NAN CHIAU PRIMARY SCHOOL 南侨小学 AUG Dear Parents, Last month, NCPS celebrated Racial Harmony Day and students participated in the various fun activities planned for them. Teachers and students came to school dressed in beautiful costumes and shared more about one another’s traditions and cultures. Such celebrations provide a wholesome and enriching environment for the students to foster meaningful and long-lasting social relationships with their peers from different races and religions. It is also the perfect launch pad to kick-start the upcoming National Day’s celebrations that we are looking forward to. As future leaders of Singapore, it is imperative that our students develop their confidence in all they undertake. They also ought to understand that as a society, relationships are important. By developing a dynamic social circle in school, our students gain confidence in collaborating well with others. Riding the waves of preparation for tests in life, overcoming difficulties and weaknesses and learning to shine in their areas of strengths require lots of grit and resilience. Friends provide the encouragement and motivation for one another to continue to strive in all they do. This year’s National Day theme pays honour and homage to the older generation who have displayed the most inspiring confidence in working together to overcome tumultuous obstacles, and thus contributed to the success of our nation-building. It is our hope that NCPS students will emulate the bond and strong social relationships that our older generation has. NCPS students shall emerge as an undivided generation with an indomitable spirit who will face any obstacle confidently and courageously. Road Safety For students and parents/guardians walking to the school:The safety of students using roads leading to and from the school is the responsibility ofall. We need motorists to play their part by slowing down as they approach the vicinityof the school. Please adhere to traffic rules and reinforce the importance of road safetyat home. Our parent volunteers, staff and security guards will be deployed to facilitatethe flow of traffic and reinforce road safety behaviour. We seek your understanding incooperating with them.*Students to use the appropriate traffic light and pedestrian crossing to enter the schoolthrough the school gates A, B or C.*Remind your child not to use mobile phones or other electronic audio devices whencrossing the road. Primary 4 Museum-Based LearningOur Primary 4 students embarked on a Visual Art learning journey to NationalGallery Singapore as part of Integrated Learning specific connections with SocialStudies. The objective is to provide an authentic context for the learning of localart as part of students’ understanding of Singapore’s heritage.

SYF Art Exhibition

The Singapore Youth Festival Art Exhibition, in its 51st year this year, celebratesthe artist in every child. It showcases children’s creative ideas, personalaspirations and hard work put into artistic expressions. This year’s theme “Artistand Citizenship” highlights the artist’s role in effecting change in society. OurPrimary 3 and Primary 4 Art Club members represented the school at SYF ArtExhibition and obtained Certificate of Recognition. Their artwork wereshowcased at the National Museum in July.

The NCPS Basketball Friendly matches were played bythe Primary 4 to Primary 6 classes between 9 to 11 July.Every team displayed great sportsmanship. We wouldlike to congratulate the players from P4IT, P5RP andP6IT for winning the finals. They experienced severalinteresting activities such as tyingknots and lashing, outdoor cooking,planning for Wide Game and hikingto Singapore Quarry.

Calling for E-Wastes! E-Waste Collection DriveWhat are e-wastes? E-wastes are electronic products which are spoilt or no longerin use. As part of the school’s initiative to go green, the school is having a collectiondrive from 22 July to 16 August for small and medium e-wastes such as thefollowing:• broken/spoilt wires, chargers and ear

phones/pieces• old/spoilt telephones (not smart phones)• old/spoilt calculators• old/spoilt electronic dictionaries• spoilt thumb drive/hard drive which

does not contain any files or documents

If you have any of the above unused items at home, please get your child to placethem in the white box labelled “Recycling Bin for E-WASTES” outside the GeneralOffice. We look forward to your support in working hand-in-hand to care for ourenvironment.

Prefects’Investiture

On 18 July, our school held the Prefects’Investiture. The Prefects’ Investiture is a ceremonyto recognise the prefects’ leadership efforts inserving the school and upholding our core values.To mark the occasion, the graduating prefects fromPrimary 6 presented the prefect ties to the newprefects.The new head prefect and vice-head prefect werealso unveiled that day. They are Sanjit Vetriselvanfrom Primary 5DL and Chua Xin Yu, Cherilynn fromPrimary 5IT respectively. The ceremony ended withSanjit leading the prefects in the recitation of theprefect pledge to renew their promises to serve theschool community to their best abilities.

Malay Cultural Week cum Hari Raya CelebrationA week of exciting activities was held from 1 to 5 July. Some of the highlights wereketupat weaving and making a “tanjak” (a Malay headgear). They were treated to Malaytraditional snacks such as “roti kirai” and “kuih Dahlia” and a Gamelan performanceduring recess. The climax of the week was the Hari Raya concert performance during theassembly where the significance of the celebration and its traditions of Hari Raya werehighlighted. Everyone took part in a mass dance at the end of the concert. Students alsogot to try out several Malay traditional games such as “gasing, lereng and tapak kuda”.

This term, the students wereintroduced to tangrams duringMath Play@Recess. They areplaced together to create avariety of different images andare great tools for learning andexploring geometry, area,perimeter and fractions. Usingtangrams helps students developspatial skills and critical thinking.The students were challenged toform as many animal shapes asthey could with the templatesprovided by using their owncreativity.

