LITEXPO is one of the largest and the most up-to-date exhibition and congress centres in the Baltic States. It features 9 conference and meeting halls occupying more than 4000 m2. The largest multifunctional hall has 1800 seats and can be easily transformed to suit many purposes. Each hall has excellent acoustics functional lighting and easy-to-use video and audio equipment including high-resolution video projectors, motorised displays, speakers and simultaneous interpretation equipment. An integrated video and audio exchange system connects the five biggest halls, allowing simultaneous videoconferencing for up to 3000 people. Moreover, exhibition halls can be transformed as conference halls and the biggest hall can accommodate up to 4212 people.

Scholarly Communication and Information Centre (SCIC) is a modern and advanced centre of knowledge and information of Vilnius University Library, integrated in the science and studies Saulėtekis Valley. It is located near the pinewood forest, easy to reach with any transport. The biggest conference hall can accommodate up to 250 delegates and can also be transformed into 150, 50 and 30 seat spaces. SCIC is open for scientific conferences and is fully adapted for people with disabilities.

The State Small Theatre of Vilnius is located in Gediminas Avenue, the main street of Vilnius. It is one of the most attractive venues in the city’s cultural life. The architecture of the building is exceptional: the main hall has a unique glass block ceiling. Only two ceilings of this kind have survived in Europe - in Vilnius and in Prague. The theatre main hall can accommodate up to 226 people. Next to the hall there is a 142 m2 lobby and a cosy café in the basement.

The Arts Printing House is a performing arts venue and meeting place established in a former printing house dating back to 1585. The premises contain two performance spaces for 60 and 203 people, three rehearsal spaces, offices and a resource library. The Arts Printing House is located in Vilnius Old Town close to the main tourist sites and the artists’ district of Užupis.

Vilnius is Lithuania’s largest city and its capital. There are 539 700 inhabitants of whom 57.8% are Lithuanian, 18,7% Polish, 14% Russian, 4% Belarusian, 1.3% Ukrainian, 0.5% Jewish and 3.7% - other nationalities. Vilnius is the cultural and economic centre and one of the most rapidly developing Lithuanian cities. The administrative authority and business entities of the country are concentrated in Vilnius.

Geography. Vilnius is situated in south-eastern Lithuania (54°41’ N, 25°17’ E) at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers. It is believed that Vilnius was named after the Vilnia river. In 1989 the National Geographical Institute of France determined that the geographical centre of Europe lies 24 km northwest of Vilnius. The current area of Vilnius is 402 sq. km (155 sq. mi). Buildings cover 20.2% of the city with 43.9% greenery and 2.1% water.

Weather. The average annual temperature is +6.1 °C (43°F). In January the average temperature is -5 °C (23 °F), in July it is +17 °C (62.5 °F). Summers can be hot in Vilnius. Winters can be very cold, with temperatures rarely reaching above freezing. Temperatures below -25 °C (-13 °F) are not unheard of in January and February. Vilnius’s rivers freeze over during particularly cold winters, and the lakes surrounding the city are almost always permanently frozen during this time of the year.

Arriving in VilniusBy AirVilnius International Airport is located on a plateau in the south of the city. It is only 7 km/15 min driving distance from the centre of the city. Access to the city is quick and inexpensive. Guests can use bus, train and taxi services. City buses No. 1, 88, 3G run from/to the airport every 10-15 min. Buses and taxis are located outside the Arrivals Hall. A special train runs from Vilnius Airport to the main train station. The journey takes just seven minutes. The airport train station includes a passenger lift and is located directly in front of the airport.

It is only a five-minute walk distance to the main train station and 10 minutes to the Old Town. There are direct buses to Vilnius from many European countries. By CarVilnius can be reached by using the following road routes: • Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda, highway A1 (E271)• Vilnius–Panevėžys, highway A2 (E272)• Vilnius–Minsk, highway A3 (P28)• Vilnius–Grodno, highway A4 (P42)• Vilnius–Utena, route No. 101• Vilnius–Ignalina–Zarasai, route No. 102

Public transportVilnius has an effective and cheap network of trolleybuses and buses. They start running at around four in the morning and stop at midnight. There are single journey tickets, tickets valid for 1, 3 or 10 days as well as monthly passes that can be used on all city buses and trolleybuses. TaxiNumerous taxis operate in Vilnius. Taxis can be hailed in the street or found at ranks at strategic spots in the Old Town and city centre. They can also be ordered at a cheaper price by telephone. Taxis hailed in the street can be expensive and not always of the best quality. Fares are displayed on meters and include service. Tips are paid at the passenger’s discretion. The average cost within the city is up to 15 €. For more information, see www.vilnius-tourism.lt

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

VisaCitizens of all countries from the European Union, most countries in North and South America, Andorra, Australia, Croatia, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Portugal, San Marino, El Salvador, Singapore, Switzerland, Uruguay, the Vatican City and Venezuela do not need a visa, only a valid passport valid for at least three months is required. Travellers requiring a visa can travel freely throughout the Schengen Area for three months with a Schengen visa issued by any Schengen country. Obtaining a visa entitling you to visit one Schengen country automatically entitles you to travel to and from all the Schengen countries too. MoneyThe national currency is euro. Foreign currencies can be easily exchanged in banks. Cash machines (ATMs) can be found in all parts of the city. Cash withdrawals may be made using your credit card. The logos of accepted cards are shown besides the machine. Most internationally recognised bank and credit cards are accepted and widely used in all hotels, restaurants and shopping malls where such methods of payment are indicated by the entrance. Working HoursGovernmental institutions work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Shops are usually open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. on weekdays and until 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. on Saturdays. All shopping malls and some of smaller stores are open on Sundays as well. Some supermarkets are open around the clock.
