Fig.1.

INTRODUCTIONThe medicinal plants are important source of bioactive substances and have traditionally wide application. Antioxidant activities of plant polyphenols have beneficial health functions for retarding aging and preventing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The medicinal plant extracts are used in nutritional additives, in cosmetics and in pharmacology. Bulgaria is a country rich in medicinal plants. Among them there are many with high polyphenols contents.
AIM OF THE STUDY
The aim of this study was to compare the total polyphenols contents and the antioxidant activity of different Bulgarian medicinal plants and the exotic plants.
EXPERIMENTALThe following plants were studied: Folium Ginkgo, Folium Melissae, Folium Urticae, Radix Taraxaci, Flos Sambuci, Rhodiola rosea, Camomile. The extraction was carried out with ethanol-in-water solutions with variable ethanol concentrations: 0 %, 20 %, 50 % and 70 % vol. The total polyphenols content (TPPC) was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau method. The antioxidant capacity was analyzed by DPPH assay.
The extracts of the Chamomile and the Folium Urticae were used in cosmetic formulations based on stearic acid. The extracts used were chosen because of their traditional use in cosmetics for skin care. They were obtained by conventional extraction and maceration. The rheological properties and the stability of these compositions were determined. It was found that all the compositions are non-Newtonian. The effect of the extracts’ addition on the rheological parameters of the cosmetic formulations was studied. The compositions are stable during more then two months.

IC 50% AA (mg/ml)TPPC (%)Plant It was found that the maximal TPPC was found in Folium Melissae extracted with 20 % ethanol and in Rhodiola rosea extracted with 50 % ethanol. The maximal antioxidant capacity was determined as vitamin C and the quantity IC50%AA was obtained (the concentration of the extract leading to 50 % inhibition of free radicals).
CONCLUSIONIt can be concluded that for the medicinal plants studied the higher values for TPPC correspond to higher antioxidant capacity.
The rheological properties and the stability of these compositions were determined. It was found that all the compositions are non-Newtonian. The effect of the extracts’ addition on the rheological parameters of the cosmetic formulations was studied. The compositions are stable during more then two months.
