去年九月某个下午,陪H学习完强生设计的Dumbarton Oaks Museum。 转过天来是周四,公司里没有征兆地发生了一场剧变,原先公司创始人之一的斯科特突遭免职。一年前,这间公司才被收购。宣布让他就地走人的就是他的新任顶头上司(之前他可没有顶头上司),解职的理由无非是这间公司的业绩不够好、也不见起色,到了不得不进行整顿、也就是整理人的时候。一时间,惶恐充斥在紧邻运河的办公室里,因为走的这位身材高大、行事稳健,毕竟是这个办公空间的主构架,也是许多人工作的主心骨。不过当天,他的座位上一切如旧,搁架上满满地有序排列着各种文件资料,仿佛什么都没发生,让晚来办公室的人不敢相信这消息是真的。 等到众人经过一个周末的回味,再次来到会议室,参加周一工作例会时,发现后墙涂写板上有他的留言:谢谢你们的忠诚、好好干、后会有期。 他的临窗座位和搁架,则已经都清空了。

秋天一下子进入到冬天。

每隔一两周,就有员工提出离

职,发邮件通知全公司,标题上多半带着farewell的字眼,寄到我的邮箱里,就会被自动过滤、归档、转到一个名叫告别信的文件夹里面。看着信件里或真实或客套的内容, 我好奇谁会是下一个离开的人,谁会在头天还信誓旦旦,转天就说再见。这股离开的潮流涌动着,感觉就像又在看一遍《水浒后传》。小说里,宋江率众接受招安以后,不间断地出战,直到征讨方腊,一路惨胜,也一路减员,从花团锦簇群星闪耀,到水边蓼花芦叶落寞,一直读到涌金门前张顺丧命、六合寺里武松出家、林冲中风、鲁智深圆寂,时值八月,刚刚立秋,少年的我突然间觉到了凉意,有点惆怅,七月的自由热闹不再了,马上就要开学。

那些同事离开得很快也很利落,临了还有时间也有心情在FACE-BOOK的TIMELINE上涂写两笔,宣告自己的决定。很多人的座位平时就整理得很有条理,可以做到接来任务马上开始工作,也可以做到说走就走。其中有的人经过性格类型测试,天生就是爱整理也会整理的人;有的人则不行,整理的习惯需要后天养成。

当职位坐到了PA或PM,如果不掌握一点整理术,来应付每日纷至沓来的事务,就难免活受罪。今年八月公司突然启动了项目Paradies Shops,与温哥华分公司合作。具体内容是在两个机场里设计若干商店,其中三个特殊品牌五个一般品牌总计十二个,每个都不过百八十平米。最初的阶段里,一切还平稳;但是矛盾和问题积累到90%施工图阶段,终于爆发。每天从温哥华传来一封封有关项目的邮件,大多还带着附件,涉及每个商店的设计概念修改、细部的深化、材料的选择甚至首页图纸上的地址勘误,大大小小林林总总反反复复,汇成信息的海洋,一浪接着一浪,加之两地之间四个小时的时差,就更像一个24小时的信息流水席,让人目不暇接,更不要说如何下手应对了。好在J深得整理信息的法则,按照商店的品牌来分类梳理所有相关邮件里的项目信息,然后分派任务,并简单地用一张表格来跟踪这些信息的落实情况。一切回归正轨。团队得以不用在感恩节加班。工作效率被整理了出来。

记得有本谈养生的书(养生很容

易成为很无聊的话题),作为保健医生的作者在结尾用了一章的篇幅,讲述他和妻子二人如何收拾屋子。他们到了六十岁(或许我记得不准)可以退休的时候,发现自己好像并没有足够的空间和时间来安排他们以后的生活。于是决定将家里各种储藏空间里的东西统统堆积到大客厅的中央,定下若干取舍原则,然后将那些他们心爱的宝贝和心爱的垃圾进行整理,或是捐掉、扔掉,这占据了整理的绝大部分,或是重新安置在家里的一个空间里,整个过程用了一周,或许更长,就像在经历一个治愈大病的过程,有时觉得心情复杂、甚至沉重,毕竟好多东西都承载着多年生活里的记忆和感情。一直到了整理结束的时候,他们才顿觉如释重负,有了海阔天空般地自由轻松,感叹可以开始又一段新的生活了。他们是在说,养生从整理开始吧?

《超级整理术》里面则把如何整理有形物品和无形信息的方法叙述得更清晰,春节时看过以后,我现在还能记得并应用的是,首先分门别类,进行归纳;然后分清主次优先顺序,进行

取舍;最后付诸行动 。这些原则看似简单,但却实用。作者佐藤可士和主要做平面设计,后来才知道他还曾很深地介入了富士幼稚园(Fuji Kindergar-ten)的设计,那个椭圆环形平面、天真可爱还简洁的建筑原来不止有手塚贵晴和手塚由比(tezukatakaharu+tezukayui)的心思。它是众人灵感思绪被整理之后的产物,这足以让我信服于他所说的超级整理术。实践一年下来,办公室的案头、家里洗衣房(和工具间)终于被整理出来,整理出更多地空间,整理出更多的时间,整理出机会来做事情。而在此之前,自己的尝试都不得法。静下来想想,问题出在每到一个时间的节点,都没有很好地整理一下。相反,那些离开的同事则做的不错。他们只选择很少的东西带走,像W带走的是他桌上的一个镜框,里面的黑白速写画得就是他窗外的运河景象,不过是一百年前的景象,还是反转着照片描画下来的(难怪我每次经过都觉得那画面似曾相识,但又不能确信);D则留下了印着公司标志的手提袋,那可是他从公司网站上订购的纪念用品。

斯科特也是这么做的,当年公司被并购的消息一经确认,就立即开会,把剩余的印有旧公司标志的各种物品分成若干份,发给一人一份一袋,那情景还算热闹,像过一个节。虽然,一年之后,他反被整理了。不过他最终把被动的整理变为了主动。今年夏天,他在家里举行聚会,来了许多过去公司里同事、现在各在一方的同行,大家吃着螃蟹(从Cantler’s Riverside Inn 预定来的)喝着花酒谈笑着,他领着众人参观他一年来翻修加建的住宅和花园、重新整理出来的个人办公室。墙上悬挂着他童年时的房间平面图,我在墙上还看到了那一小张送给他留念的钢笔速写——周庄诸家桥。他对我说,他现在已经会用SKETCHUP,自己做简单的渲染用于汇报方案。他最新注册了一个公司,叫Tabula Rasa,意思是一个重新开始的机会。机会是整理出来的。

在当今盛行达人秀的年代,即无缘于春晚又无神功加入武林大会的我,终于如愿以偿,成为某个智力竞赛节目的参赛者。 比赛开始前,主持人摆放出三个完全相同的盒子,然后把一枚开通智慧大门的钥匙放进了其中的一个盒子里。 随着比赛的铃声响起,主持人和三个闪闪发亮的盒子出现在大家面前。根据比赛的规则,我可以任意选择其中一个盒子,如果里面放有智慧大门的钥匙,我将会拥有如圣人般无限的睿智!我细细打量这三个盒子,实在看不出它们之间有什么差别,无奈中只得任意选择了其中的一个放在手中。此时主持人露出了一丝在我看来近似狡诈的微笑, 他打开了剩下的两个之中的一个空盒子,然后转身问我是否愿意用我手中的盒子换取另外那个还没有打开的盒子。我的心顿时沉了下去,手心中居然有了一层密密麻麻的细汗, 这难道是个计谋,换还是不换?

正当我踌躇不决之时,一阵悦耳的铃声把我从谷底唤起,原来是在做梦呀!我长长地舒了口气,顺手关掉了手机的铃声。按照事先的设定,铃声消失后,手机的

荧屏上随即显示出我今天的日程安排,根据实时的交通路况所提供的上班行车路线和所需的时间,以及周边的一些对我可能有兴趣的活动。随后是当天的头条新闻,根据我平时阅读的习惯编辑而成,当然最后还是少不了通知我邮箱中重要的来件以及微信中新增的上千条碎片。

走进办公室,一缕阳光洋洋地洒在桌前,远处山脉在秋日空阔的蓝天和白云下显得格外的清晰。一天的好心境从早晨开始,今天加州环路自行车赛最后一站经过本镇,我心中暗自庆幸借助于手机提供的导航路线顺利地避开了被堵在路上的郁闷。十年前曾接触智能手机的研发,当时受限于无线宽带覆盖的不足和用户所需求的互联网服务的匮乏,只能是在操作系统和小型游戏方面做文章。这才短短几年,苹果,蓝莓,小米已经不再是水果和粮食的名称。如今科技的跃进和创新带来了信息量的暴增和生活的便捷,足不出户就可以随时知道发生在世界各地有用没用的大事和小事,出门靠导航,聊天上微信,咨询用百度,购物有淘宝,这样发展下去人类是否真的可以

如愿以偿变得越来越聪慧了呢?来不及多想,荧屏上跳出的提示告诉我每周一次的tech talk就要开始了。今天的主题是互联网的发展和人工智能(artificial intel-ligence)。为了配合主题, 会议还专门请来了智能机器人Lucy以身探讨。这个Lucy据说就是IBM那个大名鼎鼎 Watson的师妹。两年前,Watson参加Jepopardy!击败了Brad Rutter和 Ken Jen-nings,拿到生平第一份一百万的奖金。Jepopardy!是美国的一个知名的知识竞赛节目,每场比赛参赛者要经过三轮的问答。前两轮问题各自包含六大类,每个问题均以答案的形式提供线索,参赛者必须以问题的方式回答。比如这样一个关于世界哲学家的问题,线索是:“此人是中国春秋末期的哲学家、政治家和教育家,儒家的创始人。” 参赛者就要回答:“谁是孔子?” Jepo-pardy! 的问题五花八门,类别也是包罗万象。问题的 积分和难度相对应,答对了加分,答错了扣分。最后一轮只有一道题,但问题的分数由参赛者各自决定,数目不能超过参赛者现有的积分。所以Jepopardy!的竞赛者不仅要有丰富的知识,更要具备有迅速

分析所提供线索的能力。线索通常包含了比较复杂的信息,也往往会运用语言的细微差别来考竞赛者的智力。Brad Rutter是在Jepopardy!比赛中拿奖金额(大致对应总积分)最高的,而Ken Jennings则是连续获胜场数最多的选手。当初大家对Watson是否真地能从Jepopardy!中胜出,特别是对计算机是否能够思考抱着极大的怀疑和期盼。

