Teres something to be said aboutbeing in a band with your amily.

While or many people thissomething might not be too positive,Alvin Lee o the Te Lee B oys doesntsee himsel perorming any other way.

No matter what, youre stillamily, he says.

Te three brothers, Alvin Lee(guitar), Derrick Lee and KeithLee (vocals), along with their threenephews Roosevelt Collier (pedalsteel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (seven-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums)are the entire band.

Alvin Lee isnt the oldest o theamily, but he seems to take on animportant leadership role. Te bandand those who know him best callhim Uncle Al.

All our lives weve helped raisethem, he says reerring to the youngermembers o the amily. We have littleissues, but we always love each other.

Te inspiration behind their wildly energetic, sacred-steel musicis ounded in the church and ueledby the death o Alvin Lees ather andhis late brother Glenn Lee, who usedto play the main instrumentthepeddle steel guitar.

Teir deaths inspired me tocontinue music, Alvin says.

    Ater playing music growing

up and then deciding he wantedto spread his music urther, Alvinlearned booking and the business sideo music rom Robert Stone o FolkAlliance in Florida, which showcasesmusic in Jacksonville.

Te Lee Boys have now toured widely. In 2007, they perormedor more than 250,000 music ansat estivals throughout the UnitedStates.

Tey have played with many othersacred steel artists and were invitedto perorm on the recent albumPalmystery o one o the greatestliving bass players, Victor Wooten.

Recently, Alvin Cordy Jr., the bassplayer, took two months o rom theband to play in Japan with RobertRandolph.

Tis year Te Lee Boys playedBonnaroo to great success, Alvin says.

Te estival Web site said ans oTe Lee Boys described them in theollowing ways: exhilarating, energetic, exciting, reeing un, spirited, soululand thrilling.

Ater their 2006 perormance at theChicago Blues Festival, the Chicago-

Sun imes compared to Jimi Hendrixsaying that their music,May be what Jimi Hendrix had in

mind with his grand plan or electricsky church music. Part RobertRandolph, part Holmes Brothers, theMiami quintet sang the praises while

whipping the crowd into a renzy with hypnotic grooves, innovativepedal-steel/lead guitar interplay andunky rhythms.

Sacred steel is a type o musicdescribed as an inspired, unique ormo Gospel music with a hard-driving,blues-based beat. Te musical genreis rooted in Gospel, but inused withrhythm and blues, jazz, rock, unk,hip-hop, country and ideas romother nations.

Alvin Lee believes he and hisamily members have a mission totouch people through their music andshare it with the world.

Te rst time y Manning o TeBearoot Hookers came to Athens, he

went downtown to check out somemusic at the Athens Human RightsFestival.

He wandered to College Avenueand witnessed im Conley o thenow-broken up, party band FuzzySprouts jumping rom the roo o TeGrill onto a stage below.

From this moment, he knewAthens was a pretty cool town, andhe knew it would accept his un andunique personality.

I never claim to be the best guitarplayer or the best singer, he says overthe phone with a simple honesty. I tryto entertain, and thats what a lot opeople in Athens are tryi ng to do, like

im Conley did (in the 1990s).While the members o Te Bearoot

Hookers have roots in Southern smalltowns, like Waycross, they are based inthe college town o Athens, Ga.

Te best part about Athens isthat theres always a song going onsomewhere, Manning says.

And, especially or him, thatsalways true. He began the songwritingor the band and writes songs almosteveryday, which he oten keepscrunched up in his pocket.

Not all o his songs are good, headmits, and most o them dont make

any sense.Ater three years o upheaval rom

new marriages and large purchases ohouses and bookstores, Te Hookershave about seven songs ready or a newalbum that Manning tentatively callsDouble-Wide Revival.

He says the new CD might be atheme album or even a double-CD,

with songs only about new lie andnew birth.

Most o the seven recent songswere written by Jon onge, the bassplayer.

Jon (onge) wrote about 60 lovesongs, and hal o them are crazy crap,Manning says. But the act that he

was that inspired is kinda cool. While Manning and onge are all

or quantity, Mark Dureld believes inquality o songwriting.

Hell go months without writinganything, and then hell come up withthis amazing song, Manning says.Hes sneaky.

Overall, a Bearoot Hookersperormance is something not oeredby other artists.

Manning says they once had astretch o 17 shows where at least one

woman fashed them. And then guys started going

topless, he says with a slight sadnessin his voice.

Being unique themselves, the bandoten attracts interesting people alongtheir tours.

One hardcore an named Bluehas recorded every live show excepttwo, Manning says.

