We are shaping a vibrant caring community of faith. Each week here at Knox we are blessed with programs that include people of all ages from within our Knox Church family and the community around us. Our Holy Week services (Prayer Room, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday & Easter Sunday) were all well attended and included wonderful music. Our Praise Band continues to thrill and inspire us. Upwards Sports & Logos have completed another successful year and continue to be a source of pride and leadership by the youth of our congregation. Wednesday’s @ Knox, Fitness & Fellowship, the tone chime choir, & other programs like the upcoming May Mayhem allow all of us an opportunity to participate in the life and witness of this church community. When you walk in through the front door there is the feeling that you are entering a vibrant faith community, a church that is not afraid to take the risk, try something new, and be a trendsetter. At the end of March (the 1st financial quarter of 2013), our Congregation has again shown that we have the ability to meet and exceed our own expectations. Our donations are ahead of budget by $29,000 and expenses year to date are under budget by $11,500. The deficit at the end of March is $12,434, just slightly less than at the end of February but well below what we had predicted for the end of our first financial quarter. It is still early in the year, but it is my hope that we will continue to challenge ourselves to be faithful stewards of the Church community that we call home. Let's continue to amaze ourselves and, trusting in God, be trendsetters of sustaining financial stewardship of the programs that make Knox Waterloo the place to be. Blessings to all,

Many Thanks: Many thanks to the Knox Waterloo family for prayers and support over the last few months. Kirsten, Annelis and I value your care and love during the time of John’s passing. While we have been here only a short time, I am so glad that many of you got to know John. He was a gentle and caring man. We miss him. Beth Thorsen.

Congratulations! Congratulations to the Rev. Mary Whitson who celebrates two milestones in ministry this year ‐ the 40th Anniversary of her graduation from Ewart College and the 25th Anniversary of her graduation from Knox College.

Congratulations to Dave Ogram who was honoured as the 2013 recipient of the Shining Star – Caring Action Award at the Volunteer Impact Awards, hosted by the Volunteer Action Centre. The Shining Star category recognizes a volunteer

who significantly contributes to improving the quality of life for others through hands‐on work. The Caring Action Award is awarded to an exemplary volunteer in a program setting such as visiting, driving/serving meals/fitness program leader.

In addition to all he does at Knox (Upward Sports, LOGOS, Tech Team, Session, Presbytery, etc.) Dave volunteers at Out of the Cold, and the Food Bank of Waterloo Region on a weekly basis.

Sunday School continues until June 23rd. Our teachers are a dedicated bunch and we appreciate their commitment to teaching on Sundays throughout the year. As this time of the year fills with extra commitments, some of the teachers are requesting a Sunday “off”. If you can help by “substitute teaching” in May or June, please see Laura V. And of course please give some thought to being available to teach on a Sunday or two in July or August.

LOGOS finishes 20th season At Knox

Thanks go out to all those who participated in our after school ministry this year. 50 children and youth participated in Bible Study, Worship Skills, Recreation Time and Holy Hilarity at Family Time on Thursdays from 4:30‐7:30pm. 70 adults participated in leadership roles like Bible Time Leaders, Cooks, Launders, Shoppers, Greeters, Rec Time Leaders and more. Congratulations to all groups who made presentations during worship on Sunday mornings, you are an inspiration. A special thanks to our “retiring” LOGOS Director Marg Woods who has done a stellar job of coordinating all that goes into making a ministry like this one so special. We are excited to announce that Lisa Dougall is the new LOGOS Director for the 2013/2014 season. Please take a moment to celebrate with her. The LOGOS Steering Committee and Lisa will be meeting over the summer to prepare for LOGOS starting Sept. 19th, 2013. If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please see the members of the LOGOS Steering Committee (Lisa Dougall ‐ Director, Lynn Allen – Bible Time Coordinator, Pete Nevin – Rec Time Coordinator, Amanda Farquhar – Worship Skills Coordinator or Laura VanderVleuten – staff rep).

The Elmira Poultry Fundraiser has been another successful event with the youth group making $5.00 on every box of chicken sold. Thanks to all who supported this fundraiser. Orders will be delivered to Knox on Saturday May 11th (time will be posted in the bulletin) so please make arrangements to pick up your chicken that day. We are still collecting loose change in the blue water jug at the Welcome Desk on Sunday mornings. Our last fundraiser will be a BBQ in June, watch for more details to be posted soon. A Retreat was held April 20th‐21st at the church. We built team spirit, did a Bible Study, took an inventory of our Spiritual Gifts, and found out what “colours” we are (ask one of the youth what that means exactly). “Thanks” goes out to the adult leaders who planned and prepared a photo scavenger hunt, minute‐to‐win‐it games, meals, and educational sessions which all helped us to work together as a team getting ready to serve in Winnipeg this summer. The next service project is a Food Bank Sort on Thursday May 9, 5:45‐8pm. Please see Dave Ogram if you can volunteer.

On Mother’s Day we celebrate all types of Mothers, for there is a wide definition of motherhood. All Mothers are special yet all are unique in their own way. The person we feel has “mothered” us may or may not fit the traditional definition of “Mother”. Your “mothering” person may be an aunt who raised you, a grandmother who nurtured and spoiled you or a birth mother who gave you life and the gift of a family through adoption. Our “mothering” may even have come from a special teacher, neighbor or friend. It is a gift when we have had a combination of people who have “mothered” us. “Mothering” to me means someone who is always there for me, accepts me unconditionally and encourages and guides my path in life. They are always there to pick me up when I stumble and love me in spite of everything life throws my way. Mother’s Day can bring up all kinds of emotions; sadness, grief, loss and happy memories that will last a lifetime. I am sure many will look back with fond memories of all our different “mothers” wherever they may be. God has granted us that gift and for that we can give a prayer of thanks for all those we call “mother”.

