cillor Lynda Parsonson. Parsonson believes

that the residents of Midvaal need to fightfor their municipality and make their feel-ings known to the MDB if they stand anychance of saving Midvaal.Midvaal Speaker Freddie Peters ex-

plained the background of the metro issue,and the many challenges that Midvaal hasfaced in its efforts to stop the decision tomerge the municipality.Mivaal Local Municipality’s media lia-

MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local MunicipalMayor Bongani Baloyi recently hosted thefirst Principal’s Forum meeting for the cur-rent year.

The agenda was packed with new projectsto be launched in Midvaal.

That day, Baloyi launched a Career Gui-dance Programme aimed at all Midvaalschools including a career day to take placelater in the year. This programme will helplearners with access to information on possi-ble fields of study. In addition, Baloyilaunched a food-garden project, where themunicipality will work together with schoolsto encourage a passion for agricultureamongst school children, and to teach themthat they can and should grow their own veg-etables, even at home.

The third project discussed was a learner-profiling system through which the challen-ges of learners in each school can be under-stood so that teachers and tutors can help

remedy their problems from a young age.Midvaal’s MMC for Social Services

Councillor Rob Jones says, “Because mostof the education function sits at district andprovincial level, rather than at local munici-pality level, the local government tends tobecome distant from schools in the area.

This Forum allows us to stay in touch withwhat is going on in our schools, and to assistwherever possible, even if it’s just to engagewith the district on behalf of our schools.”

Jones, believes that the Forum is impor-tant for showing support for schools.

The principals in attendance were excitedabout the projects being launched, and aboutthe Principals’ Forum in general.

They stated that it is rare to see a Mayorengage with schools at that level.

MEYERTON. - A public participation mee-ting will be held by the Demarcation Boardon March 11 at 09:00 at the Meyerton TownHall. Therewere problems to confirm the ve-nue.

According to Midvaal Councillor FreddiePeters, chairperson of PAM (People Againstthe Metro), the reason for the venue beingwithheld at such a late stage is possibly poli-tical. Initially the meeting would have beenheld at the Vereeniging Town Hall. PAM haslodged legal action against the DemarcationBoard and the case is pending in the GautengHigh Court. “Meanwhile the Demarcation

Board is going ahead with public participa-tion meetings even though the case broughtagainst them has not been ruled on. The onlyconclusion we can draw from this is that theDemarcation Board is hoping to press onwith the process so that they can turn roundand say it has gone so far that a court casecan be disregarded,” said Peters.

He further says it is imperative for asmanymembers of the community and people whoare against theMetro to attend the public par-ticipation meeting. “This will be D-Day forus,” Peters said. “We have to make our voi-ces heard and take a stand.”
