Motor Control (Vacuum Cleaners) Application Note 2020-09-08 1 © 2020 Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation Outline: This application note discusses different types of motors used for vacuum cleaners as well as basic motor circuits. Conventional vacuum cleaners mainly use universal motors powered by a mains supply. Nowadays, brushless DC (BLDC) motors powered by a DC power source are increasingly used for cordless cleaners. BLDC motors are available with three-phase and single-phase configurations, which are controlled in different manners. This application note describes the drive and control methods (phase control and PWM control techniques) for universal and BLDC motors as well as triac-output photocouplers (also known as phototriacs) and MOSFETs used for motor control drive circuits.
