(1) how long 意为“多长时间”，用来对 for 等表示时间段的状语提问。如：

— How long did you stay in this city?

— For about two weeks.

(2) It takes sb. some time to do sth. 表示“某人花费多长时间做某事”， it 是形式主语，动词不定式 to do 是真正的主语。

昨晚我用了半个小时做作业。It took me half an hour to do my homework last night.