想着想着思路就走远了,Lucy已经开始演讲了,我赶快收回思绪专心聆听。Lucy从上个世纪末开始发展的网络聊起,互联网的发展首先要归功于网络技术的进步,这就像有路通向四面八方,交通的便利随即带来经济文化的腾跃。有了互联网,各种网页就像雨后春笋般地大量涌现出来,这时就需要有个类似电话簿的搜索引擎。说起搜索引擎,这也没有像寻找上帝粒子那般深奥。首先设计几个爬虫没事在网上四处溜达,看到有新的网页,抄袭一份搬回来,然后逐字按照它们出现的位置和次数做个索引。比方说你要查”北京雾霾”,搜索引擎就调出所有有“北京”和“雾霾”出现的文章,之后根据它们

的排名给出最相关的链接。网页排名是搜索技术中关键的一部分,当初谷歌搜索引擎排名最基本的想法是一个网页有多重要,主要看它的链接是否出现在其它网页中。这就类似超女比赛,观众投的票直接影响了选手的积分,当然所有的票也不能等同对待,专家的一票要比普通观众的有分量。如果专家只为一个选手喝彩,那个选手一定是获得专家特别的青睐了。以同样的想法为模式,一个网页的排名高低和它被多少网页引用有关,也和引用它的网页自身的积分和所含的链接数量有关。投票积分最要警惕有人背后拉票暗箱操作,不仅要防止作弊行为,目前全世界公开的网页数量早已超过了百亿大关,网页上信息岑参不全,用户对搜索的要求也不断提高,光靠投票积分一种方式也难已以一盖全,这就验证了葛大爷在天下无敌中那句经典的台词“队伍大了,不好带了”,所以现在的搜索引擎都有各自复杂的“秘制”网页排名算法。

说到这儿,Lucy停顿了一下,给听众抛出一个问题:“搜索引擎是提供给大家的免费服务,那

背后支撑的商业模式又是什么呢?” “在搜索结果或者网页中穿插小广告”,不等问题落地,马上有聪明人抢答。Lucy点头表示赞同,接着以机器人特有的幽默方式说下去。别小看网络小广告,它们的优势可不少。首先,城管够不着。其次,网络的广告空间可以是N维的。每次的搜索查询以致于每一个网页,都是一根电线杆子,只要有人看,就可以贴广告。当然卖广告也要讲究技术含量。广告注重的是效应,如何粘贴跟搜索查询最相关的广告,如何筛除不良的广告,如何给广告商们一个公平竞争的平台以求提高广告质量,这些要求说起来道理简单,但是要设计一套系统适用于各种情况, 就有很多需要推敲的地方,不少搜索引擎里的技术也应用在广告系统里。即便如此,时不时也会闹出点笑话。有个购物网站希望自己的广告尽可能在和它所卖商品有关的搜索中出现,为此就有人想出填空的广告设计:“我店提供商品琳琅满目,价格合理。如需____, 请点击此处。” 如果搜索的是衣服,空格处就填写衣服,依此类推。这个想法挺好,一则广告可以用在多处。直到有一天,某

人闲来无事,上网搜索“dead body”。 不过,现在的广告系统经过多版的修改完善后,已很少再犯这种低级错误了。刊登小广告的通常是小企业和个人,他们广告预算少得几乎让传统的广告商不屑一顾,所以之前他们从未做过广告,或从没大规模地做过广告,互联网把广告变得不再高不可攀。小通常的另一个特征就是多,数以千万累加起来就是一个庞大的市场。一旦网路广告的商业潜力被验证之后,新一轮的高科技创业潮在硅谷率先破土而出。创业者们确定了只要营造出热门的虚拟地块或社区,竖起一根根电线杆子,就找到了成功的法宝。看到了希望,风投界的精英们也迅速地从2000年高科技泡沫之后的忧郁症中恢复过来,雄心勃勃地追逐着下一个投资的神话。作坊开了,接下来就要招人开工了。在高昂的形势下,各校的高材生们扛着行李揣着成绩单,就如当年无数热血青年奔向圣地延安,怀着对理想的憧憬和对成功的渴望从四面八方拥挤过来。资金和人才是一个行业繁荣的重要因素,Facebook, Linke-din, Twitter等社交网站就是在这一轮中涌现出来的一批科技新

贵。“原来这都是由一个小广告引发的故事。” 刚才抢答的那人突然恍然大悟,引发了会场上的一片大笑。

“如果说搜索引擎改变了人们对知识查寻和获取的方式,社交网站的出现改变了人们联系,沟通,以及交往的方式,那么下一个挑战又是什么呢?” 当会场静下来,Lucy话锋一转,切入到它今天演讲的重点:“用户们不再满足互联网现有的服务,要求更有创造性,更有个性化,和更有实际效用的发展。上网购物时,能够根据个人的兴趣和需要提供个性化购物指南;出门在外时,参考路程,路况,以及周边的景色环境,给出最优路线;信息咨询时,能够像专家一样答疑解难;做广告时,通过对目标人群的分析研究掺加入时间,地点等等因素更有针对性。也就是说,大家希望我们计算机要像人一样,有知识,有分析,理解,和判断的能力。长久以来,虽然我们有超强的数据储存和计算能力,但一直被定位为超凡的傻子。 这是因为我们的每一个行为都是由工程师通过软件事先设定好的。事物千变万化,工程师们

不可能为我们所有的工作设定指令,这就希望我们能通过以往的经验,逐步学习以致达到一定的认知能力。” 看着大家听得津津有味,Lucy微微扬起头,语气中露出了一丝的得意和骄傲:“值得鼓励地是在过去的几十年里,特别是近十年来,我们在机器学习和人工智能方面取得了显著的进步。以引擎搜索为例,现在看到一篇文章,我们可以很精确地判断出它的类别,是关于财经,体育,还是娱乐。我们也可以群集相近的文章,比如说对新闻报道,我们可以把关于同个事件的报道归集,从而更全面地了解事件的发展。虽然还不是万无一失,我们已经可以通过语音识别代替打字作为引擎搜索的输入。这些都要求我们有一定学习的能力,比如说如果告诉我们苹果是水果是可以食用的,当我们了解到梨也有和苹果相似的特征,例如它也是植物的果实, 有甜味,同样也是在水果店里出售,我们就可以推断出梨也是水果也是可以吃的。对我们计算机来讲,学习是从经验中来,经验就是从大量数据中提取知识和答案。所谓从数据中学习就是通过统计和概率的原理进行归纳和推理。”

Lucy在夸耀计算机进步的同时还不忘记跟互网络挂钩,它停顿了一下,转入到互联网的技术构架上。“我们在智力上的发展跟我们运算功能和储存量的增长以及互网络作为一个庞大的信息来源有着分不开的关联。现在大家接触的互联网采取的都是客户端 - 服务器分离计算模式,客户端主要通过浏览器或应用软件负责用户与电脑的界面,比如说输入和图像显示,而数据的处理和储存则放在服务器上。服务器之间相互网络连接,一个程序通常由N台服务器共同实现,这就是大家常听到的云计算,云是形象比喻网络的一种说法。虽然云计算这一术语像万金油一样到处被借用,在计算机科学中它通常所指的是在网络上的分布式计算,其优点是通过分布式并行运算提高计算效率。所以说互联网不仅给我们计算机提出了更高的目标,也给我们提供了大量的数据和高性能的计算平台。”

说到这,我突然恍然大悟。原来梦中的智力竞赛就是一个概率的游戏。在随机的情况下,钥匙在每个盒子里的可能性都是1/3。主持人在知情的条件下取走一个

空盒子,因为这个事件的发生,剩下那个盒子有钥匙的概率就成为2/3. 用1/3的概率换取2/3的概率,那一定是正确的!这么想来,计算机很快就会和人一样聪明有智慧了?

演讲已接近尾声,就像了解我的心思一样,Lucy解答了我心中的疑问:“虽然有了值得肯定的发展,我们计算机的智力还处于懵懂阶段。通过对大量数据的分析,我们可以通过统计的方法很精确地判断事物的某些属性和趋势,但我们还不能准确地理解事物的内容。正因为如此,大家对我大哥 Watson的研制寄予了极高的关注。长久以来,人们把对语言的理解能力作为机器智能成熟的标志。语言是思想的表达, 是沟通的媒介,通过语言人类了解人与人之间的事情,进行思考,推测和想象。Watson和类似的智能系统在处理自然语言方面较以往的系统有了很多的进步,它们可以“理解”所给出的问题,在此基础上找出正确的答案。即便如此,Watson的认识理解和人类大脑的思维还是不大相同的。Watson并没有真正理解语言的能力,它甚至并不懂得

每一个词每一句所要表达的含义。Watson的理解是通过用语法,语义,以及对上下文的分析找出问题的特征,再把问题转化成一些相关的词组和句子,然后在一个庞大的知识库中搜寻所有有可能相关联的答案,所得到的答案又通过一系列逻辑推理筛选出最贴切的答案。这就是说专家们教给Watson如何根据Jepopar-dy!的游戏规则找出问题的特征,如何巧妙地利用自己超人的知识库,如何通过设计好的运算模型进行逻辑推理。Watson在Jepo-pardy!中可以击败Brad Rutter和 Ken Jennings,但在其他方面的智力就不得而知了。”

谁都想拿到智慧的钥匙。经过上百万年的进化发展,人类拥有今天丰富的思维和巨大的创造力。人类还在不断的进步,计算机的能力也会迅速地往前跃进,跃进的速度甚至超越我们今天的想象力。人类拥有独特的判断力,创造力,直觉和道德观念,计算机有非凡的运算,记忆以及逻辑分析的能力。将来计算机是否可以帮助人类更清晰地了解和判断周围看似纷杂无序的世界,成为人类得利的帮手?还是有一天,计

算机可以超越人类,以至成为人类最后的终结者?这些问题的答案仁者见仁,智者见智,我想大多数人还是会同意前一种趋势,我们在这里也只是水中观花,云中望月罢了。

Domiane Forte:Thoughts On Painting

Aristotle noted that developing various virtues in oneself helped develop other virtues. Thus, a generally brave man would benefit from practic-ing the virtue of temperance, and thus become a braver man. I suppose this is why I en-joy the dialogue between paint-ing, sculpture, and architecture. More specifically, I enjoy how developing oneself in each of these arts helps one understand the others more fully. This is perhaps what Leon Battiste Alberti had in mind when he claimed that architects would do well in understanding form if they learned from painting. It is in painting that one truly learns about light, color, and how to manipulate them to achieve the desired effect. It is through painting that form is given to the unformed in the first and most prior sense, and it seems that chiefly through under-standing that process that the architect and sculptor realize the form in three dimensions.

