Do we need both bread and wine to receive Christ’s Body and Blood? If I receive only the host—not the Precious Blood—am I participating fully in the Eucharist?

Liguori.org

ANNEKA / SHUTTERSTOCK

By only taking the host you are participating fully. In the same way, if you only drink from the chalice you are participating fully. Jesus is always fully present in each form—both one and the other. Many times it is not possible to offer the chalice to a large congregation; yet there are also times when one cannot receive the host, especially in sickness, and consuming the Precious Blood is easier. In its teaching on the Eucharist, the Church invites us to receive both: “It is especially fitting to receive Christ in both forms during the celebration of the Eucharist. This allows the Eucharist to appear more

perfectly as a banquet, a banquet that is a foretaste of the banquet that will be celebrated with Christ at the end of time when the Kingdom of God is established in its fullness (see Eucharisticum Mysterium, 32).” In John 6 Jesus invites us to both eat and drink, so it is good to do both if you are able. If you aren’t able, or if the chalice isn’t offered at your church, you still participate fully. Both forms are always present though, because the priest must always receive both.

Is taking just the host full participation?

Icon of Love

ICONS function as windows into the spiritual

world, bringing us closer to the divine

mystery and helping us strengthen our faith as we meditate

on them. The icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is one

of the best-loved and most well-known of these icons.

This book explores the messages within the Our Mother

of Perpetual Help icon, deepening our understanding of

the Incarnation, suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Through guided meditations on the five key elements of the

icon, questions, and space for personal reflection, this book

will guide you on the path toward deeper understanding

and prayerful devotion, with Our Mother of Perpetual Help

as your guide.

Br. Daniel Korn, CSsR, is the Our Mother of Perpetual Help

iconologist for the Redemptorists.

COMMEMORATING THE

150TH ANNIVERSARY OF

THE ICON OF OUR MOTHER

OF PERPETUAL HELP

We are invited to respond to the presentation of Christ by Mary by becoming the ones who must extend our hands and receive this Word, this Christ made flesh. It is as if she is saying to us, “Receive this Word of your salvation!” Mary is inviting us to renew our commitment to live the Gospel and proclaim Christ through our words and actions.

Pictorial Directory - We need your pictures The family pictures are done and now we are in the process of designing and putting the "Activity Pages" together, that usually fall in the front of a church's Pictorial Directory. So we need your parish group activity pictures (i.e. Mom’s Group, Top of the Hill, K of C and CCW events, Mission Trips, Parish events), we need your Ministry Pictures, whether it be a group shot or actual ministry in action shots, we also need some of our Sacramental pictures of your baby's baptism, your wedding, your Ordination, etc. The pictures can be turned into the office either via the actual hard copy of the picture, or sending a quality digital copy through email. Please send your email pictures to: [email protected]. We will not use all the pictures we receive (as we only have so much space) but we do appreciate you sending them to us. We will accept your photos up until Monday, June 6th. If you have any questions, please contact Pete Murray, (616) 813-4368.

Surgery or Illness: If you or a loved one are hospitalized, in a nursing facility, having surgery, or experiencing an illness, please contact Christine Shafer in the parish office by phone or email so that we may pray for you, offer you our parish care ministries, set up the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick when appropriate, or offer Eucharist to the homebound where needed. Most hospitals have Holy Communion ministers arranged if you ask for this while there, but if you need help getting this arranged, please let us know.

Prayer Request The Lord listens to our prayers. It is important for us to be praying for one another and our needs as a parish community. When you have a prayer intention, there are several avenues for requesting those prayers around Holy Family. Prayer intentions can be specified, or may be anonymous by stating “for a special intention” or “for the prayer intention of ______”. ●Parish bulletin: contact the parish office to be added to the prayer list in the weekly bulletin to be held in prayer by fellow

parishioners. ●Email chain: contact Marcia Dohm, parishioner, if you would like to offer a prayer intention or to be added as a recipient

of the emails to pray for others. [email protected] ●Parish Staff prayer: the parish staff gathers for prayer 3-5 mornings per week and will pray for your prayer

intentions. Contact the parish office or Christine Shafer if you would like to request to be added to the staff prayer. ●Mass Intention: you may contact the parish office to schedule a weekday Mass to pray for your prayer intention.

Diaconate Aspirancy Process: Inquiry for the Diaconate At this time, the Diocese of Grand Rapids is accepting inquiries from men interested in the diaconate. To be considered, an applicant must be a Roman Catholic at least 30 years of age (minimum age for ordination is 35), who is an active member of his parish (located within the Diocese of Grand Rapids) with the support of his Pastor. He must be in good health, of sound moral character, mature faith, regular practice in the sacramental life of the Church, and have a sense of vocation to service. If married, he must be in a valid Catholic marriage for a minimum of five years, have the support of his wife and family, and be in a strong, stable marriage. If unmarried, he must be willing and able to commit to celibacy. Although an upper age limit for application has not been established, the expectation is that ordained deacons will have the health and energy to provide a minimum of ten years of ordained ministry to the diocese of Grand Rapids.

The deadline for inquiries to the Diocesan Aspirancy Process is August 12, 2016. All men who are interested in more information and/or applying are asked to contact Reverend Mark Przybysz, Diocesan Director, Office for Ministry & Life of Permanent Deacons, Diocese of Grand Rapids, for an appointment: [email protected] or 616-453-8229, extension 100.

Bread Bakers Wanted! Do you enjoy making yummy homemade bread? Our welcome ministry gifts our new parishioners a fresh bread, baked with love by our own parish family, on welcome weekends. If you would like to be on the bread baking rotation, please call or email the office to be put on our list, and when it’s your turn, you’ll be contacted. Any type of yummy bread is welcome when it’s your turn.

Welcome Weekend Coordinator Would you like to be a part of welcoming families to our parish family? Consider coordinating our welcome weekends once a month starting in the Fall. This position would entail coordinating host/mentor families for new parishioners, scheduling new parishioners to their preferred Mass at the weekend, contacting bread bakers, getting the baskets put together, and overall coordination. Please contact Christine Shafer by phone or email if you are interested in this meaningful and important act of our parish family.

Take Them A Meal - Meal Ministry Our parish is seeking people who would like to bring meals to parishioners in their time of need. This might be while a family is experiencing a death in the family, post-surgery when the extra help could make a lot of difference, after a new baby in the family, and a number of other times. Lisa Ziemke will be coordinating this ministry of care and full bellies, but meal-makers are needed. You will be notified of an opportunity for meals and given instructions on delivery address,

time to deliver, food allergies, etc., and then can sign up for a meal. If you would like to be put on the notification list, please contact the parish office or contact Lisa Ziemke directly at 616-437-0607 or [email protected].

“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus posed this question to His Apostles. How would we answer Him? How do we come to know Jesus? The same way we get to know each other: by spending time together. Jesus ‘craves’ us, yearns for us to spend time with Him and to get to know Him as our best Friend. Take advantage of the beautiful invitation and opportunity.
