New playeron the block

By Barry RigalHansa Narasimhan may not be a name you

know too well, but you will be seeing a lot more ofher soon.

Her team has reached the round of 8 in theWagar Women’s Knockouts. She served notice ofher skills after a robust bidding sequence on thisdeal from the first round of the event.

Irina Levitina opened 2NT with the North handand Hansa leaped to 6♦. East won the opening clublead by taking dummy’s king and returned a passivetrump. Hansa ran all her trumps but one, producingthe classic ruffing-squeeze ending:

♠ A J 9♥ A K♦ —♣ —

♠ 10 8 3 ♠ K Q 6♥ Q 7 ♥ J 10 5♦ — ♦ —♣ — ♣ —

♠ 7♥ 8 6 4♦ 4♣ –

East still had to make a discard, but whatevershe did, Hansa had her 12th trick by playing on thatsuit.

In order to become a top-class defender youmust get used to drawing inferences from the spotcards that partner plays. The following is a classicexample.

North led the ♥A (attitude) and when Southplayed the 2, North switched to a spade. Declarerwent up with the ace and played a second heart.

North won and reviewed the evidence. Southhad followed to the spade with the 2, which mightbe a singleton. On the second round of hearts, however, South had followed with the 5, the lowestoutstanding heart.

With a singleton spade, South would surelyhave played his highest remaining heart, and hewould also have done it with two spades and nohigh diamonds.

If the defenders play four rounds of diamondsstarting at trick four, declarer would have to guessvery well to finish three down.

So, watch those low cards!

Old-timers rememberFreeman the scorer

Dick Freeman is another super-successstory. Today’s players recognize Dick as a greatplayer, a key member of the team that hasdominated American bridge for the last decade orso. He has three world championships under hisbelt as well.

But what most players today don’t know is thatDick once was the king of bridge scorers. Nobodycould touch him at matchpointing or adding.Nobody could read his figures either, but it didn’tmatter. He was always in balance the first time, usually putting his sheet on the wall before anyoneelse had finished matchpointing.

Dick has always been good with numbers.Back in the days of the Quiz Kids radio show, theworld tuned in to see if he could handle that week’smathematical problem in his head when most of thelisteners couldn’t solve it with pencil and paper.Sometimes it took him a few seconds, but healways had the answer — most of the time almostimmediately.

When he got married, he put down his redpencil and became a star player. He won worldchampionships in 1995, 2000 and 2003, and hisexploits in North American tournaments includenumerous championships. He is one of the game’sfastest analysts – and not surprisingly he is almostalways right.

Beer Card handHave you ever heard of the Beer Card? The ♦7

is called the Beer Card under very specialcircumstances – when it wins trick 13 in asuccessful contract. When this happens, thedeclarer yells “Beer Card” and his partner must buyhim a beer.

Where did all this Beer Card stuff start? Well, the ♦7 plays a special role in a Danish game calledBoma-Loma. Partly because of this, bridge playersin Copenhagen were the first to use the Beer Cardterm. It became quite common and reached Londonby the Eighties. The term was imported to theUnited States by the American Junior team afterthey made a visit to Poland for a World JuniorCamp. Now Beer Card is a term used worldwide.

David Milton of Herndon VA earned a free beerfrom his partner on this deal.

1NT 2♠ All PassThat was quite a 1♠ opener by Milton, but of

course he was third hand. Yes, the opponents couldmake game, but this story is about a Beer Card. Anddon’t forget, declarer has to be successful in hiscontract. That doesn’t look too likely when you seethe North-South cards.

West led the ♥K and switched to the ♦J todummy’s king. Milton ruffed a heart with thedeuce, then crossed to the ♦K to ruff another heartwith the 3. He led a diamond to the 6, West pitchingand East ruffing with the 4.

East led a trump, and Milton went up with theace. He led still another diamond, ruffing with thejack. He called for dummy’s last heart and ruffedwith the 5, West winning with the trump queen.

West cashed the ♠K and Milton carefullydiscarded the ♦8. West was forced to cash the ♣Aand lead a club, so Milton won the ♣K. Then hetook trick 13 with the ♦7 and yelled “Beer Card.”