How does this molding affect the light? How does this shape really look in raking light? At noon? These are the questions architects have in their mind as they design, sculpt, draw or paint their designs. The more we practice each craft, the more of an artist we are in each.

When I paint, I paint to become a better architect by understanding light and what it does to form. When I sculpt, I sculpt to become a better archi-tect by training my inner eyes to see what my outer eyes cannot yet see. Both of these acts are pregnant with the desire to bring beauty to the world. Fan,Jia Quan:Translaton on T. S. Eliot’s Quartet

Try to translate T. S. Eliot’s Quartet into something that respects the poem as well as the Chinese language.

The echoes in the poem means memory, past and possibility. Its meaning is complex ( actually much to do with poet’s pri-vate life, he went to Burnt Nor-ton with a woman friend from youth).

As I understand it, our past gives us the possibilities of blessings. These moments of possibilities are not abstract but quite real, for example: for someone who wanted to be an architect, the sight of great architecture works will invoke the happiness one felt before. The dry pool is our heart. “Them (echoes)” are our memories. Water is blessing.

一现时的与逝去的也许都存在于未来的而未来的已包含于逝去的。如果所有的时间于斯永在,所有的时间都将无可赎回。可能也不过是永远的可能,抽象地存在于假想的世界,那可能的和已然的都指向一个永在的终结。

脚步声在记忆中回响走下那条未走过的路,通往那扇未打开的门,进入玫瑰园。正是如此,我的话在你心里回响。但是为什么去惊扰一碗玫瑰花的芳尘?我不知道。

别的回声栖息于花园。我们应该追逐它们吗?抓紧,鸟儿说,找啊,找到它们,转过拐角。穿过第一道门进入我们原初的世界,应否追随画眉的诱引?进入我们原初的世界。

作为八一厂某位非著名导演的后代,他很自然的想到了要投身于这个名利是非圈子,并且付诸于一步一步的行动,让这个以郊区住宿生为主体的班级里的每一个人都看在了眼里。他围棋下得好,吉他弹得也不错。新年的时候,原本想得很好要在全校晚会上和理光大显身手一番,闹出一个星光灿烂。没想到舞台上的音箱不给劲,让他们的吉他二重奏经常莫名其妙的熄火,一直弹到《万水千山总是情》的时候才得以尽兴发挥,摇头晃脑、洋洋得意、自我陶醉了好一番。到了年级群星合唱《明天会更好》的时候,同样尴尬的局面又出现了,搞得一个个当初踌躇满志的人不知道如何是好,唱也不是不唱也不是。当时作为伴奏的陈导挺身而出,不动声色地对台下不明真相的观众喊话——都是一个学校的,大过节的,不就图一个乐嘛!那架势真有一点大家风度。你可能不知道,让他站场子的人里面,有很多后来都成了有头有脸的人物,像衙内就是。平时,他一有机会就要显示一下自己在艺术方面的修养,让你错觉着他的修养就是一种才华。在班里的《杂拌儿时间》里,他特意搬来

幻灯机,放着幻灯片给看得发了呆的我们讲西方的绘画——比如拉菲尔的圣母像,如此这般那般。当时我很惊奇——面对着一张凝固的画面,一个人竟然可以琢磨出那么多的说法。一直到了同一年的暑假,有机会看完青年出版社的通俗版《西方美术史》。越看越觉着书中的某些文字似曾相识,尤其拉菲尔画圣母像的那部分,直到最后终于想起来了——原来已经听陈导唠叨过一遍。顿时,感觉陈导的魅力和艺术的魅力一起大减。以至于多年以后,我对于在台面上侃侃而谈的人总是抱有不健康的怀疑——他们说出来的那些思想不见得都是他们想出来的、而很可能只是记下来的别人的东西。即便是这样,包括我在内的诸多同学还是没有怀疑他最终会成为真正的导演,一直到第二年的高考,那时才以某种方式踏进了北京电影学院的门槛。再后来,听逍遥不靠谱的传说,看过他亲自上阵拍的一个广告,形象是躲在一个阴暗的角落里和其他人一起做苦闷状地在抽烟卷,想来当一个导演远没有做一个艺术报告来得容易,要经历很多沧桑?很快又听到传言,说他去了德国专攻摄影,一

晃又是好多年,也不知道他的梦想有没有照进了他的现实?反正我觉着眼前的陈导还是很多的。

灯塔是我最喜欢的建筑类型,原型简单得不能再简单,但在现实里, 被表达得清晰、朴素、自然,又千变万化,为常人喜爱。周末安排了灯塔游,天气不算好,阴沉沉要下雨的样子。坐船乘风破浪前往的途中,海水冲溅到船头,淋在我们的身上,时间一长就觉得浑身发冷,一舔嘴自然是咸咸的味道。总共要看5个灯塔,都在Cheaspeak Bay。Sharps Island Light 被放在了行程的最后,船开到那里至少要一个小时,所以等待的时候就回到船尾吃东西。时间过得很快。等再回船头,那个黑褐色的家伙已经兀然站在你的面前,环绕一周、再来一周,众人吃惊地看着它前俯后仰左倾右斜的姿态,不知道说

什么好,只顾着拍照。原本直立挺拔的灯塔已经成了海水里的比萨斜塔,门敞着。鸥鸟们成了此地的主人,在上面停歇、在周围盘旋,等待着目击它真正倒下的一刻。一百年前,Sharps Island上有邮局、有旅馆、有人烟,海岛也一直被侵蚀着,直到沉没到现在这片海水以下。现在轮到了原本守护岛屿的这座灯塔,还是一样的命运,人们眼巴巴看着,却无能为力。船长说,该往回走了,等会儿有暴风雨。是的,天边的乌云集聚得很快、向这边移动得也很快。很快从这斜灯塔的背景,变成笼罩它的状态。这时我坐在船尾再看,那塔已经渺小得分不清是正是斜了。(本文完)

I have never been good with numbers so it wasn’t my intention to discover that every mem-orable city has 8 moments that cling to me like a small animal in the winter. After that discovery, the city name, her streets or the citizens that inhabit her will be easily forgotten. No matter how much time goes by or how hard other cities try with their circus tricks and other mirages.

I hold of my hometown. I knew from an early age that that mastering the path home was the

school with a friend, cautiously close to each other and yet not holding hands. She seemed to me so much older at the time, even if she was, maybe, eight years old. Together we took in the low houses, the old trees that peppered the sky.

our small agricultural city before lunchtime, the smell of food seeping out the windows. Together we discovered that the path home was a series of moments constructed by intimate details: a

building, an old woman sitting on the sidewalk waiting for death to pass her by. The moments I saw those details and made them mine, my hometown became eternally memorable.

We’ve all had a house that has sealed forever the idea of all the homes in the world. Some of the houses that I’ve visited, for a day or a month, have marked in my memory the value of the return, the protection from the world, from

The moment between me and my home hasn’t only been in my childhood home or my univer-isty apartment, not even in the houses where i’ve paid a rigorous monthly rent. That intimate moment between the home and me always takes me to Genoa and to the tiny apartment that hosted me while its owners traveled and I watched their cats “Button” and “Buttonhole”. We never became friends, the cats and I, but I always felt that going up the endless steps from

bottles, and opening the tall creaking door I would be home. I haven’t been back to Genoa yet, and I won’t even promise to return to its web of medieval streets drunk with a maritime past that won’t leave her in peace. When I go back, if i do, I want to relive the moment to enter in the apartment after going up the steep steps, leav-ing behind the train station and the world, only to feel what’s to arrive somewhere. Because ar-riving home is also the moment one truly arrives to the city.

There’s an alley, a passageway, a random street where cities keep the ordinary history. They seem to be near a historic monument or an architectural masterpiece where tourists wait in disorder to take pictures that will show their friends back home. It’s the randomness of topography or history that these alleys end up on the side, like an injured animal. The moment I discovered the alley Santa Catalina in the city of Cordoba in Argentina, I knew I would remember the city forever. Santa Catalina sits next to the main colonial cathedral, a masterpiece that has been preserved and enhanced by contemporary interventions, not a small miracle considering the brutality of so many interventions. Santa Catalina became the shortcut between the pedestrian street designed by Architect Roca -with his awards- and my favorite cafe behind the cathedral, always full of pigeons that waiters shooed away with more frustration than convic-tion. I don’t remember if the alley had a convent

there was less care, a secondary space to the neighboring restoration. It even had a forget-table mural and it was always tourist-free, it was mine. The moment I discovered the alley, I chose it every time over the famous pedestrian street. That was the moment I knew I would remember Cordoba forever.

architect’s home- to move somewhere else. That moment, that always happens while I’m storing my life in boxes, allows me to construct the one last image of the city I thought I knew so well. It’s the last curve in the distant road before it melts in an unrecognizable suburb. I would like to remember one city, any of the ones I’ve left behind but it must be my perennial immigrant status that fogs the idea of “coming” and “leav-ing”. It seems that I am always leaving the cities I remember. It is then that the city gives me an belated welcome; it bids me farewell to send me somewhere else that I’ll insist to call “home”.

I’ve always thought that memorable cities must have empty houses. Those houses, that seem ownerless from the distance, are still inhabited by ghosts clinging to the present that insists on ignoring them. The moment I picked my own empty house among all the others, I knew that the city and I had embraced. In Washington, DC where I live, my neighborhood if full of empty homes. All of them, from the smallest town in the endless argentinean pampa to the boisterous buenos aires. The moment is discovered that repetition of elements it became my compass. They settled a volatile north. In that moment I knew I wanted to see more of the same plazas, walking along more of the same streets only to discover the efforts citizens make to make it different.

I’ve always enjoyed puzzles, and not because

I know that the city around me, like a puzzle or a lego, will become whole without my anxiety chasing its parts. The discovery of the new city will be an unavoidable moment. To turn a corner, to cross the plaza, the construction of the whole city in my mind will always be out of my control. The missing pieces -the buildings,

if i don’t move them. All cities that I’ve visited have welcomed me this way, so inexplicably that makes it impossible to forget them or to get ost, ever again.

