To Returning and New Band Students:

As the spring semester closes and we focus our attention on summer activities, let us be reminded that something verspecial is patiently waiting to wake from a long and cold, wintery slumber. The campus of Western Illinois Universianticipates this awakening much like a small child anticipates the incredible gift inside when tearing away wrappingpaper. I have already seen Dr. Thomas running the streets of Macomb at 5:00am training and building the energyneeded to awaken this entity. Students... both rookies and veterans... prepare yourselves to bring the MarchingLeathernecks back to life on August 16, 2011! We can't wait! We have a wonderful schedule planned and Dr. ThomasI are excited for this fall.

WIU offers many exciting musical outlets for our students. In addition to being a part of the exciting MarchingLeathernecks, membership in any of the WIU bands is open to students regardless of major. In all groups, non-majmake up a sizeable portion of the personnel. Potential new members are urged to investigate the possibilities andchoose to perform in one or more of our fine ensembles. The table of contents below lists the bands of WIU andorchestra winds, and for each there is an explanation of the procedures, schedules, and other pertinent information the enclosed brochure. We look forward to seeing you soon and having you continue your musical participation witus.

If you have been awarded College Work/Study financial assistance for the coming school year and have not found aposition, please stop by the Bands Office to fill out an application. Also bring with you the confirmation from the

Financial Aid Office indicating the amount you will be allowed to make. We may have one or two positions to fill operhaps there might be other opportunities in the School of Music. We will also attempt to assist students findpositions elsewhere on campus. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 to4:30 p.m.

Your participation is monumental in continuing the Tradition of Excellence, established in the WIU Bands 109 yearsago. I expect nothing less than providing the opportunity for you and our fans to experience the MLs at its best:powerful music, creative marching, and memories to last a lifetime!

Go 'necks!

Sincerely,

BANDS AT WESTERN - Fall Semester 2011

Marching Leathernecks

May, 2011

Greetings to both current and future Marching Leathernecks!

With the end of the 2010-2011 school year comes the excitement and anticipation of the new marching season atthe end of summer. I am very excited and pleased with this coming year’s schedule and music/show selections.

We will be taking a trip to St. Louis as guest performers at the Bands of America Super-Regional and have manyfun things in the planning process for the trip. We will also be taking a couple of short one-day trips to RockIsland, IL, and Pontiac, IL, for special performances.

The music for show #1 is being arranged as I write this and should be arriving soon. All of the shows this year look to be very exciting. Our football team is the best it has been in years, and the home football schedule issuch that we are able to have scheduled weekends off each month. All of that with the additional possibilities of new turf on Hanson Field, new uniforms for the Marching Leathernecks, and many others things to make for oneexciting 2011 season.

Please take a look at the performance schedule and other important information in this brochure. Be sure toreturn the Response Form (2 pages) without delay. Music will be available for download via the “WesternOnline”

system (westernonline.wiu.edu), and you should be looking for that over the summer. However, in order toaccess and print your parts, you must be registered for Marching Band (MUS 116). If you have not registeredyet, please do so immediately. Also, if you are in a section with multiple parts (ex. trumpets), please choose thepart that you feel most comfortable with, and we will make any adjustments necessary once everyone arrives atband camp.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing youin August!