More Beer Card factsYou don’t have to score the Beer Card (the

♦7) as declarer. You’re entitled to call out “BeerCard” if you set an opponent’s contract andscore the final trick with the ♦7.

If you are declarer in a cold contract and godown because you try to score the Beer Card, you have to buy beer for the table.

Don Mamula wonders what happens if youscore a Beer Card on defense when you’redoubled and redoubled. “I think that calls for asix-pack,” he decided.

Good card readingBob Morris read the situation just right on this

deal from the Spingold. As a result he scored up hisvulnerable game.

Eisensteinwon with the king and was down to all spades. He ledthe queen, but Morris ducked. The next spade lead letMorris make both his king and his 10 for nine tricks.

Making a slamoff three aces

Don Mamula, chairman of the Board ofGovernors, had the thrill of making a slam missingthree aces. In fact he made an overtrick! The dealcomes from the Life Master-1500 Mini-SpingoldKnockouts.

Different kindof decision

Sometimes a penalty card gives you an addedoption. Sometimes that’s an advantage – sometimesit isn’t. Daniel Milton of Herndon VA had to makea choice on Monday.

The 4♣ bid showed a 12-15 raise with goodtrumps – at least two of the top three honors if afour-card suit, at least the ace or the king if a five-card suit. Milton, South, felt he was good enough tocuebid, and he wound up in the spade slam.

The opening club went to the king and ace, andhe thought about that for a minute. He thought if helater led the ♣9 and East had the 10 but didn’tcover, he could set up pitches for dummy’s hearts. He cashed the ace, queen and 10 of trumps as Westpitched two clubs. Then he led the ♣9, and hishopes plummeted when East discarded the ♥5. ButWest asked, “No clubs, partner?” and Eastproduced the ♣5 as his face turned slightly red.

Milton went through with his original plan, following low and losing to the queen. West returneda diamond and Milton was at the crossroads. Ofcourse he could finesse. If the finesse won he couldruff a diamond, cash his clubs to get rid of dummy’shearts, ruff a heart and get rid of his last heart on the♦A. He would wind up with three trumps, threeclubs, one heart, two diamonds, two diamond ruffsand a heart ruff – 12 tricks.

But the penalty card gave him another option. He could take the ♦A, ruff a diamond and lead aheart to the queen. If East had the king he couldn’tplay it – he’d have to play his penalty card. Thediamond finesse would no longer be necessary.

After giving the situation a good deal ofthought, Milton finally went with the diamondfinesse.

That didn’t work, but the penalty card playwould have. He was disappointed, of course, but hedropped by the Daily Bulletin office because hethought our readers might be interested in hisunusual story.

Determination pays offDon Prior of Manasquan NJ really wanted to

play in the Young Life Master-1500 Pairs, but hewasn’t eligible – he wasn’t a Life Master. But hewas almost anLM.

He hadanother desire– he was bornin New YorkCity so hewanted to winhis gold cardin New YorkCity. So hes t o p p e dplaying for sixweeks tomake sure hedidn’t go over300 points.

He came to the tournament early so he couldtake the director course, and suddenly he had anidea – he’d call his friend Richard Levendusky ofJersey Shore NJ and ask him to come to New Yorkto play with him.

So last Friday Levendusky roused himself outof bed in time to catch the 5:30 a.m. train to NewYork. They came in second in the morning sidegame, and suddenly Prior had satisfied one of hisdesires – he was an LM – and he could satisfy theother – he was eligible for the Young Pairs. Hecould play in a Life Master game on the same dayhe became a Life Master.

The story isn’t completely happy. They wereseventh overall after the first qualifying session, butthe second session was a disaster and they failed toqualify for the final.

But Prior is still going strong. He finished tiedfor fourth in Monday’s Open Pairs, partnered by hisgood friend Roger Lord.

Marshall your forces!Tournament Director Dave Marshall heard a

call for caddy, but there weren’t any around. Hewent over and told the table, “I have to watchmy step here – I’ve got to watch out for thatpowerful Caddies Union. But what can I do foryou?”

