‘let’か‘make’のどちらかを選んで、先生に学生時代についていくつか下の質問を

聞いてみましょう。3番と12番は‘let’と‘make’のどちらを使ってもよいです。

Getting to know your teacher and classmates:

Did your parents (let / make) you... when you were in school?

回は、“Do your parents (let / make) you...”

た、‘when you were in school’ を言う必要はありません。“Yes, they do / No, they don’t” で回答しできればもう少し詳しく説明してみましょう。

My name is Jenny Lin. I’m a second genera-

tion Taiwanese American. My parents came to Amer-

ica in 1981, two years before I was born. My mom

was a typical Taiwanese mother: very, very strict. Chi-

nese mothers believe that school is the most impor-

tant thing. My mom never let me bring home a grade

lower than an ‘A’. An ‘A minus’ was a bad grade. After school, she made

me do math and spelling drills for two hours. After that, I had to practice

the violin for three hours, even on weekends or during vacation. She

wouldn’t let me stop practicing until I could play perfectly.

My childhood was different from other kids’. My mother didn’t let

me watch TV or play video games, she never let me spend the night at a

friend’s house or have a play date, and she didn’t let me join any clubs at

school. The only activities she let me do were those where I could win a

prize, and that prize had to be the first prize. One time when I was in ele-

mentary school, I won second prize in a spelling contest. My parents were

there. They were so disappointed in me. My father told me never to em-

barrass him like that again.

Many people think that my parents were too strict, but I don’t think

so. Chinese parents, especially Chinese mothers, are different from

Western parents. In America, if a child is doing poorly in school, the par-

ents will most likely blame the teacher. But Chinese parents blame only

their children. If I got a bad grade on a test, my mother sided with the

teacher, never with me. She said that it was my fault and made me study

harder. She believed in me and expected only the best from me. My

mother never let me give up because she knew that I could be great.

1. My parents made me wear a tuxedo. (I’m not happy.)

2. My boss made me work late at night. (I’m not happy.) A: What makes you sad, Joey?

B: A rainy day makes me (feel) sad. C: What makes you feel happy, Stacy?

D: My cat, Nana Chibi, makes me (feel) happy.

A/Bの会話の‘make’は好ましくない意味(makes me sad)ですが、C/Dの会話では、

What makes you (feel)... 1. happy? (A sunny day) makes me happy. How about you?

2. sad? (Seeing a homeless animal) makes me feel sad. How about you?

3. angry? (Smokers) make me angry. How about you?

4. frustrated? (Bad traffic) makes me feel frustrated. How about you?

5. embarrassed? (A bad grade) makes me embarrassed. How about you?

6. excited? (A baseball game) makes me feel excited. How about you?
