Status report regarding «Old Smuggler» This status report is written on the request of Arne Eiddal, who is the owner of the boat «Old

Old Smuggler is one of the largest and most well-equipped of all the boats built in the

Rampart yard.

Inspection

The inspection of Old Smuggler was conducted on February 21, 2019. The boat was then in

its home port, Oslo Motorbåtforening, and had an electric propeller going to keep the waters

around it from freezing. I was shown around by the owner, Arne Eiddal, and Tom Aaslund,

his friend. Eiddal told me he has kept up a yearly maintenance schedule since he purchased

the boat in 1988, but due to medical reasons it has been limited for the past three years. All of

this was in concurrence with my first impression of the vessel.

Technical appraisal

Hull

The hull, which is constructed by iroko on danta frames, appears to be in overall good

condition without any rot or major damages. There are some cracks along the seams on the

port bow, which can likely be resolved by applying putty and fresh paint when the hull is

dried out. The paint has come off in some spots on the stern, but this doesn’t appear to be due

to rot underneath. As the boat was in the water at the time of my visit I can’t make any

assesment of the state of the underwater hull.

Interior

I was shown around the interior which consists of an aft cabin with a head and bath, galley

and mess room, wheel house/main salon, engine room, another cabin forward and a forepeak

for storage. The interior is built in typical late 70’s fashion, but with a luxurious feel to it

given the year the boat was built, which can be seen in details such as the gold plated fixtures

in the bathroom. Overall the interior shows signs of its age of 40 years. It’s mostly intact, but

shows signs of wear with scratches and dents and has some water damage in the places where

this could be expected. This manifests in peeling of varnish and paint where the wood

underneath has become wet, mildew on textiles and the interior in the head and bath coming

off in some places. According to the owner the interior and layout is all original with minor

intrusions from technical upgrades done throughout the years. The deck seems to have been

kept from leaking as there are no apparent signs of water damage from deck leaks.

Engines

The boat is equipped with two Perkins 6.354 of 115hp each. They were not thoroughly

inspected but were test run and ran well without any issues or strange noises. Some

condensation was spotted on the port engine. The engines have each been run for 7100 hours

and have likely been well maintained as the current owner is a professional mechanic.

Electrical and technical equipment

When the boat was built in 1979 it was fitted with the best technical equipment available at

the time. Much of this original equipment is still in use, some has been replaced by more

modern versions and some is out of use. I was not able to fully examine and test all of this

equipment, but the owner seems to have a good overview of its current state. He also has a list

for points of examination called “selges opplysningskjema”. Some features worth mentioning

include the hydraulic bilge keels. Otherwise this boat has all the standard equipment of a

vessel this size.

Deck

The deck is teak planking on plywood, fastened with bronze screws. It is in poor condition

and a future owner will have to be prepared to replace it. The teak planks have been sanded

down so many times that the screws have started to surface, and seams and leaks have been

provisionally repaired.

Deckhouse and flybridge

The deckhouse and flybridge are built in plywood on a beam structure. The plywood has

started to delaminate from water damage, which is also clearly visible from the inside. Due to

this the whole structure needs to be thoroughly renovated.

Conclusion

The boat is in good enough condition to be used as it is, but if it is to be considered well-

maintained and in good shape the deck, deckhouse and flybridge will need to undergo a major

renovation. The condition of the deckhouse structure is so far gone that it will deterriorate

quickly if no measures are taken. The interior can be kept as it is but needs some work in

order to maintain or improve its state. The same can be said for the technical and electrical

equipment. The hull seems to be in good shape, but I haven’t seen the boat out of the water or

taken a closer look on the fasteners. In my opinion, if sold for the right price «Old Smuggler»

is a good boat for a Rampart enthusiast, who is willing to put in some work to eventually have

one of the biggest and grandest boats to ever come out of the Rampart yard.
