Many schools in South Jerseyhave a “One Book, One School”initiative where every student inthe school reads the same book. The staff at Kirby's Mill Ele-
mentary School in Medford didn'tjust want to read one book, how-ever. They wanted to bring a bookto life.Last Thursday, the school host-
ed a family night to kick off its“One Book, One School, OneShow, One Community” initiativefor 2015.In the next two months, every
student at Kirby's Mill will read“Charlotte's Web.” However, theteachers and administrators atthe school decided to make theirprogram stand out from all theother “One Book, One School”initiatives. Principal MarkDamon came up with the idea ofadding a community and show as-pect to allow students to interactwith the book in a number ofways.Amy King, a librarian at
Kirby's Mill Elementary and oneof the organizers of family night, said the idea was to allow the kidsto enjoy moments outside of thebook's pages.“The initial idea came from
wanting our children to havemore experiences,” King said. The community involvement
part of the program began at fam-ily night. Students and their par-ents were invited to the school for
a night of fun, farm-themed activ-ities such as pie-eating contests,square dancing and a sausage
making demonstration. Theschool even had a real pigbrought in for the night. The purpose of the kickoff
event was to not just get the stu-dents excited to read “Charlotte'sWeb,” but also to get the parentspumped up. King said “Char-lotte's Web” was chosen with theparents in mind.“We thought this was a book
that would tug on parents’ heart-strings, because they will have re-membered reading this book, andwe thought it was a great oppor-tunity to introduce the childrento certain topics,” she said. The involvement of parents
was really important to theschool staff. King said the cur-riculum really requires parentsto read with their children athome. She felt this initiativewould help bring families togeth-er.“We need the parents’ help
when it comes to this curriculumand reading every night,” Kingsaid. “Activities like tonight real-ly instill that.”The show aspect of the pro-
gram will take place on May 8,when every student at Kirby'sMill will go on a field trip toDuPont Theater in Wilmington,

By PAMELA PORTA POSKSpecial to The Sun
It was April 1979 in AtlanticCity that my husband and I met. Both of us were freelance violin-ists playing the gig of the decadeat Resorts Casino. Frank Sinatrawas the headliner and he broughthalf of his orchestra from NewYork City to fill out the AtlanticCity local band. The contractor picked me to
"sit with Tony" as my stand part-ner. When Tony showed up, Ithought "Oh, he's cute!" Tonythought the same about me. Thatstarted a romance that is stillgoing strong after 35 years. He proposed over a romantic
dinner in the rustic inn The Beek-man Arms in Rhinebeck, N.Y., inthe fall of 1979. We were marriedin December 1979 right after Tonyreturned from a European tour
with the Detroit Symphony. Ourhoneymoon was spent in Bermu-da doing another great gig withPerry Como. And, 35 years later, we are still
very much in love.

Many of the fastest athletes inhigh school swimming have mas-tered a particular stroke or event.Shawnee senior swimmer Jon
Burkett has managed to masterthem all.Burkett finished his final high
school season in the pool with anoutstanding performance at theNew Jersey boys' swimming Meetof Champions, winning the 100butterfly and finishing in thirdplace in the 100 backstroke.Swim head coach Eric O’Neill
said swimmers as versatile asBurkett are hard to find.“I can put him in any event and
at any distance,” O’Neill said.Burkett credits his versatility
to an intense training regimen.
“I practice eight to nine times aweek,” he said. “Some days, I'm inthe pool for five hours.”While Burkett has become
competitive in every swimmingevent, the butterfly has alwaysbeen his best. Burkett beganswimming at Deerbrook SwimClub in Medford at the age of 11.He said the butterfly was thestroke he picked up the fastest.“I was naturally talented at the
butterfly,” Burkett said. “So I fo-cused on that pretty quick.”Burkett began to emerge for
Shawnee in his sophomore year, when he was a member of its 2013state champion individual med-ley relay team. Burkett waspoised to make a splash at thestates in the individual events.

