Kibaki was born in 1931 in Gatuyaini village, Othaya division of Kenya's then Nyeri District, now Nyeri ounty ! "e is the youngest son of Kikuyu #easants Kibaki G$th$n%i and &eresia an%ik(! &hough ba#tised as )*ilio +tanley by talian *issionaries in his  youth, he h as been known as -wai Kibaki throughout h is #ublic life!.3/ 0a*ily oral history *aintains that his early education was *ade #ossible by his *uch older brotherinlaw, 2aul -uruthi, who insisted that young -wai should go to school instead of s#ending his days graing his father's shee# and cattle and babysitting his little ne#hews and nieces for his older sister!Kibaki turned out to be an e4e*#lary student! "e attended Gatuyain$ +chool for the 5rst two years, where he co*#leted what was then called +ub 676 and sub 686 the e:uivalent of standard one and two or 5rst and second grade;! "e later %oined Kari*a *ission school for the three *ore classes of #ri*ary school! "e later *oved to -athari +chool now Nyeri "igh +chool; between 19<< and 19<= for +tandard four to si4, where, in addition to his acade*ic studies, he learnt car#entry and *asonry as students would re#air furniture and #rovide *aterial for *aintaining the school's buildings! "e also grew his own food as all students in the school  were e4#ected to do, and earned e4tra *oney du ring the sch ool holidays by working as a conductor on buses o#erated by the defunct Othaya 7frican 8us >nion! 7fter Kari*a 2ri*ary and Nyeri 8oarding #ri*ary schools, he #roceeded to -ang'u "igh +chool where he studied between 19<? and 19@A! "e #assed with a *a4i*u* of si4 #oints in his 6O6 level e4a*ination!.</ nBuenced by the veterans of the 0irst and +econd orld ars in his native village, Kibaki considered beco*ing a soldier in his 5nal year in -ang'u! "owever, a ruling by the hief colonial secretary, alter outts, which barred the recruit*ent of the Kikuyu, )*bu and -eru co**unities into the ar*y, #ut #aid to his *ilitary as#irations! Kibaki instead attended -akerere >niversity in Ka*#ala, >ganda, where he studied )cono*ics, "istory and 2olitical +cience, and graduated best in his class in 19@@ with a 0irst lass "onours Degree 87; in )cono*ics!.</  7fter his g raduation, Kibaki took u# an a##oint*ent a s 7ssistant +ales -anager +hell o*#any of )ast 7frica, >ganda Division! During the sa*e year, he earned a scholarshi# entitling hi* to #ostgraduate studies in any 8ritish >niversity! "e conse:uently enrolled at the #restigious Condon +chool of )cono*ics for a 8!+c! in #ublic 5nance, graduating with a distinction ! "e went back to -akerere in 19@ where he taught as an 7ssistant Cecturer in the econo*ics de#art*ent until 19=A!.</ n 19=E, Kibaki *arried Cucy -uthoni, the daughter of a hurch -inister,  who was then a secondary sc hool "ead & eacher !.</
