Hungria
Munkácsy foi um pintor húngaro muito conceituado no século XIX. Começou a
pintar durante os anos que despendeu em Arad como marceneiro. Com a ajuda de várias pessoas estudou nas academias de Viena, Munique e Düsseldorf. Munkácsy pintou seu primeiro trabalho expressivo, "The Condemned Cell", em Düsseldorf,
em 1872. Com seu amigo László Paál mudou-se para Paris, onde viveu o resto de sua
vida.

A sua obra foi dedicada ao realismo entre 1873 e 1875. "Midnight Ramblers", "Farewell“, "Churning Woman", "Woman Carryng Brushwood" e
"Pawnshop" foram o apogeu de sua carreira. Casou-se com a viúva do Baron de Marches em 1874, e seu estilo mudou um pouco dessa época em diante. Partindo
dos temas típicos do realismo, ele passou a produzir quadros bem coloridos e naturezas-mortas. Este foi, também, o período em que ele se voltou para a pintura
de paisagens; seu interesse crescente por tal tipo de pintura foi marcado por "Dusty Road“, "Corn Field" e "Walking in the Woods". A assimilação do estilo de
László Paál é significativa nas paisagens pintadas durante a década de 1880: "Avenue" e "The Colpach Park". Seus retratos no estilo realista, como os de Franz
Liszt e Cardinal Haynald, foram também concebidos nessa época, junto com a pintura sacra: "Christ in front of Pilate", "Golgotha" e,
mais tarde, "Ecce homo". No fim de sua carreira, Munkácsy pintou dois trabalhos monumentais: "Hungarian Conquest", para a House of Parliament, e um afresco
intitulado "Apotheosis of Renaissance", para o teto do Kunsthistoriches Museum em Viena.¨