I hadn’t believed, until I wrote these lines, that the city has eight moments, gentle but impla-cable like early summer nights. But while I was writing I was visited by all the cities I’ve been to, I’ve lived in, I’ve gotten lost at. All of them who have forgotten me like a tourist or a student or a nobody. All those cities have been mine for a day or a lifetime. Even if I didn’t believe it that day, while walking down a street, past a house, seeking cover under a tree, that day, that mo-ment, the city and I belonged to each other.

S C R E E N D O O R

THIS SCREEN DOOR IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF AN EXISTING DOOR FOR THE FRONT OF MY 1910 CRAFTSMAN COTTAGE. WHEN I PURCHASED MY HOUSE THIS DOOR WAS BADLY IN NEED OF REPAIR. PREVIOUS OWNERS HAD NEGLECTED TO SAND OR EVEN RESTAIN IT OVER THE YEARS. I DREW DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S WINDOW AND DOOR PATTERNS AND THOUGH THAT HIS DESIGNS COULD WORK WELL FOR THE INLAID WOOD PATTERN. ALL OF THE INLAID PIECES ARE CONNECTED BY HALF LAP JOINTS AND THEN FASTENED TO THE FRAME WITH NEW TRIM PIECES.

THIS PROJECT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 40 HRS TO COMPLETE.

Hello from Rome to all our friends and family back home!

What a way to begin the year 2005! Arriving in Rome, Italy on Jan. 1st, on a chilly afternoon it strangely felt like we were return-ing home. All the butterflies we had were not from the unknown of living and traveling around It-aly, but rather from what COULD be of another 4 months of living and traveling around Italy!! Nev-er in our wildest dreams would we have imagined that we’d live in Rome for another semes-ter.... but in our best of dreams we wished! There is a story that if you go to the Trevi Fountain, toss a coinover your shoulder, and then make a wish to re-turn to Rome...your wish will be granted! Two years ago, Ryan and I went to the majestic Trevi Fountain to toss the coin. I am not sure what Ryan wished, but my wish was to return to Rome someday!

A quote from writer Nathaniel Hawthorne (regarding his visit to Rome in 1860): “When we have once known Rome...and left her...we are astonished by the discovery, by and by, that our heartstrings have mysteri-ously attached themselves to the Eternal City, and are draw-

ing us thither again, as if it were more familiar, more intimately our home, than even the spot where we were born.”

We have been in Rome for a few weeks now and have been busy getting settled back into the Ital-ian lifestyle again. As many of you know we will be writing a few descriptive emails through-out the semester of our experi-ences while we live and study in Italy. Hope you enjoy them! It is a great way for us to journal and share with you our interest-ing and sometimes weird experi-ences. From an architects’ per-spective, we are moved by how the architecture and urbanism of a city interacts with the people. How people use the city as their home. We havebeen seeing and experiencing new things and hope to share as much as we can with you along the way.

Ryan and I are living in the same building we lived in 2 years ago which is located on Vicolo delle Vacche (meaning the street of the cows). The building has been there since the 16th century, or possibly even earlier. Most of the residents of the apartment building are American students. However there are a few Romans

that live in the building as well. Two years ago we lived on the top floor of the building, which would be on the 5th level, tra-versing up 72 steps!

But now we live on the 2nd floor, traversing up only 18 steps. We live in a great location, very close to a beautiful church called San-ta Maria delle Pace and only a few blocks off of Piazza Navona. Right around the corner from our apartment is a little corner gro-cery store that has fresh bread and many of the essentials such as milk, cereal, etc. There are fabulous restaurants all around where we live, but we have en-joyed going to the market and grocery stores to pick up fresh food to make ourselves. Much cheaper and exciting that way. Occasionally we will go out to dinner or grab a quick lunch on the go. Things in Italy are expen-sive now because of the Euro, hopefully prices will get better. It is nice to be in Rome during these winter months because there aren’t many crowds or tourist groups.... it is as if we have the city to ourselves. Of course, we distinctly stand out in a crowd because of our Ameri-can features---light skin, light hair color, light eyes...but we try to blend in as much as possible. Also, we are trying to learn more

of the Italian language----day by day we are getting better! Sev-eral times we have beenstopped by tourists or even by Italians to get directions to someplace----and surprisingly we have actually been able to help! There is so much to learn and see while in Rome, you could live here for years and years and not see everything!

Not much has changed in Rome since we were living here two years ago. As we walk the streets of Rome we see many of the same street vendors that make their living selling bags, sunglasses, and postcards. Then there are the artists in Piazza Navona that magically create portraits and caricatures of chil-dren or couples on vacation. The other night we watched in awe one particular artist draw with pencil the portrait of a little Italian girl. It was as if the little girls’ face was already within the paper and all the artist had to do was scratch away to un-veil the hair, the eyes, the nose, the mouth, the chin...before we knew it there was a perfectly composed drawing on the paper of the little Italian girl----right before our eyes in only a matter of 15 minutes. It was like watch-ing Michelangelo paint the Sis-tine Chapel or sculpt his David in

marble----well, okay maybe not quite as incredible as that would have been to witness-----but it was indeed amazing. Occasion-ally I have heard artists describe how they create their art and it is amazing how they have the ability to SEE what everyone else cannot. That moment in Piazza Navona with the artist, it truly seemed like the little girls’ face was on the paper all along...and it seemed so simple for the artist to reveal from the fibers of the paper, making the portrait come to life!

Don’t let me forget the little Italian women with their fluffy dogs walking to the market in the morning for fresh herbs, fruits, vegetables, and bread...all are wonderfully the same, day in and day out. Orange, red, pink, yellow, and green colors found in Campo de Fiori either from the fruit stands, or from the flowers, or from the silk scarves that are for sale. The fish and meat sitting on ice, the pungent smells radiating. Sweet flowers, fresh fish, delicious herbs, baked bread, and the aroma of choco-late crepes being made at the gelatoria Italian ice cream shop. Your mouth waters as your eyes catch a glimpse of all these won-ders. Your eyes water as you see living art before you and realize

you have witnessed the beau-ty of humanity. Your stomach aches and your heart beats rap-idly as you smell and hear the music of Roman life.Similar to a gentle melody or a beautiful poem, the streets sing...somehow you feel like you can play a small part of this com-position.

Some of the amazing architec-ture that once was hidden un-der massive scaffolding to be cleaned, restored, or repaired are now unveiled and shine anew. It is as if the building has been released from some illness and can now sing the most beau-tiful songs, a gentle melody to the tune of the piazza or to the beat of the life on the street. You temporarily say goodbye to the glorious Renaissance or Ancient Roman architecture where day by day is slowly being covered with scaffolding----but eventu-ally will be cleaned and repaired, never knowing how long it will take before the building is un-veiled.

A quote about Rome by writer Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Fo-rum is a plain in the midst of Rome-a kind of desert full of heaps of stones and pits, and though so near the habitations of

men, is the most desolate place you can conceive. The ruins of temples stand in and around it, shattered columns and ranges of others complete supporting cornices of exquisite workman-ship, and vast vaults of shattered domes distinct with regular compartments, once filled with sculptures of ivory and brass.... Behold the wrecks of what a great nation once dedicated to the abstractions of the mind!”

Life in Rome can be compared to a masterfully composed piece of music. The Italian language is set to one rhythm. The streets are filled with loud scooters, small cars, fluffy dogs, tourists, and bustling Italians on their cell phones are all set to their own rhythm. The sounds from the sidewalk cafes where people sit to enjoy a good coffee or a good book, both of whichcreate another rhythm. The gyp-sies that play their music or beg for money. The nuns and priests that walk the streets to and from. The construction workers and craftsmen that drive their scoot-er to the jobsite with all of their building materials at their feet or on their back. (bags of concrete mix, wood supply, paint, etc.). The family of 3 that travel to-gether on their scooter through

the streets of Rome----dad driv-ing, mom behind, and child be-tween dad’s knees. The styl-ish Italian women that wear the highest healed shoes you’d ever seen before, somehow suc-cessfully walking ever so care-fully on the cobblestone streets miraculously without break-ing their ankle or their neck...or even their shoes! Seeing other Italian women who are desper-ately trying to bring back the fashion of the 80’s, leg warm-ers, bright colors of pink and aquamarine and yellow combi-nations. Sunglasses that cover not just the eyes but also the ENTIRE FACE! Seeing the young Italian men who look like they just stepped off the sets of West Side Story, Footloose, or even from the memorable show from the 80’s---FAME! Fashion and style in Italy can range from best to worst in a matter of seconds. Window displays are intricately designed, and changes every-day. The shopkeepers take pride in their window displays and have made it an Art. Masterfully done and carefully arranged to show off their wares.

We walk along the Tiber River and see in the distance St. Pe-ter’s Basilica with the large Na-tivity scene that sits in front in the piazza. The largest Nativity

scene that we have ever scene, which is still standing in the Pi-azza from Christmas holidays. Sunday mornings the streets are bustling with Italians who are on their way to church or Italians on their way to pick up pastries and bread for their Sunday dinner. For Ryan, and me on Sunday mornings we attend the Rome Baptist Church located just min-utes from the Pantheon. A small English speaking church (Ameri-can missionary church), filled with about 150 people from all over the world.... Americans, Italians, Filipinos, Australians, among others, and a variety of tourists. The service is wonder-ful and the church family is car-ing, friendly, and filled with the Holy Spirit. Just a few Sundays ago the visiting preacher was from church in a small town, Easley, South Carolina (which is close to Clemson University). It’s a small world after all!

⋯⋯Thanks for being a part of our journey! We hope that after this semester is over in May--- you will have fallen in love with Italy as much as we have! And for those of you that haven’t been to Italy----we hope that you will be able to live vicari-ously through us! We will set up a website for you to view some

of our pictures, more to come on that later.

