European StereotypesChloe, Kieran, Lakhjit, Alisha and Jordan
Introduction There are may stereotypes within Europe. The countries that we will be covering are:
These are all important countries in todays modern world but each have unique stereotypes alongside them which can be very negative towards the people from these countries.
Poland France Russia Germany
Germany – Media Representations Germany have a strong stereotype around being evil and hateful
people due to the starting of the second and first world war. The English media portrayed the causes of the wars onto Germany
which still today provides a negative stereotype to the people of Germany.
Another important stereotype which Germans are often associated to is their love towards certain foods and drinks. Two foods which
they ‘love’ are bread and sausages. Throughout time Germany have also been linked towards loving sausages and is not always true though there are many sausage stalls within Germany. They also
are stereotyped to have a love towards Beer and a lot of it! Germany also have a stereotype of bored and a senseless humour
because they are associated with being very serious and bland although this stereotype is not correct!
Russia – Media Representations Russia historical representations include them being seen as fearless and
powerful after the second world war as they overcame the Germans despite the conditions. In film the Russians follow the same concept and
often play the villain or have a evil type of role within the film. Throughout history they have been seen as very independent and powerful within
Europe and the rest of the world. Another large stereotype which Americans often refer Russians to is the word ‘Soviet’ as their views are very different compared to America’s in the
way the country is governed. This word always comes into the mind of anyone when thinking about Russia because of the amount it has been said
throughout history. Russia is also associated with being cold but more importantly is there strong accent which is completely unique to Russian people. This accent is
also linked to all Russian people having deep and powerful voices.
France – Media Representations There are many different stereotypes about French people throughout
history. Some examples are that they are commonly found to be smelly. This is been their through history because French people are known to eat
loads of garlic and this means they are thought to smell. Also French people are thought to be very rude people and to hate all
Americans. These stereotypes from History are made up by people and through out of
history more and more people have heard about them and carried them on. Some of these stereotypes are still thought to be true such as that
French smell, as they still eat garlic and they are still thought to be really rude.
Poland – Media Representation Poland have had many different stereotypes throughout history. Polish
people are normally found to drink a lot of alcohol and to be with in organised crime and theft. People have found this through history as
people have claimed to see polish people steal and their was high crime rates in Poland.
Polish people are also known to be really rude and thought to never smile and constantly complain. This also has been thought a lot and been passed
down through generations. Some of theses still exist today such as the big some's of alcohol they drink
and that they are very rude. Although Polish people are thought to be builders.
