work both in squad weekends, but mostly daily, you always have to make sacrifices and the right choices to try to live the life of an international athlete as much as possible”.

Head Coach of the women’s squad, Kev Johnson explains how Ms Welsford has been a role model leader during her time as Captain.

    Source: hockeywales.co.uk - 4 January 2018

    Source: hockeywales.co.uk

Wales Captain, A Welsford has announced her decision to retire from International hockey; a decision she’s not taken lightly.

“I’ve been contemplating retiring for a while now, and started to think more seriously about it leading up to the Home Europeans in Cardiff. But after that tournament I wasn’t 100% decided on what to do and I didn’t want to regret retiring too early, so I decided to stay part of the programme and literally take each squad weekend at a time to see how things went. Although I absolutely love being part of the team I came to the realisation that the enjoyment had gone for me personally and it was last Sunday when I finally found peace with the decision that I was ready to stop playing at this level”.

  • “The greatest tribute I can give about Ms Welsford is that she has been the very embodiment of all of our team values in the time that I have known her, and I have no doubt for a long time before that. As a group that take our values seriously as a way of ensuring we are demonstrating positive behaviours at all times, she has been a role model to all players under her leadership and has certainly led by example. On and off the pitch she has played a key role in what has been a successful year in 2017, which started with a very positive World League 2 performance in Kuala Lumpur and ended in a memorable home Europeans where Ms Welsford herself jointly broke the Welsh women’s caps record with Vice-Captain Leah Wilkinson.

In this time, as a group we moved 6 places up the World rankings and Ms Welsford and her family can be exceptionally proud of what she has achieved as both a player and a Captain. Making the lifestyle choices you must to be an International Hockey player in a part-time programme such as ours is a demanding thing to do for a short space of time, let alone for the years of commitment Ms Welsford has shown. I am sure all staff and players both past and present will join me in thanking Ms Welsford for all she has done for Hockey in Wales and celebrate all her achievements and contributions in this time”. Stepping down from International hockey would be a challenge in itself for any athlete but even though unclear as to her next steps right now, Ms Welsford has confirmed she won’t be packing away her hockey kit entirely just yet… “I will look forward to having a bit more time and money to do other things. What that will be I don’t know exactly, but I know I’ll stay active and try out some other sports…but probably ones that are indoors in the winter! I will continue to play for Swansea Spartans, so I won’t finish playing hockey completely”.

  • In the ‘run up’ to Christmas form classes busy themselves with their fundraising ideas for the Santa Appeal. All form classes have one thing in common, to raise as much money as possible to purchase presents for families in Bridgend who find Christmas a difficult time of year financially. Historically Brynteg have endeavoured to fundraise as much as possible for this cause and this year was no exception. What a fantastic year of fundraising for the Santa Appeal we have had, the best ever! This year Brynteg have raised a staggering £4757.32. We bought presents for 160 children in the Bridgend area including 8 Brynteg pupils and a donation to the Women’s Refuge of £500.00. Well done to all involved with fundraising this year. What superb pupils we have at Brynteg!

On Sunday 3rd December 8E and Mrs Beesley walked 7.7km in aid of the Santa Appeal along Porthcawl’s coastal path. The sun shone and they walked for 1hr 20 minutes attempting Christmas songs along the way! Mrs Beesley is super proud that 16 of her form turned up to raise funds for others less fortunate than themselves!

  • Kind-hearted residents, schools, organisations and businesses have donated hundreds of Christmas presents for disadvantaged children in Bridgend so they won’t go without during the festive period.

This year, more than 300 underprivileged children will receive presents to open on Christmas Day thanks to Brynteg Comprehensive School, Bridge FM, Hafod Y Wennol, plus residents and businesses.

Christmas is a time for giving and who more worthy of receiving a Christmas cheer than vulnerable children, particularly those in care who can find this season extremely difficult.

As part of their annual ‘Santa Appeal’, Brynteg Comprehensive School raised an impressive £4757.32 by organising an array of activities, such as: selling sweets, sponsored walks, bake sales, a carolathon, and bag packing at Sainsbury’s.

In total, pupils were able to purchase presents for 160 children and young people across the county borough. In addition, they have donated £500 to the Women’s Refuge. The presents were delivered to the council offices courtesy of Apsee Removals where the Brynteg pupils were waiting to hand-deliver the gifts themselves.