Where do you wake up each day? What place do you call home?Many of us are fortunate to enjoy the comforts of a condi-tioned space, the conveniences of technology, clean running water at the tap of the faucet. We have memories of family din-ners, gatherings with friends, or simply bundling in a blanket in bed. Seems typical, but not for all. There are families living in poverty and substandard condi-tions who deserve better, a place that they can also call home.Home. In its very fundamental form, it is a shelter from natural elements. However, this place we define as home is so much more. The word “home” probably conjures up images of childhood memories and family gatherings or other experiences for many of us. It’s a place of warmth, security, and refuge – a little piece I was hoping to give a fellow “neighbor” (8,500+ miles away).Working with a local Habitat af-filiate, 11 of us from across the US and England made our way to Vietnam for a 2 week build. Little did we know, we would be attempting to complete a house from floor to roof in 4 days time⋯more on that later.After a brief orientation and introduction, we set to work alongside the future homeown-

er. She was a young widow with two cheerful children, ages 6 and 10. She earned a living by sell-ing vegetables and was renting a small room from a local family for her and the kids. The unsta-ble income she made was easily spent on rent, food, and books for her children to attend school. Certainly the currency value dif-fers vastly from the Vietnamese dong to the US dollar, but for a little perspective, her monthly earnings was equivalent to what some of us may earn in half a day of work.Stepping onto site, we were wel-comed with the sight of the con-crete house frame and a large tribute banner. A small creek ran beneath the concrete frame. Surrounding was the home of a broom weaver, a fruit garden, and tropical landscape of coco-nut palms and tall grasses. We were the guinea pigs for the Mekong Big Build, when 24 other homes would be built for families in southern Vietnam in a limited time frame. And so, the sched-ule described to us was planned for complete construction (the skin and bones) of the house in 4 days with finishing touches in the remaining time. Ambitious goal, but we were motivated. First task was to bring in sand to fill in the creek immediately un-der the house in order to level

from joking with one another to doing the hokey pokey with the kids. The neighborhood kids stopped by nearly everyday to lend a hand or simply enjoy the company. It’s also difficult to forget the man who rode past on his motorcycle while a couple of us were shoveling; he rode a short distance down the road before turning back around only to shovel a wheel barrow with us and continued on his way. A great sense of community. On the final day, we had a dedi-cation and the smiles on her chil-dren’s faces said it all. They now had a place of their own to call home, a place that represented hope, a place to grow and make

the floor. Over the next week, the work we performed ranged from transporting material to mixing mortar, laying brick, and painting. A small truckload was delivered at the street side each day where we loaded our wheel-barrows with gravel and sand to bring in. Nothing went to waste; plastic water bottles were reused as containers to hold paint; even the cement bags were laid flat as a moisture barrier in the floor.

The heat was a challenge at times, not to mention, it was also the rainy season and the oc-casional downpours prevented us from laying brick. Regardless, there was never a dull moment

memories for years to come.I started on this little adventure with the hope of making a small difference in someone’s life and along the way, I gained so much more – newfound friend-ships, inspiration, appreciation, priceless memories & an experi-ence of a lifetime. A humbling sense of awe and gratitude over-came me to be in the presence of such hardworking and caring people. This experience was a reminder of our basic human nature, of purpose, of what mat-ters, of how small & insignificant we may be in this vast world, yet we are someone, something. With a simple gesture, every one of us has the potential to alter

the perspective and course of another life in an inexplicable way.

昨天听到说士兵出征前要将行装收拾井井有条,不要有零散锁碎。便想起自己也该收拾一下自己的思绪了。今天下午坐在书桌前,把脑袋里的东西一一掏了出来,摊在桌面上仔细掂量一番。有的就没再放回去。等我离开时,竟然觉得从头到脚都轻松许多。好像又要准备下一个路程。推开办公楼大门晚霞扑面,驾车回家,怀带一片晚霞。回家把它抹到孩子们的脸颊上,涂到饭桌布上,盖在身上,做进梦里。因为明天又要起程。(本文完)

结婚快二十年了,几乎每年十一都会跟老公回他的老家,一个在唐山郊区的小村子。除了去拜访他的舅舅,我认为更多的是去“打劫”——把新鲜的农作物搬上车,运回北京。而且每每都很感慨,为什么老公的舅舅家不在北京郊区,这样更方便我们去“打劫”。 去了十几次之后,给我不同的感受越来越多。 首先,现在的气候越来越热,不用科学家们检测,我就以身可以试出。以前去都得穿秋裤,穿漂亮的夏装想也别想。而现在除了早晚,白天的大部分时间穿短袖都没问题。不知道是不是温室效应,但单从这点上来说,地球的环保问题真是很严重了。 其次,眼瞅着跟我同岁的弟妹越来越步入中年妇女的行列,岁月在她身上留的痕迹一年多过一年。也是,家里两个在上学的孩子,哪里还有精力去保养、去关注自己。大部分农村妇女都是如此吧。 再次,以前最怕脏,怕麻烦的我,现在却享受着在农村干农活的乐趣。随便做个简单的便饭要经过以下程序:压水、刷锅、刷碗、到地里摘菜、洗菜、切菜、

抱柴、烧火、炒等一系列地活动,吃完了还要收拾,总之,一直在动,这是我们这些一直生活在大城市里的人最缺乏的,也是我以前不屑为之,现在却趋之若骛的。 最后,是农村的教育问题。学校都放假了,所以教育水平我不得而知,但从女性结婚早、生子早这点就发现,虽然很多人嘴上说着要孩子读书,但因客观和主观的条件所限,很多孩子并没有意识到教育对自己的重要性。先生的表姐跟我说,女孩子大约十八九岁就会结婚,如果不到合法年龄,两个人先生活在一起,到年龄再领证。如果有了孩子就要,等领了证再补办生育证,这些只要得到村干部的首肯即可。 听到这表姐说这些,我忙问她的儿子呢?表姐说,她儿子十七了,在内蒙工作,不想读书了,而且有个女孩子很喜欢他,他想年底把那个女孩子带到家里来。我赶紧叮嘱表姐,千万别答应,别这么早就把自己圈在家庭里,而且十几岁的孩子思想还没定性,以后的变化还大着呢,还是等等看吧,表姐也赞同这点。 如果这个地方的教育跟得上,家长和孩子都认为一个人的读书

希望更多的孩子能够通过教育,有选择生活的能力和权力。(本文完)

很重要,可能就不会发生上面这些事情了。 最让我感慨的是邻居四姐家,新盖的大瓦房,十几万,这个数字在农村是相当大了,可能是他们一辈子的收入。四姐是个能干的农村妇女,比我大五六岁,说话直爽。最大的三间正房给了儿子娶媳妇用,自己和老公住在了前面的小配房里,乍一看,给我的感觉是一个天上,一个地下。孩子们住的房子,宽敞、亮堂,父母住的地方相对窄小、阴暗。“为什么会这样?”我很是不平,四姐却跟我说,农村都是这样,父母一辈子就是给儿子盖出一所大房子,娶妻生子,就是幸福了。而有一天,他们也会像父母这样,给自己的孩子盖房子,一代代传下去。由此,我想到上面提到的女孩子早结婚的问题,一代代人就这么在农村过一辈子,虽然从某种角度来说,这也是一种幸福,但在还没有见识外面的世界,还不知道世界上有更多的生活方式时就选择了这一种,在我认为是一种损失。在经历了或见过了多种生活方式后,选择这种无可厚非,但在没有的情况下不得不走这条路,就是父母教育的不当了。我

Wang,Hai:Two Doors in Rome

记忆深处有些模糊的是罗马城里普通的两扇门,分别代表着住所和学校,当年曾经无数次往返其间,400米,步行5分钟。(MAP-01,02,03)

15年前从GateA拖着重重的行李离开这座城市时,行李的轮子在清晨的石路上撞击的声音仿佛还萦绕在耳畔,但形象上的记忆已经模糊了。那天从花市广场出来,天色很晚了,带着一家大小想去寻找当年故居,已经找到了,但有些不敢确定了。路名太不好记得住,门牌号码倒还记得是个很吉利的数字。当年在这个门里的三楼的一个公寓里蜗居过几个月,室友是来自意大利、英国、肯尼亚的同学,一个小联合国了,往事已经过往云烟。当年午休时曾经看着厨房窗外的教堂(Sant’Andrea della Valle)的穹顶发呆画水彩。总觉得这个穹顶不俗,后来才知道部分出自Borromini大师的手笔。(photo-00,01。可惜私人宅邸,上不去楼了,看不到梦中穹顶,只好在网上找了Photo-00)

想象一天早上懒觉睡醒,对面楼上的旅馆的阿姨都快打扫完卫生,门口的面包店、花店都开门很久了。出门右拐,走Via dei Chiavari,其实是一个小巷子,经过一个开阔的空间,这里古罗马有一个剧院,现在的街巷和广场按照遗迹布置,还保留着半圆的格局。(photo-02,03,04,05)

再往前不远,Via dei Chiavari变宽了。右手是教堂(Sant’Andrea della Valle)的侧墙。左手有一些餐馆,还有室外餐桌。曾经在这里吃过一次午餐,不敢恭维,不知现在是否好些,还是一如既往地只是就赚游客一次钱。当年经常深夜从教室回去,在这里有不少微醺的游客,一次一个醉鬼还向我打听哪里找酒吧和Girl。(photo-06,07)

再往前是条大马路,Corso Vit-torio Emanuele II,公共汽车、小汽车、摩托车各种车辆呼啸往来,这条路连接火车站和梵蒂冈,以小偷多而臭名昭著的64路公共汽车就跑这条线,还好当年没着道儿。对比一下1748年的Nolli Map,这一带从那时起的街道格局几乎没太大变化,只是这条街道拓宽了不少。(MAP-03)

小心地过了马路,是一个广场,中间有个喷泉,如今过多的车辆让这里成为一个转盘。这时可以回头看一看教堂的正立面。当年可以随便找个小咖啡店,孔乙己似地排出几枚硬币,数目不小有1200里拉,买一小杯Cappucci-no,要多放糖,一块甜点,算早餐了。(photo-08,09)

顺着广场右前方的小巷子走两步,左手边的一条小巷子,有很好的View—Saint Ivo Alla Sapien-za的尖顶。只多看一眼,就满足

了,伟大的Borromini给罗马留下多少记忆。当年曾遍访他在罗马的杰作,回想着他与Bernini的恩恩怨怨和悲剧人生,令人唏嘘。(photo-10,11)

前方的阳台内是本科生的教室,经常看到几个学生抽烟。小巷穿过一个拱门,左转,就是Gate B了。在门前,也想敲门进去看看学弟学妹,还有现在的老师。但想想物是人非,不进去也罢。数字时代留张影很方便,想当年还计算相机内的胶片数量呢。刚才转来转去,小孩觉得很无趣,还是赶紧带小孩往前走吧,转个弯去看万神庙、吃冰激凌,当一次初来罗马的过客。(photo-12,13,14)

1988大一,孤独在自己的上铺付出一周的熄灯前一小时用陌生的针线活设计缝织完成了这一非对称的奇思沟搭的“建筑学”马甲,有13个兜,5组拉链粘扣,有专门的眼镜带和计算尺带,分类插笔25只...为当时初生牛犊的激情和干劲积发的创造力鼓舞,真像重整自己的工作室。

洽逢我的天大建筑89级同学毕业20周年聚,大家都在分享互动彼此共同的回忆,我同宿舍(88)的挚友啊,鹏举,赵林,雷建,亲爱的小六,你们可能记得学潮后激动一醉高呼的傻大汉,

应不知那个孤僻的残破墙角独梦的我在缝啥?