Primary 5 Cultural Awareness

Programme (CAP) trip

On 26 May, our Primary 5 students went on theCultural Awareness Programme (CAP) to Xi’an andSuzhou. During the trip, the students went forlearning journeys to various cultural monuments,such as Tiger Hill, Hanshan Temple, HumbleAdministrator’s Garden, Emperor Qinshihuang'sMausoleum Site Museum, Giant Wild Goose Pagodaand Huaqing Palace. They had a valuable learningexperience, interacting with the local students ofSuzhou Science and Technology Town ForeignLanguage School and Xinzhi Primary School,exchanging cultural experiences and knowledge.

The Xi’an CAP trip was an enjoyable one. We went to many iconic places. The most memorable one was the Terracotta Warriors exhibition. The feeling of travelling with friends was really different from travelling with family. I learnt to be an independent and responsible person.- Seraphina Ang P5DL

“I enjoyed the Suzhou trip because of their cuisines and the places of interest. One of my

favourite cuisines is the squirrelfish. I was fascinated by its squirrel-like body. My

favourite place of interest was the Silk Factory. I had an unforgettable experience touching a

Our Primary 5 BiCEP students joined theirBiCEP peers from the other four SHHK PrimarySchools on the BiCEP Overseas ImmersionProgramme to Fujian, Xi’an and Taipei. Duringthe overseas cultural immersion, studentsvisited places of historic interest and culturalheritage and tasted many unique localdelights. During the trip, students also had theopportunities to forge bonds with fellowBiCEP peers and make friends with localstudents when they visited the local schools.The Overseas Immersion Programmebroadens students’ horizons, increases theirhistorical and cultural knowledge, buildsstudents’ self-independence, self-disciplineand cultivates teamspirit.

Primary 2 Learning Journey

@ HortPark

Our Primary 2 students had alearning journey to the HortPark inthe first two weeks of July. As anextension of an outdoor lessonconducted during PAL (Programmefor Active Learning), the objectiveof the learning journey is to allowstudents to appreciate the natureand learn how to care for theenvironment. The students,teachers and parent volunteerswere led by experienced guidesfrom National Parks Board.They had anenriching and meaningfullearning experienceabout the differenttypes of plants andinsects found at the park.

On 2 July, our Primary 3 studentswent on an enjoyable ChineseTheatrical Experience. Theywatched a well-known Chinesechildren tale “The Prince and thePauper”. The objective of theTheatrical Experience was tofacilitate exposure to Chineseculture and in the process, enablestudents to learn theatre etiquette.

Interactive Heritage Trail (IHT)to Kampong Glam

Our Primary 3 students had theopportunity to experience aninteractive trail to Kampong Glamusing mobile learning devices inearly July. It was an enrichingexperience for them as they learntmore about the Arab and Malaycultural practices as well as theIslam religion. It was the first timemany had the opportunity to visitSultan Mosque and they also learntthat there are different perfumesfor men and ladies.

The Primary 4 BiCEP studentsjoined their BiCEP peers from theother four SHHK Primary School forthe SHHK BICEP Language andCultural Camp conducted bySingapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts& Cultural Troupe. Our Primary 4BiCEP students immersedthemselves in the Chinese languageand culture through dramaactivities, colloquial languageusage, storytelling, games, soundrecording sessions and otherinteresting activities.

NE ShowOur Primary 5 students went to the Padang for theNational Education Show on 13 July. As part of thenation’s Bicentennial celebration, our students were givena special treat with all the impressive performances andfireworks on display. They enjoyed themselves fully andcherished the opportunity to bond as a level and as anation.

School visit from Xi’an Xinzhi Primary School, China and Xinguang Elementary School, Taiwan

Nan Chiau Primary School welcomed thedelegation of 44 students and 3 teachers fromXi’an Xinzhi Primary School on 4 and 5 July.This marks the 5th year we have hosted themon their overseas immersion trip to Singapore.We also welcomed the delegation of XinguangElementary School’s Principal, 6 teachers and25 students from Taiwan on the same day.Our Primary 4 students had an enrichingexperience interacting with their Xinzhi andXinguang buddies during their classroomexperiences. The school was also treated aheart-warming performance presented byXinzhi and Xinguang students during assemblyon 4 July. We look forward to seeing ourXinzhi friends and strengthening ourfriendship when we visit them in Xi’an, China,next year.

Racial Harmony Day

The theme for Racial Harmony Day this year is“The Singapore Connection”. Through thevarious activities organised for students from22 to 25 July, they learnt about the culturesand traditions of the different races as well asthe importance of Racial Harmony Day.

Students had the opportunity to participate ininteresting activities with their buddy at thebooths during recess, which were manned byparent volunteers and CCE Ambassadors. Theydesigned a cohesive traditional costume withtheir buddy, played the traditional games ofAeroplane Chess, Five Stones, Snake andLadders and Happy Family card game, anddesigned their own traditional games. Toconclude the event, a performance was putup by Interaction Arts & Drama Networkduring the assembly programme, wherestudents were engaged and immersed in theart form and celebrated similarities of thehuman race through the dramatic liveperformance and interaction.