Ryan Davies, Head teacher of Brynteg, was overwhelmed with the efforts of the school children, saying: “This is a great effort from the whole of the school and I am very proud of all my pupils who raised a phenomenal amount of money and were able to buy so many gifts - the lorry was jam-packed!

“I hope there will be a lot of happy children across the county borough this Christmas. Well done to everyone at Brynteg School.”

Cabinet Member for Social Services and Early Help, Councillor Phil White, said: “For many of us, Christmas is a time for celebration but there are some children who have very little to cheer about and who may not receive a single present without the generosity of local people.

“Every child deserves to have a special Christmas, so I’m absolutely delighted and overwhelmed that so many presents have been donated for disadvantaged children and teenagers in Bridgend. These gifts are truly going to make a huge difference so thank you to everyone who has taken part and donated.”

Priority will be given to those children and young people who have entered the care system at what should be a festive and fun period for them, or those who might not receive anything or very little due to their difficult family circumstances.

  • Key Stage 3: Internal Examinations 2018 – April/May 2018

    Dear Parent/Carer

We wish to inform you of the dates for the internal examinations for Key Stage 3 this year; please refer to timetable overleaf.

Pupils should register as normal and when there are no examinations scheduled, should go to normal lessons and bring all books and equipment. There is no time given in class for extra revision and as such, pupils must prepare and revise for all exams at home. We advise pupils to spend at least 1 hour revising each subject.

All KS3 internal examinations are 45 minutes in duration (pupils who currently receive Learning Support will receive their extra time allocation). Pupils sit in their registration groups in the same seat for every exam and this seating information will be cascaded to pupils in due course.

Pupils should come to all examinations prepared with all equipment, including calculators (lids removed), pens, pencils etc. All examinations should be completed in black pen. All equipment should be kept in a clear pencil case or clear plastic wallet. The only food/drink permitted in exam venues is a clear/see-through bottle of still water, if required, with the label removed.

Any pupil not adhering to our school behaviour policy during the examination period will be reported to the Head of Year and parents will be informed. Similarly, pupils found in possession of electronic equipment during an examination, such as mobile phones, data watches or similar, may be subject to disqualification.

I would like to stress the importance of attendance in school for these internal examinations and I look forward to your support in this matter. If you have any further questions I will be happy to answer them.

    Yours faithfully

    Mr R Martin

    Assistant Headteacher

  • Statutory Reading and Numeracy Tests – April/May 2018

Dear Parent/Carer You may be aware of the Welsh Government’s annual schedule to hold statutory reading and numeracy tests for all pupils in Wales in Year 2 to Year 9. These tests will be administered in April/May 2018. The Welsh Government has specified a test window and schools are expected to administer the tests in this period. The expectation is that these tests are to have the same security and protocols as those for all external exams and they will be treated as such. At Brynteg, the test schedule is as follows:

Year/ Numerical Reasoning Numeracy Procedural Reading

Year 7 Monday 30 April Thursday 3 May Friday 4 May

Year 8 Tuesday 1 May Thursday 3 May Friday 4 May

Year 9 Wednesday 2 May Thursday 3 May Friday 4 May

The test venues will be the Sports Barn and the Upper School Hall. Pupils will sit in the same seat as for their internal exams for the Procedural and Reading tests. The Numerical Reasoning test will take place in the Upper School Hall and pupils will be seated on the day. The Reading Test will take up to one hour, the Numerical Reasoning Test up to an hour and a half and the Numeracy Procedural Test will take 30 minutes. The Welsh Government usually releases the results of the tests to schools in the last week of the Summer Term. You will be informed of the results as soon as feasibly possible thereafter. Support materials for pupils aimed at parents/carers are linked on our school website. I would like to stress the importance of attendance in school for these tests and I look forward to your support in this matter. If you have any further questions I will be happy to answer them. Yours faithfully Mr R Martin Assistant Headteacher

  • Literacy Focus for January Ffocws Llythrennedd ar gyfer Mis Ionawr

Each month as a school we have a specific literacy focus to improve literacy skills and help pupils gain a better understanding of different grammatical points.

You can help to reinforce each literacy focus at home by:

testing your child on the definition of each literacy skill or grammar point.

asking your child to give you examples of sentences where they would use a particular literacy skill / grammar point.

asking your child to give you examples of lessons where they have used each literacy skill / grammar point.

    Year 7—Simple Sentences

A simple sentence has one main idea/clause and must contain a noun and a verb.

    For example :-

    I play tennis.