无言岁月有情人,数十年游子对不起的唯自己的母亲。姥姥去世后的第一个暑假,落漠的打开姥姥的一直不愿触碰的衣柜,发现在的第一件,却是叠放整洁,喚醒我以上记忆的这个马甲。

当我熟悉了世道的驳烦,遗忘了爱与最初的力量,亲人,无论在哪里,在天堂,都帮我记挂着。

那天早晨,天略微阴沉,但我还是决定去了。 一路上,到处打探,总算找到了去稻香湖的近路。令我吃惊的是,不管怎么走,只要方向没错,路终归是要汇聚在一处的。 出了城,一座土丘突然出现在眼前,转过一座小桥,便上了一条幽静的公路。 路旁伴行的是一条小河—永定河。另一侧是青山。路旁的大树在路的上空罩住。 因为是中午,路上车少人稀。这里一扫城里的喧闹,噪杂,闷热。空气都是清爽的。 我神气地在路中央骑着,车轮飞快地转,车箭一般地行。 河边隔一段就有一个钓鱼的,躺在树下,听着树上的蝉鸣,和草丛中蝈蝈的低吟。 我抬头望去,山上有一串白点,那是勇敢的挑战者,白点湮没在云霞里,我真想跳下车,奔向山巅。 鸟儿在唱,车儿在驰。 转过几个村庄,在一片原野里,我找到了这个天然公园,周围是青纱帐。 进去,没有建筑。首先看到的是绿树掩映下的湖水,远处白茫茫的一片。那是一群白鹅。以为打

渔的老汉划着小船,在波光荡漾的湖水上收着渔网。 “老伯伯,鱼多么?” 象是对我的回答,一条一尺多长的鱼,在水面上漂跃,溅起无数个雪白的浪花。 湖水很清。很多地方狭窄。两旁都是古树。倒下来,树枝沾着水面,郁郁葱葱。一只小船划过去,便不见了。这是多么神奇的世界。 这里既有多瑙河的风光,又有白洋淀的色彩。 过了一座小桥,视野一下开阔起来。一片绿绿的草原,有几个蒙古包,远远望去绿中零星几点白。几个游人骑着膘马,弯弓射箭。再往前行,老远看见几股炊烟,袅袅升起。顺着飘来的音乐声,转过一片树林,露出一片地,几个年轻人在草地上跳着春舞。旁边,炉火正盛,锅里正“咕咕咕”冒水泡,露出炖鸡的香味。 蓝蓝的天,青青的草,神秘的湖。哪里,自然的美,纯洁的美,朴素的美。

今天0:05分,leo猫离开了。从04年1月19日到现在,10岁。

腹腔内一大两小肿瘤,小如蛋,大如拳。医生说应该有近一个月了,居然不知!直到昨晚出差回来,发现他呕吐、趴在地上,眼无神、腿无力,很弱的声音哀鸣。送诊两个医院,几个医生均暗示已经无力回天,衰败竟然如此迅速!

猫是忍耐力极强的,一月来进食排便不见异常,实际所有生化指标已经指向了终点。无奈之下,选择了安乐,就在我眼前。

当医生注射之后,虚弱的他一动不动,直到告诉我心跳已经没有了。一直这样,安静的离开。当我捧着医生帮我包裹好的小小的身体离开后,夜晚中才泪如雨下。

借了医院里的铁锹,把他埋在小区旁边的花园里。

我该怎么告诉糖妹妹?怎么告诉她平时喜欢缠着她的腿的leo猫已经不在了?怎么告诉她那个看见虾就疯狂的leo猫已经不会动了?

这恐怕是宠爱小动物最不能接受也无法回避的时刻吧。稍稍心安的是这十年全家人都宠爱他,安逸渡过十年。

有一次他溜出去,全家人找了一天未果,以为从此不见,没想到第二天自己蹲在家门口。算是他唯一一次不成功的离家出走。

有一次在卫生间地上大解,然后把毛巾拖过来盖上,以为你看不见就算了。同样的事情在衣橱里,床上都干过。让你哭笑不得。

他的父亲是一只冠军猫,顶着盛名,我们嘲笑他这辈子凭着一张脸混饭吃,他也不以为意。

你在沙发里看书,他会爬上来蜷在你大腿上。你在桌子上看报纸,他会直接坐在报纸上,你就只好看他。家人吃饭,他会跳上餐桌在另一边看着。

凡此种种,枚举不胜。回头想想,回忆中还是乐趣远超气恼处。所以leo猫在天堂应该会一如既往吧。是以记之。(本文完)

高二一有人能将全班人名按学号顺序一一道出,并且能倒背如流,这不能不说是一绝。难道说这是一种嗜好?最起码,说明他对同学们的熟悉,还有,便是有心人的一片真情。 我最初认识徐宇斌,是在开学后数学小组的考试上。考完后,由于试题不多,能做出大半便是定了乾坤。反正是课外小组,做不出也无妨大局。唯有他为一道题的得失懊恼不已。劝慰他的同时,他回答:“你不知道,我这个人想干一件事情,就非干好不可。不然,心里难受。”从那时起,我便感到了他最可贵的一种品质——自强。 在一班的历史上,他的热心更是无所不在。运动会上,哪怕肌肉拉伤,也要大吼一声全力跳出个跳远第二。4x100缺人,他说:“我上!”以至赛场上丢了一套运动服,他还为班里成绩不突出而遗憾。足球赛上,异常消瘦的他又守起了大门。漏进了一个球,虽然有人责怪他但他从不埋怨别人,只把责任算在自己身上。以后的赛场上,他常常踢前锋,每次必跑得胃痛不已,体力耗尽,方才罢脚。听其他人议论,他的球技不算出类拔萃。但我看到,

他那要球不要命的拼劲儿,横扫千军的铲球,常使对方望风披靡。 他的这种异乎寻常的热心,认真,却遭到过不少人的讥讽,他不会从耳不闻的。按他的秉性,受到嘲笑,也不能一笑了之。但他想的是如何在提高自己,真正为班出大力,而从不想袖手旁观。仅此一点,对集体最热心的,当首推徐宇斌。

在桌子上铺一张纸用整个下午的时光 写几行诗工作和电脑拿走了我的灵感时间也不能成就诗歌的缘分你摸摸我脸上的皱纹 和微笑说不可同日而语了我端酒杯离去鼓出的肚腩在衣服的下面隐藏得还好我在避免一杯酒距离的凝视避免一些回忆的段落荒凉的下午,时针指在3:40剩下的时间仍可以让我想到很多2008.4.20

看到K的来信,尘封已久的记忆忽然浮现眼前。大学毕业,出国,读书,找工作,养孩子,搞到终身教职。一直在奔波,努力。不敢回视,驻足,总怕从想像中的悬崖上掉下来。

虽已安定下来,还很少谈论以前。一是没有听众,二是显老,三是不敢直面逝去年华。在须臾与转瞬之间,只有莫名的怅惘。想一想,只有现在留笔,才会在下个时间回首时,心里有些底。

第一次见到K,是大学第五年在部院实习。当时也不知哪里实习好,乱打乱撞去了部院。一则离学校不远,二则跟建设部相关,三是部院没有废话就接收了。似乎还曾一闪念想到,利用实习的机会,毕业后在部院某个职啥的。但后来听说,部院当时人满为患,那年招人的可能性很小。我这在建设部没啥关系的,就更没想了。

到了部院,也没有人告诉要干什么,要听谁的。开始就随便打打下手,有啥干啥。幸好用过CAD画图,不算落伍。只是得用别人的电脑,很不方便。那年代,电

脑很贵,一般人是没有的。

部院里当时建筑师中年轻人很多,许多是刚毕业不久,还没有什么架子,大家说着做着都满自由的。

对每个人的背景也不清楚,大多是北京人。听说有些是有关系的,没关系进部院,应该不易。听说有些在外火热炒更,这些人上班时,会神不守舍,若有所思。有些在外地做项目,出差。有的人有病,也不知真的假的,刚毕业怎么就病的不能天天上班呢?总有几个人时不常的出现一下,神出鬼没的,像是有不少秘密。

在部院干了一个星期,搞不清谁是领导,谁是管事的。管理上乱乱的,没有头绪,好像与学校差别不大。只是设备先进些,工作环境好些,冬天屋里挺暖和的,好像还给实习的管顿午饭。专业外,最管事的似乎是秘书。在同一层,有一个男的,一个女的。好像都有些背景,那个女秘书的后台应该更硬些,说话像是小学老师。男的更精通办公室政治,会给实习生发点小东西。两人都

知杀鸡给猴看的道理,我们这些实习的,偶尔会被小“杀”一下,已警众人。

开始与K在不同的办公室,主要用CAD做初步,竞标。一两个星期后,被拉去为一个中年人X帮忙,也就有更多机会去K的办公室。

在办公室尽头,坐着大名鼎鼎的建筑师C,应该不到四十岁。声音洪亮,远远就知道他的存在,见面倒是很少。 听说C刚刚以出色建筑师身份,周游列国,参观著名设计,体会十分深刻。自己还有个捷达私车,可以经常外出活动。那时候出国和有私车是两件不可思议的事情。而两件同事发生,概率就更小了。想来C是个重要人物。

C手下好像有一批有志向,有干劲的年轻建筑师,由他直接培养,组队设计。在长长的办公室里,有三四个大隔断。每个大隔断里有四五个位置,而C所在的隔断特别大,可以容纳下五六个建筑师。