One of the players said, “I don’t know whatto tell you. I’m a labor lawyer.”

“In the old days, our bridge population wasrenewed by the families where the children learnedto play bridge with their parents. That no longer isthe case for many reasons, including such things asthe advent of TV and video games as well as thechanging lifestyles of young people. Our bridgecommunity is getting older and older.

“We should be aware of this danger. We wantour children and our grandchildren to enjoy bridgeas we do. That’s the reason teaching bridge atschool is essential for the long term.”

Damiani believes we must use the newtechnology, especially the Internet, to teach bridgeto young people. “We shouldn’t be afraid ofdeveloping a kind of ‘virtual’ club for them as I amquite sure they will join us once they have beenable to practice and feel confident in their ability.”

He calls the Internet a powerful tool forpromoting bridge because of how international andnational contests are being screened. “The Internetis a perfect tool when linked with video ortelevision.”

He is very happy that the international situationhas changed sufficiently that the United States willbe sending teams to the World Team Olympiad inIstanbul, Turkey. “I am happy to see that yourteams will be with us in Istanbul, thus showing theworld our solidarity and our determination to fightagainst those who wish to terrorize us.”

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both partnership cards must be identical. Both must include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only the Standard American Yellow Card andmay use only standard carding. This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequentround after convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director.

Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6 boardmatchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuinguntil the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+events with visible, real-time cameras. The imageswill be recorded and will be available for laterofficial inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session andparticipants’ behavior, ACBL has another source ofinformationn that may be useful in determiningfacts and settling issues arising from some types ofethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Thisprocedure is intended to assure everyone that theplaying field is level and that misbehavior will notbe tolerated.

CorrectionHospitality at this tournament is being capably

handled by Districts 3 and 24, not by any individualunits in the area.

How pleasant it is to hear a player call,“Director, please” – instead of an anguished“DIRECTOR!”

Why not extend that courtesy to ourcaddies? Don’t you think “Caddy, please” has arather nice sound?

Remember that New York is the first NABCfor some of our players –and it’s also the firstNABC for many of ourcaddies.

Roy WellandContinued from page 1

Stan TenchContinued from page 1

believe Welland is good enough to lead his team –Bjorn Fallenius, Michael Rosenberg, ZiaMahmood, Robert Levin and Steve Weinstein – tovictory in Turkey.

Says Bob Hamman, a member of the BermudaBowl champion Nick Nickell team: “Roy is a goodcompetitor. He’s technically sound and has workedreally hard, especially in terms of seeking out goodcompetition. He’s doing it all right.”

Teammate Zia is also complimentary: “(Roy)could be a bridge pro. He is by far the best playerwho sponsors teams. My only complaint is that ifwe go out to eat between sessions with Roy wehave to drink so much good wine that I come backfor the second session drunk, and if I have tochoose between IMPs and a bottle of $500 wine,I’m picking the wine.”

For his part, Welland strives to avoid anysemblance of immodesty, but he will allow that histable feel is pretty good, perhaps from all the yearsof playing poker, at which he was expert longbefore he took up bridge.

Interestingly, Welland might not have foundbridge if a regular poker game he played in had notbeen held in a bridge club.

Welland arrived in New York 23 years ago asan 18-year-old. He was living in Chicago at thetime. One day he and a friend decided they wouldspend New Year’s Eve at Studio 54, a famous discoin New York. Welland arrived in the city and neverleft.

Always a games player, Welland played chess, backgammon, poker and gin, among others.

One day he decided he wanted to get into theoptions trading business, but he didn’t have theright educational background.

He played poker regularly at a bridge club, andhis poker games often went on so long that hewould meet the bridge crowd setting up for theirgame in the morning. One day he was talking to thebridge group and told them of his desire to work onWall Street. One of them mentioned that a lot ofgood bridge players had been hired to trade options.

Welland immediately started kibitzing therubber bridge game at the Manhattan Bridge Club, and after a couple of months he felt he was ready toplay in the duplicate game. “I had a little bit of anadvantage,” Welland says, “because I had playedsimilar games. It wasn’t that difficult to pick up therudiments.”

