Living information in Tainan - Reasonable living expense: Living costs (exclude dorm’s fee) for one month in Tainan

may range from NT$5,000 - 10,000 ($170 - 340 USD).

- Low crime rate: Due in part to its low crime rate and general safety, Tainan earned the title of one of Taiwan’s most livable cities in 2014.

- Cultural city and friendly people: Tainan is the historic and cultural capital of Taiwan, steeped in a long and proud Taiwanese tradition yet paradoxically is a progressive, forward-looking city of possibilities. The warm, hospitable, laid-back Southern Taiwanese culture sharply contrasts the region’s dual identity as a major high-tech industrial hub.

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) National Cheng Kung University is located in Tainan, Taiwan, and is ranked second among all the universities in Taiwan. Renowned for its world class engineering research, talented faculty, and promising students, NCKU has been one of the drivers of Taiwan’s economic miracle. In addition, NCKU’s Chinese Language Center, which is also ranked the second largest among all Chinese languages centers of national universities, provides rigorous language and cultural training to visiting scholars and students of all ages and abilities.

1. Study Tour Duration:

Two weeks.

2. Start/Finish Dates: Mar. 19th, 2016 to April 2nd, 2016.

3. Tuition and fees All tuition and fees are payable in New Taiwanese Dollars only. For the purposes of this brochure we are using the current (at time of printing) exchange rate of roughly 1USD=30NTD. The payment can be paid in US dollars but make sure the final amount matches the fee in NT dollars. As exchange rates are subject to fluctuation, please double-check the rate before making payment. Fees are calculated on there being a ten/twenty participants in the program. This includes all textbooks and activities. Fees are subject to yearly change, and there are discounts available for groups of twenty-nine (29) or more students. For details on each item in the package, please see the explanations below.

Note: i. For study groups consisting of a minimum of 15 students for at least two weeks, Taiwan MOE

may be able to provide a scholarship of NT$3,000 (approx. 90USD) per week, up to four weeks. However, the scholarship cannot be confirmed until a half month before the class starts. All fees should be paid two month before the class start.

ii. All fees are non-transferable and non-refundable. iii. For a group of 10 students, we will provide free dormitory for a leading teacher. The rental bus

transport fee from the airport will be also covered. iv. The rent to stay in the Ching-Yeh Dorm on Campus is cheaper. However, On-Campus

Accommodation is subject to availability. v. The second teacher coming with students need to pay dormitory, transportation and meals by

him/herself. 4. Curriculum Outline:

Small Group Classes - 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. - Students will be divided into 2 to 3 classes

according to their placement test scores. Every class has 5 to 8 people.

- Taught by professional and experienced teachers of CSL.

- Main textbook: Far East Everyday Chinese or Practical Audio-Visual Chinese.

- Hanyu pinyin Romanization and traditional characters are used as the principal written codes of instruction. However, the course can be taught using simplified characters if students prefer.

Tutorial Classes - 1 hour per day, Monday to Friday. - 2-3 tutorial classes are designed to co-ordinate with class content, and help students to solve

language problems they have encountered both in and out of class. Cultural Classes and Activities

- Three 2-3 hours sessions weekly - Cultural Classes offered include Chinese Painting（國畫）, Chinese Kung Fu（中國功夫）,

Stamp Engraving（篆刻）, Chinese Cuisine (美食文化), Tea Ceremony （茶道）, Karaoke（唱卡拉 OK）, 布袋戲(Hand Puppet), and Chinese instruments experience（中國樂器體

驗）, etc. - Cultural Exchanges include visits to local high schools and interactions with student

associations of National Cheng-Kung University. Cultural Excursions and trips - Tour of Tainan’s Historic Sites - Visiting a local school - Visiting Night Market - One day trip to Sun-Moon Lake Language Exchange

- Evening activities include night Market, Tea Ceremony, led by teachers and students of local high school

- Students are welcome to stay before class to use the computers or study individually. We have a computer-based Chinese-Learning program available to all students, and teachers are available to answer questions.

5. Detailed Fee Structure:

1) Administration Fee Our office charges a separate administration fee of $1,000NTD (approx. $33USD).

2) Insurance Fee: Accident only $532NTD (approx. $18USD) for two weeks.

3) Transportation Charge:

NOTE: All costs are per person (for the ten/twenty participates’ group); however, detailed costs are one-way per person. The cost include staff member to meet the group at the airport.

From Taoyuan International Airport to Tainan:

Rent: ~ $6,700NTD (approx. $223USD) for a month. ((the stay less than one month will be rounded up to one month).

Estimate electricity is NT$200 /$7USD (Any unused portion will be refunded). Extra electricity costs $5.5NTD/$0.18USD per kilowatt/hour. Cooking is not allowed inside the rooms.

II. Meals: Lunch $1,080NTD (approx. $36USD) for 9 days

Lunch boxes: NT$120 x9 days=NT$1,080

We are able to provide lunch boxes for students during weekdays for the duration of the course (Monday to Friday). Please note that these are traditional hot Taiwanese lunchboxes with rice, noodles, meat and vegetables. Meals will differ daily, but students will be unable to choose their meal. However, dinners are not provided. Food can be found easily and cheaply at the restaurant on the campus or around the university.