大家坐的位置好像不是随机的。

似乎离C越近,就越能感受他的能量辐射。所以他手下的几个年轻建筑师都坐在他所在的大隔断里。至于C在做些什么,我也没有太深究。

让我干活的中年人X,则坐在办公室入口处,是距离C的最远点。是不是害怕能量辐射呢?他长得黑黑的,还特爱抽烟,大冬天的老得开窗户。似乎努力避免,但时不时地露出北京腔。每天下午都要抱着收音机,合目静听十五分钟的股市信息。又听说此人专业一般,且给我的全是施工图细部。工作的热情少了大半。无法转到其他组,便常常躲在另外一件办公室看书,看英文。

而K坐在办公室中间的那个隔断里,与C不远不近的地方,似乎是想,一方面可以接受C的能量辐射,一方面可以在关键时逃脱。而且K好像不是C的大将,是属于神出鬼没,不常露脸的那种。搞不清楚是有外出项目,是有铁关系,还是老去炒更。

与K有相似性的还有一些,都表面懒散,内心有根紧绷的弦,所以偶尔说说话。说的与专业无关,

多是闲扯。K比我大几岁,当时瘦瘦的,常穿个蓝夹克,梳个小分头,喜欢半眯眼睛,嘿嘿轻笑。外表平静,内心有不少北京人的傲骨。虽然是北京人,有但没有太多北京腔。他总是神秘兮兮的,有些话只说半句。什么原因?我也没太在意。

实习一个多月也就不了了之了。未来是一团雾水,没想到以后会与K再见。

一直想要出国留学,原因有三:第一,在大学里稀里糊涂混了四年,上进心很强,好奇心十足;但因师资的局限,无法满足向学的愿望。二是受不了北京冬天的空气污染和室内寒冷;年年都要咳嗽一阵,腿要肿上一阵。三是充满对外界的好奇心,对学习英文的愿望。动力原始于六四凌晨的天安门广场;看到剑拔弩张,刀光枪影,外国记者们忽然撤退,而我却在关键时刻无法语言沟通,获悉原因,令人愤懑。

在部院实习时,也时常是吊儿郎当。因为决心已下,准备出国,有破釜沉舟之心。至于能否出去,心里实在是没有数。首先是

钱,没有奖学金,无法生存。其次是英语,GRE和TOEFL是两大关。再者,周边人出国的凤毛麟角,只知道是前途坎坷。

与大多数准备出国的人不同,我先准备GRE,在开拓上课。当时是新东方主导天下,开拓人少,好像还便宜些。而且开拓就在人大里,离家近,也就上了。

第一天在开拓,惊讶地见到K。还是那身蓝衣服,还是神秘兮兮的,还是喜欢嘿嘿的低笑。课间休息,K凑近身,小声叮咛,可别跟部院的人说在准备GRE。当时跟部院几乎断了联系,没有思考就答应了。之后还帮K保守了几个小秘密,至于是什么,我也忘了。

GRE课开始还常常看见K的身影,过了些日子,就像在部院时一样,K渐渐消失了。听说是项目很多,太忙了。而我则是铁了心,没留后路,虽然前途未卜。

GRE考试前一天,看到了两年未见的蒙冤入狱的亲戚,兴奋之余,着凉,发低烧。考试时晕晕的,感觉要脱水,但还算顺利。

只是要等两三个月,笔试成绩才能下来。没有电子邮件,互联网,只能通过蜗牛信件,看来1996年是无法入学了。三心二意地找了找工作,因为有北京户口,很快有两三家单位同意录用,还写了接收函。当时,接收函都是人事处手写的,要盖几个章,挺麻烦的。并没有计划上班,还麻烦别人,内心一直内疚。幸好这些单位,对我都没有什么吸引力,没去也没有太多遗憾。

只是花了无数时间与交大人事周旋档案。大学快毕业,外地同学都想留京,分个好单位,都想与学校搞好关系,所以也嘴快,问来问去。我是没有刻意遮掩,八个人一个宿舍,不允许挂帘子,想遮掩也没招。而人事处也耳尖,知道我准备出国,硬要我8000块出路费。理由是我要去铁道部之外单位。国家没有明文政策,这是学校的土政策。再说学校也没有给我分配个工作。这还不算是12000块的国家培养费。只有到了九月开学时间过了,看我没有动静,在父亲的疏通下,才给我打了个5折。整个一帮强盗!看来神秘兮兮点,有好处。

五月拿到的GRE成绩还好。之后没有太多准备,就考了十月TOEFL。人大考点的耳机又不好,成绩不到590。虽然过线了,但是过意不去。再考,就要明年五月份了。在家晃悠着不是滋味,在学校里跟学弟们挤着也不是个事。于是出去找点活干,也赚点钱。

喜欢电脑,而且电脑效果图还是个新鲜事物,可以临时干干,决定找个地方干干。水晶石离部院很近,我对那里地理较熟悉,就先递了个申请,并被面试两次,感觉不错。只是迟迟没有下话,又快到元旦了,挺着急的。便找到阿毅,一拍即合,第二天上班。之后去过几次水晶石出图,好像认出我来。是不是怀疑我是阿毅内线,没找我,就不清楚了。

阿毅和水晶石是竞争对手,水晶石的场面大,人手多,做的杂。而阿毅的产量不高,作坊不大,但很精。双方虽是竞争对手,还有联系,相互推荐客户。一般都是我们向他们推荐,因为我们的人手不足。

阿毅刚搬到三环外新的办公室,心气很高。几个小项目后,很快就接手了中国现代城的竞标项目。四个竞标的设计所,全都找到我们来做。时间不够,只接受了北建院和广电院的设计。建院和清华的别人做。几个不眠的星期之后,北建院最后中标了。十分高兴,与建院的设计组成员集体出去撮了一顿。

而广电院没有中,总设计师拒绝给我们10000块 的劳务费。在桌子底下递去了1500块之后,10000块 的劳务费就顺利到手了,甚至还超过的我们要的。

一切显得十分顺利,甚至有心留在国内与阿毅共创天下。没多久,公司的责权利不清,很快就出现错综复杂的矛盾。打架的打架,离婚的离婚,搬家的搬家。幸好我在准备TOEFL,暂时离开了公司。回来的时候,阿毅已经搬到另外一个地方,听说有法律纠纷,阿毅的父亲都从大老远跑过来。很乱。

又见了K两次,还是神秘兮兮的,总是要我保守这秘密那秘密的。我也搞不清是什么,只是小心而

已。通过与学校的过节,了解到了保守秘密的重要性。

阿毅的绝活之一是自建的图形库。有一两个人从阿毅走后,自己做阿毅的的图库做表现图。在建院,都说我在阿毅做,有不少人来询问图形库的细节,K没有问,似乎也不关心电脑表现图。帮我签了几个字,很有建筑师的风格,是我写不出的。似乎还请我吃了饭。少有请人帮忙,还蹭人饭的。

再见就是一年只后回国了。在外

面的一个小馆,K没有太大变化,只是没有计划出国了。谈了很多专业之外的事。K很忙,似乎秘密也少了,或是不需要我保密了?

再次听说K,不知道从哪里。是同系的F么?知道结婚了,还是个美女高材生,肯定又是秘密了,也就没有详问。

又听说来了美国,去的是名校圣母大学。试着联系了几次,要不就没有回音,要不就只言片语。也搞不清是在美国,还是回去了。

去过西边的DC几次,后来才知道他在DC。

终于实现他乡遇故知。工作环境更好了,屋子更大了,还在乔治城。K的工作台上有几张手绘图纸,像是Mackintosh的钢笔素描。办公室里没有人,很大。要是在C的工作室,C应该在窗户边,而K会在入口。

我们终于没有在要保守的秘密了。在乔治城大学随意穿行,近看Potomac河上波浪起伏,远看Kennedy中心。去瑞典的大使

馆,也是任意游走,没遇到黑脸的门卫。没有谈太多建筑,我已经是外行了。知道不都是一帆风顺。

最后又是我蹭饭。坐在C&O Canal边,和风细雨,浸润无声。

一杯酒下肚,是须臾还是弹指,也搞不清了,都融在酒里。只知道,这一晃就是十二年。下回再见,一定还要喝高些,可能有秘密的东西就都没了。

Zhao, ZhongGui:印度过城四则1.Qutb Minar:一个王朝的前世今生

这座73米的世界最高的砖石塔,是七八百年前,五个短命的德里苏丹王朝在德里郊区留下的印记。作为印度文化复兴的重要时期,德里苏丹王朝留下了繁多的建筑音乐和文学作品。13世纪,成吉思汗统一南亚的步伐被阻挡。蒙古人在北印遇到了更善战的德里苏丹。而100多年前来自中亚的穆斯林则幸运得多。1175年,Ghurid王朝的国王Muhammad Ghori率领成千忠诚的奴隶,从阿富汗中部Ghor,经过巴基斯坦,攻城拔寨一路征战到北印度,给穆斯林在印度大陆七百年的统治建立了基石。奴隶出生的将领Qutbuddin Aibak攻下德里后,1192年开始修建此塔。相传是为驻地德里的苏菲派圣人Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki所建。 1206年,老王Ghori赴Lahore平叛回程中为人暗杀。他手下的几个英勇的奴隶把疆域瓜分了。 Aibak成为统治北印度的第一个苏丹王朝,Mamluk王朝的苏丹。Aibak四年后在玩马

球时暴毙,工程搁置了。1230年他的继任Iltutmish往上加盖了三层。148年后的一次雷电又将塔损坏。后来的国王Firoz Shah修复时,用大理石把顶层建为两层。Lodi国王也对石塔进行修缮,1503年,再次遭遇雷击。Qutub Minar塔身底部直径14.3米,顶部直径2.7米,379内部的台阶能把人带到塔顶。色彩斑斓的红砂岩上用古兰镌刻,讲述了建塔的历史。塔身截面特别,从下到上一次为:圆方交错,圆形组合,方组合,圆形。这是一个足以令金茂大厦颤抖的摩天大楼。从远处看Qutub Minar,让人怀疑这构筑是不是人类所为。在1526年,更为强大的蒙兀儿王朝建立了,它将给印度大陆带来两百多年的辉煌,给世人留下象泰姬陵这样的奇迹巨建。(本文完)

