DentaldiseasesDental diseasesmay affect the teeth, the gums,
or other tissues and parts of the mouth. Dentaldiseases can cause much more serious
problems than a toothache; they can affect our
ability to chew, smile, or speak properly. Their
severity may range from a simple apthousulcer or a common tooth cavity, to oral cancer
These are among the most
common disease in humans and include dental
caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and manymore oral conditions.
The prevention, diagnosis, treatment and
rehabilitation of these diseases are the base to
the dentistry profession, in which

Dental diseases affect not only the teeth
but also the gums and tongue. Dental diseases
can cause a range of problems from a slighttooth ache, cavity, and ulcer to a more serious
oral cancer. The three most common of these
diseases are Dental Caries, Gingivitis, andPeriodontitis. These diseases can affect
speech, smile, ability to chew, and in some
cases even loss of tongue or teeth. Dental
Diseases can be prevented by taking propercare of your teeth. Brushing, flossing, and
regular visits to the dentist will help prevent
these diseases.

Dental caries
Dental caries are known as a cavity or tooth decay.Dental caries are an infection that causes destruction
to the hard tissues such as enamel, dentin, and
cementum. Bacteria is in the foods eaten that contain
sugars and starches that turn into acids which eat
away at the tooths structure that initially cause tooth
decay. Dental caries are a chronic disease that can be
prevented but shows mostly in 6 to 11 year oldchildren and 12 to 19 year old adolescents. 9 out of 10
adults are affected with some type of tooth decay.
Prevention includes good oral hygiene that consists of
brushing twice daily, flossing, eating nutritious meals,

GingivitisAnother common periodontal disease is Gingivitis. Periodontal
refers to the area the infection affects, which include the teeth, gums, and tissues surrounding the teeth. There is no exact
cause of gingivitis but there are many contributing factors
(Emedicinehealth). The number one thing that can cause
Gingivitis is due to the buildup of plaque on the teeth. If theplaque is not taken care of and continues to accumulate,
bacteria may begin to grow and this will cause the gingivitis
infection. There are many symptoms of Gingivitis; these include
bleeding, swelling, inflammation, and also a deep red color of
the gums (Emedicinehealth). Treatment of gingivitis isdependent on how severe and how far the disease has
progressed. If the disease is not too severe it is possible to be
treated with fluoride rinse and fluoride toothpaste to remove the
plaque, and kill the Gingivitis, but once the infection has

Periodontitis/or pyorrheais a set of inflammatory diseases affecting
the periodontium , i.e., the tissues that surround and support the teeth .
Periodontitis involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around theteeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loos
of teeth.Signs and symptomsIn the early stages, periodontitis has very few symptoms; and in many
individuals the disease has progressed significantly before they seek
treatment.
Symptoms may include:
Redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth, using dental floss or
biting into hard food (e.g. apples) (though this may occur even in gingivitis,
where there is no attachment loss)
Gum swelling that recursSpitting out blood after brushing teeth Halitosis
, or bad breath, and a persistent metallic taste in the mouth
Gingival recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth. (This may also
be caused by heavy-handed brushing or with a stiff tooth brush.)
Deep pockets between the teeth and the gums .Loose teeth, in the later sta es

There are several ways to treat periodontitis, depending on its severity.
The goal of periodontitis treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets of
bacteria and to prevent more damage. Treatment may be performed by a
periodontist, a dentist or a dental hygienist. Treatment is most successful
when you adopt a daily routine of good oral care.
Nonsurgical treatments
If your periodontitis isn't advanced, treatment can include less invasiveprocedures, including:
Scaling.Scaling removes tartar and bacteria from your tooth surfaces and
beneath your gums. It may be performed using instruments or an ultrasonic
device.
Root planing.Root planing smoothes the root surfaces, discouragingfurther buildup of tartar.
Antibiotics. The use of antibiotics to treat periodontitis remains open to
debate. Your periodontist or dentist may recommend using topical or oral
antibiotics to help control bacterial infection. Topical antibiotics are
generally the treatment of choice. They can include antibiotic mouth rinsesor insertion of threads and gels containing antibiotics in the space between
