EDITORIAL & FROM THE HIGH CHAIR 

The AGM held on March 2nd marked  the passing of  the  third  successful  year of our  fledgling Club. The meeting  passed  without  controversy  and  the  committee  remains  unchanged.  The  Minutes  and  the Chairman’s report have been circulated to members on email and those requiring hard copies will receive them with this newsletter. The excellent suggestion of a club library was made. It has been decided to start the  ball  rolling  as  ‘virtual’  library  in  which  you  the  members  are  asked  to  let  Duncan  Paton (dingles@telkomsa.net) know what MG related books you have, which you are prepared to  lend to other members and which you would loan or donate to the library. Duncan will index the list and the information will be available to all members. Ricky has kindly offered space at Knysna Motor Strippers where the library will be housed. To  start with, all other  club newsletters  including Safety Fast, and  the Classic Car Africa magazine will be kept there and once Duncan has compiled the list of books which members are prepared to share, they too will be housed there. A collection of Club memorabilia at the same site may be a logical next step. 

I have recently received the latest Moss Motors Parts and Accessories Catalogues for MGB and MG Midget and  their Restoration Tools Catalogue  for 2010. These are available on  loan and anyone wishing  to  see them should contact me. 

SAMCA has forwarded the following warning to those who have owned their cars for several years: 

SAMCA has been alerted to the fact the fact that with the introduction of the ENatis system, the old pink  vehicle  registration  form  is  no  longer  a  valid  registration  document.  Clubs  are  advised  to inform their membership that they should with immediate effect address this issue by applying for

a  duplicate  registration  document  using  the  appropriate  form.  In  order  to  obtain  the  duplicate registration form one must present oneself at the local registering authority. 

The implications of not changing the registration document are: 

1. Members cannot buy a car that is still registered with the old pink document.  2. Members cannot sell a vehicle that is still registered with the old pink document.  

The last‐Sunday‐of‐the‐month breakfast runs continue to be popular and the February outing to Old Nick’s was no exception with several GRMC members but, as usual, dominance by MGs. For the March noggin, the Parfetts kindly hosted a most enjoyable bring and braai at their spectacular home. A big thank you to them. 

We are advised that the ‘hype’ around the Soccer World Cup’ is hotting up. The extent of the influence of FIFA and their apparent arrogance never ceases to amaze me. I was astonished to read in ‘Thumbs Up’, the Johannesburg Centre’s newsletter, that they have had to reschedule some of their regular annual events to comply with  the  ruling  that no other events may be held during  the duration of  the World Cup. From a financial viewpoint to the country, one has to hope that the cost of hosting the event, and especially the billions spent on stadia, is warranted in respect of employment created, however temporary, and economic growth. Previous experience in other countries hosting major sporting extravaganzas raises doubt but time will tell. 

Also noted in the March 2010 edition of Thumbs Up in relation to their 40th Anniversary celebration is Keith Burton’s substantial contribution to that club as  its  first chairman. Well done, Keith; we are  fortunate to have you with your knowledge and experience in our midst. 

As I shall be on a bush camping trip in Botswana and Namibia for most of April and the beginning of May, I ask  to  be  forgiven  for  combining  the  April  and May  newsletters which will  be  distributed  as  early  as possible  in May. Another consequence of this  is that I shall miss Brian Davidson’s Karoo Tour. He has put enormous effort  into the organisation and  it promises to be a trip to remember. The tour  is almost  fully subscribed; if your name is not on his list, this is about your last chance to join the party. 

Also needing to be remembered  is the Cape Town Centre’s National  Indaba at Oudtshoorn. All members are  encouraged  to  attend. Please  contact  a  committee member  for entry  forms. While on  the  topic of Indabas, recently members of the committee with spouses visited Pine Lake Marina at Swartvlei to assess this as a venue for our Indaba in 2014. We are impressed with their set‐up and this will be by far the most suitable venue in this area at which to host the event. Although a long way into the future, we will need to start making arrangements within the next few months. We are pleased that Liesel Winter has agreed to be the secretary of the Indaba committee.

16th‐19th September – International Indaba in Oudtshoorn:  The committee believes that the following will be attending:  Cooper, Davidson, Frost, Henderson, Hewitt, Lyons‐Lewis, Lawson and Paton. We are hoping that many more will join the festivities especially as they will take place on our doorstep. 

HUSBANDS AND WIVES  Judy got married and had 13 children. Her first husband, Ted, died of cancer.  She married again, and she & Bob had 7 more children. Bob was killed in a car accident, 12 years later.  Judy again remarried,.... and this time, she & John had 5 more children.  Judy finally died, after having 25 children.  Standing before her coffin, the preacher prayed for her. He thanked the Lord for this very loving woman and said, "Lord, they are finally together."  Ethel leaned over and quietly asked her best friend, Margaret: "Do you think he means her first, second, or third husband?" Margaret replied;  "I think he means her legs, Ethel”.

A most enjoyable bring and braai was held on Saturday 20th March at the Parfetts’ beautiful home on the end of Leisure  Isle. The evening was made even more  spectacular by  the  stunning  sunset as  the breeze faded. I have  long maintained that this  is the most desirable property  in Knysna and this function  in their garden confirms that. A huge thank you goes to Ed and Jenny.

FAST FORWARD 

A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES OF FORMULA 1 BY PETER HOLLIS 

Another  season of  racing kicked off on  the 14th of March  in Bahrain. Fernando Alonso  claimed his  first victory  for Ferrari, with Filipe Massa  finishing 2nd to complete the Ferrari one‐two. Sebastian Vettel was fast  in the early stages of the race, but slowed after his compulsory pit stop due to spark plug problems, allowing  Alonsa, Massa  and  Lewis Hamilton  past,  finishing  4th. Michael  Schumacher’s  return  yielded  a respectable 6th position, after starting 7th, and being chased hard by Jenson Button in his Maclaren.  

The race in Bahrain was considered boring by many, with very little overtaking, and very similar lap times by the top cars. Arguably, this could be contributed to by the new rules, intended to level the playing field and allow  the smaller  teams  to be more competitive. The biggest change  is  the ban on  refueling during races. Drivers still have to pit to make use of both the dry weather tyre compounds. This means that the cars have to carry enough fuel to finish the race, with the fuel tanks enlarged from around 80 litres to over 250  litres.   As a result, the cars are  longer, and drivers will have to drive strategically to conserve brakes and  tyres. The minimum weight of  the cars has been  raised  from 605kg  to 620kg, originally  intended  to offset  the  penalty  suffered  by  larger  drivers  in  KERS  equipped  cars.  However,  by  mutual  agreement amongst  the  teams, KERS will not be used  in 2010,  allowing more  time  for  research  and development. Some smaller changes include narrower front tyres and a ban on wheel fairings.  

The final major change for 2010 is the revised points system. The winner receives 25 points, while 2nd and 3rd get 18 and 15 points. The next seven positions will score 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points respectively. 

2010 is the debut season for three new teams; Lotus, HRT, and Virgin. Lotus returns to Formula One racing for the first time since 1994 with an all‐new team, with the experienced Jarno Trulli and Heiki Kovalainen driving. HRT is a Spanish team founded by ex‐driver Adrian Campos, with Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok behind the wheel. Finally, after huge success in junior formulae, Manor Motorsport steps up to F1 as Virgin Racing, with  a  car designed,  tested  and  refined entirely digitally. The Virgin drivers  are Timo Glock  and Lucas di Grassi.  

The next race is in Australia on the 28th of March.