Because o a request by Blue, TeHookers once perormed at a nursinghome.

Tey were dancing and sweatingand coughing, Manning says.

A the end o the night, one 98-year-old woman named Ellen wantedto leave with them, and a song Readyto Ride was born.

Whether its being fashed by women or entertaining elderly,Manning and Te Hookers have a wayo creating excitement, and surely they

    wont back down anytime soon.

At the end o any show outsideo Athens, Te Incredible Sandwichmembers like being homeless, ormore accuratelyhotel-less. Teyll sitaround and nd someone willing tooer up an extra room, or a couch or aclean bit o carpet space.

We always manage to nd people,Matt McKinney (lead guitar, vocals)says. But the worst part is that youmeet people and have to leave so soon.

For Te Sandwich, couch surng isa good way to make riends who willremember the band the next time ittumbles into town.

Tis amiliarity is also whatMcKinney hopes to achieve throughhis songwriting.

I try to write something peoplewould understand, he says. I a songis about a problem, thousands canidentiy with it.

Writing since the age o 16and enriched by a degree in musiccomposition, he puts a remarkableamount o thought into each o hissongs.

We dont really jam, McKinneysays, even though Te Sandwich isoten called a jam band. Chancesare that Ive written all that out. Itmakes no sense to me to jam withoutthought.

He grew up admiring the guitarsolos o Te Allman Brothers Band, and then started listening to Wilco andRadiohead in college.

    I have a pop-esque writing style,with a 18-year background in jamming,he says.

Te band, as it is now withMcKinney, Kevin Juneau (bass guitar),Damian Kapcala (keyboards) andRackley Davis (drums and vocals) hasonly been together or ve months.

McKinney says the current quartetis hitting a new stride and reaching anew realm o thinking.

Something must be working sincethe band received the 2009 FlagpoleAward or Upstart o the Year.

For McKinney, the true testamento a band is staying real to who you are.

I try to be true to mysel as a writerand a musician, he says, expressing his

dislike o the limiting labels sometimesput on artists. I just want to be me andthe band to be the band.

McKinney is a big an o lots osound and collaborating. He hopes toeventually add another guitarist andmaybe even a percussionist.

A ull-length album is in theworks. He says it will likely be around80 minutes with 10 long songs oconstantly moving and owing sound.

Our music makes you boogie-woogie, McKinney says.

I youve seen Te Sandwichperorm live, you know their musicmakes people dance. Especially inAthens, Te Sandwich knows how todraw a crowd.

Supported by a tight-knitcommunity, St. Simons Islandwherethe band was in residency in Julyeels like home to McKinney.

With their unpretentious attitudes, Te Sandwich members are likely ashappy on a ans couch as they would bein a penthouse suite.

rey Wright leads a lie o music, which is somethingthat he never envisioned or himsel even as a music mi-nor in college.

He met the members o his musical groups in during aUniversity o Georgia jazz improvisational class, and it allcame together somehow, he says.

Wright will be perorming as part o his rio with MarcMiller (upright bass) and Marlon Patton (drums, alsoplays with Squat) during Mule Fest.

Wright also perorms solo and co-ounded the award-winning jazz band Squat.

Te rio is more about setting the mood. Its more ex-

pressive, Wright said. Squats all about having un andentertaining. Its dance music.

Te rio will play original songs rom their recent CDTinking Out Loud, as well as jazz interpretations o Ra-diohead and olk rock singer Nick Drake.

Back in the day, jazz was all about re-interpreting pop-ular songs, Wright says, pointing to the music o GeorgeGershwin as an example.

Te rios new CD was co-produced by Wright and Mar-lon Patton.

Te members are currently doing a wide range oshows, rom college-towns to church shows and rock ven-ues to promote the CD, Wright says.

Jazzreview.com says the CD raises the bar or ener-gized, collaborative and highly listenable guitar, bass anddrum trio music, and calls the guitar sound seductive andPatton a magician at phrasing with his drums and cym-bals.

Te rey Wright rio is an intensely attentive, selessmix o musicians completely connected to what is goingon around them, according to the Web site.

Te best part o playing or Wright is when the bandtries something new and it works.

Our music is very interactive, he says. Its un to gosomeplace you never went beore.

    LINGO

    (sUNDAY, 4:40 P.M.)

Break-ups can be hard. Hard like broken glass against

your head, or less physical, hard on your heart.

Apparently, the members o the roots-based jam

band Lingo know a lot about break-ups, or they just are

sympathetic to this type o sadness.

