En 1905 se trasladó a Berlín paracolaborar en el estudio de BrunoPaul y, de 1908 a 1911, en el de P.Behrens, donde conoció a WalterGropius y Le Corbusier, que son,junto con él mismo y elestadounidense Frank Lloyd Wright,los mayores arquitectos del siglo XX.

A pesar de no tenerestudios, Mies leyó todasu vida. Su primer cliente,el filósofo Alois Riehl, leinculcó la costumbre.“La transformación delindividuo como requisitopara la transformación dela sociedad”.

Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial ingresó en la infantería para combatir en Rumania. Puede que fuera allí, en el campo de batalla, donde incubó el cambio.

Al regresar, defendió una arquitectura “de piel y
huesos” con tres rascacielos de vidrio con
esqueleto de aceroA partir de su
participación en G, quedó fuertemente influido por el
neoplasticismo de Van Doesburg.

Los primeros rascacielos que levantó Mies, los Lake Shore
Drive de Chicago, le llegaron tras una discusión filosófica.