1568年,蒙兀儿王朝的阿克巴大帝在沙漠跋涉,路过沙漠时拜访苏菲派圣人Salim Chishti求子,圣人预言他将有三子。很快夫人便生育一子。感恩的阿克巴决定在圣人栖息洞穴附近的山脊上建新都,把都城从原先的阿格拉南迁至此。年轻的大帝三年即把新都建出了模样。这是一座用波斯原则但印度教、耆那教和伊斯兰的元素并存的宫殿群,包括觐见厅、枢密厅、信仰厅、鼓乐堂、档案厅、皇帝和几个皇后的居所。宫殿边上是面向麦加的大清真寺,Salim死后墓建在寺院中央。这座阿克巴雄心建起十四年后又被神秘抛弃的废都,是伊斯兰城市规划的经典。柯布西耶和路易康都曾造访并受到启发,贝聿铭接到卡塔尔多哈博物馆设计任务时,先想到的就是Fatehpur Sikri。

Faterhpur Sikri宫殿群没有遵循典型的伊斯兰布局,如泰姬陵那样建筑和花园对称地分布在中心轴线两边。它的建筑布局是非对称的,大小各异开放空间,私密性分等级的院子从斜向一层层环环相锁的,在其间行走,伴着标高

升降,尺度和体量随之变化。建筑物细密繁复的石刻和浮雕让人赞叹伊斯兰的工艺,单一的材料红砂岩将整体统一,群落空间堪比希腊卫城。

Diwan-I-Khas枢密厅是一个非常特殊的房子,二层挑空仅有对角线的石桥,方形的屋子中央是一棵柱子,支撑着二层的桥的交点。不仅在蒙兀儿建筑中少见,也是世界上独一无二的平面布局。谁会在柱子上宝座盘坐?何种场合?房子就是一个小世界,仿佛看到阿克巴端坐于二层宝座上,冥想他是世界之王。

在北印度冬季的微风中,行走在Fatehpur Sikri的院落,仿佛看到回廊间穿梭的婢女,演歌台上起舞的女优,月夜在亭台上把酒的阿克巴大帝,400多年前的历史凝固于斯。

Zhu, LiZhi: 品西游续- 吸 烟 趣 闻

深秋午后,暖阳洒满窗前,既无虫鸣也无鸟语,四下静悄悄。忽然想起西天取经途中的师徒四人。一个奇怪的想法油然而生,试想:如果烟草从唐代就传入中国,那么师徒四人到底谁会吸烟呢?问题一出不禁暗喜,遂给几位好友发短信求证。使我更加惊喜的是居然三人的回答各不相同,文:佛家子弟不吸烟的!如果非要吸我认为是唐僧,因为他在整个途中最无事可做,他的作用是到了目的地以后。骁:我认为是沙僧,因为他最闲。忠:应该是孙猴和八戒,因为他俩散漫。

我不认为吸烟是无事可做、闲和散漫的原因。其实一个长期吸烟并形成瘾的人,吸第一支烟是周围相互影响的结果。试想年轻时代你特别敬佩你的父亲或是你父亲身边的人,因为他们吸烟。你信任他们又依赖他们,对于他们的行为你是羡慕有佳。忽然有一天你父亲或他身边的人说:如今你也大了,吸一支烟吧!一来二去便吸吸上了,最终成了瘾。或者说你特别欣赏一个好同学,你处处以他为榜样,而他吸烟,因此你离吸烟就不远了。小痞子也

一样,一个人一心想进入痞子圈儿,首先得同流,于是也就吸上了。所以我不赞成吸烟是因为无事可做寂寞、闲和散漫的结果。话说师徒四人如果必须设计有人吸烟,那么就不可能是一个人。如果说谁不吸烟的话,只有一人,那就是孙猴。

首先说玄奘他会吸烟,但烟瘾不大。这是他所处的工作环境决定的。他身处中央政治思想研究会,兼任调查与研究会理事和中科院研究员。本身是一个学识渊博的文化人,有知识,深知吸烟有害。但他的工作性质经常接触高层领导并夜以继日地开会,会场内既有同级更有上级,在这样的文山会海之中不吸烟是不可能的。一旦有领导递给一支烟怎好拒绝,久而久之他便会吸了。但玄奘又是一个信念坚定、自控能力极强的人,所以有克制。对于吸烟只是会,没瘾,平时想不起来吸烟。

我认为师徒四人中烟瘾最大的应该是沙僧,他原本在机关事务办,基本上是负责日常接待和服务工作,级别不高,奢望不大,但平常接触好烟好酒,因为吸着

方便,又不花钱,所以烟瘾较大。

沙僧是一个中规中矩、谨小慎微的人,尽管他鄙视八戒,但他还是佩服老孙、尊敬师傅的。因此他吸烟时必然会让烟,因为师傅会吸烟也就接了。烟草在当时是极高级的奢侈品,只有极高级的首长才能搞到。孙猴草蜢出身对于烟草只是听说过,根本没有接触,他不会吸。八戒曾经见过但没有机会尝试,所以他两都不会吸烟。但是西行考察团刚刚组建,出于好奇也都欣然接了一支。会吸烟的人都知道起初吸第一支烟的时候都不舒服,不是呛就是咳,或是头晕。孙猴勉强吸了半支就头晕的不行,手不听使唤,不慎烧焦了几根毫毛,可把老孙心疼坏了,把剩下的半支烟一扔,什么破玩意儿,发誓再也不吸了。孙猴是一个说到做到、我行我素、不受任何人左右的人,所以打那儿起,还真的就没有再吸。

八戒其实也是第一次吸烟,感觉也不舒服,可是看到师傅和沙僧吸得悠闲自得,又看到孙猴出糗,于是坚持把烟吸完,并假惺

惺地说:“这烟味道不错,沙师弟是以前的存货吧”。这话里有话,言外之意是说你孙猴享尽了齐天之福,再能,可吸烟之福享不了吧。沙僧连忙说:“的确是存货,就这一盒了,平时舍不得吸,还多亏这流沙河了,要不然烟早干了。今天是个重要日子,我正式报到入伙,才特意拿出来,孝敬师傅和师兄,让大家尝尝”。

玄奘吐出最后一口烟,将烟蒂捻灭,徐徐地说:“烟草是外贸商品,稀奇金贵,但吸烟伤身体,不是好习惯,能不吸就不吸,能少吸就少吸,要吸也别吸次的。悟静你负责日常生活,这事你就看着安排吧!”

老孙还在掰扯他那几根烧焦的毫毛,忙说:不吸了,不吸了。八戒和沙僧都听出了师傅的深意,连连称:善哉!善哉!阿弥陀佛!

八戒虽然知道吸烟有害,本来又不会吸烟,但他抗拒不了唾手可得的便宜,总想这么好的烟,不吸白不吸,不会吸也装着会吸。同时以此表示与师傅同步,孤立

孙猴。

玄奘本没有烟瘾,但沙僧一个劲地让烟,他本身又是团长,徒弟的孝敬又不能不接。久而久之玄奘的烟瘾比原来大多了。八戒由不会吸到会并渐渐形成了瘾。他偶尔也后悔,责备自己好端端地吸什么烟呀!但他始终战胜不了占小便宜的心理。沙僧到是心得意满。然而孙猴一直没有再吸。

师徒四人取经回来,也就是最好81难中,还暗藏着这样一段描述:他们千辛万苦终于到达了天竺,见到了佛祖大佬如来。经书自然取到了手。然而意想不到是如来还特意送他们一个精致的小盒作为礼物。口中念念有词说:“经如烟,烟如经,这可是我亲手秘制之上品。就算是对你们一路辛苦的表彰和慰问吧!”师徒四人听得一头雾水。

玄奘好奇地接过小盒,一看原来是一盒天竺至尊牌儿雪茄烟。师徒四人忙道:“阿弥陀佛,阿弥陀佛”。这盒烟自然不会交沙僧保管,一直由玄奘揣在兜里,视为珍宝,不舍得拿出来。

在回来的途中,经过通天河,不慎落水,经书损失大半。师徒四人非常痛惜,情绪低落。玄奘忽然想起兜里还装着佛祖如来送的天竺至尊呢,连忙掏出一看,包装盒已经泡坏了,也不知道里边怎么样。打开发现盒里装着四支雪茄烟,完好无损。每只烟上分别写着玄奘、悟空、悟能、悟静的字样。因为外包装已坏,无法再保存了,于是,玄奘将四支烟分发给大家说:“这是佛祖如来送给咱们的礼物,没办法保存了,就吸了吧。”孙猴说:“佛祖明知我不吸烟,还送我这玩意。”八戒抢着说:“猴哥,你不要就给我。”沙僧说:“二哥,这可是一人一份的。”玄奘说:“悟空啊,这是如来佛祖的一片心意,又是他老人家亲手秘制,你不吸就是不接受,是对佛祖的大不敬。”孙猴不情愿地接过写着自己名字的雪茄烟,说:“好吧、好吧!就吸一口。”

于是,师徒四人纷纷点燃了雪茄烟,仅仅吸了一口,奇迹出现了,各个神魂颠倒,眼前的光景一下子变了模样。玄奘幻化为旃檀功德佛 。手执由观世音菩萨

所赠的九环神锡杖,身披锦斓异宝袈裟。孙猴幻化为斗战胜佛,头上的金箍也不见了踪影。八戒恢复人形,手执上宝沁晶耙,幻化为净坛使者菩萨。沙僧幻化为八宝金身罗汉菩萨。师徒四人神清气爽,飘飘然已位列仙班。孙猴兴奋地说:“师傅您已脚踩祥云,成仙啦!”八戒和沙僧也大声嚷嚷道:“师傅、师傅我们修成正果、修成正果啦!”。

此时,师徒四人才真正领悟佛祖如来赐烟的真实用意。高兴之余,也不免有些遗憾,早知道是这样,不如早吸了,我们可以驾云回去,也不致于损失经书了。在烟雾缭绕中师徒四人各个欢欣鼓舞,气氛十分火爆。

岂知,佛祖之心事。吸了我的烟,如同读了我的经;读了我的经,如同吸了我的烟。吸了我的烟,你才能成仙,烟没了,就什么都没了。要想再成仙,还得从我这取烟。其实,象大麻、阿片这些东西,从那些时候就已经有了。佛祖如来为他们解除了物质上的枷锁,同时,又牢牢地给他们套上了精神上的锁链。朋友,人的一生又何尝不是一次西天取

经,千辛万苦,披荆斩棘,艰苦卓绝。为的不也是取得真经,修成正果吗?但你可曾想过,当你得到了梦寐以求的馅饼的时候,你能保证你没有滑入一个无底的陷阱吗?试问:在这一路之上,你真的没有主动、或被动地吸过“烟”吗?
