AT BOOKS
The Technological Thing Versus The Good Hlllan Life
This book, fo111erly titled 'Letters Fro• a Catholic Dissenter', views the triu.phant .. reb of technological industrialization as being the deepes t-lying cause of the recent 'auto-delition' of the Ro.an Catholic Church--as well as of the breakdown of religion, aorality, and societal stability, everywhere.
According to the penetrating analysis developed in this provocative book, the Technological Thing and the Good au.an Life cannot_ co-exist, the widespread senti.ental opinion to the contrary notwithstanding. If the good hu.an life is to be possible on earth, it .ust so.ehow be consciously reinstituted, and the conte.porary technological phenomenon IIUSt disappear in the · fona it has now-that is, its present spirit and structure, and .any of its results, IIUSt be rejected. So• suggestions are given as to how a start might be aacle toward the accomplishnt of these goals.

L&EPING BEAUTY By
Gail Stone
Shipe at lull sail, ride the seas without fail
All are nameci in style like pyramids on the ile
There are today, ships or the air, who have quite a !lair
One such ship on hi, is the 11leepiu Beautf11, ready to fly.
This ship is akin to ancient clipper ship
Because air is used, not water !or a dip.
A womans name is usual on cra!t, !or race alone.
A clipper ship o! the air, is nothin to bemoan
For this, 11Sleepin Beauty" 1 leaves a wake.

UFO Reported In Tewksbury Power lnterro_ption Coincides With Sighting
By Liz Fuerst A Tewksbury Township family notified
t h e s ta te p o l ice he adquar te r s a t Flemington last Tuesday night that it witnessed a UFO glide noiselessly over its Felmley Road home. · Pat and Earl Richards, Tewksbury residents for the past 21 years, said lights in the neighborhood flickered as the object passed slowly overhead and some houses had their electricity go off for. as much as two hours.
According to Mrs. Richards, a social worker in the Ewing Township public schools, repair crews from the Jersey Central Power and Light Company said a transformer had burnt out for no apparent reason.
The Richards and their two sons, Earl Jr., 28, and Wayne, 22, were attracted to lights outside their home at about 9:30p.m. last Tuesday after their electricity dimmed and the television went off.
Earl Jr., who works for Herr's potato cbips, said he looked overhead and saw dozens of green, b lue and red li ghts ... buzzing" in the southern sky. According to the yger Richards, they appeared to hover around a huge airborne vehicle, covered with hundreds of lights.
"The big ship was simply enormous," sUI Richards, who estimated it to be larger than four or five Boeing 747 planes pat together. "It wasn't round," he went 011. ·It was kind of elongated and had an
outline of wings. To tell you the truth, it looked just like the Battlestar Galactica that you see on the television show."
10
Mr s. Richard s said she saw the headlights of the larger vehicle heading toward Hunterdon County from the Somerville area soon after she walked out on her front lawn. ''At first, I thought it was just a star," she said. "But the lights got closer and closer. The thing was flying at the same level as a small aircraft would fly - not as high up as a jet."
All four family members watched the object glide overheard without making a noise. They estimated it to be going ·very slowly - at about the same speed as a plane is going when it is ready to land.
"H it was a plane," said tile younger Richards, "and it was getting ready to land, I don't know where it would have landed around here."
Mrs. Richards, who once worked as the nurse at Tewksbury's Saw Mill School, said she called the state police at Flemington to report the incident. She doesn't know if there were other sightings that evening.
Later in the week, she reported the sighting to the United States Air Force's center for UFO information. "I'm not saying that what we saw was a space ship," said Mrs. Richards.
"We just don't lmow what it was. We lmow what it wasn't, though- not a hot air balloon or a low Dying plane. It was just an unidentified object. And I'll tell you things around here haven't been the same since last Tuesday.,
There have been other reputed UFO sightings in Tewksbury Township in recent years. In 1975, a string of homeowners on Hell Mountain, about five miles from the.· Richards home, thought they saw an object hovering at treetop height, but they were
· unable to identify the craft. Property owners on Bissell Road near the Clinton Township line have also reported seeing UFOs in the area. Campers and fishermen have witnessed purported UFOs at Round Valley Reservoir. too.

