How to get there

The best way to get there is to first get to Santiago deCompostela or A Coruña. To get to Fisterra, up to 6 buses rundaily from A Coruña and up to 7 run from Santiago deCompostela, some requiring a change in Baio. From the village ofFisterra, follow the road to Cape Finisterre. The cemetery willappear on your left side half way to Cape Finisterre.

Finisterre Cemetery

Address

Rúa do Alcalde Fernández15155 FisterraSpain

Constructing a cemetery at Cape Finisterre (a rock-boundpeninsula on the west coast of Galicia and deriving its name fromthe Latin 'Finisterrae', which literally means 'Land's End'),demands a site-sensitive approach and careful execution of theproject. César Portela's starting point was the archaic layout ofgranite rocks that form the peninsula and the forces of naturethat created this spot: the pulling of the atlantic wind, the lightand the constant surf of the ocean. The result is an arrangementof buildings alongside a sloping (or rising) existing road thatconnects the surrounding hills with the lower beachside. Granitecubes form a small chapel and burial niches. Their visualconnection to the sea reminds of ancient celtic graves that couldbe found nearby in Galicia and even though this consideration inobservance of the modernist shape of boxes is not too obvious, itleads to a poetic atmosphere that can be perceived especially

during foggy Galician weather.

Pedrafita Tunnels Control Centre

Address

Highway N-VI s/n27670 Pedrafita do CebreiroSpain

In-between the highway and the city of Piedrafita, this Centre ofControl was built for the management of 7 road tunnels. On thissite, the architects created a building with a single character, without interfering with the magic of the landscape. Theproximity to the former sanctuary of Cebreiro, in the centre ofpilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, gave the keys to thedesign of the project. The nature gave the idea for the forms andmaterials. Large stone plates, that local countrymen use toprotect their dead in the cemetery of Cebreiro, are used for thefacade. The 500 kg stones were handled masterfully in the midstof the cold and isolation of those heights, with a strong andresounding result. For the first time, the large format of thesejewels of nature, are placed on the façade of a building that isintended to make visible presence with austerity and dignity, inthe midst of a harsh and inhospitable landscape.

Xoán XXIII avenue

Address

Xoán XXIII Avenue15704 Santiago de CompostelaSpain

A memory described: On my first visit to the city of Santiago, Idiscovered that for the city and it's inhabitants nothing isstrange. Even so, when after a few years I returned to propose adesign, respect and responsibility came before reserves. Then Idid not know yet, that working with them, they gave me theirshare of wisdom of centuries, so that my architecture, which isnot yet history, could get in and get it's place, slowly andinevitably, on the site in the city of Santiago. The hillssurrounding santiago show the stones of the Old City. If we passby Xoan XXIII we can look out, between the New and Oldparades, until the river bottom. The project has been kept to aminimal intervention. At the same parimeter, the edges of thisspace have been replenished earlier. Now they are in stone, tobecome host and a place of entry.

Domus

Address

Calle de Santa Teresa 115002 A CoruñaSpainhttp://www.casaciencias.org/domus/

Domus, la Casa del Hombre (Museum of Mankind) is a museumlocated in A Coruña, Galicia, on the coastal road that unitesRiazor Beach with the city centre. It sits between the cliffs andsome mid-sized housing blocks, vestiges of the town-planningboom of the 1970s. The ocean façade is created fromprefabricated concrete sheets, 2,61 metres wide and 16 metrestall. Curved according to a clothoid line, they give one theimpression of having been affected by violent waves and oceanwinds. This conjunction creates a gigantic but simple plane 94metres wide. The opposite façade is composed of a double wallof Galician granite, each sheet being 21 centimetres thick. It is10 metres high, and shaped to form a screen. The interior ischaracterised by a sense of spatial continuity felt both verticallyand horizontally. The exhibition spaces, exposed to a void ofimmense proportions, are located over irregular platforms

interconnected by a series of ramps.

Maritime Museum of Galicia

Address

Avenida Atlántida 16036208 VigoSpainhttp://www.museodomar.com

The museum serves as a transition between the earth and thesea, and is formed in this paradigmatic place on the coastaledge. In addition to being public space in the heat of constructednature, the museum invites the visitor to approach the sea and itteaches us how to enjoy it and how to love it. Also, it remembersus that it is possible to construct its borders without destroyingthem. A lucky encounter between a logical architecture, beautiful arts and a happy nature. The composition, the spaces, the materials, the relation between the context, everythingreaffirms the architecture as the geometric place of man, like asacred space of its relation with the world.

A program incoherent: A building where the greatest volume wasdestined for a warehouse in a privileged site. The tension of theown program creates new needs and creates spaces where thelight is presented as the axis of the new project. The logic, begins to emerge the true essence of the use - transformed intothe study hall of the university. The new proposal is a piece of36 x 100 m where light control is established for the variousfunctions. They used primary colours because the colour is alwaysstatement and focuses the eye of the beholder. The windows arestained blue and red flood the structure that it is even moredefined framing place, tinting of life, filling that space, insideand out. The skylights are the clock time. The orange frames thelight to disappear by being absorbed by it. The enclosure ofconcrete, the wall is cut by creating slits of light, half-closedwalls.
