Course Description

International Computer Driving License (ICDL) is a recognised global standard in end-user computer skills certification. This course provides an introduction to the topics covered in the ICDL Base Profile. Module 1: Basic Concepts of IT: IT Components of a computer, definitions, common computer terms, computer use in everyday life... Module 2: Using the Computer and Managing Files: files Working on a desktop, organising files, simple editing, print features... Module 3:Word Processing: (Microsoft Word) Opening a document, basic operations, styling and editing a document, printing a document... Module 4: Spreadsheets: (Microsoft Excel) Opening a spreadsheet, inputting data, working with formulas/functions, graphs and charts, printing... Module 5: Presentations: (Microsoft PowerPoint) Creating a presentation, formatting text, inserting graphics and images, printing, added effects... Module 6: Information and Communication: (Microsoft Internet Explorer) Getting started on the Internet, Web browsing, E-mail, managing messages...

Course objectives

To cover some of the essential knowledge and skills that makes up the internationally-recognised ICDL Base module. To enable students to gain knowledge of the use of computer the creation of files and management, how they are organised in windows 7. Knowing about RAM &ROM, Classifying Input and Output devices

The students will be asked to work on exercises as class work, homework submissions and quizzes. The practical part will be of main importance to teach the students how to use the computer and know about computer parts, and be able to use Microsoft office packages like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

The students will gain some knowledge of the use of Microsoft

Windows 7 Operating System and they will learn the creation

of files and management with Microsoft office packages like

Word, Excel, Power Point, access and outlook.

Classifying Input and Output devices.

Making differences between RAM &ROM.

Installing and uninstalling Application

In Microsoft office Word they will learn to:

Close the document.

Open another existing Word document.

Using copy & paste and drag and drop a word or sentence

Extra notes: Even though the main course is practical, I feel we need to spend more time explaining the theoretical portions of the subject, especially to focus on Windows. Because the first year students start late, we will not have enough time to go through the topics in detail.