Here is the first in-depth biography of one of the strangest, most important, least recognized · scientific geniuses in history, Nicola Tesla.ln TESI:.A: Man Out of Time, journalist and writer · Margaret Cheney reveals it was Tesla, not Thomas Edison, who invented the alternating
1 electrical current that powers our society . .. It wasT esla, not Marconi, who invented the wireless ... It was Tesla who developed the fundamentals of radar, missile guidance systems, microwave technology and the ··magnetic bottle" effects used in the contr-ol of atomic fusion ... Tesla who produced baUs of lightning and earthquakes in his laboratory and was unquestionably one of the most unusual and important scientists of our time.
Through a-fascinating portrait of this colorful, classic ''"mad genius," TESLA: Man Out of Time at last sets the record straight, giving full appreciation to Teslas lifetime d scientific pioneering. Fran his early work in the Edison lab through his years of celebnly as America's "Wonderful Wwsrd of Ohms" to his eventual decline into a pigeon-loving recluse, Cheney chronicles a stream of discoveries and inventions that included the first atom smasher, neon and fluorescent lighti"9t and turbine engines so advanced they have-never been improvectupon.lndeed,.many d- Ns research projeds:itwoiVecfconcepts so adVarKed that they are sti1 barely- understooct whidl is one clthe reasons bis papers- were seized by the FBI-when Tesla died, In relative obscurity, during_ World \\WI.
Illustrated with 24 pages of-rare-photo-. graphs, TESl.A is a-riveting journeyfto the
mind and-life of the briliantly gifted eccenbic who was Edison enemy, Mark Twairi s friend, J.P. Morgan's c:Mn, and hero and mertar to scores of the 20th century's most famous c:rientists.

Ann Druffel and D. Scott Rogo
On a chill March night in 1953, Sara Shaw and Jan Whitley's isolated Tujunga Canyon cabin was bathed in a blue oscillating light. When it vanished, they were honified to see that over two hours had elapsed. Over 20 years later,
under hypnotic regression, Jan and Sara independently recalled being taken by entities "dressed in one-piece black body stockings" aboard a "Saturnshaped" UFO.
But further investigation soon discovered a series of strange events. When Jan moved in with a new roommate several years later, alien presences visited them repeatedly. And

Now for the first time, a veteran pnrupsychoJogist und an oxporicnccd UFO researcher have joined forces to investigate tho original n1ultiplc-witness abduction and its amazing aftermath. DnJITel and Rogo find an eerie con-

&emplete Boo of Charles Fort The Boo of the Damned· Lo! Wild Talents· New Lands Did beings fmm outer space visit earth in the past ... are the various objects seen if:l the slty (flying saucers, in. modern terminolop;y) evidences of their visits1
What is the explanation of falls of frogs, falls of fishes, falls of seashells, which have been recorded from time to time1 Are they explainable in terms of selective tornadoes, or are they evidences of a planetary mechanism t.hat we do raot ltnow1
How can we account for all the inexplicable astronomical observations that have been made in the past: lights on the moon in the crater Plato, extension of lunar rays, bodies between Mercury and the Sun, appearances seen leaving the planet Mars1
How can we answer reports of strange animals, disappearances of men from open sight, curious structures in the snow, talents like teleportation and teleltinesis1
These are the "damned," by which the late Charles Fort meant all the wide range of mysteries that are ignored by orthodox scienc-e or explained away improperly.
Charles Fort worked full time for twentyseven years at the British Museum and the New York Public Library researching scientific journals, old periodicals, newspapers, and manuscript accounts to gather material on phenomena from the borderlands between science and fantasy. His researches appeared in four books, The Boolt of the Damned, New Lands, Lo!, and Wild Talents.
