HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYINGTHIS PROBLEM?

The escalating rates of reported cases of abuse onradio, through community members (such asvillagers, school teachers and community chief).

We saw a need to stand and act as we realized thelong term effects of abuse, which propelled us as anorganization to bring change.

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSINGTHI S PROBLEM?

    We have three programmes:

Institutionalisation: including basic needs such as food andclothing to the affected survivors (children).

Prevention: We create awareness of the problem through

community outreach programmes (campaigns, trainingworkshops, debates at the schools, child welfare forums(group of community members trained in addressing issues ofGBV), child focused groups ( children in the communitiestrained to identify and help other children who experience

abuse), we have a children's news paper (The children'svoice) which is the only newspaper in Lesotho addressingissues of children. We trained a group of young journalist whowill documents stories of children.

Treatment: psychological treatment through child friendly

therapies for the survivors, family and community.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THEPROJECT?

Abuse is an on-going problem which we startedaddressing since 2001, our target is to at least lowerthe rates of abuse through educationalprogrammes.

A District Child Protection Team that consists of(CGPU, DSW, World vision community Councillors, chiefs ,LCCU, magistrate e.t.c) work together in the

districts involved in prevention programmes to fightGBV. Through this team we believe that at least by2015 we would have halved the current levels ofGBV

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO ISINVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY

INVOLVED? Key targets is children and their families.

The community members are involved highly ( e.g footballclub, school children etc). In some of the activities that we dosuch as educational awareness on human and child

trafficking, the community also takes its stand to fighttogether with us.

The community is also involved through voluntary services(cleaning campaigns and engaging children in traditionalactivities)

Men and women are equally involved in the engagement ofthe project. In our board of directors, 50% of decision makingis done by women . However, theres still need for womenempowerment with regard to decision making in the family.

If the men is economically advantaged, he makes prominent

    decisions in the family.

    MONITORING AND EVALUATION

We have a monitoring and evaluation tool that enables us totrack progress of the work we are doing.

Quarterly, all staff and children have a workshop where weevaluate our progress. Then annually we gather together

again to assess progress. We also have what is called LCCU Day where we gather all

the children that received treatment at our centre. So far wemanaged to work with children from 6 districts.

We also receive CWF and CFG reports quarterly in order to

    evaluate progress.

    WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

The organization was established in 2001 and we were celebratingour 10 years anniversary.

We have had 1620 cases of abused children.

Two thirds of those cases are reintegrated back into the community, hence, positive results achieved.

It has been our dream to decentralise our services to the districst, wehave managed to do so through our partnership with world vision.

    Awards:

South African care and support initiative award (EDCON)

    Vodacom hall of fame award.

    SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

It is sustainable, it can be replicated by others, considering the fact that violence especially againstwomen and children is a world wide problem thatneeds a multi sectoral approach to address. If the

problem is not tackle, this can affect development ofchildren and humanity as a whole.

As an indication that the work can be replicated, there is another organisation that has recently been

established that provides shelter for survivors ofabuse of women and children and also survivors ofhuman trafficking. We have assisted thatorganisation with systems and policies need.

    LESSONS LEARNED

It is important to enshrine human rights to the entire project.

In 2011 the Child Protection Welfare Act was enacted, this willenable the effectivenss of our work particularly with regard topunishment and sentencing of perpetrators.

Community needs to be more sensitive to gender basedviolence, through educational programmes designed by thecommunity itself.

Children exposed to abuse, directly or indirectly become futureabusers, because they have learned the behaviour, hence,

practice it. Community should be on the for front in reviving old good

practices such asan African child belongs to the entirecommunity.