Justin ramble, rhythm guitar and vocals, calls the

    bands trend a long-standing joke.

All the songs we like best have to do with break-ups,

he says. And we keep writing them.

Much o the media who has tried to describe the

band has commented on their indenable music.

Were tough to dene, I guess, ramble says. Werelike a jam band but a lot more singer/songwriter. We

have a lot o just songs.

ramble says one reporter called them Ben Harper

    mixed with Widespread Panic.

Its kinda unny to see what people say about us.

    ramble says.

Having a sense o humor, as ramble seems to, is

good, especially when you sing a lot about break-ups.

Humor, however, walks a ne line.

We try to avoid corniness, he says. As corny as that

    sounds.

Tree out o our o the members, which includesramble, Dylan Burke (lead guitar and vocals), Drew Ear-

ley (drums), and Alex ramble (bass guitar and vocals),

taught themselves how to play music in high school.

Lingo has played about 45 shows this year already

and plans or their rst album to be released this Fall.

We have the reedom to do a lot and take risks,

ramble says. We want to turn this into a career. I want

to be able to pull up to a town we dont know and have

    people already know our songs.

    (sAtUrDAY, 7:00 P.M.)

In the middle o Floyd Fest, a unky musicestival that took place July 23 through 26 in

Virginia, Atlanta-based soul band Soulhound istwo songs in to one o its sets.

People are dancing. People are sweating. Tesun is shining.

And then the power cuts out.On a nearby stage, the crew is prepping or

Grace Potter to preorm.Soulhound members hold it together and

start playing as soon as possible. Tey play ortwo hours instead o one and make many newans.

It was a rst-class event, says Bob Roth, gui-tar and vocals. We went to one estival wherethe headliner bailed out, but this was not like that. Wehad a great time.

Te band recently released a new CD Quickie in theCave and immediately began pimpin it, as Roth callsit.

Te CD name has brought some inappropriate com-ments, Roth says, but the band recorded it in a live roomcalled Te Cave and they did it quick.

As a unk band, we wanted to have the energ y o the

live shows, Roth says. We tried to bang it out live.

He points out the song Simone as one in particu-lar that was done in one take because o reduced studiotime.

He hopes audiences will have their hair blown backwhen Soulhound perorms, and he enjoys being the un-known actor.

One guy at a estival called our perormance a drive-by unking, and I like that, he says.

Betsy Franck has one o those incredibly powerul voicescapable o transcending genres, according to Kristen thewriter o an Athens music blog Echoreyn o Athens.

People up and down the East Coast know her voice. Her solo and group songs are mostly blues and southern

rock, and she has been recognized or 10 years as a poweruland award-winning perormer who knows how to entertain.

Betsy Francks gospel-strong and siren sweet voice willcarry you saely over the personal turmoil that youd normal-ly approach like a patch o jagged asphalt, writes the 11th

Hour in Macon. But beware: she can be as brutalas a bad stretch down a mountainside too.

Her band, Betsy Franck & the BareknuckleBand, has been together in its current ormationor two years.

Weve fnally melded together and ound oursound, Franck says over the phone. I hope to getbehind this and push it really hard.

She then talks about her excitement about add-ing new instruments.

We all play with other people. Everyone is do-ing side projects, she says. But now we all pr iori-

tize this.Franck is currently fnishing up a solo album

with AJ Adams, which she hopes to release in Sep-tember.

All the bands songs are original and written by Franck. She says she has been working really well under pressure

and generally writes a new song when she gets bored o herother ones.

One o her new songs she particularly likes is Im Araid, which she wrote beore a s et at Caledonia Lounge. Te bandwill perorm the song together at Mule Fest, although shewill record it solo.

Yes, Lety Williams has only one armhence theterm Letybut who needs two arms to play the gui-tar anyway?

Te 31-year-old, Atlanta-born artist started playingthe guitar at the age o 4 and invented a prosthetic pickat the age o 6 because he wanted to play ast like JimiHendrix.

Despite his one-armed existence, he never backeddown. He remembers singing Amazing Grace at churchin ront o 600 people at the age o 6.

He also remembers his ngers hurting terribly when

he learned to play, although he says hes sure the ex-perience isnt any diferent or other people learningto be guitar players.

His Father used to say, Te more you play, theaster it will stop hurting. So, he played non-stop,teaching himsel to play by ear, and then he beganto sing back-up in several bands.

I listened to Dave Matthews and thought, Ithis guy can sing, so can I, Williams says. I neverreally liked my voice, but I got more comortable do-ing it.

