Ethics and Ontology in Hesychasm and Irfan

A question oen posed by modern thought, secular or religious alike,is the relationship between ethics and ontology, i.e. what impact our ethi-cal, moral codes have on the very mode of existence, on our inner being.It is typical of modern thought to question the traditional, which is goodin a way, but what is not good about it is that modern thought regards itslimited spiritual experience, which is actually more of a lack of spiritualityand piety, as an absolute measure, and it does not, at least occasionally, call

this measure into question. at is why one of the questions commonlyasked today is what the purpose and the meaning of morality and ethics are.eologians ask the same question. It is understandable and justied sinceany serious and genuine theology and spirituality are such that they cannotgrasp the meaning of our life and work in the mere change of behaviour, thechange that reaches only the outer aspect of our being. Because of that it isnecessary to give an answer that can be found in the teachings and lives ofholy men on these issues: a) Is ethics in Christianity and Islam limited to theouter change of behaviour, habits, and actions or, if it is not so, whether itis aimed at something more? What re its role and meaning in the spiritual

life? b) Do ethical rules aect our inner being, what we are as creatures,what we become and what we should become as people of God? If there isa connection between ethics and ontology, where does it lie?

We nd that the deepest and truest answers to these questions are givenwithin the two traditions Orthodox Christianity and Shiite Islam.