During 1986, Welland was a regular player inthe Manhattan Bridge Club duplicate game, and heaccumulated such a pile of rating point slips – theold way of keeping track of club masterpoints – thatsomeone suggested he send them in to ACBLHeadquarters.

It turned out that his collection of rating pointslips amounted to 94 masterpoints, making him the1986 winner of the national Ace of Clubs rookiecategory.

After a couple of years of bridge play, Wellandwas finally offered a job on Wall Street.Unfortunately, he was due to start just about thetime of the stock market crash of October 1987. Hehad to wait until the following year to get started, but he has been enormously successful and nowruns his own company – Wilcris Trading, namedafter William and Christopher, the twin sons he andChristal Henner-Welland had seven years ago.

Once he started his options career, Wellandfocused on Wall Street rather than bridge, but in thesummer of 2000 he sponsored his first team in theSpingold.

By the fall of the following year, he was aNorth American champion – winner of theReisinger Board-a-Match Teams, arguably thetoughest event on the ACBL calendar.

Welland’s regular partner these days is BjornFallenius, a veteran player who representedSweden, his native country, many times ininternational competition.

He and Welland knew each other from rubberbridge games, and they have formed a toughpartnership over the last three and a half years.

Says Richard Schwartz, another tournamentveteran and sponsor: “He and Bjorn are one of thebest third pairs on any team in the country.”

Welland and Fallenius play a complex,transfer-based system they feel gives them adefinite advantage.

Says Fallenius of his partner’s bridge acumen:“He has a very good feeling for what is going on atthe table, so we can be more free in the bidding, andRoy is a good bidder.”

Welland has also shown a flair for card play, asillustrated by the following deal from the MixedTeams at the first Open European Championshipslast summer in Menton, France. Welland’ssensational card play helped his team win the eventin a star-studded field.

(1) Multi: weak two-bid in a major. (2) To play if East’s suit is spades. Welland’s 3NT was aggressive. Levin’s raise to

slam was, in context, normal. The problem wascoming to 12 tricks. East led the ♠J, which denieda higher honor. Welland took his only chance byplaying low from dummy. He was gratified to seethe ♠K pop up, but there was a lot more work to do.He played a heart at trick two: 2, 8, K, 7. Wellandthen ran five club tricks, on which East discardedtwo spades and West three hearts. When Wellandcashed the ♦K, he noted the fall of the 10 fromEast. Careful to unblock, Welland then played the♦9 to his ace, felling the queen. He returned todummy with the ♠Q to finesse against West’s ♦8 6for 12 tricks, plus 1440 and a 13-IMP gain.

“I’m willing to gamble,” says Welland, acknowledging that there are many similaritiesbetween bridge and poker. “There’s more poker inmy bridge game than in most people’s,” he says.

Welland says he and Christal don’t play muchtogether these days, but they did early in his bridgecareer. “She is a saint,” says Welland, noting thatthey have more than a dozen regional wins playingtogether.

Christal is a fine player in her own right. Shewas captain of the winning Open Swiss Teams atthe 2003 Spring NABC in Philadelphia – and she’son a strong team in the Spingold at this tournament:Mike Kamil, Swedish stars Peter Bertheau andFredrik Nystrom and Italians Claudio Nunes andFulvio Fantoni, reigning World Open Pairs champs.

Besides bridge and his family, Welland has akeen interest in the food business. He has afinancial interest in two New York restaurants –Hearth and Barbuto – and is a wine connoisseur(just ask Zia).

In the United States Bridge Championship inMemphis last month, the Welland team, playingfour-handed, made it to the final against the Nickellteam. Nickell won but opted to use the qualificationfor next year’s Bermuda Bowl instead of this year’sOlympiad, giving Welland and company the chance

for a world title.Even with that opportunity looming in the

future, Welland says, he has no trouble focusing onthe current challenge – defending his team’sSpingold championship.

“I take bridge one day at a time,” he says. “I tryto win my first match, and if I do I’ll try to wintomorrow’s match.”