Although he transitioned over time into being aront man, he always knew he would be a ull-time

musician.Im musically Schizophrenic, he says. Ill play blues

or awhile and then unk and then metal.Lately, hes been trying to stick to playing Southern-

inuenced blues and rock with jazzy overtones.J. Evan Wade o the Homegrown Music Network calls

Williams lyrics close to all humans and his perspectiveswise and seasoned.

In overcoming disability to create music, JasonLety Williams truly has a remarkable story to tell,he says.

    PAM BLANChARD(sAtUrDAY, 10:00 A.M.)

Picture a group o children dancing reely. Teytwirl in toy-sized circles. Tey laugh and seem toeel pure joy and excitement.

Tis vision, this willingness o children to lettheir spirits shine and put their whole hearts intodancing is why Pam Blanchard chooses to ocusher attention on entertaining young children.

Tey remind me o the ability o music to in-cite joy, and that is cool to watch with any age,she says.

As a teacher at a local Montessori pre-school13 years ago, Blanchard started writing a lot osongs or the children, but wanted to expand the

songs. At the time, she was playing some jazz stuf with Joe

Ellison (drums) and Danny Conkle (bass) who became theoriginal members o the Pam Blanchard & Te Sunny Side-Up Band.

As adults grow older, they oten orgot their youthulmindset, but not Blanchard. Children and the way theythink make sense to her.

What is scary to them (like mean people or loud peo-ple) is scary to me, she says. Whats important enoughto me to write songs about, like butteries and trucks and

watermelons and hoping and colors and eelings, is whatthey care about.

Although grown-ups have a much harder time lettingloose, sometimes she occasionally enjoys dressing up andplaying romantic tunes or an older crowd.

Still, children are what continue to spark her interestthe most.

Young children care about the journey and the processrather then a projected outcome, Blanchard says. And Ilike hanging around people like thatthey help me re-member not to miss the magic o now.

    ONE L

    (sAtUrDAY, 1:10 P.M.)

Phillip Kohnen, the composer and band lead-er or the Athens salsa-soul band One L, rst en-countered Cuban music in 2003 through a col-

lege class while he was studying anthropology. It was love at rst sound, and since that

rst meeting he has listened and played islandrhythms almost nonstop.

I gravitate towards Cuban music because oits really complex rhythms, Kohnen says. Its ausion o European and Arican styles.

He ormed a band called Boondog rio, but itbroke-up soon ater coming together.

Now, One L members change sometimes be-cause o school and other band-related issues, but overall the sound stays the same.

What most Americans know as salsa comes rommusic played in New York in the 1970s by Cuban im-migrants.

One L tries to play stuf more connected to true Cu-ban music inspired by rhythms o the island.

I like to share music rom the island because Cubanpolitics are changing and tourism might be possible,Kohnen says, explaining that Cuban music might thenbecome more popular.

Similarly, he says the big mambo craze o the 1950swas sparked by a political situation.

Until culture changes in Cuba, the audience in Athensthat likes to dance to salsa will likely remain steady.

o pull One L together, Kohnen picked the girafe asa symbol to anchor his advertisements.

Te girafe started as short-necked animal and keptreaching and reaching, he says. Tats sorta how I eelas a musician. I started guitar at age 17, and now Imreaching higher and higher to new plateaus.

    Artist bios

Success appeared with little warning or members oHal Dozen Brass Band. Now, they must gure out howto handle it.

Te band has been together in some capacity or ayear, but together with their current six members onlysince March o 2009.

Up against the locally-known names o Kenosha Kidand Carl Lindberg, they won the 2009 Flagpole Awardor Best Jazz.

Joshua Cutchin says he is surprised at the bandssuccess, and that its as hard as herding cats to get allthe members together or practice or perormances,

which is why the band cant perorm as much asit would like to.

Four out o six members are in school and

two members have obligations with Te Univer-sity o Georgia Redcoat Band.

Out o convenience, Te HDBB plays mainlyin Athens, but did recently play a private partyin North Carolina.

Tey play a balance between new and origi-nal standards and have been incorporating a lotmore collaborations with other bands or artists.

Even though the denition o jazz does tHDBB, Cutchin says the popular conception o

jazz is changing. We do our jazz stuf, but not a lot o swing, Cutchin

says. In the last 30 to 40 years more emphasis has beenon brass band.

Lately, he says hes been describing the band as Dix-ieland unk.

Cutchin says hes enjoying playing with the currentgroup o musicians, although he would love it i morepeople danced at the shows.

It should be music to be danced to, Cutchin says. But so ar only a ew people have been dancing.