We can’t quite believe that the second year of this adult ministry at Knox is about to come to an end! We want to thank all of you who have attended, helped in so many ways, presented so wonderfully, and supported each

other so beautifully! All of you have made this year an amazing one, and when we finish our time together on May 15th, we hope everyone will stay in touch over the summer. A change is as good as a rest, but we will certainly be looking forward to the start‐up of our third year in September.

On May 1st, we will have our last catered meal for this season. Tickets will be sold until Sunday, April 28th during coffee hour. For our final two weeks, we will enjoy our famous sandwiches, assorted vegetables, pickles, desserts, coffee, and tea for $5‐. If you are able, please join us over the lunch hour, and feel free to invite friends! You may bring your own bag lunch, and we will provide tea, coffee, and desserts for free.

Upcoming Presentations May 1st - “Spring Fling”

Come and enjoy chicken, vegetables, baked potatoes, all the fixings, desserts and drinks for $10‐, or bring your own lunch and join in the fellowship. Joan Wilson will be making her famous cookies for us, too!

May 8th – Kathryn Hare: PWS&D Kathryn Hare has been a member of the national committee of Presbyterian World Service and Development for the past five years. This is the branch of our national church that responds to Christ's call to serve the world's neediest people. She will share with us pictures and stories of some of the PWS&D relief and development programs that are bringing hope and making a lasting difference in our world.

May 15 – Pot Luck Lunch, Music and Farewells!

We will provide buns, meat, and fixings if you will bring a dessert or a salad‐style dish for our potluck. There will be some very special guests at W@K for our final luncheon for this season!

July 31 – Dunfield theatre: Sorry…I’m Canadian (2 p.m.)

Music, humour and political satire directed by Alex Mustakas, starring Neil Aitchison, Music direction by (Knox’s very own) Nicol Guse. For info, contact Agnes Steffy (885‐6013). For many years, I was known as Heather's mom, as I attended only when I was not working. With my daughter, Heather, I started up Brownies, Guides and eventually Sparks at Knox.

I now help in many different ways and have been blessed with so many new

people in my life. The warmth and accepting qualities of Knox have only grown over the past 39 years and I am happy to help extend that feeling to anyone who comes through our doors. Knox was an oasis in my search for a place to worship God and grow in his love. This all started with a visit from Rev. Walter Maclean. Thank you Knox and may we continue to have such wonderful and caring Ministers and staff who meet our many needs.

Imagine sitting in a hospital bed, having just delivered your first child, and a Minister comes in and introduces himself. That was my first contact with Knox Presbyterian Church. Reverend Walter Mclean was that gentleman and made me feel as if I may have found a church where I would feel welcomed. That was almost 39 years ago. When I was finally ready to come to church with a newborn, I was met at the door and made to feel at home. I was shown where the nursery was and I was told that I was welcome to stay in the sanctuary or visit the nursery, where I could hear and see the service. I continued to come as often as I could, as I was a shift worker and also worked weekends. My children came with me at those times. As they got older and wished to attend Sunday School on a regular basis, the Cawsey family picked them up at the end of the street.

Once again, Habitat houses are being built on Howe St. Knox is providing lunch on Monday, May 27th. We will need sandwiches, desserts, and fruit for approx. 30 workers. If you can help, please see Joan Wilson or call her at 519‐747‐2510. Cash will also be gladly accepted to cover costs.

Christmas Bazaar After a very successful inaugural Christmas Bazaar in 2012 we are planning our second annual bazaar for this year. We have set a date of Nov. 16th, 2013 and are looking for help in making this event as positive and worthwhile as last year’s. The outside vendors were very appreciative of the venue and most have asked to come back. We will be having a meeting in June for everyone who is interested in helping. We need help with Advertising, Set up, Teardown, Bake table, and general tasks. Join the team! Looking forward to meeting all of the Christmas Elves and moving forward with this Bazzar! DIG IN is a 1 day region‐wide food drive to raise non‐perishable food needed for the summer months at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

This is a chance for the entire community to get involved, raise a lot of food for those needing help and have fun!

Why? 27,000 people needed food assistance last year. Almost 40% of these are children. The need for emergency food continues throughout the summer while many people are on vacation and not thinking of The Food Bank and the over 78 food programs it services: hampers, community meals, shelters and residential programs. When and where? On Sat., May 4th there will be events and activities at donation sites throughout the region organized by community groups. Knox will be at Fresh Co at Bridge and University.

It has been a long tradition for Knox Waterloo members to go to Cairn for the camp work weekend. This year’s work weekend is May 24th to 26th.

Come up North and get ready to prepare camp for the spring and summer! We could be putting in the docks, hauling brush, splitting wood, making wood chips, cleaning, organizing and working on some special projects.

Cairn will supply every delicious meal, a cabin to sleep in, and time to relax into the camp way of life. As a bonus, while the adults work around camp, Cairn staff will supply children’s programming and run the weekend as much like camp would run in the summer as possible.
