Sir A. T. Ngata (Tairawhiti) BA, LLB, LittD, Tai Mitchell (Rotorua),Dr Pei Te Hurinui Jones OBE (Taumarunui), William Tukere Te Anga (Whanganui) and Kingi Te Ahoaho Tahiwi OBE (Otaki)These were the leaders that founded our constitution of the NZ Maori Lawn Tennis Association in 1926 at Rotorua.
Add to those great leaders carrying on the dream – Kiingi Koroki, Te Puea Herangi CBE, Sir Turi Carroll OBE,KBE, (Wairoa) Sydney Carroll and Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu ONZ, DBE, OStJ, (1975-2006).
This was further enhanced by the many great leaders representing their rohe – Sir Hepi Te Heuheu KBE (Taupo-nui-a-Tia), Sir James Henare KBE DSO (Taitokerau), Wetini Hotu (Maniapoto), Hoeroa Marumaru (Whanganui), Takurua Tamarau (Ruatoki), Ruihi Wehipeihana (Manawatu), E Edwards (Taranaki), Sam Mitchell (Rotorua).Current Patron, Kiingi Tuheitia KStJ, GCCT, KCLJ. - To whom we are grateful for his staunch support over recent years. Which has stabilised our recent tournaments in Hamilton!
Not forgetting our many past tennis champions of yester-year; Dr Maui Pomare, Pei Jones, Phil & Eddie Howell, JB Smith, Peter Smith and Son Barry (x11 times Maori singles champion), Bill & Fred Keys, Letty Karauti, Pita Kaua, Mary-Ann Dewes, our most famous Wimbledon and international players Ruia Morrison and Kelly Evernden and world 70+ singles champion Mose Harvey.
The tournament following Christmas was launched in an atmosphere of remembrance and celebration attended by many of our famous men and woman champions of past and recent years; Ruia Morrison and Taini Jamieson. Many past champions David Goldsmith, Ronnie Farrell, (still playing after 62 years) Wiki Bidois (nee) White, Archdeacon Bill Kaua attended the Powhiri, and all 4 played in the famous 1954 NZMLTA tournament in Dunedin.

Still reminiscing about their 3 day boat trip from Gisborne to Dunedin with some of the other legends that attended that trip – Bubs Wehi, Mose Harvey and Mackie Herewini (the famous All Black of the 60s & 70s) and the “capturing” of the famous Ink Spots entertainers from the USA, who were performing in Dunedin at the time.
Past Men’s champion in 1965, 66, and 67 Joe Malcom, and many others appeared over the three days, enjoying the recollections and whakawhanaungatanga, as did Tainui kaumatua Taki Turner.
Witnessing the opening ball hit by Ruia Morrison, to the outstanding tennis played over the following three days, from the youngest, 7 year old Cruz Bryce, to the oldest, 83 year old Peter Thomas.
The standard was excellent and made so by the appearance of recent and former champions; Kyle Butters (USA), Shelley Bryce (nee Stephens) Eru Lyndon, Maui Hudson, Gay Carson (nee McManus) Catherine Costain, Tracey O’Connor, Luci Barlow, and TK Williams.
Appreciation goes to the large roopu from Australia, Whanganui, Rotorua and Tamaki Makaurau that helped the record number of entries, which was a notable 41% increase.
The results of the tournament are recorded in this booklet and also appear on our AMTA website.
We record our gratitude to all the generous sponsors of the tournament.
Congratulations to the 4 recipients of the Nga Purapura Trust grants;Brooke Kenny, TK Williams, Logan Nathan and Kalais Going.
The tournament received and is still receiving many congratulatory remarks for the positive message it sends out to our Māori community and the public at large.