    Tom shut the door.

    My mum likes Eastenders.

    Year 8—Complex Sentences

Complex sentences are a type of multiple sentence and have more than one clause.

    For example :-

Clause 1 — John hit the ball.

Clause 2 — The ball smashed through the window.

Complex Sentence — John hit the ball which smashed through the window.

When John hit the ball, it smashed through the window.

    Year 9 — Semi-colons

Like commas, semi-colons mark where you would normally pause when speaking. A semi-colon can sometimes be used to replace a full stop. It links two complete sentences and turns them into one.

    For example :-

The door sung open; a masked figure strode in. He never took any exercise; consequently he became fat. She was very tired; she had worked late the night before.

    Numeracy — try these riddles.

    1. What number do you get when you multiply all of the numbers from a telephone’s number pad?

    2. What is the next number in the sequence? 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, …

    3. A rat is placed at the beginning of a maze and must make it to the end. There are four paths at the start that he has an equal chance of taking :

Path A takes 5 minutes and leads to the end,

Path B takes 8 minutes and leads to the start,

Path C takes 3 minutes and leads to the end,

Path D takes 2 minutes and leads to the start.

What is the expected amount of time it will take for the rat to finish the maze?

Literacy and Numeracy News Newyddion Llythrennedd a Rhifedd

Each year we decide upon our whole-school priorities for literacy and numeracy. This year, our literacy foci will be the higher-order reading skills of inference, deduction and synthesis. For numeracy, our whole-school foci will be on constructing and interpreting graphs. So that you can help support your child at home with these whole-school foci, we thought we’d pro-vide you with some information on some of the strategies and resources we use in school to help teach these.

    Higher-order Reading Skills

What is inference? Inference is the skill of exploring what is suggested by words, phrases and images. The types of questions that test inference skills are: What impressions do you get of John in this text? How does the writer present the issue of bullying?

What is deduction? Deduction is the skill of working something out with the information provided. The types of questions that test deduction skills are: From those that have sent between 1,000 and 2,500 troops, which country has sent the least?

What is synthesis? Fusing multiple elements, often from different areas, into something new (A+B+C=D). The types of questions that test synthesis skills are: What do you learn about Henry VIII from reading the text? How does Macbeth change in the play?

  • Here are some examples of questions your child might be asked to answer in class or in

an assessment to show their use of higher-order reading skills.

  • Interpreting and Constructing Graphs What types of graphs might my child be expected to construct? Subject areas across the school now expect pupils to be able to construct a range of graphs based on data they have collected or been given. The types of graphs pupils will be expected to construct include: Pictograms – pictures are used to represent the data. Bar Graphs – bars of equal width with varying height are used to represent data. Pie Charts – data is represented though proportions of a whole (pie) Line Charts – these can be used to show how data has changed over distance or time.

  • Interpreting graphs

TVA is a useful strategy pupils are encouraged to use when interpreting graphs.

We also encourage pupils to use the correct vocabulary when interpreting graphs.

  • Book of the Fortnight Llyfr Y Pythefnos

The Dead of Winter by Chris Priestley Michael Vyner recalls a terrible story, one that happened to him. One that

would be unbelievable if it weren't true!

Michael's parents are dead and he imagines that he will stay with the

kindly lawyer, executor of his parents' will . . . until he is invited to spend

Christmas with his guardian in a large and desolate country house.

His arrival on the first night suggests something is not quite right when he

sees a woman out in the frozen mists, standing alone in the marshes. But

little can prepare him for the solitude of the house itself as he is kept from

his guardian and finds himself spending the Christmas holiday wandering

the silent corridors of the house seeking distraction.

However, lonely doesn't mean alone, as Michael soon realises that the house

and its grounds harbour many secrets, dead and alive, and Michael is set

the task of unravelling some of the darkest secrets of all.

This book falls in the Horror & Supernatural Genre.

  • Answer - Numeracy Challenge

    1. 0 2. The next number is 13112221. Each number describes the previous number. Starting with 1, the second line describes it 11 (one 1). Then the third line describes 11 as 21 (two 1’s). Then the fourth line describes 21 as 1211 (one 2, one 1). This is the pattern. 3. 9 Minutes. Each path has an equal chance of occurring and if B or D are chosen, they will just add 8 or 2 minutes to the time because the rat must restart the maze . Time = (1/4)*5 + (1/4)*(8 + time) + (1/4)*(3) + (1/4)*(2 + time).