Welland feels his team will have a good chancein Istanbul, and if they come home with the goldmedal, it will be only the second time the U.S. haswon the event. Says Welland: “Nothing would befiner than that.”

30 years, so he did all his directing on weekendsand during vacations. He moved East to Ottawa in1956, and he has especially enjoyed working in theMaritimes and northern Ontario. “The people are sosocial, so friendly, so enjoyable.”

Stan wistfully remembers the good old dayswhen directors used pencils instead of computers toscore. “It was more fun the old way, but I supposethe computers are faster.”

Directing is a great way to meet people and totravel, Stan said. “And I’ve so enjoyed workingwith such wonderful men who were my fellowdirectors – fellows like Johnny Wiser, MauryBraunstein, Harry Goldwater, Henry Francis, TomWeeks, Karl Marks, Karl Johnson, JerryFriedlander, Jules Jacobson, Jerry Prisyon, LouKelner, Mike Linah, Buddy Spiegel and RonnieRubin.

“Henry and I used to have a wonderful time inthe Maritimes. We’d race to finish our 25-topsheets, and we’d each have a rooting sectioncheering us on.”

Doing sheets was fun for Stan. “One time wewere doing a stanza 25-top where we scored thefirst half while the contestants played the secondhalf. One of the players – Hugh McLean who usedto play with Ron Andersen – bet us that we couldn’tget the first half in balance before play finished inthe second half. We eagerly took the bet. Then webet him we could finish by the 12th round. We wonthat one too. But when we offered a bet on the 11thround, Hugh refused. He had learned his lesson.”

Canada is a bilingual country, so at one pointStan was ordered to learn French because he was ahigh-ranking governmental official. He used hisFrench exactly once in his work, but his newlanguage has proved to be a big help indirectly –after all, he works a lot of tournaments in Quebec.

Now that he has retired, Stan works all theNABCs, so he is in frequent contact with all thefriends he has made through the years.

“I love directing,” Stan emphasized. “I haveenjoyed every minute of it.”

13 great yearsat 40 NABCs

By Nancy FoyJust the other day I realized that the New York

NABC will be the 40th NABC with which I’ve beeninvolved since I started working for ACBL in thesummer of 1991. There are a lot of things I trulyenjoy about my work, but the best part of my job withthe ACBL is the friends I’ve made.

I enjoy working with my buddies daily in ourheadquarters office in Memphis, and the tournamentdirecting staff is an added bonus. Over the past 13years, I’ve also made a lot of friends in the hotelindustry. Without question, though, the folks thathave really made my career special are thetournament and committee chairs that have becomemy friends over the years.

Four days after I signed on with ACBL, I went tothe Summer 1991 NABC in Las Vegas. It wasoverwhelming. I called home in tears every day, wondering how I would ever make it in this job. Thefirst tournament I really worked on was inIndianapolis in the fall of 1991. The bridge playersand volunteers were so kind to me. I can rememberthat I let the pressure get to me one evening andSharon Austin dragged me out to her car and took mefor a ride and let me air things out. Kathy Lindholmsaw how homesick I was and came downtown onThanksgiving Day to pick me up and take me back toher house for Thanksgiving dinner with her family.Kathy and Sharon play together at NABCs, and everytime I see them, I just want them to know how muchthey mean to me.

I’ve enjoyed working with Southern gentlemen.Larry Federico of New Orleans, Clay Hall ofBirmingham and Eric Snow of Houston are men I amproud to call my friends. They each had uniquechallenges at their NABCs. I never saw any of themget angry, not even frustrated, but I noticed every oneof them brought together a group of volunteerworkers who not only did the jobs they wereassigned, but they did the work and gave high praiseand loyalty to these men. These are guys you wantheading up your team.

I’ve made a few girlfriends over the years too.Penny Augustine of Toronto brings Timothy’s coffeebeans to me, just because she knows I like them, andI enjoy dinners with her and her husband Bob. JanNathan has her own company, but managed to chairthe Long Beach NABC last summer. She said she’dhire me, but I think she was just being nice. I alwayssave a hug for Martha McGhee when I see her.Martha was the chairman for the Orlando NABC in1998.