Maybe he popped the question on a pic-turesque summer day at the beach, a ban-ner plane proclaiming his love flying over-head. Perhaps she organized your familyand friends into a flash mob, asking foryour hand in marriage at the end of anelaborate song and dance. Or maybe it wassimple, both curled up on the couch athome, sharing a pizza and laughing over

no matter how you went from single to be-trothed, The Sun wants to celebrate withyour stories. Was it the most romantic proposal in

charm? Whatever your story, we’re callingon you to send it in so we can share it witheveryone.Send in your perfect (or not-so-perfect)

The Iron Devils, Seneca and Shawnee'sRobotics team, won the Chairman's Medalat its last competition. The Chairman’s Award is the most pres-
tigious award in FIRST (For Inspirationand Recognition of Science and Technolo-gy), and honors the team that best repre-sents a model to other teams to emulateand best embodies the purpose and goals of
FIRST. The Chairman’s Award is present-ed to the team judged to have the most sig-nificant measureable impact on its part-nerships among its participants and com-munity over a sustained period, not just asingle build season. The winner is able todemonstrate progress toward FIRST’s mis-sion of transforming our culture. Here is what the judges had to say about
the Iron Devils: “Whether it’s mentoring FIRST teams or
spreading STEM, the FIRST message isbeing shared to the community. They aredriving toward excellence with strong part-nerships with their sponsors. They are ona P.A.T.H. to leading the way and continue

Over the last few weeks, youmay have read on this pageour request to have you send
in the story of your marriage propos-al. March 20 is National Proposal Day,and we are celebrating the under-the-radar “holiday” by telling the storiesof marriage engagements of the mem-bers of this community. Why do we do this? As one of our as-
sociate editors would say, “we lovelove.”And so, too, apparently, do plenty of
other New Jerseyans. A recently-re-leased Census report shows that NewJersey has the lowest percentage ofpeople who have married two or moretimes. So, when we say “I do,” we tendto mean it. Or, at the very least, we
don’t intend to say it again if thingsdon’t go right the first time. We’d rather focus on that first point,
though. New Jersey has long held oneof the lowest, if not the lowest, divorcerates in the nation, and experts arenever surprised to read this. Why? Be-cause New Jersey residents typicallyfall into categories that put them at alower likelihood to get a divorce:We have a high level of education,
so we often delay marriage to a laterage, making us more emotionally and
financially stable. Money troubles area leading cause of divorce, and since agood portion of our newlyweds are ina better financial position than theircounterparts in the South and West –where divorce rates are higher – wetend to avoid the D-word. Which circles us back to what we’re
really talking about here – wonderful,head-over-heels love.We have already received plenty of
stories from the community abouttheir memorable engagement stories, and we thank you for them. Your sto-ries will be told in these pages in thecoming weeks. If you want to shareyour stories with the town, pleasesend them in. We love love, all year‘round.

“Once the sun goes down, theworld looks entirely different,”said Pat Worley, president of Twi-light Blue Photography, in regardto her latest exhibit, “Dusk ‘tillDawn.” The reception for this ex-hibit will be held on March 27from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at theAmeriprise Financial, HansenWarner Gallery located at 6 SouthMain St. in Medford. The exhibit showcases Wor-
ley’s award winning photos takenduring her favorite time to shoot, the night. This past year, Worleyvisited some of the darkest skiesin the world including the SaltFlats of Uyuni in Bolivia, Yellow-stone National Park and the
Grand Tetons, among others. These locations are known tohave the cleanest and purest skiesin the world, and have allowedWorley to capture breathtakingastrophotography images. “Dusk‘till Dawn” features two photo-graphs of the full arc of the MilkyWay from opposing perspectives –one from the northern hemi-sphere and the other from thesouthern. The exhibit is not all astropho-
tography. Worley has also cap-tured the moments before andafter the stars come out to play.An image of Medford Lakes dur-ing the blue hour after the sungoes down, known as twilight, de-
picts a scene from Canoe Carni-val and captures the energy ofthe crowd on the lake as nightfalls. Another image shows themost southern tip of South Amer-ica illuminated in pastel colorsfor just a few tranquil momentsbefore the sun rises. The exhibit also features two
images of Philadelphia at nightthat will soon be part of the per-manent collection in the PennPresbyterian Pavilion for Ad-vanced Care in Philadelphia. There will be refreshments at
the reception and the event isfree. For more information con-tact Pat Worley at www.Twilight-BluePhotography.com.

