CORRUGATED METAL PANEL - EXPOSED FASTENER

Corrugated metal panel references the site’s industrial history and

provides a durable building envelope. The corrugation is oriented

vertically with exposed fasteners.

STOREFRONT WINDOW SYSTEM

The building glazing is predominantly a storefront window system,

organized with an offset pattern to create a dynamic facade. To maximize

the economy of the design, the assembly conforms to modular

dimensions and typically spans floor-to-floor. Regularly-occupied spaces

generally feature operable awning window units to allow natural

ventilation.

CURTAINWALL WINDOW SYSTEM

A curtainwall window system is used for larger expanses of glazing,

including at the building entrances, atria, shared learning areas (also

articulated in yellow metal panel), and stair towers.

COMPOSITE METAL PANEL

Certain openings are articulated with brightly-colored composite metal

panel to provide visual interest to recreational, multipurpose, shared

learning and high-traffic spaces.

PERFORATED CORRUGATED METAL PANEL

The courtyard and playground areas are enclosed with a perforated,

corrugated metal screen wall for privacy and security for students.

Overlaid on the building envelope, perforated, corrugated metal may be

used to create building signage (under separate application approval)

SITE REMEDIATION

The site has historically been used by industry and manufacturing,

including Dodge Steel and the Tacony Ironworks, which resulted in

environmental degradation. The new school project will remediate the

site, including the installation of soil in a “clean cap”, making it safe for

public uses again.

SOLAR ORIENTATION

The orientation of the two school buildings will help reduce solar

infiltration and thus energy consumption.

LOW ALBEDO ROOFING

Heat-reflective roofing material will minimize the heat-island effect as well

as energy consumption.

BIO-RETENTION BASIN

A bio-retention basin adjacent to the Delaware River provides water quality

treatment on site. Vegetation, planting soil medium, and outlet controls

are designed to allow the basin to filter out suspended solids. The basin

will contribute to better air quality, reduce urban heat island impacts,

provide habitat for native wildlife, and act as a landscape amenity to

enhance the site aesthetics.

DELAWARE RIVER WATERFRONT

The proposed development provides a minimum 50 foot waterfront

setback, which protects the Delaware River, helps to maintain public

aquatic ecosystems and riparian habitats, and minimizes erosion along

the riverbanks. The shoreline buffer provides food, shelter, and nesting

areas for fish and wildlife.

DRCC TRAIL ACCESS

The proposed extension of the DRCC waterfront multi-use trail will be

accessible to area residents via the former Magee right-of-way, promoting

health and wellness and supporting a shared community asset.

LANDSCAPE

The project proposes “greening” the site with new vegetation consisting of

trees, shrubs, and meadow seed mix. A large portion of the site is being

preserved as green space for use as recreational fields. Landscaping is

also proposed throughout the parking areas, which will reduce thermal

impacts and the heat island effect.

NATIVE VEGETATION

New trees, shrubs, and grasses will support local ecology with plant

species that are native to the region and require less-invasive

maintenance and replacement.

PERVIOUS PAVERS

Fire lanes and outdoor gathering spaces incorporate pervious pavers,

reducing erosion and stormwater run-off.

OPERABLE WINDOWS

All classrooms and many regularly occupied spaces will feature operable

windows, allowing for natural ventilation during temperate weather and a

reduction in heating and cooling loads.

NATURE TRAIL

A nature trail circumnavigates the recreational playing fields, giving an

opportunity for outdoor learning exhibits focused on environmentalism

and local ecology, while also providing accessible means of reaching

sport and spectator areas.

LED LIGHTING

Both interior and exterior lighting will use LED technology, reducing

energy consumption, lamp replacement, and building cooling loads.
