El lenguaje es un elemento que identifica a los diversos grupos humanos. Los vestigios más antiguos de escritura y el conocimiento de las tradiciones lingüísticas ayudan a explicar las relaciones entre los diferentes pueblos. Antes de la Conquista la lengua más extendida en gran parte de lo que hoy es México fue el náhuatl.