Del., to see the theatrical produc-tion of “Charlotte's Web.” Thestudent body will take sevenbuses down to Delaware, enjoy apicnic lunch and then see theshow.“Mark's idea was he wanted
the children to see an orchestraor theater production,” King said. The students will enjoy a
school-wide picnic thanks to thegenerosity of a local church. TheFirst Central PresbyterianChurch, located across from theDuPont Theater, is inviting theschool to eat lunch at its facilityfree of charge. The biggest challenge Kirby's
Mill Elementary has faced is
funding the program. To helpraise some money, the school ap-plied for a $2,500 grant with the Medford Education Founda-tion.The MEF raises money for the
Medford Township schoolsthrough a number of fundraisers. All money the foundation raisesgo back to the schools throughgrants. The schools are invited toapply for grants each year. The MEF has a $2,500 maxi-
mum for each grant application. However, Kirby's Mill Elemen-tary's proposal blew the founda-tion's board members away.“The board was so impressed
with the initiative, after a discus-sion, we decided we were going tounderwrite the whole program,”MEF President Tommie Ann Gib-ney said. The foundation donated $7,268
toward the program, which paidfor every expenditure, including abook for every student, expensesfrom the family night event andall costs for the field trip toDelaware.“We're benefiting every student
in the school,” Gibney said. “Wewere impressed because everysingle teacher signed onto this.We felt we wanted to be a part ofit.”Gibney described the program
as a once-in-a-lifetime opportuni-ty for the students at Kirby's MillElementary. King agreed, sayingshe hopes the family night andupcoming trip will be somethingthe students will remember forev-er.“This is something the chil-
dren will always remember about their time at Kirby's,” shesaid.

Burkett swam in almost every event
However, his plans were derailedwhen he tore his right calf mus-cle a month prior to the champi-onship meet.Entering his senior year, Bur-
kett knew he only had one more
chance to win an individualevent, so he pushed himself towork harder than ever. O’Neillsaw a strong sense of determina-tion in Burkett entering the sea-son.“He really came back senior
year extra determined,” O’Neillsaid. “He had goals from the get-go to win the state champi-onship.”Burkett had a season unlike
any other, swimming in everyevent for Shawnee except for the500 freestyle. Not only did heswim most of the events, but hedidn't lose a single race in a dualmeet the entire season. At the state championship for
the final time, Burkett said com-peting individually was a biggerdeal than when he was part of therelay team his sophomore year.Burkett loved to swim under thespotlight.“Winning an individual swim-
ming championship is more im-
pressive in and of itself,” he said.“There's definitely more pres-sure. I think the pressure makesme swim faster.”O’Neill added Burkett could
have finished near the top in theindividual medley and breast-stroke events as well, but Burkettchose to concentrate on butterflyand backstroke.“I thought with backstroke and
butterfly, I would have the bestraces,” he said.In the butterfly, Burkett was
the only swimmer to register atime under 50 seconds, finishingthe race with a time of 0:49.43.Later in the day, he finished inthird place in the backstroke witha time of 0:50.48. Both of histimes broke the school record foreach event.Burkett received a scholarship
to continue his swimming careerat North Carolina State, a strongswim program that will enternext year as the defending At-lantic Coast Conference champi-ons. As excited as Burkett is tocompete in Division I swimming,he was happy to finish his highschool career on a high note.