Believe it or not, some tournament chairs sign uptwice! I guess it’s like having a baby and you forgetthe labor pains. Patti Eber of Cincinnati, SteveCrutcher of Kansas City and John Marks ofPhiladelphia have all chaired two NABCs in the past13 years. Patti was so remarkable that her districtestablished an award in her name to be given tovolunteers whose dedication to the success of thegame deserves recognition. Steve and John bothhave me on their e-mail lists. Steve likes to sendalmost any kind of joke, but John (knowing I’m aboutthe only other right-wing conservative in all ofACBL) sends me Clinton jokes. Still does. And Istill think they’re funny.

I’ve worked with Margot Hennings from FallsChurch VA on two NABCs, and I’m betting we’llmake it three with the Summer 2009 NABC in

Washington, DC. Margot’s a lot of fun, but shesometimes intimidates me with her organizationalabilities. I have to watch what I say and do aroundher because, believe me, she’ll have a record of it!She knows she can call me for a favor any time sheneeds one.

Some of my friends are gone too soon. I missLouise Childs Freed, who lived in Los Angeles withher husband Gene when she died last November, buther real home was always in Dallas, where shechaired the 1997 Spring NABC. Other tournamentchairs still ask me for the menus of the late-night foodthey served in Dallas, now seven years ago. My ownmom died days before the Fall 2002 NABC inPhoenix. Marianne Spanier and Jill Miller co-chairedthat NABC and were so thoughtful and kind to me asI stumbled through their NABC. I see Marianne and“that cute Buddy” at most NABCs now, but Jill diedunexpectedly last year. The world is a better placebecause of Louise and Jill, and our game lost twospecial women.

As I prepare for my 40th NABC, I’m thinkingNew York is a perfect place to be. The day before thetournament started, I be celebrated my 25th weddinganniversary, so my husband and son were with me inthe Big Apple, and there’s no place more excitingthan Times Square, the “crossroads of the world.”Bill Rosenbaum and Jerry Goodman are co-chairs ofthe tournament.

These men are not all that much alike, except of

course, they both love bridge and both lend theiradministrative and leadership abilities to the game.Bill unsettled me a bit at first until I realized thatinstead of using what I thought was my Southerncharm, I should just give him the facts and move on.Jerry’s approach is a bit different from Bill’s and theywork together well with their complementary styles. It’s going to be a memorable 40th NABC for a lot ofreasons, and I’m hoping for a huge turnout.

Luckily for me, I’m not stopping at 40. I’mlooking forward to working with Jayne Thomas thisfall in Orlando. Every time we do a survey aboutNABCs, someone will write a note that we shouldtalk to Jayne and see how she does it in Florida. I toldher I’ll never be able to get out from behind hershadow.

Roni Gitchel of Pittsburgh has put together agreat team for the 2005 Spring NABC and hasalready raised nearly $100,000 in addition to thefunds ACBL provides for an NABC. I can remembercalling her a few years ago when we were concernedthat the new convention center in Pittsburgh wouldn’tbe finished by March of 2003, when Pittsburgh wasoriginally scheduled. Instead of being frustrated asone might have expected, Roni said she wanted whatwas best….and besides, it gave her two more years tomake sure the tournament was remarkable. I don’tthink she’s going to rest until she reads the greatreviews from Pittsburgh.

And Jack Feagin of Atlanta, another Southerngentleman, will be a repeat tournament chair with mewhen he heads up the Atlanta NABC next summer. He puts my feet to the fire on occasion, and he’llmake sure I do my job better than I did last time andthat players will thoroughly enjoy their visit toAtlanta next summer.

Because of the examples these and othertournament chairmen have been to me, I’ve becomemore involved in volunteer work in my church and inmy community. I’ve realized that by giving back, you get so much more.

If you haven’t volunteered to work at one of yourlocal tournaments or at an NABC, think about it. I’mlooking for more friends all the time.

Jan Nathan and Nancy Foy
